God is at work in Kenya — Transcript

1. 0:00So, my name is James, working with One
2. 0:03Message TV.
3. 0:05And uh I had a chance to visit uh
4. 0:09the northern part of Kenya
5. 0:11to see how the One Message TV [music]
6. 0:14videos are being used.
7. 0:16I visited Thomas
8. 0:19a pastor working in Saburu area.
9. 0:22Pastor Thomas has been doing the orality
10. 0:24trainings.
11. 0:25>> [music]
12. 0:26>> And
13. 0:28when he saw the videos, he realized that
14. 0:30they are helping him
15. 0:32in his orality training because
16. 0:36orality training was all about
17. 0:39teaching the Bible
18. 0:41in the way of storytelling.
19. 0:43And then uh he saw the videos
20. 0:47and he thought, "This is a very good way
21. 0:49of telling the Bible stories."
22. 0:52And he was excited about them.
23. 0:55And then he continued training his
24. 0:58groups
25. 0:59on how to teach the Bible stories
26. 1:02through the videos.
27. 1:08So, [music] this is what he does.
28. 1:12He gets a group of pastors and leaders
29. 1:16and then trains them
30. 1:19>> [music]
31. 1:19>> on how to use the videos,
32. 1:22how to teach using the videos.
33. 1:25You [music] read the Bible story to the
34. 1:26people.
35. 1:34And then you show them the video.
36. 1:38>> [music]
37. 1:44[music]
38. 1:46>> Then you have a discussion whereby you
39. 1:49ask these people questions like, [music]
40. 1:51"What have you seen?"
41. 1:54And uh the people are very responsive
42. 1:57after seeing the videos, they are like
43. 1:59because these videos are in their own
44. 2:00language, [music] then in their own
45. 2:02culture,
46. 2:04people are dressing the same way they
47. 2:05they dress. So, they it becomes very
48. 2:09easy for them to understand.
49. 2:11So, they'll be like, "I've seen Jesus do
50. 2:13this. I've seen Moses do this."
51. 2:16And then, the other question will be,
52. 2:18"What have you learned?"
53. 2:21And
54. 2:21>> [music]
55. 2:22>> people are excited to answer these
56. 2:23questions because they they they have
57. 2:26[music] seen it. They have learned. So,
58. 2:28some will say that I've learned that God
59. 2:30can do anything.
60. 2:32Others will say that I've learned that
61. 2:34Jesus can heal me. He healed the
62. 2:36paralyzed man.
63. 2:38And many leaders
64. 2:41are embracing the idea of using the
65. 2:43videos to teach in their churches, in
66. 2:45their communities because these people
67. 2:47don't know how to read.
68. 2:49They don't know how to write.
69. 2:51So, explaining the Bible stories to them
70. 2:54becomes hard. Like, you have to you
71. 2:57yourself you understand the story maybe
72. 3:00from the language you have read, and
73. 3:02then go to them
74. 3:04and narrate it to them.
75. 3:07They get it,
76. 3:08>> [music]
77. 3:08>> but when they see it themselves,
78. 3:12they get it better.
79. 3:14So, these communities are now talking
80. 3:16about
81. 3:18seeing Jesus in their own language,
82. 3:21>> [music]
83. 3:21>> seeing a Jesus who is a Turkana,
84. 3:25a Samburu,
85. 3:26and that is very exciting for them.
86. 3:28So, they are receiving the gospel like
87. 3:31there has been this idea that
88. 3:34>> [music]
89. 3:34>> the gospel is a
90. 3:36Western thing
91. 3:37because we believe in Jesus who was a
92. 3:40white.
93. 3:42And some people think that that the
94. 3:43gospel is part of a Western culture,
95. 3:46>> [music]
96. 3:46>> so they have nothing to do with it.
97. 3:49But when they see
98. 3:51the videos that are acted in their own
99. 3:52language by their own people,
100. 3:55now it changes everything.
101. 3:57Now they feel like, "Oh, we are part of
102. 4:00the gospel.
103. 4:01We are part of the plan of God.
104. 4:03We can understand this. We can connect
105. 4:06better to these things."
106. 4:09And
107. 4:10these videos are like great too. And I
108. 4:12want to say this to the donors
109. 4:14and everyone who supports One Message TV
110. 4:18in in production of these stories,
111. 4:21that you're doing a great job.
112. 4:23And a lot of people are receiving the
113. 4:25gospel
114. 4:26because of these videos.
