- 0:00The Constitutional Court's ruling paves
- 0:02the way for the impeachment of the Vice
- 0:03President. Better to step down than to
- 0:06be ousted. I am Anton Septian, and this
- 0:09is the Tempo editorial. Two years into
- 0:20his vice presidency, Gibran Rakabuming
- 0:21Raka has further tarnished the face of
- 0:23Prabowo Subianto's administration.
- 0:25Damaged by reckless policies such as
- 0:27the free nutritious meal program and
- 0:28the Red and White Village cooperatives.
- 0:31That image is increasingly scarred as
- 0:33facts emerge surrounding Gibran's
- 0:34nomination as vice president. The
- 0:37legitimacy crisis plaguing Gibran is
- 0:39the fruit of problems planted ahead of
- 0:41the 2024 Presidential Election. After
- 0:45circumventing the age requirement for
- 0:47vice-presidential candidates through
- 0:48legal acrobatics at the Constitutional
- 0:50Court, then chaired by his uncle Anwar
- 0:52Usman, Gibran maneuvered around the
- 0:53high school diploma requirement when
- 0:55registering with the General Elections
- 0:57Commission. Three years later, the
- 1:00Constitutional Court found no valid
- 1:02evidence that Gibran possesses a
- 1:04diploma or equivalence document proving
- 1:06he finished high school. Although the
- 1:10Court did not accept the plaintiff's
- 1:11request to annul Gibran's election, the
- 1:13ruling confirms his flawed candidacy,
- 1:15meaning Gibran did not meet the
- 1:16requirements to participate in the
- 1:18Presidential Election. The Court's
- 1:21ruling opens the way for the House of
- 1:23Representatives to propose impeachment
- 1:25to the People's Consultative Assembly.
- 1:29Manipulation of nomination requirements
- 1:30is a criminal offense that must be
- 1:32legally processed and constitutes a
- 1:34disgraceful act that can serve as
- 1:35grounds for impeaching a president and/
- 1:37or vice president. Politicians in
- 1:40Senayan should correct this error.
- 1:42Namely, that this illegitimate child of
- 1:44the constitution rose to the pinnacle
- 1:46of power due to his father's political
- 1:48ambition, who could not accept his term
- 1:50ending. The Court appears to be taking
- 1:52a safe stance. At the very least, they
- 1:54are deflecting the hot potato. The
- 1:56Court rejected the lawsuit by former
- 1:58Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights
- 2:00Denny Indrayana, deeming he lacked
- 2:02legal standing. According to the Court,
- 2:05the lawsuit should have been filed by a
- 2:06presidential election participant. Back
- 2:09when changing the requirements for
- 2:10presidential and vice-presidential
- 2:12candidates, the Court accepted Almas
- 2:14Tsaqibbirru's lawsuit. At the time, he
- 2:16was a student at Surakarta University
- 2:18with no legal basis to challenge the
- 2:20contested article. Back then, the Court
- 2:23was part of a sinister scenario. In
- 2:25pushing Gibran as a vice-presidential
- 2:27candidate, regarding the annulment of
- 2:28elected state officials, the Court has
- 2:30previously annulled the victory of
- 2:32regional heads whose candidacies were
- 2:34invalid. In 2021, the elected Regent of
- 2:37Sabu Raijua, Orient Patriot Riwu Kore,
- 2:40had not yet relinquished his United
- 2:42States citizenship. Indeed, unlike
- 2:45Denny Indrayana, the plaintiff had
- 2:47legal standing, but at least the Court
- 2:49has a precedent for such annulments. In
- 2:51the days ahead, the movement to shake
- 2:53Gibran will intensify. After the
- 2:55Court's ruling was issued, a group of
- 2:57citizens reported the forgery of
- 2:58Gibran's education equivalence
- 3:00certificate to the Criminal
- 3:01Investigation Agency of the Indonesian
- 3:02National Police. Politicians in Senayan
- 3:05should follow up on the Court's ruling.
- 3:08The road is indeed winding. After the
- 3:10House of Representatives agrees to
- 3:12annul Gibran's position, the ball will
- 3:13be tossed back to the Court. Then, the
- 3:15final decision will be made by the
- 3:16People's Consultative Assembly. If
- 3:18Gibran steps down or is removed, a new
- 3:20Vice President will be chosen based on
- 3:22a political decision among them. This
- 3:24negotiation is expected to open up
- 3:26possibilities that are hopefully better
- 3:28. In a shifting political landscape,
- 3:30Prabowo will not merely get a
- 3:32replacement deputy. He is expected to
- 3:34gain a new partner who makes him more
- 3:36receptive to input regarding policies
- 3:38that have often been erratic. Political
- 3:41stagnation might find a slight way out,
- 3:43as a change in leadership opens
- 3:45opportunities for civil society to
- 3:48resubmit reform agendas that have long
- 3:50been ignored. Gibran and his father
- 3:53need to know their place. His
- 3:55legitimacy has already deflated. He
- 3:57will not work effectively because he
- 3:59will always be questioned. Even until
- 4:01now, he is perceived as not working and
- 4:03sidelined by Prabowo. Some may still
- 4:06support him, but more will ridicule him
- 4:09. What Vaclav Havel said holds some
- 4:11truth. Power built on lies is easily
- 4:15shaken. See the full editorial and
