- 1:55outside you can also call it as home and
- 1:58the world this book was published in
- 2:011916 in Tagore's native language Bengali
- 2:04the story presents a very interesting
- 2:07conflict between difference in
- 2:09ideologies of two friends and the impact
- 2:12it had on the wife of one of the friends
- 2:15now mean the knot also presents a very
- 2:18interesting view on the Swadeshi
- 2:20movement that was gaining popularity
- 2:21during that time the story actually
- 2:24revolves around the ideologies and
- 2:26emotions of three primary characters
- 2:28Nikhil
- 2:29Vimala and Sandeep minimalized from a
- 2:33poor background and is married to a very
- 2:36rich Salmond our Nikhil
- 2:38Vimala knows that she is neither
- 2:40good-looking nor well-educated but she's
- 2:43a devoted wife and ensures that she
- 2:46takes care of nickles every need given
- 2:49her background she is also very
- 2:50traditional in her thinking she would
- 2:53wake up early in the morning
- 2:54touch nickels feet without waking him up
- 2:57and fill her forehead with Sindhu Nikhil
- 3:00is a very well-educated person with
- 3:04strong ideologies his parents died long
- 3:07ago and he is brought up by his
- 3:09grandmother he had an elder brother who
- 3:12also died young due to drinking problems
- 3:15it is probably these circumstances that
- 3:18Nikhil brings himself up in a very
- 3:20disciplined way he cares about poor
- 3:23people in his village and tries to help
- 3:26them with all possible amenities Nikhil
- 3:31is also very broad-minded for his time
- 3:33he wants Bimala to have full freedom in
- 3:37how she should lead her life he arranges
- 3:40an English tutor for her and also gets
- 3:42her trained to play the piano
- 3:45Nichols widowed sister-in-law who stays
- 3:48with them is particularly jealous of all
- 3:50the freedom and attention Nikhil gives
- 3:52Bimala and keeps taunting her Nikhil is
- 3:55aware of this but he chooses to just
- 3:56ignore it
- 3:57Nikhil treats her as an equal and tells
- 4:00her everything about him
- 4:02childhood his friends and he wants her
- 4:05to step out of the house and see the
- 4:07outside world he also feels that the
- 4:09outside world may want Bimala although
- 4:12she's not too keen to step outside she
- 4:15says if the outside world has gotten
- 4:17along so well without me so far it can
- 4:20continue to go on for some more time
- 4:23after his grandmother's death Nikhil
- 4:25once Bimala to move to Calcutta with him
- 4:28as he is continuing his education but
- 4:30she refuses it was the beginning of the
- 4:34Swadeshi moment in Bengal the sounds of
- 4:37Banda matram was becoming very prominent
- 4:40all over freedom fighters were urging
- 4:43people to abandon foreign goods Nikhil
- 4:47also has been trying to get things
- 4:49produced locally but he realizes the
- 4:52cost far outweighs the benefits he also
- 4:55believes that the poor people won't be
- 4:58able to afford local items as they were
- 5:00more expensive to produce than the
- 5:02foreign ones given that there was no
- 5:04industry or factories Nikhil goes out of
- 5:07his way to help villagers to get a loom
- 5:09or a rice husking machine so that they
- 5:12can think of producing things locally
- 5:14but for some reason or the other it
- 5:16never takes off and he continues to
- 5:19incur a heavy expense after which he
- 5:22realizes this probably may not work it
- 5:26was those days when Bimala heard about
- 5:28Sandeep who was Nichols childhood friend
- 5:31Bimala did not have a high opinion of
- 5:34Sandeep as she thought that he was more
- 5:36of a money minded person who used Nikhil
- 5:39to just make a living he was just using
- 5:41Swadeshi movement as an excuse when
- 5:44Nikhil was already taking care of him on
- 5:46a very regular basis slowly Bimala felt
- 5:52herself getting into the Swadeshi
- 5:54ideologies given her roots she started
- 5:57feeling the urge to shun foreign items
- 6:00and told Nikhil I must burn all my
- 6:03foreign clothes she also feels that they
- 6:06should get rid of MS Gilby who was by
- 6:08mullahs English teacher Nikhil tries to
- 6:11convince her that she need not burn her
- 6:13clothes but she can stop wearing them if
- 6:15she doesn't
- 6:15want to he also tells her that she
- 6:18should not waste her energies in
- 6:20destructive excitement Bimala realized
- 6:23that Nikhil was not against the cause of
- 6:25Swadeshi movement but he just could not
- 6:28accept the spirit of Banda Mathur him
- 6:30yet
- 6:30BIM Allah's first interaction with
- 6:33Sandeep happens when he and his
- 6:35followers come to their neighborhood to
- 6:37preach for the she there is this big
- 6:40crowd and the air is filled with shouts
- 6:42of bond a motto she notices that he had
- 6:45an amazing command over the crowd who
- 6:49was swaying to his words as he goes on
- 6:52bimla feels completely drawn and she
- 6:55pushes the screen that usually Samina
- 6:58ladies used to cover themselves in those
- 7:01days she feels that she is completely
- 7:04transformed by the end of his speech
- 7:07she's become a huge fan of Sandeep
- 7:11bommana feels a very different person by
- 7:14the time she comes home and her thoughts
- 7:16are full of Sandeep
- 7:18Nikhil notices something different about
- 7:20Vimala but he chooses to keep quiet
- 7:22Bimala and all her excitement goes to
- 7:25Nikol and says we must invite Sandy Babu
- 7:28for dinner tomorrow
- 7:30Nikhil is taken aback and he says hmm
- 7:34but Sandeep has to go to run poor
- 7:36tomorrow morning for a meeting
- 7:37Vimala stops and asks must really go
- 7:41tomorrow I really want to invite him and
- 7:44I want to serve him myself
- 7:46Nikhil is very surprised as Bimala would
- 7:50usually avoid any of Nichols friends
- 7:53coming home for dinner the next day
- 7:58Vimala gets ready and she's in very high
- 8:01spirits her sister-in-law notices this
- 8:04and she mocks her Pamela just ignores
- 8:07her and to her own surprise when she
- 8:09meets Sandeep she feels terribly shy and
- 8:12somehow manages to say that dinner is
- 8:15getting late
- 8:16Sandeep has a way with words he says I
- 8:19get dinner every day but when the
- 8:22goddess herself has appeared before me
- 8:24he doesn't matter if dinner is a little
- 8:27late Vimala realizes that Sandeep does
- 8:30not hesitate to speak his mind and also
- 8:32behaves with her in a manner as if they
- 8:35know each other for a very long time
- 8:37Vimala thinks it's probably his
- 8:39closeness with Nikol that makes him take
- 8:42the liberty and fights herself
- 8:44completely drawn to everything Sandeep
- 8:47says Bimala also realizes that Sandeep
- 8:53and Nikol are totally opposite when it
- 8:55comes to ideologies when Sandeep
- 8:58complains to Bimala about Nicholls views
- 9:01on vandemataram Nikol says it has its
- 9:04place Sandeep but I am not convinced
- 9:06about giving it the whole place I know
- 9:09my country very well Sandeep counters by
- 9:13saying that he sees God in his country
- 9:16and he has given the God everything that
- 9:18he has Nikol argues that people cannot
- 9:22harm the country in the name of
- 9:24patriotism Sandeep turns to Bimala &
- 9:30Asser what do you think Bimala after a
- 9:33little thought says I want good things
- 9:36for my country I will not tolerate the
- 9:39wrongdoing and if required I will avenge
- 9:41any insults I look at my country as a
- 9:45person someone like Goddess Durga for
- 9:47whom I'll make the earth red with
- 9:50sacrifices Sandeep lifts his arm and
- 9:53shout hooray
- 9:54and after pause correct himself and says
- 9:57one day madam Nikhil says I am NOT
- 10:02divine I am just a human I will not
- 10:04permit any evil in me to exaggerate into
- 10:08an image of my own country never to this
- 10:11Sandeep says Nikhil you see how a
- 10:14woman's heart is pure and she can be
- 10:16cruel as well when it is required it is
- 10:19beautifully fearful he looks at Bimala
- 10:22and says you are a beautiful spirit of
- 10:25fire which can light up the world and
- 10:27can burn it to ashes give us the courage
- 10:30and grace Vimala by this time is
- 10:34completely bought into Sandeep's
- 10:36ideologies Sun leaps to starts to get
- 10:39closer to Bimala
- 10:40to the extent that he comes over to
- 10:42their house even when Nikhil is not
- 10:44around the Swadeshi movement picks up a
- 10:49lot of speed in Bengal and everyone gets
- 10:52consumed by it Nikhil tries to keep a
- 10:55very rational mindset but he's not very
- 10:58happy at the way things were developing
- 11:00both at home as well as outside
- 11:02Vimala also realizes that Nikhil was
- 11:05avoiding any sort of confrontation with
- 11:08Sandeep and seems to be deep in thought
- 11:10always it was around that time Sandi
- 11:14introduces Bimala to a young lad named
- 11:17Amulya Vimala agrees to provide him
- 11:20shelter and over a period of time
- 11:22Sandeep notices a big change in Amalia
- 11:25who is ready to jump into the Swadeshi
- 11:28fire one day the youth of the village
- 11:32come in a group and demand to Nikhil
- 11:34that he should banish all the foreign
- 11:37goods from the market Nikhil refuses and
- 11:40tries to explain to the group that the
- 11:42poor people will really hurt if they
- 11:45force them to adopt Swadeshi Goods but
- 11:47they just simply don't listen Nikhil
- 11:50says the country doesn't mean just the
- 11:53soil but also the people living in it he
- 11:56continues to address the group and tells
- 11:58them you're all covered as you come from
- 12:01well-to-do families yourselves but
- 12:03you're forcing the poor people who are
- 12:05barely managing to meet both ends and
- 12:08somehow keeping up with their hard work
- 12:10you can do whatever you want to keep up
- 12:12your fanaticism but I will not let these
- 12:15people who are completely dependent on
- 12:17me Sandeep and his group are trying
- 12:22their best to get everyone converted to
- 12:25Swadeshi movement and even go to the
- 12:27extent of imposing penalties on
- 12:29shopkeepers who are stalking foreign
- 12:32goods a few traders refused to join
- 12:35hands with Sandeep and he gets very
- 12:37upset Sandeep decides to teach them a
- 12:39lesson and sets the boat of the leader
- 12:42filled with foreign goods afloat and the
- 12:44boat sinks the boatman apologizes falls
- 12:48on his feet and complaints that his boat
- 12:51was worth two thousand rupees varies
- 12:53going to afford another boat because
- 12:55that is his main livelihood somebody
- 12:58figures that if he can get the boatman
- 13:01on a side a lot could be achieved he
- 13:04somehow hatches a plan to give the
- 13:06boatman his two thousand rupees
- 13:08but then starts to think about where he
- 13:10can get the money from Sandeep is
- 13:12willing to go to any extent to get his
- 13:16costs move forward he knows he needs
- 13:20money and he has only one source where
- 13:22he can go and get the money he decides
- 13:25to use Vimala and get some money for his
- 13:28cause he convinces her that success is
- 13:32knocking at their doorstep but then for
- 13:34him to liberate the country he needs a
- 13:37mere fifty thousand rupees so that he
- 13:39can go ahead and get his plans into
- 13:42action he also suggests to Bimala that
- 13:45the money should come from Nikhil safe
- 13:47as it is Nichols country as well and
- 13:50there is no point in keeping the money
- 13:52stashed in a cupboard when the country
- 13:55is getting deprived Bimala is left very
- 13:58confused as she is unable to say no to
- 14:01Sandeep but she also knows that fifty
- 14:04thousand rupees is a lot of money in
- 14:06those times she is not sure how she is
- 14:09going to be able to get the money and
- 14:11that to how she can not only ask Nikhil
- 14:14but how she could steal however she so
- 14:18deep into the freedom movement that she
- 14:20feels that it is a responsibility to
- 14:23contribute to the movement and help
- 14:25Sandeep Sandeep and Amalia praise her
- 14:28for the sin she is prepared to commit
- 14:30for the sake of the motherland Sandeep
- 14:35knows that Vimala is completely in his
- 14:38control now he continues to use the
- 14:41fight for Sade she has an emotional tool
- 14:44to extract money from her Bimala
- 14:49realizes that she has made a huge
- 14:51mistake by stealing money from her own
- 14:54house maybe she could have asked Nikhil
- 14:56she thinks and Nikhil would not have
- 14:58said no but she has gone so deep into
- 15:02this that she regrets her whole action
- 15:06she wants to make amends and she calls
- 15:09Amulya to her house and says can you
- 15:12pawn off some of my own jewelry so that
- 15:15I can get the money and replace it back
- 15:17in nickels chest she hands over her
- 15:20jewelry box to Amulya so that Amulya can
- 15:22go to the city and sell it as she is
- 15:25unable to do it herself
- 15:27as time passes vemula's conscience keeps
- 15:31pricking her the unrest why in the
- 15:34meantime gets bigger and bigger
- 15:36now nickle is concerned has it spirals
- 15:39into a religious mistrust Bimala also
- 15:43realizes that Sandeep is becoming greedy
- 15:45and starts questioning his motive she
- 15:49also feels that she has come a long way
- 15:51in her quest for inner independence and
- 15:54somehow she has drifted apart from
- 15:56Nichols significantly she wants to get
- 16:01back to normalcy in her family life and
- 16:04she agrees to leave the village and go
- 16:06to Calcutta
- 16:07along with Nicol and the rest of the
- 16:09family one day Sandeep along with Amulya
- 16:13comes to meet nickel and Bimala and to
- 16:16Bimala surprise he hands over her
- 16:19jewelry box back to her Vimala looks at
- 16:22Amulya shockingly who says to her that
- 16:26in spite of his repeated request sandy
- 16:29forcibly takes the gel box from him
- 16:31Sandeep says that his life is in danger
- 16:34as the traders are searching for him and
- 16:37he needs to run away as he needs to stay
- 16:40alive for the sake of the country
- 16:41Vimala and Amulya both feel that even at
- 16:45a time like this
- 16:46Sandeep is only concerned about himself
- 16:48and his own welfare
- 16:50in the meantime nikhil gets the news
- 16:53that some elements are on a looting
- 16:56spree and he rushes out unarmed Bimala
- 17:00tries to stop him but he just refuses
- 17:02and leaves Bimala sister-in-law closes
- 17:06her and says you witch look at what you
- 17:09have done your actions has sent a good
- 17:12man towards his death are you satisfied
- 17:14now
- 17:16Vimala is left shattered as night falls
- 17:20the flames of the fire Rises higher and
- 17:23higher and so are the flames in Pomona's
- 17:26heart she wishes that she had never met
- 17:29Sundeep and gotten involved in all of
- 17:32this she somehow feels responsible that
- 17:35she was the root cause of all this
- 17:37trouble and praise for nickels safe
- 17:40return finally she sees a group of
- 17:43people coming with a palanquin a doctor
- 17:46who's part of the group says that
- 17:48nickels head wound is very serious and
- 17:51it is he's in a very critical state when
- 17:55Bimala inquires about Amulya someone
- 17:57from the crowd says he got a bullet
- 17:59through his art and has died Pamela just
- 18:03slumps down in a state of shock now even
- 18:09a tiger has very effectively highlighted
- 18:12the family structures and values in
- 18:14India in the earlier 20th century and he
- 18:17blends in the elements of nationalism
- 18:19and the political movement that was at
- 18:22its peak during that time he also brings
- 18:25out vimala's pain when she realizes that
- 18:28stealing from her own house means
- 18:30stealing from her country as well it is
- 18:33a turning point for her when she clearly
- 18:36understands that nickel is so right in
- 18:38stating that you cannot harm the people
- 18:41of your country in the name of freedom
- 18:43and patriotism as people of the country
- 18:46and the country are not two separate
- 18:49things
