- 0:00You got $378.27
- 0:02>> I literally have 47 more states to go.
- 0:06>> Yeah, I would like to control your
- 0:08browser in order to I I actually didn't
- 0:12read it fast enough to know what it
- 0:13wants.
- 0:13>> I just did the equivalent of clicking
- 0:15yes to the EULA.
- 0:16>> Don't do that either.
- 0:17>> That's
- 0:17It's like a class action lawsuit thing.
- 0:19>> God, that's that's 30 years old.
- 0:22>> That you just had sitting there and had
- 0:23no idea about.
- 0:24>> Yeah.
- 0:25>> Yeah.
- 0:29>> Tom Merritt is my co-host on Cord
- 0:31Killers. We go live every Tuesday right
- 0:33here at Modern Rogue. You are far and
- 0:35away the person I trust most about
- 0:37technology because you are both precise,
- 0:39informed, and a little bit pedantic.
- 0:42>> And so
- 0:43>> Well, I wouldn't say pedantic.
- 0:45>> I like it when Modern Rogue episodes are
- 0:47timeless, but I don't see any way to
- 0:50even poke a toe in here without
- 0:53>> Yeah, we just we just
- 0:54>> But maybe if you are looking at this
- 0:56down the road, it'll be interesting to
- 0:57see what has and hasn't changed about
- 0:59what we're talking about.
- 1:00>> We're moving from chatbots to agentic
- 1:02AI. Talk me through this part.
- 1:03>> Yeah, so chatbots, ChatGPT, Claude,
- 1:06Gemini, they're the thing even in search
- 1:08sometimes where you say, "Uh I want to
- 1:10do this. I need help with this. I need
- 1:12research on this." And the chatbot goes,
- 1:14"Great, I can help you with that. Boop
- 1:15boop boop boop. Here's a report."
- 1:17>> Right.
- 1:17>> But they don't take any action. But when
- 1:19it comes to like, "Oh, so you'll need to
- 1:21go to this website and fill out a form
- 1:23or you'll need to you know go down the
- 1:24street and talk to the person at the
- 1:26bank." It can't do that. Whereas agentic
- 1:29can.
- 1:29>> Another time capsule of this moment is
- 1:31people are dipping a toe into learning
- 1:34how to use an agentic AI, but everyone's
- 1:36like, "For what?" And uh
- 1:39was talking to our friend Andrew Mayne
- 1:41who suggested that there's a lot of
- 1:43unclaimed property and I remembered back
- 1:46when we did Hacking the System, we did a
- 1:48little segment where we would go to
- 1:49missingmoney.com, which I believe is a
- 1:51legitimate site. Also, there's a lot of
- 1:53scam sites out there.
- 1:54>> Yeah, be careful.
- 1:55>> Uh but you could look up your name and
- 1:57you could find out whether or not you
- 1:58were owed money from an old deposit or
- 2:01maybe a refund or whatever. And that was
- 2:04kind of the end of it because I looked
- 2:06up recently how much unclaimed property
- 2:08is out there. And it turned out that in
- 2:11the United States, it's estimated to be
- 2:12$70
- 2:14billion. So, that's $70 of refunds that
- 2:17everybody's owed, but I assume is just a
- 2:20pain in the butt enough to claim that
- 2:23nobody's bothering to claim.
- 2:24>> Yeah, a lot of people don't know to go
- 2:25to missingmoney.com to even find out if
- 2:27there is missing money for them. But
- 2:29then once you find it out, then you've
- 2:31got to go claim it. Congratulations,
- 2:33>> you get homework.
- 2:34>> Yay!
- 2:35>> So, what we're testing here is number
- 2:38one, does this help at all? Cuz it might
- 2:40be I know if I talk to ChatGPT, it'll
- 2:42just continuously hand me more.
- 2:44>> you, go to missingmoney.com.
- 2:45>> Exactly. You've messed around with
- 2:47agentic AI for a minute, right? What are
- 2:49first principles everyone should know?
- 2:51>> You have to remember that it is going to
- 2:53do things for you,
- 2:55so you can ask it what you want it to do
- 2:58rather than spending a lot of time
- 3:00telling it how to do it.
- 3:01>> Ooh, yeah. Instead of saying go to
- 3:03missingmoney.com and look up, say, "Hey,
- 3:06I bet there's unclaimed property. How do
- 3:08[music] I find it? Can you help me find
- 3:10it? I'm told that there's a lot of
- 3:12unclaimed property out there and that I
- 3:15may be owed some of it. Tell me about
- 3:17this."
- 3:18>> Which is a ChatGPT-like question, but
- 3:20we're going to build on it in a way that
- 3:22you can't in ChatGPT.
- 3:23>> Yeah, what else is different about
- 3:24Codex?
- 3:25>> I mean, at this point with that prompt,
- 3:26not a lot. It is just going out on the
- 3:28web and saying, "Here, there's old bank
- 3:30accounts and utility deposits and
- 3:32practical tips and things like that."
- 3:34So, you could do that same thing in
- 3:35ChatGPT. It's the next steps that are
- 3:37going to differentiate.
- 3:38>> Right. Is it possible for Codex to be my
- 3:41assistant in getting all my money? I
- 3:44guess what, we'd have to find out what
- 3:46money I'm owed and come up with a plan
- 3:49and would Codex be able to execute on
- 3:51any of that?
- 3:54>> I am very slow to ask it to start. I
- 3:57like to sketch out all the borders. Is
- 4:00that a good idea or bad idea?
- 4:01>> that is a good idea because you want to
- 4:03see where it thinks it's going so that
- 4:05you don't have to It's It's not so much
- 4:07about being safe, although that's part
- 4:09of it. It's more you don't want to waste
- 4:10time like, "Oh, no, no, no, you're going
- 4:12down a rabbit hole. I don't want you to
- 4:13do that. Let's start over again." Get
- 4:15Get an idea of Ah, okay, yes, you're
- 4:18going after the thing I want in a way
- 4:20that makes sense to me. Now go do it.
- 4:23>> So, what would you do next?
- 4:24>> Build a checklist of every place, create
- 4:26a tracker spreadsheet, help [music]
- 4:28decide which matches, draft claim
- 4:30explanations.
- 4:31>> You know what? At this point, I might
- 4:33ask it, "Great, this sounds like a good
- 4:35plan.
- 4:36What's the best place to start?" Okay.
- 4:39Okay, so now it's asking you for I'm
- 4:42going to need your full legal name and
- 4:44I'm going to need common misspellings,
- 4:46et cetera.
- 4:47>> I'm actually curious what you would do
- 4:49because I
- 4:50>> picked up a tip from you, which is,
- 4:52"Hey, maybe do a Q&A with me."
- 4:54>> That's literally what I was about to do.
- 4:56>> I've got Chrome open. You can control
- 4:59Chrome, right? What say we just
- 5:01role-play? Ask me individual questions.
- 5:03I'll answer any questions you need. Then
- 5:06I want you to just kind of go out and
- 5:07get the money or tell me where it is.
- 5:09How's that sound?
- 5:10>> And what's cool about this is half of
- 5:12what you just said could be done in
- 5:13ChatGPT, but the key was, "I've got
- 5:16Chrome open. You can control it." So,
- 5:18it'll be interesting to see what it can
- 5:20do with that that ChatGPT couldn't
- 5:22because it can control your local
- 5:23system.
- 5:24>> Great. See, and now all of a sudden it's
- 5:25not giving me a whole bunch of to-dos.
- 5:27Now we've got one question. I'm in
- 5:28Texas.
- 5:30So, that it's claim in Texas. Have I
- 5:33ever lived, worked, gone to school, had
- 5:34a bank account in other any other US
- 5:36states?
- 5:36>> Yeah, I was in California for a bit.
- 5:39I've done magic shows in literally all
- 5:4148 continental US states.
- 5:43>> Now, granted, it's it's tempting to be
- 5:45like, "Hey, just access my local
- 5:47information and answer these questions
- 5:49yourselves." But, this is a good example
- 5:51of why you don't want to do that.
- 5:53>> What name should we search under?
- 5:54>> Brian Brushwood, Brian Brushwood, Brian
- 5:58Allen Brushwood, MC
- 6:01Diggy Dog.
- 6:02That last one was a joke. Bizarre Magic
- 6:04Inc.
- 6:05>> I wonder if whether or not it's going to
- 6:07mix up the MC [laughter] Diggy Dog.
- 6:09>> Don't do that.
- 6:10>> Perfect. That's a solid name set. I like
- 6:12the I like the Diggy Dog in his early
- 6:15days. Okay, so
- 6:17can we watch what it's doing on the
- 6:20browser?
- 6:21>> Oh, now it's asking for permission.
- 6:22Explain this part.
- 6:23>> This is one of the guardrails that's
- 6:25built in so that it doesn't go off all
- 6:27rogue. It's saying, "I would like to
- 6:29control your browser
- 6:31in order to I I actually didn't read it
- 6:34fast enough to know what it wants, but
- 6:36it's probably to look up
- 6:37>> I just did the equivalent of clicking
- 6:38yes to the EULA.
- 6:39>> before you actually read it. Don't do
- 6:41that either.
- 6:42But But, it's saying like, "I want to
- 6:44use your browser, is that cool?"
- 6:45>> Allow Todex to access missingmoney.com.
- 6:48>> Yeah, and it's being very fine-grained
- 6:50and saying, "I'm going to go to this
- 6:51website, is that cool?" And before it
- 6:52adds your social security number to a
- 6:55website or anything like that.
- 6:56>> Although, even then, that may be over
- 6:57the line cuz I've noticed I'll say,
- 6:59"Just do it." It's like, "You know, I'm
- 7:00not comfortable. Don't even tell me."
- 7:03>> They do play on the conservative side of
- 7:04that.
- 7:05>> I don't see the checkbox in Chrome. Can
- 7:09I watch?
- 7:11>> Oh, oh, there it is. Okay, so yeah.
- 7:13>> Okay.
- 7:14>> It has [clears throat] its own There we
- 7:15go.
- 7:15>> Got it.
- 7:15>> Ah, verify you're a human.
- 7:17>> Oh, look at that.
- 7:17>> You're lying.
- 7:18>> We are human.
- 7:20Together, we did it. Oh my god.
- 7:23>> A lot of Brushwoods.
- 7:24>> There's more Brushwoods than I thought.
- 7:26>> Meanwhile, it's been going through and
- 7:28figuring out which of these are likely
- 7:30you and which are not. It's a bunch of
- 7:32Bizarre Magic Inc. And I think this is a
- 7:34good demonstration of we were able to
- 7:35just chat chat chat while it was doing
- 7:37the tedious work that you would have had
- 7:38to do yourself.
- 7:39>> Yeah. Although, everyone's going to have
- 7:40to take our word for it cuz I suspect
- 7:42all of this will just be pixels. [music]
- 7:45>> [laughter]
- 7:45>> Your job is really just to verify that
- 7:47you two are human, [music] even though
- 7:49only one of you is.
- 7:50>> Yeah, you know what? You're right. Oh,
- 7:51here we go. Allow So, Claim It Texas.
- 7:54>> Uh new website, okay.
- 7:55>> Allow.
- 7:56>> Ah, okay. So, now it's it's actually
- 7:59going to the place where you would
- 8:00submit your claim.
- 8:02>> When I was poking around before, it
- 8:03seems like this part is going to be
- 8:05pretty straightforward. Oh, it's
- 8:06awaiting approval again.
- 8:08Here we go. Strangely, an even better
- 8:11use case would be for money you're owed
- 8:13from settlements or from lawsuits,
- 8:15because those they deliberately have a
- 8:17whole bunch of hoops to make [music] it
- 8:19difficult in order to claim your
- 8:20property.
- 8:21>> Right. And again, you can go through all
- 8:22those hoops, but you're going to have to
- 8:24pay attention, you're going to have to
- 8:26know how to get through the hoops. This
- 8:29is going to jump through the hoops for
- 8:30you and just ask you every once in a
- 8:31while, "Cool if I jump through this
- 8:32hoop?"
- 8:33Brian Brushwood, held in Louisiana,
- 8:36amount under $25.
- 8:38Allen Brian Allen Brushwood in Texas.
- 8:40>> Yeah, that actually I was in Members
- 8:42Choice Credit Union.
- 8:44>> Uh-huh.
- 8:44>> The wow!
- 8:46>> You got 50 bucks at least, maybe more.
- 8:48>> Yeah.
- 8:50>> That's why I went to the Texas claim for
- 8:51the credit union stuff.
- 8:53>> Oh, look at this. This is a lawsuit
- 8:55litigation from my brother.
- 8:57>> Ah.
- 8:58>> So, that's claimable as well.
- 8:59>> iPhone iPad warranty.
- 9:01>> Oh my goodness.
- 9:02>> It's like a class action lawsuit thing.
- 9:04>> Yeah.
- 9:05There's a lot from Jay.
- 9:07>> Wow. $67.44
- 9:09from Members Choice Credit Union.
- 9:11>> God, that's that's 30 years old.
- 9:14>> That you just had sitting there and had
- 9:15no idea about.
- 9:16>> Yeah.
- 9:17>> Yeah.
- 9:17>> Oh, look at this.
- 9:19Audiovisual Labs Inc.
- 9:20>> What is that?
- 9:21>> I don't know.
- 9:22But that seems
- 9:23>> It's got your address.
- 9:25>> Even [music] if this takes the same
- 9:26amount of time, I I could be watching TV
- 9:28during this.
- 9:29>> that that's my point is like, yes, you
- 9:31can go through and do this yourself, the
- 9:33same way you can remodel your shower.
- 9:36>> Yeah.
- 9:37>> Or you can pay someone to remodel your
- 9:38shower. And you can watch TV or do your
- 9:42work. And you're paying for Codex,
- 9:44obviously, but it's doing all of this
- 9:46while you can get other things done.
- 9:48>> It's clicking the claim button on all
- 9:49these.
- 9:50>> Oh, yeah.
- 9:52>> And it only clicked it for the ones that
- 9:54were definitely me.
- 9:54>> address. This is the kind of stuff we'll
- 9:56get used to and won't be impressive in
- 9:58the future.
- 9:58>> It's impressive right now, though. It's
- 10:00magic.
- 10:01>> Are you an officer or the owner?
- 10:02>> I'm the owner.
- 10:03>> He liked the company so much he founded
- 10:06it.
- 10:06>> That's right.
- 10:07>> Look, this is interesting. One of the
- 10:08drop-down IDs starts with a number, so
- 10:10the normal selector format choked. I'm
- 10:12[music] switching
- 10:14to a different approach. Done. So, it
- 10:17didn't have to tell you that, and if you
- 10:18weren't paying attention, it wouldn't
- 10:19matter, but it's kind of interesting to
- 10:21be like, "Oh, okay. I see I see [music]
- 10:22why it's taking a little longer to do
- 10:24it."
- 10:24>> Yeah.
- 10:25>> And granted, there are form fillers and
- 10:27stuff that could do this, but then you
- 10:29have to call up the This is all-in-one.
- 10:31>> Fill [music] it out.
- 10:33>> See what it does. A lot of people think
- 10:35agents will just run off and do things,
- 10:37and that's scary. And I think what
- 10:39you're seeing here is it will do a lot
- 10:40of things, but it will constantly stop
- 10:42to make sure like, "Is it okay if I do
- 10:44this one next?"
- 10:45>> Yes. [music] I didn't think about this
- 10:46part. The fact that
- 10:48this really is tedious and boring.
- 10:50>> Yeah.
- 10:51>> [laughter]
- 10:51>> It's less tedious and boring than
- 10:53actually doing it yourself, but still
- 10:55tedious and boring.
- 10:56>> Got it.
- 10:58>> Say continue.
- 10:59>> Continue.
- 11:00>> Really just wants you to say continue.
- 11:02It's being a little picky. I'll avoid
- 11:03echoing any sensitive ID values back
- 11:05into the chat.
- 11:06>> And that's because it doesn't want
- 11:08anything sensitive in this cuz it's
- 11:10exposed, whereas this is all secure
- 11:12being in the browser, right?
- 11:14>> Exactly.
- 11:15>> Okay.
- 11:15>> Everything here goes to chat GPT. It
- 11:18could go to chat GPT.
- 11:20Uh and so it's saying, "That's not
- 11:22secure. Other systems on your laptop and
- 11:25the cloud could potentially read it.
- 11:27They aren't doing it right now, but just
- 11:28to make sure I'm not going to put that
- 11:31in a place where it ever could be read.
- 11:33This is on a secure connection with the
- 11:35Texas Claim Society. So, that's fine.
- 11:38You don't have to worry about that.
- 11:39>> So, I had never bothered to get an API
- 11:42before because I was never scripting
- 11:45before. But, when I got an API, it said,
- 11:48"Don't paste your key in here. It's
- 11:50unsafe. I could have a document in a
- 11:53secure place that it could
- 11:55>> Oh, cuz it doesn't want to do your SSN.
- 11:57>> Yeah.
- 11:58>> You just did something that I think
- 11:59could have thrown it off, but I don't
- 12:01think it did. You clicked next.
- 12:03>> It wanted to click It wanted you to tell
- 12:05it it was okay to click next.
- 12:06>> Yeah.
- 12:07>> So, we'll see how it it advances from
- 12:09there.
- 12:09>> Oh, yeah. I don't know if you noticed it
- 12:10says it advanced partway inside the same
- 12:12page.
- 12:13>> Uh-huh.
- 12:14>> But, now it knows where it is.
- 12:15>> That's a magical
- 12:16>> Yeah.
- 12:17It's like, "Go go go, Brett boss.
- 12:19Something weird's happening."
- 12:20>> I found the signature checkbox and the
- 12:22fields. I'll set the names now, but I'll
- 12:24leave the actual submit click. It You're
- 12:26like, "But, I did it already."
- 12:28>> There we go.
- 12:28>> How much money are you in for here?
- 12:30>> $400. $400 plus. And that's just one
- 12:34thread. There were a bunch of other
- 12:35threads.
- 12:36>> Yeah. $378. Yeah.
- 12:38>> Look at this.
- 12:39>> Write a summary of what we've done so
- 12:44far, how much is likely ahead, and what
- 12:49other similar avenues we should pursue.
- 12:54>> Yeah, cuz you got $378.27
- 12:57from just the one search of your company
- 13:00on Texas.
- 13:01>> Yes.
- 13:02>> It said there's stuff in Louisiana. It
- 13:04said there's other things out there.
- 13:05>> I literally have 47 more states to go.
- 13:09>> Yeah.
- 13:10>> So, for everybody out there who's like,
- 13:12"Why don't you just do it?" Because what
- 13:13just happened here times 47.
- 13:16>> Yeah.
- 13:17There you go. You got your report.
- 13:18Search Texas with better variants.
- 13:20Finish the Texas claim, which is with
- 13:22the the state directly. Search
- 13:24Louisiana. Search all the states where
- 13:26you had university gigs.
- 13:28>> And when it says search, it means it'll
- 13:29do it. You just need to tell it to do
- 13:31it.
- 13:31>> What would you do at this point?
- 13:34>> Well, I'm going to wait for the Texas
- 13:36claim to come. I would probably go
- 13:39through that process before I do
- 13:40anything else. Let me see how that goes.
- 13:42>> To completion.
- 13:43>> Like, is there going to be anything
- 13:44where they're like, "Wait, we got your
- 13:45claim, but we need this." Cuz I might
- 13:48need it help to do that.
- 13:49>> Right.
- 13:49>> Once I've done that, I've got a proof of
- 13:51concept. Then I will go back and I will
- 13:53use this report and say, "Hey, uh let's
- 13:56pick up where we left off. What's the
- 13:57next step? Where should we start next?"
- 14:00>> Yeah.
- 14:00>> And then do this again. What we just did
- 14:04would have taken you an hour.
- 14:07>> It would have taken me forever because I
- 14:09would never have started.
- 14:11>> You would never started, or if you did,
- 14:13you wouldn't have finished. You would
- 14:14have gotten interrupted. You would have
- 14:15got bored. You would have said, "Eh,
- 14:17this is I'll do this later." And
- 14:18instead, in 20 minutes, we got you $378.
- 14:21>> Well, and here's the fun part is if you
- 14:23get pulled away, if you're kind of the
- 14:24kind of person who's got a lot of things
