GNARLY, MESSED UP cow's hoof has a DEEP GOUGE in it!!! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This gnarly and messed up hoof belongs
- 0:02to a cow who is really feeling a lot of
- 0:05pain through it. And I'm hoping in this
- 0:07video we can change that. And I won't
- 0:10let it rush. When I see you dance and
- 0:13the moment comes when I fall and go
- 0:18slow,
- 0:19I fall into you.
- 0:25[Music]
- 0:27To me, some cows feet are a thing of
- 0:30beauty. They work functionally to keep
- 0:32the cows as comfortable as possible.
- 0:35Unfortunately though, this does not fall
- 0:38into that category one little bit. You
- 0:41can see the hoof horn is not wellformed
- 0:43and I can actually peel it away with my
- 0:45fingers. Her foot is gnarly. It is not
- 0:48smooth. It's anything but level and it
- 0:52has a huge gash on that inner claw
- 0:54towards the heel. That is the object of
- 0:57my attention during this trim. From
- 1:00experience, I know that is the source of
- 1:02her pain. You guys at home haven't seen
- 1:04this cow walk, but let me assure you
- 1:07this, she is not walking very well at
- 1:10all. I start by leveling out both of the
- 1:13claws. I need to balance them as much as
- 1:15possible before truly attacking the
- 1:18problem and doing everything I can to
- 1:21set her on her way to recovery.
- 1:25Cows often salivate when they're
- 1:27stressed out, and they don't like being
- 1:29in the crush.
- 1:33[Music]
- 1:41Towards the beginning of any trim with
- 1:43the grinder, you can push on and remove
- 1:45large amounts of huorn. But as the
- 1:48culmination of that trim near, you need
- 1:50to take small minute slithers of huhorn
- 1:53and be as careful as possible. I know
- 1:55she'll need a block, so I've also
- 1:57prepared that outer claw ready for one.
- 2:04So,
- 2:18you can see where the lamina inside her
- 2:20foot have been blown apart by this
- 2:22problem. The lamina are basically like
- 2:25lots of leaves of paper, and they form
- 2:27an incredibly strong attachment between
- 2:29the interior of the hoof capsule and the
- 2:31cow's foot within.
- 2:38Parts of this hoof horn are incredibly
- 2:40tough and you need a lot of power to
- 2:42push the knife through it. Meaning the
- 2:44delicate work can sometimes be very
- 2:47tricky.
- 3:01Working with cows in general can be an
- 3:03incredibly dangerous job. But when you
- 3:05add into the mix that you're working
- 3:07with their feet and grinders and razor
- 3:10sharp knives, it becomes very, very,
- 3:13very dangerous indeed. That's why you
- 3:16will never see me with only one hand on
- 3:18the grinder during its use. However,
- 3:20when it comes to the knife, that is not
- 3:23always possible. When it's tricky and I
- 3:26need a lot of power, I generally will
- 3:28try to use two hands. But more often
- 3:31than not, we have to stick to one hand
- 3:33and keep the other out of the way.
- 3:39We're getting close to the end of the
- 3:40trim now, and I have still to attach a
- 3:43block, but I can give her some relief
- 3:45even without a block by reducing the
- 3:48height of this inside heel. A cow walks
- 3:51on her entire foot. So, the weight of
- 3:54her entire body is being driven down
- 3:56through this painful area right now. By
- 3:59reducing the amount of hooforn on that
- 4:01inner claw, it means the outer one will
- 4:03take more of the weight. And then add a
- 4:05block into the mix. And we're aiming to
- 4:07take almost 100% of her weight through
- 4:10her good, painfree claw, which should
- 4:13lead to a far happier cow.
- 4:18I've told my friend,
- 4:21but I can't bring myself to tell you
- 4:24what I found.
- 4:27[Music]
- 4:30We build a pass
- 4:32on stolen ground,
- 4:35but now
- 4:38[Music]
- 4:40and just like that, here is the finished
- 4:42product. This is the mess we started out
- 4:45with, and in just a few short minutes,
- 4:47we've turned it into this. Yes, it is
- 4:49not beautiful, but it is on the way to
- 4:52recovery. This is a very positive end to
- 4:55the day for this cow and for team Hoof
- 4:58GP because this is the very last cow of
- 5:01our day and our week. All that remains
- 5:04is to wrap it up completely so that we
- 5:06can kill any of that digital dermatitis
- 5:08off and allow new freshorn to grow in
- 5:11its place. A problem like this will take
- 5:14months and months to completely heal.
- 5:17But over the next couple of days, she
- 5:19should feel much, much better. As she
- 5:22walks away here, we can all see that it
- 5:25is incredible how well she is walking,
- 5:28all things considered. If you've made it
- 5:30this far in the video, folks, please
- 5:32consider joining this incredible
- 5:34community, which we like to call the
- 5:36herd.
