  9. 0:21that essentially motivate any of the
  10. 0:24various types of behaviors that you'll
  11. 0:26witness in the classroom his ideas are
  12. 0:29quite simple if a student is bored
  13. 0:32they'll begin to act out young children
  14. 0:35and adolescents are subject to their
  15. 0:37emotions and many times student feelings
  16. 0:40are a result of these needs just not
  17. 0:43being met you may see a student
  18. 0:45despondent and said think to yourself
  19. 0:48what basic human needs are not being met
  20. 0:51on behalf of the child now let's
  21. 0:55identify the five basic needs described
  22. 0:59first up is survival survival is the
  23. 1:06most basic of all student needs before a
  24. 1:11student can learn anything their basic
  25. 1:13needs of food and shelter must be met
  26. 1:15when we talk about survival we mean that
  27. 1:18students must have shelter food and
  28. 1:20nurturing how could you possibly expect
  29. 1:23a student to focus on their schoolwork
  30. 1:24when they don't know where the next meal
  31. 1:26is coming from or where they're going to
  32. 1:28sleep at night if you are a teacher you
  33. 1:31must do your best to get students help
  34. 1:33first make sure these children have food
  35. 1:36to eat and places to sleep reach out to
  36. 1:39various services the next basic need to
  37. 1:43explore is belonging belonging is
  38. 1:47described as having affiliations with
  39. 1:49other students a student should feel
  40. 1:52that they are a valued part of the
  41. 1:54classroom and community every student
  42. 1:58wants to be a part of the group even the

  61. 2:51self directing onto the fourth basic
  62. 2:55need empowerment students want to feel
  63. 3:01powerful and their decisions and they
  64. 3:03want to feel that their decisions make a
  65. 3:05difference students should not feel that
  66. 3:08they are owned or controlled by the
  67. 3:10school system each person desires to be
  68. 3:13a master of their own destiny and
  69. 3:15youngsters especially don't really have
  70. 3:18a feeling that they have power over
  71. 3:19their lives too often teachers engage in
  72. 3:23contentious arguments and aggressive
  73. 3:24confrontations as again involved in a
  74. 3:26power struggle with students every once
