  5. 0:07the population of Los Angeles was a

  15. 0:33I've always enjoyed still in the life of
  16. 0:36Amy symbol McPherson she stands out
  17. 0:39above all the other Pentecostals because
  18. 0:41of her personality because their
  19. 0:43entrepreneurship because she was the
  20. 0:45first in so many she was the first
  21. 0:47Christian radio station in American
  22. 0:49history the third one in Los Angeles her
  23. 0:52life began in Canada her mother was a
  24. 0:55Salvation Army preacher her father was
  25. 0:5750 years old her mother was 15 when she
  26. 0:59was born so I would guess she was born
  27. 1:01in the controversy of her parents being
  28. 1:04such age differences when they got
  29. 1:05married and had their first child
  30. 1:07throughout her life her mother to be her
  31. 1:09standby and her support through ups and
  32. 1:11downs and even in their own struggle in
  33. 1:13their own fight with each other trying
  34. 1:14to run the great ministry Amy McPherson
  35. 1:17and the beginning of her life did not
  36. 1:19really know if God was real didn't know
  37. 1:22of God was alive because when she went
  38. 1:24to school they told her one thing when
  39. 1:25she wouldn't in church they told her
  40. 1:26something else and you know what to
  41. 1:28believe but one night as a young girl
  42. 1:30she asked God if you're out there
  43. 1:32whoever you are reveal yourself to me
  44. 1:34and God did and she found salvation in a
  45. 1:37little while she met her husband in
  46. 1:38Roberts simple Roberts symbol was a
  47. 1:41Salvation Army preacher who had been
  48. 1:42baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke
  49. 1:44with tongues so he had the fire of the
  50. 1:47Salvation Army for Souls and the fire of
  51. 1:49the Holy Ghost for all the other aspects
  52. 1:51of Christian ministry what a great
  53. 1:53combination they got married and Roberts
  54. 1:55simple was Amy's Bible School he would
  55. 1:57teach her the word they would read the
  56. 1:59Bible together and align the different
  57. 2:01scriptures with different colored
  58. 2:02pencils see we teach her what this verse
  59. 2:04minute what that chapter is about that's
  60. 2:06how she learned the Bible that's how she
  61. 2:08began her ministerial training then they
  62. 2:10felt called as a couple to go to Macau
  63. 2:13so they begin to tell all their friends
  64. 2:15and the revival meetings they were going
  65. 2:17to be a missionary pray for them support
  66. 2:19them she goes over to the Artic kingdom
  67. 2:21she pretty the first public sermon in
  68. 2:23Ireland and she's recorded saying it's
  69. 2:25like praying in tongues that comes out
  70. 2:26English she was so thrilled the first
  71. 2:28time she preached then they finally got
  72. 2:30to Macau and while they were there there
  73. 2:32were so many cultural differences there
  74. 2:34were so many things that were not
  75. 2:35prepared for and eventually the saddest
  76. 2:37thing happened while they were there
  77. 2:39her husband Robert simple died he died
  78. 2:41because Amy did not know how to take
  79. 2:43care and prepare the food right so and
  80. 2:45not preparing the food right
  81. 2:46he got malaria and he died she was
  82. 2:48pregnant the first child which would be
  83. 2:50a daughter named Roberta her mother in
  84. 2:52Canada would have to raise the money to
  85. 2:54buy them the boat tickets to come back
  86. 2:56from China to the Canadian homeland and
  87. 2:59then she got home she decided well since
  88. 3:01I'm not married a little child I'll just
  89. 3:04become a nice little woman have mother
  90. 3:06and stay here with my mom on the farm in
  91. 3:08Canada but she got sick and on her
  92. 3:10deathbed she said I cried out to God for
  93. 3:12healing and she repented and said I'll
  94. 3:14preach if you want me to preached cause
  95. 3:16remember in those days women didn't
  96. 3:18preach it was a man's job so to be a
  97. 3:20woman preacher was meant you're breaking
  98. 3:22through a lot of cultural barriers but
  99. 3:24she got up after being healed by praying
  100. 3:26that prayer and accepted her call God
  101. 3:28zaptor healed her shut up and begin to
  102. 3:30preach now in the beginning days her
  103. 3:32crowds weren't very big so what she
  104. 3:35would do she'd go into town and she
  105. 3:37would do different stunts like one time
  106. 3:39I was told she went to a town and found
  107. 3:41the center part of the city where most
  108. 3:42of the traffic would be going at
  109. 3:44lunchtime and she stood on the street
  110. 3:46corner and beginning to look up at the
  111. 3:47sky like she was looking at something
  112. 3:49and folks would walk by and look up and
  113. 3:51producing a crowd were together and the
  114. 3:53crowd got big enough so she thought
  115. 3:55could fill up the auditorium this year
  116. 3:56to rent it or the tips she'd set up
  117. 3:58she'd run down the street saying follow
  118. 4:00me I'll tell you what I'm looking for
  119. 4:01then she'd jump on the platform grab her
  120. 4:04tambourine and start sitting as she was
  121. 4:06looking for the king and then you start
  122. 4:08preaching this is a part of Amy's
  123. 4:10personality that made people love her
  124. 4:11and something she was absolutely crazy
  125. 4:14but at the end we all loved her so
  126. 4:17eventually her meetings begin to grow
  127. 4:18and then she decided well now that she
  128. 4:21has got a little child and that home
  129. 4:23feeding begin to grab her she decided to
  130. 4:26get married again and she married a man
  131. 4:28named Harold McPherson and she had a
  132. 4:30second child named Roth so she has two
  133. 4:32children she has a family and mr.
  134. 4:35McPherson wanted a nice little home nice
  135. 4:37little wife little children come home
  136. 4:39from work with the meal a white picket
  137. 4:40fence but I must ask if you ever saw Amy
  138. 4:43couldn't you compute that this woman
  139. 4:45that you're looking at it's not
  140. 4:46gonna be your nice little American wife
  141. 4:48she is bigger than that her dreams are
  142. 4:51bigger her person I don't his bigger
  143. 4:52long story short that marriage ended
  144. 4:55when an inlet instead of being said and
  145. 4:57feel like her life was over and she
  146. 4:59messed up
  147. 4:59she put her babies in her big car and
  148. 5:02she began to drive across America to
  149. 5:03preach the gospel she delayed heartache
  150. 5:05stop she kept going forward she was the
  151. 5:07first woman to drive in a car for one
  152. 5:10side of America to the other side that
  153. 5:12was her first big event in her life a
  154. 5:14first woman in America to drive a car
  155. 5:16across the country and this is the
  156. 5:18beginning of many firsts for her so as
  157. 5:20we go through this story and the person
  158. 6:11took her gospel car and her babies and
  159. 6:13begin to drive across the country
  160. 6:14preaching in big towns and small towns
  161. 6:17and out on the field she'd stop and
  162. 6:19she'd see the cotton pickers in the
  163. 6:21south to get stopped her car run out
  164. 6:23there and talking about Jesus and give
  165. 6:25them a gospel tract and pray for them in
  166. 6:27those days the gospel evangelistic field
  167. 6:30was open to anybody who would go after
  168. 6:32it kind of like it is today if you've
  169. 6:35got the desire you got the passion you
  170. 6:37can create anything you want to create
  171. 6:38in this world that we live in today so
  172. 6:40Amy McPherson took her car their babies
  173. 6:42and begin to preach I asked her son one
  174. 6:45time in all those early days of ministry
  175. 6:47on the in the gospel car and those tent
  176. 6:49meetings and those small convention
  177. 6:51centers what was the greatest miracle
  178. 6:52you saw I thought he would say it would
  179. 6:55be like a blind eye opening or a
  180. 6:56crippled child being healed but he told
  181. 6:59a story that I want to tell you because
  182. 7:00it illustrates her faith and her
  183. 7:02wildness of believing God for the
  184. 7:04unusual and it would get it he said we
  185. 7:06were driving across in the gospel car
  186. 7:08and we had a flat tire and we had no
  187. 7:10spare and in those days they didn't have
  188. 7:12cell phones and the homes are far apart
  189. 7:15and they were dirt roads and the night
  190. 7:17was coming on very soon and she got
  191. 7:18concerned because she was a mama with
  192. 7:20two kids in the middle of nowhere so she
  193. 7:22jumped out walked around the car a
  194. 7:24couple of times Rob said then he then
  195. 7:27she told us get out the car we're gonna
  196. 7:28pray for the tire so my mother my sister
  197. 7:31died he said laid hands on the tire and
  198. 7:33asked God to heal the tire and I felt
  199. 7:36that I under my hands reinf late and
  200. 7:38become normal we got back in the car and
  201. 7:40drove across the country and finished
  202. 7:42our trip that day in that night so to me
  203. 7:45they got to the healings of the bodies
  204. 7:46but I guess God didn't fix tires - and
  205. 7:48you need them get fixed this is a
  206. 7:50Macpherson's type of faith it is not
  207. 7:52your traditional so you don't fit in
  208. 7:54this box where everybody wants you to
  209. 7:56fit if you're a preacher you fit like
  210. 7:58this you talk like this you act like
  211. 7:59this and you believe like this hopefully
  212. 8:01you'll be outside the box - because
  213. 8:03that's what our world needs today is
  214. 8:04somebody outside of the religious box
  215. 8:07that were in now to create a signpost in
  216. 8:10the middle of the nation for Jesus
  217. 8:12Christ
  218. 8:13she went to Los Angeles and she had a
  219. 8:16meeting about 3,500 people and at this
  220. 8:18time her children get a little bit older
  221. 8:20and was time them to start school and
  222. 8:22the heart of a mother was kicking in she
  223. 8:24wanted a place where children could go
  224. 8:25to school and come home and she wanted a
  225. 8:27place where she'd have to always be in
  226. 8:29tents or be driving or going through
  227. 8:31some of the hardships of the traveling
  228. 8:33advantages that she was for most of
  229. 8:35their little their little life and the
  230. 8:37Lord told her that Los Angeles was going
  231. 8:39to be her home base while she was out
  232. 8:42there in Los Angeles she begin to pray
  233. 8:44one night in an all-night prayer meeting
  234. 8:46and when God spoke that word to her she
  235. 8:48begin to do what we call him penny calls
  236. 8:50a shopping spell they said she shouted
  237. 8:53so much that her bobby pins fell out of
  238. 8:54her hair and her heroin every place
  239. 8:56because God spoke that had given her the
  240. 8:59city of Los Angeles you know a lot of
  241. 9:01people think well that's kind of an
  242. 9:02egotistical thing well it's not
  243. 9:04egotistical if God told it to you she
  244. 9:06began to preach in that city in a long
  245. 9:09story short she built her church of over
  246. 9:115,000
  247. 9:12people she had a tithe of the Los
  248. 9:15Angeles population that time of 25,000
  249. 9:18people as the member of Angeles temple
  250. 9:20the bosom of her church so she built
  251. 9:22that church she got those limors in
  252. 9:24there and when she opened it she began
  253. 9:26preaching 21 times a week just herself
  254. 9:29well you know only do that so long
  255. 9:31before you're physically and emotionally
  256. 9:32exhausted but in the beginning Amy did
  257. 9:35all of the services she preached morning
  258. 9:37noon and night they came in from
  259. 9:39everywhere and as the church begin to
  260. 9:41grow and other pastors begin to come to
  261. 9:42help her she became famous for her
  262. 9:45Sunday evening service called her
  263. 9:46illustrated sermons Hollywood would come
  264. 9:48over to see what she was doing in her
  265. 9:51illustrated sermons to put them back in
  266. 9:52the new industry called movies the
  267. 9:55golden era movies had begin to take
  268. 9:56place in in Los Angeles she became good
  269. 9:59friends with one of the great movie
  270. 10:00stars the time called Charlie Chaplin
  271. 10:02and Charlie jumping to help her do
  272. 10:04certain things in the inner in her
  273. 10:06illustrated sermons and she would help
  274. 10:07him do certain things in his movie so
  275. 10:09they had this secret friendship because
  276. 10:11in those days Hollywood and the church
  277. 10:13were enemies they didn't think each
  278. 10:15other liked each other and they didn't
  279. 10:16in those days they fought so Amy and
  280. 10:18Charlie would we're in a restaurant late
  281. 10:20at night and bring their families
  282. 10:21together so they could talk and keep
  283. 10:23this friendship they had to keep it a
  284. 10:25secret because if Hollywood knew that
  285. 10:26charters with the famous preacher and if
  286. 10:28if the were Church world knew that Amy
  287. 10:30there was a Charlie Chaplin there'd be a
  288. 10:32problem but you know God does not always
  289. 10:34obey these kind of traditions the Holy
  290. 10:37Spirit those places that tradition won't
  291. 10:40let you and you must have decide if you
  292. 10:42want to follow tradition or the Holy
  293. 10:44Spirit I'm so glad that Amy thought of
  294. 10:46the Holy Spirit and did what she did in
  295. 10:48her day she was the first Christian
  296. 10:50radio station in America she saw the
  297. 10:53advent of radios reaching people who
  298. 10:55could not come to church or who would
  299. 10:56actively turn her on and so she was the
  300. 10:59third Christian the third station in Los
  301. 11:01Angeles the first one in America and
  302. 11:03there's a big show that they put on
  303. 11:05years there because when she turned on a
  304. 11:07radio station in California the other
  305. 11:09two stations begin to have probably
  306. 11:11because her signal was so powerful and
  307. 11:12they kept writing Washington DC about
  308. 11:15turn her down give her less wattage and
  309. 11:17falling at the end of the trial the end
  310. 11:19of the fuss Amy statement1
  311. 11:21you can't make God's voice to be second
  312. 11:23he's always gonna be first and a radio
  313. 11:25station States
  314. 11:26and they're still going today in Los
  315. 11:28Angeles Scizor McPherson had lots of
  316. 11:31things that she did right there was
  317. 11:33controversies - mainly McPherson when
  318. 11:35you're that famous you know you cannot
  319. 11:37have people go I love you I love you
  320. 11:39they're gonna something I hate you
  321. 11:40William Randolph Hearst the founder of
  322. 11:43many of the newspapers around the
  323. 11:44country and the founder of yellow
  324. 11:45journalism told us newspaper men kill
  325. 11:48Amy which meant all these fine things to
  326. 11:51come against her or miss misrepresent
  327. 11:55her and make it look like a fool so we
  328. 11:57could go through the LA Times you'll be
  329. 11:59able to see your name in the LA paper so
  330. 12:01much and most of it was negative and she
  331. 12:03asked the papers mr. Berg reporters one
  332. 12:05time why he writes only mean things that
  333. 12:07aren't true about me he goes will they
  334. 12:09sell papers and her boss wants us to
  335. 12:11always find things to make fun of you so
  336. 12:14she didn't learn how to live with a
  337. 12:15negative press when I come back in a few
  338. 12:17minutes we're gonna talk about her
  339. 12:19kidnapping the most famous part of her
  340. 12:21controversy in her life
  341. 12:23Scizor McPherson is a class act before
  342. 12:25we go to the break I want to introduce
  343. 12:27you one little clip I found some clips
  344. 12:29of her speaking in the newsreels back in
  345. 12:33those time period before they used to
  346. 12:34play on the movies so here's one of a
  347. 12:36McPherson on her way to Broadway kind of
  348. 12:38the Broadway the mecca of Finland the
  349. 12:42Citadel of worldliness oh I feel in
  350. 12:46answering this invitation as though I
  351. 12:48should like to stand in the midst of the
  352. 12:50Broadway's of America and lift up my
  353. 12:52hands and cry stop you're drifting away
  354. 12:56from the faith of your father's you're
  355. 12:58drifting away from prayer drifting away
  356. 13:00from the Bible reading drifting away
  357. 13:02from the family altar and only a ruin
  358. 13:05and a heartbreak and the home break lay
  359. 13:08in the direction of backsliding I'm
  360. 13:11coming out to help bring you back if I
  361. 13:13can to the foulest give me a burden for
  362. 13:16Souls Lord give me a love for the loss
  363. 13:22letting my heart bleed as I
  364. 13:27the Lord give me a burden for soul
  365. 13:34living Los Angeles for New York and the
  366. 13:38boats upon which we sail immediately I
  367. 13:40was met in routes by altitudes of our
  368. 13:42friends among them ever was a liberal
  369. 13:45sprinkling of newspaper men and in each
  370. 13:47city they asked the same question mr.
  371. 13:50McPherson what do you think of
  372. 13:52prohibition
  373. 13:53rather difficult to answer the question
  374. 13:56in such a few words as one must use them
  375. 13:58but I told them that the case of our
  376. 14:00prohibition here in the United States
  377. 14:02reminds me of the story of the lecturer
  378. 14:05who gave a marvelous address on
  379. 14:08prohibition and he wound up in a blaze
  380. 14:10of glory that brought everyone to their
  381. 14:12feet enthusiastically why that my
  382. 14:15friends if I had my way do you know what
  383. 14:18I do
  384. 14:18I'd take every barrel of liquor every
  385. 14:21bottle of booze every crate and I'd
  386. 14:24empty it in the river yes sir
  387. 14:27mammy said shall we now close our
  388. 14:29meeting by rising and singing together
  389. 14:31shall we gather at the river he spoiled
  390. 14:36it all and that's the way perhaps with
  391. 14:38us over here in America we teach it but
  392. 14:40so often those who profess to make the
  393. 14:43laws you're not quite live up to them
  394. 14:45and back them themselves I wish that you
  395. 14:47could all have the joy of going with us
  396. 14:49if Easter tied to the holy land where we
  397. 14:52shall visit on Easter day the tomb of
  398. 14:54our rhythm Florida my trip has convinced
  399. 14:58me that all the world is looking to
  400. 15:00America for guidance the sudden dramatic
  401. 15:03fall of the blue eagle proves the
  402. 15:06impossibility of flying on one wing
  403. 15:08namely material recovery what America
  404. 15:12needs us have gone the other wing and
  405. 15:14rise in spiritual recovery
  406. 15:16it is to be hoped that out of all this
  407. 15:18suffering may come at people
  408. 15:19understanding and return to
  409. 15:21old-fashioned Christian American

  449. 16:42other books that go with it you'll enjoy
  450. 16:43it you'll love to see what God did
  451. 16:45through a woman who kept saying yes when
  452. 16:47the world kept saying no behind me here
  453. 16:50on this set we have a scripture here I
  454. 16:52hope you can see it really good in the
  455. 16:53in the picture here and it reminds me of
  456. 16:56a store that she'd have to have
  457. 16:56stretcher Dame in her Crusades there
  458. 16:59were people who could not come and wait
  459. 17:00in the prayer lines and the normal
  460. 17:01service is the morning at night so in
  461. 17:04all of our Crusades you'd have stretch a
  462. 17:06day I'm showing you a picture right now
  463. 17:07of Amy in Denver Colorado and you look
  464. 17:10at the pictures she's there in the white
  465. 17:11dress looking out over the bottom of the
  466. 17:13audit one of all the people in the
  467. 17:15stretchers there and she takes the whole
  468. 17:17afternoon there'd be no preaching just
  469. 17:19singing and she'd be out there praying
  470. 17:21for them one by one and her philosophy
  471. 17:23was this she would not take our hands
  472. 17:25off of you and she felt the anointing of
  473. 17:27God
  474. 17:28leave her hands once it came out of her
  475. 17:29hands then her job was done is between
  476. 17:32you and God
  477. 17:32her success rate was phenomenal in
  478. 17:34getting people healed at Angela's temple
  479. 17:37though there was another thing that she
  480. 17:38would do cause there's folks who could
  481. 17:40not come and sit in the service because
  482. 17:41of their physical challenges and their
  483. 17:44illnesses
  484. 17:44she'd have ambulance day in Los Angeles
  485. 17:46and it's a fact in LA that when Amy
  486. 17:49would announce on the radio that this
  487. 17:51month on this Saturday or this Thursday
  488. 17:53is ambulance daim the sick people would
  489. 17:57start booking up all the illnesses in LA
  490. 17:59in LA County in the surrounding cities
  491. 18:01and the hospitals that have to reserve
  492. 18:03certain ones for true emergencies
  493. 18:04because everybody would book up all the
  494. 18:07images and head for Angeles temple and
  495. 18:09they've been lined up around the front
  496. 18:11of the church down the blocks around and
  497. 18:13those days her home was right next to
  498. 18:15Angeles temple and there was a little
  499. 18:16road and they'd bring the emmalin's down
  500. 18:19to her back door and she was standing on
  501. 18:21the back doorstep and get in out of the
  502. 18:23Amazon praying for the sick that way I
  503. 18:25love these kind of stories about sister
  504. 18:27McPherson I wish I had a 3-4 hours just
  505. 18:30to take her life and walk slowly through
  506. 18:32what she did how she did it how she
  507. 18:35overcame they asked at one time why are
  508. 18:38you a success why does your church live
  509. 18:40why does your meetings have so many
  510. 18:42miracles and people coming down from
  511. 18:43everywhere she goes it's because I
  512. 18:45preached the great I am NOT the great I
  513. 18:47was this is one of eight means I think
  514. 18:49some perfect simple answers of success
  515. 18:51she believed that I am was still that I
  516. 18:54am of today she'd not preached that I
  517. 18:56was he didn't do things he still does it
  518. 18:58today meeting some 18,000 people God's
  519. 19:15do that some early morning and the
  520. 19:17latest night that buildings of the
  521. 19:19Denver Municipal Auditorium will
  522. 19:22environmentalist would have to stay in a
  523. 19:24place after my meeting was over and
  524. 19:26heard the way up in the attic where the
  525. 19:28electric wires are dragged them in down
  526. 19:30out of there and get the women from out
  527. 19:32of the restroom the downstairs was
  528. 19:33barricaded the resolves
  529. 19:35in the basement to be there for the next
  530. 19:37day's meeting prepare they couldn't get
  531. 19:38inland God brought people to the altar
  532. 19:41for the thousand people converted at one
  533. 19:44service we would have to have the
  534. 19:46members and then the women are vice
  535. 19:48versa a preacher why don't every one of
  536. 19:55you folks get converted and give you a
  537. 19:57husband God sister McPherson as she was
  538. 19:59in the height of her career had one of
  539. 20:01the most controversial things happen to
  540. 20:03her this was a kidnapping now she's been
  541. 20:06kidnapped twice in her life early in her
  542. 20:08ministry a newspaper reporter was
  543. 20:10interviewing her and the Klu Klux Klan
  544. 20:12had taken her and the reporter out for a
  545. 20:14private meeting when she got done
  546. 20:16preaching to the Ku Klux Klan sort of
  547. 20:18burning the cross they were burning
  548. 20:19their hoods and getting saved so but the
  549. 20:22second time was more dramatic now she
  550. 20:24was famous all over the world she'd gone
  551. 20:26to Europe gone2asia she is at the height
  552. 20:29of her ministry the LA Church is at the
  553. 20:31pinnacle of its prestige and popularity
  554. 20:33and in the middle of this she's
  555. 20:36kidnapped and here's what happened she'd
  556. 20:38just come back from Israel and she was
  557. 20:40gonna tell the church family what she
  558. 20:42saw in the Holy Land she'd only have one
  559. 20:45service I did that there were so many
  560. 20:46people trying to get into the auditorium
  561. 20:48or a church she was gonna have to have
  562. 20:50five with those services just to tell
  563. 20:51people what she saw why she was there
  564. 20:54and they were doing some construction on
  565. 20:56the church where she couldn't get her
  566. 20:58nose together with her secretaries so
  567. 21:00they decided to go down to the beach
  568. 21:01finish her outline of what she was gonna
  569. 21:03tell that night and take a swim in the
  570. 21:06ocean now that right there's also a big
  571. 21:08deal to in Amy's life Amy was the first
  572. 21:10Pentecostal to cut her hair to wear
  573. 21:13makeup and to look fabulous you can use
  574. 21:15that word because in those days the
  575. 21:17Pentecostals have this lingering
  576. 21:19holiness mindset which had come into the
  577. 21:22flesh where it's how you look they
  578. 21:23couldn't cut the hair they look real
  579. 21:25ugly but Amy look beautiful and they ask
  580. 21:27me one time why do you wear makeup if
  581. 21:29she goes well any old bar needs some
  582. 21:31paint and I'm gonna put something on and
  583. 21:33look my best for Jesus and that's what
  584. 21:34she did so all the ladies and Pentecost
  585. 21:37around the world
  586. 21:38Oh sister McPherson a big thank you for
  587. 21:40breaking that religious stupid tradition
  588. 21:42that you can't wear makeup and be a
  589. 21:44preacher or go to church so she's out of
  590. 21:46the beach and her secretary wanting to
  591. 21:48get her some orange juice
  592. 21:49drinka she was going to a swim in the
  593. 21:50ocean and a man walked up to her and
  594. 21:53said are you sister McPherson she goes
  595. 21:55yes she goes he goes the temple sent me
  596. 21:57down here to ask you to come and pray
  597. 21:59for our child that is sick my wife is in
  598. 22:01the car up there any point of the car
  599. 22:03holding the child and would you just
  600. 22:05pray for because our child is gonna die
  601. 22:07unless God heals the child so Amy being
  602. 22:10as kind of she was said sure she grabbed
  603. 22:12the towel and put her around herself and
  604. 22:14walked up to the car talking to the man
  605. 22:16and when she bent over to greet the
  606. 22:18woman the men pushed her in and the lady
  607. 22:20in the car put her form over a nose and
  608. 22:22knocked her out and they drove her off
  609. 22:24eventually it took her to Old Mexico
  610. 22:26well the secretary comes back and thinks
  611. 22:29Amy is still swimming but then time
  612. 22:32passes and so concern sets in and all of
  613. 22:35a sudden she calls the church thinking
  614. 22:36maybe somebody picked her up and and
  615. 22:38then pretty soon they realized that Amy
  616. 22:40is gone and in a few more hours goodbye
  617. 22:42Amy is dead she drowned in the ocean so
  618. 22:45the noise went everywhere Amy McPherson
  619. 22:48has drowned the body's not been found
  620. 22:50it's a lost it scene so after little few
  621. 22:53days goes by and they can't find the
  622. 22:55body they go ahead and have the funeral
  623. 22:57the funeral her mother produces it and
  624. 23:00her mother takes the helm of the church
  625. 23:01and everybody's crying but Amy is in Old
  626. 23:04Mexico and the kidnappers keep sending
  627. 23:06kidnapping notes and they keep throwing
  628. 23:08the kidnapping notes in the trash and
  629. 23:10you go why well when you're that popular
  630. 23:12sometimes people don't realize of all
  631. 23:14the weird things that happened to you
  632. 23:16from strange people most of the people
  633. 23:18are good people but there's a small
  634. 23:19percent of folks who are always trying
  635. 23:20to do something to you that you kind of
  636. 23:23build a callousness around them because
  637. 23:25they're just simply weird
  638. 23:26or they're sent mother devil to irritate
  639. 23:28you so her mother kept throwing the
  640. 23:30kidnapping notes in the trash can but
  641. 23:32she escapes Amy does from Old Mexico
  642. 23:34walks across into Douglas Arizona while
  643. 23:38in Douglas Arizona she knocked on the
  644. 23:40first door and the guy didn't answer the
  645. 23:41door and told her to go away
  646. 23:42goes to the next house knocks on the
  647. 23:44door and collapse so the ambulance comes
  648. 23:47take her to the hospital she police
  649. 23:48comes and long story short of the
  650. 23:50survivor they asked who are you because
  651. 23:53I'm anemic first him and he goes no
  652. 23:55she's dead she goes no I am a Mesa month
  653. 23:58person so he calls the church in LA long
  654. 24:01story short she tells the secret
  655. 24:03mother only the family knows and the
  656. 24:05news of the Nelms that Amy is alive when
  657. 24:08she comes back to LA over 50,000 people
  658. 24:11meet her at the train station to welcome
  659. 24:13Amy home and then all of a sudden the
  660. 24:16Attorney General decides that she did
  661. 24:18this for money or publicity and all
  662. 24:20these things so a trial or hearing
  663. 24:22starts and they accused her of having an
  664. 24:24affair they accuse her running often
  665. 24:26doing this all kinds of things when the
  666. 24:28long story short she wins and every
  667. 24:30night after the trial she'd get up and
  668. 24:32tell on the radio what her song the
  669. 24:34story was and the interesting effect
  670. 24:36about the church the church didn't
  671. 24:38dwindle during this it stayed strong in
  672. 24:40numbers strong and money strong and
  673. 24:41support would you stay a member of the
  674. 24:44church if your pastor was on trial for a
  675. 24:46kidnapping with all the news in the
  676. 24:48newspaper being negative about him or
  677. 24:50her I don't know if today's generation
  678. 24:53has that kind of stamina but I hope
  679. 24:55we'll get back to that sister McPherson
  680. 24:57has so many more things she sold more
  681. 24:59war bonds then all the movie stars put
  682. 25:01together during the time of World War
  683. 25:03two she'd also win the awards in the
  684. 25:06Rose Bowl parade for having the best
  685. 25:07float in the Rose Bowl parade she have
  686. 25:09her own parades in Los Angeles she
  687. 25:12travel around the country she begin to
  688. 25:14build a denomination because out of her
  689. 25:15Bible School begin to come to her
  690. 25:17students and they build churches she
  691. 25:19wanted to put all those churches among
  692. 25:20this summons of God denomination but
  693. 25:22because she was divorced they wouldn't
  694. 25:24accept her so she had to build the
  695. 25:264-square denomination now let me make
  696. 25:28one comment here it doesn't matter what
  697. 25:30you go through if the matter of you keep
  698. 25:32on going so much of the time we people
  699. 25:35we have mistakes in their life we make
  700. 25:37mistakes we sin we do things that we
  701. 25:39later think we shouldn't have done but
  702. 25:41no matter what you do get up and go on
  703. 25:43the righteous may fall but they come
  704. 25:45back and Amy kept bouncing back over a
  705. 25:48kidnapping over her third marriage is
  706. 25:51about to happen in a divorce it's going
  707. 25:52to occur and I got a beautiful bride I'm
  708. 25:55very very happy
  709. 25:57I feel that I am most happy person in
  710. 26:00all the world every one of our members
  711. 26:02and fans have been so beautiful and
  712. 26:04sending in thousands of letters of
  713. 26:06telegrams and phone calls I think this
  714. 26:09is the beginning room it's very happy
  715. 26:11nice together
  716. 26:12[Music]
  717. 26:14my trip was primarily one for health and
  718. 26:18recuperation following my nervous
  719. 26:20breakdown some three years ago I'm very
  720. 26:24grateful for this beautiful rest
  721. 26:26I'm happy to be back in America back to
  722. 26:29our church into the evangelistic work
  723. 26:31and trouble our shadows cross our sky
  724. 26:35it's a marvelous thing to be able to
  725. 26:37turn to the Rock of Ages and the Lord's
  726. 26:39own work what are your plans
  727. 26:44I would have been so happy to have had
  728. 26:46him continue in the Lord's work but his
  729. 26:49life of course is in the hands of the
  730. 26:51Lord and that's something I'll be unable
  731. 26:53to decide for
  732. 26:54I have formed no plans all this news
  733. 26:58which is come to me have come very
  734. 26:59suddenly and without warning and I feel
  735. 27:01I'm equate flight get my almond know
  736. 27:03that email so Amy with you all the
  737. 27:06negatives what's the story for us God is
  738. 27:09the god of a second chance of third
  739. 27:11chance and a fourth chance and God
  740. 27:13doesn't obey public opinion if you stay
  741. 27:15committed with God you can win I hope
  742. 27:18you will enjoy the last clip I have a
  743. 27:19sister McPherson she's a class act she's
  744. 27:22one of a kind I wish I had a chance to
  745. 27:24see her as a child but I did not my
  746. 27:27grandmother tried to see her wanted to
  747. 27:28go to her Bible school but she couldn't
  748. 27:30make it from North Carolina to LA but
  749. 27:32I'm glad we had this film clip so you
  750. 27:33can least get to hear a personality she
  751. 27:35dies in Oakland California of an
  752. 27:38accidental overdose of her medication
  753. 27:40they found her not breathing well she
  754. 27:41died early that morning and even her
  755. 27:43death was a controversy her denomination
