  1. 0:06Life changed for me in the increments of
  2. 0:09just minutes and then seconds.
  3. 0:12[Music]
  4. 0:15I didn't know it was a terrorist bomb
  5. 0:17attack till I woke up in hospital. So,
  6. 0:20um, for me, for all of us, that that's
  7. 0:23all it was.
  8. 0:29I remember we all had a little peek
  9. 0:31underneath the sheets just to see how
  10. 0:33long the stumps were and what they were
  11. 0:35looking like. We were already starting
  12. 0:37to think, well, is there enough length
  13. 0:39to make a walking a viable option and
  14. 0:43for prosthetic rehab and stuff?
  15. 0:46The consultant was very clear to me in
  16. 0:49intensive care. He said, "You will walk
  17. 0:50out of here." And I I guess for me it
  18. 0:54was about trusting them.
  19. 0:57So we started early in intensive care.
  20. 1:00So liazing with the therapist there,
  21. 1:02making sure that she could get from
  22. 1:03lying to sitting and maintain our own
  23. 1:05sitting balance, reaching those kind of
  24. 1:08things. They concentrated on building my
  25. 1:11core, building my confidence, and then
  26. 1:15working on how to get my balance right.
  27. 1:18It's all about trust. So, I'm looking at
  28. 1:20them and having to take that leap of
  29. 1:24faith, of trust that they will not only
  30. 1:28ensure that I I do walk, but that if I
  31. 1:33fall, they're there. I think for every
  32. 1:36amput, it's an emotional time when they
  33. 1:39first stand up. There's often a lump in
  34. 1:42everybody's throat when that happens.
  35. 1:44And then when you get your own leg and
  36. 1:46you're walking around on that or two in
  37. 1:48her case, you know, it is a big it's a
  38. 1:50big moment because it's it's almost like
  39. 1:52that's the start of the rest of your
  40. 1:54life. Matt was always there and I was
  41. 1:57always holding his hand and when I held
  42. 1:59his hand I felt I was invincible. I
  43. 2:02could do anything. He's like, "Yeah,
  44. 2:04make make me run, you know." Um but Matt
  45. 2:07clearly had to wean me off because I
  46. 2:09couldn't live my life with Matt. And we
  47. 2:11ended up um on one session in the gym
  48. 2:14and he was just holding on to my pinky
  49. 2:17finger and then he let go and I was
  50. 2:19concentrating so hard that he just said
  51. 2:22from a distance, Jill, you're doing it.
  52. 2:25You've built that rapport for such a
  53. 2:27long time and you've been through big
  54. 2:30steps to get to where you are. And it's
  55. 2:32that kind of final letting go bit. So I
  56. 2:36suppose it's that you know you you go
  57. 2:37from clutching to holding to resting to
  58. 2:41to nothing and then they're on their
  59. 2:43own. When I left hospital as a very
  60. 2:46beautiful gesture, he photocopied his
  61. 2:50hands and he said, "Now you'll never
  62. 2:51have to worry that you're out in the
  63. 2:54real world because you can just, you
  64. 2:56know, put my hands up all throughout
  65. 2:58your house and you'll always be okay." I
  66. 3:01think she's very special. Pretty
  67. 3:03remarkable lady.
  68. 3:05with amaze how motivated she is and how
  69. 3:09positive and how much positive energy
  70. 3:12she just radiates and how hard she is
  71. 3:15working and she finds nothing too hard.
  72. 3:20I think for me the very point that my
  73. 3:23life was saved and that I had been able
  74. 3:26to go on to create another life
  75. 3:29really has what still hasn't left me 2
  76. 3:32and 1/2 years later.
  77. 3:35She's very important to me. She's also
  78. 3:38um a marker of what my body's been able
  79. 3:41to do and that again I find
  80. 3:44extraordinary. I managed to have 37
  81. 3:47weeks of being completely mobile and
  82. 3:51then the birth that we wanted at the end
  83. 3:53of it. So fantastic. They expecting, you
  84. 3:57know, baby that's the the happiest time
  85. 3:59of their life and and when they when
  86. 4:02they in pain and you help them, you make
  87. 4:05that difference. They just just they
  88. 4:08just so happy. And seeing that
  89. 4:10difference is just amazing for me. It's
  90. 4:12just such a great motivation for me to
  91. 4:15keep going and working and I just
  92. 4:16absolutely love my job. People like
  93. 4:18Matt, people like Alina just to me
  94. 4:21epitomize what it means to be a physio.
  95. 4:24Say a medical role is about making sure
  96. 4:27we have life. A physio's role is making
  97. 4:30sure we have a quality of life. And that
  98. 4:33quality to me makes the difference.
  99. 4:36[Music]
