- 0:00Melbourne, Australia, 2010. A young
- 0:02woman by the name of Phiby Hjack is
- 0:04discovered lifeless in a location that
- 0:06is far from being habitual. Her body is
- 0:09discovered at the bottom of a garbage
- 0:11chute. Phiby's case is being written
- 0:14off as a freak accident, but her family
- 0:16remains convinced, even sixteen years
- 0:18later, that there is so much more
- 0:19behind the truth of her death. I would
- 0:24like to urge everyone who is listening
- 0:25to the story of Pibi today to pay close
- 0:27attention to those specific signs which
- 0:29may indicate that a loved one of yours
- 0:31is involved in a controlling
- 0:32relationship. Good evening, how are you
- 0:44? If you don't know me, hello, I'm
- 0:46Andrew and this Friday I'm ready to
- 0:47tell you another chilling story. Today
- 0:49we're talking about a very special case
- 0:51that is very important to us,
- 0:53especially because we reached out to
- 0:54someone very close to the victim who
- 0:56kindly decided to share a few words
- 0:58about the story. This is the first time
- 1:01we've been able to do something like
- 1:02this on this channel, so we're very
- 1:04excited and proud to be able to share
- 1:05all this with you. The fact that we
- 1:08spoke with someone so close to the
- 1:10events has reminded us, and will
- 1:12certainly remind you, of how real these
- 1:15stories are and the true impact they
- 1:17have on people's lives. In all
- 1:19likelihood, this person will watch this
- 1:21video. So I invite everyone to be kind
- 1:23in the comments and to always express
- 1:25their opinion, always showing the right
- 1:27respect. But let's not digress any
- 1:29further. Let's begin. Today we are in
- 1:32Melbourne, Australia and more
- 1:34specifically we are in a very beautiful
- 1:36and wealthy area of the city, in a
- 1:38luxury building with 23 floors. The
- 1:40building that looks more like a tower
- 1:43was built in 2008 at 45 Sand Kilda Road
- 1:46, an area mostly made up of offices and
- 1:48luxury shops. Checking online, I saw
- 1:50that apartment prices hover around a
- 1:52million or slightly more, so it is fair
- 1:54to say that those who live in this
- 1:55complex certainly do not have a
- 1:56difficult financial situation at all.
- 1:58The building also has a swimming pool
- 2:01and a spa open 24 hours a day, as well
- 2:03as a gym and a video surveillance
- 2:05system that is active 7 days a week.
- 2:08Remember this video surveillance system
- 2:10, please. To access the complex, it is
- 2:12necessary to use your magnetic key,
- 2:14both to open the gate to reach the
- 2:16internal courtyard, and then again to
- 2:17enter the building itself, and finally
- 2:19once more, as is clearly required, to
- 2:21enter inside your own private apartment
- 2:23. Each apartment is tastefully
- 2:25furnished, usually with marble, glass
- 2:27and stainless steel and the walls are
- 2:29entirely made of windows, creating an
- 2:31always bright environment. It is
- 2:33precisely in this context of unbridled
- 2:35luxury that Pibi Hjack, the protagonist
- 2:38of our case, lives with her boyfriend
- 2:40Anthony Hampel. But by the way, we are
- 2:42finally back on our set. What do you
- 2:44think? I'm glad we're back here. Quick
- 2:47aside, I would like to change it
- 2:48slightly, so if you have any
- 2:50suggestions I'll read them all, sorry.
- 2:52So, before we immerse ourselves in the
- 2:54heart of this story, I must spend a few
- 2:55words specifically regarding Pibi.
- 2:58Phibbi Hjack was born on May 9, 1986,
- 3:00and her family consists of her parents
- 3:02Len Hjack and Natalie Campbell, and her
- 3:05younger brothers Tom and Nicolai. Her
- 3:07father Lenn is a psychiatrist by
- 3:09profession and is highly regarded in
- 3:10the city. The family eventually settled
- 3:13in Richmond, a residential suburb in
- 3:15Melbourne, and Pibi was described by
- 3:16everyone as being a very creative and
- 3:18outgoing young child. In fact, from a
- 3:21young age, she showed a marked talent
- 3:23in all forms of art, from writing to
- 3:25drawing, and her parents always tried
- 3:27to encourage her to cultivate this
- 3:28creative and artistic side. In addition
- 3:31to this, Pibi is also very, very active
- 3:33, she plays sports, she is athletic,
- 3:35and it seems that she and her brother
- 3:36Tom loved to challenge each other to
- 3:38climb trees. I used to climb on the
- 3:40swing that was at my grandparents '
- 3:42house. I don't know how the hell I did
- 3:43it. In fact, they called me monkey.
- 3:45Well, with the arrival of adolescence,
- 3:47something broke. Infibi. In fact, at
- 3:49the age of 13, she began to hang out
- 3:51with some not-so-healthy people for her
- 3:53. Her friends would spend all their
- 3:55free time doing everything that is most
- 3:57wrong for a teenager to do, which is to
- 3:59say drinking and experimenting with
- 4:01illegal substances. Specifically, Fibi
- 4:03began drinking alcohol in the afternoon
- 4:05and smoking marijuana at a young age.
- 4:08From what we understand, Fibi's friends
- 4:10did not come from disadvantaged
- 4:12families; on the contrary, they were
- 4:13all from good families, so it can be
- 4:15assumed that this behavior was linked
- 4:17to some sort of rebellion against her
- 4:19parents rather than a real need to
- 4:21escape from a degraded environment. So,
- 4:24Pibi's lifestyle became quite unhealthy
- 4:27. She began going out every weekend
- 4:29with her group of friends to clubs and,
- 4:31although they were all still minors,
- 4:32they managed to get in anyway and find
- 4:34a way to have fun with both alcohol and
- 4:36drugs. It is a bit of a paradox, but
- 4:39since Pibe began leading this unhealthy
- 4:41lifestyle, she has become even closer
- 4:43to her maternal grandmother, a woman
- 4:46whose name is Janette. In a short time,
- 4:48she bonded deeply with her grandmother,
- 4:49taking her as a point of reference, as
- 4:51an example to follow, and as a
- 4:52fundamental pillar within her own life.
- 4:54For this reason, she confided in her
- 4:56almost immediately, rather than in her
- 4:58parents, and told her everything she
- 5:00was up to at that time and Janette,
- 5:02with the wisdom of a grandmother, gave
- 5:03her some advice, but not the typical
- 5:05advice that any grandmother would give.
- 5:08In fact, thanks to her past experience
- 5:10with certain substances, she was able
- 5:11to give Fibi some excellent advice. She
- 5:14knew this world well and was aware of
- 5:16the consequences that these substances
- 5:17can have on the brain after prolonged
- 5:19use, especially if the use began during
- 5:21adolescence. Janet told her
- 5:23granddaughter that, in her opinion,
- 5:24some people really ought not take these
- 5:26substances at all due to their fragile
- 5:27psyche, and she went on to explain that
- 5:29using those drugs regularly could
- 5:30potentially fuel her recent mood swings
- 5:32even more than they currently do. Pibi
- 5:34listened carefully to her grandmother's
- 5:36advice and for a while tried to stay
- 5:38away from these environments and when
- 5:40she turned 16 she realized her
- 5:41potential. In fact, Fibi grew up to be
- 5:43a beautiful and talented young woman,
- 5:44and this certainly did not go unnoticed
- 5:46by anyone at all. She is not only very
- 5:48beautiful aesthetically, and I know
- 5:49that it may seem trivial at times to
- 5:51report some of the praise from friends
- 5:53or acquaintances, but this time it is
- 5:55appropriate because according to their
- 5:57words she truly had an incredible aura,
- 5:59she attracted people like a magnet.
- 6:01Everyone who knew her agreed that she
- 6:03had an extraordinary energy. Pibi was
- 6:06like a fan fatal who had the power to
- 6:08attract others to her, but at the same
- 6:10time maintain that aura of mystery
- 6:12around her. In addition to this, she is
- 6:15a very independent girl even at a young
- 6:16age and this detail is nothing more
- 6:18than an added value in the eyes of
- 6:19those who look at her. The fact that
- 6:21she is charismatic and enterprising
- 6:23makes her even more beautiful and
- 6:24magnetic in the eyes of boys who always
- 6:26fall for her at the first opportunity.
- 6:29However, this enchanting beauty also
- 6:31seems to be a condemnation for her who
- 6:32in adolescence continues to struggle
- 6:34with mood swings and unfortunately also
- 6:36substance abuse. Also at the age of 16,
- 6:44the relationship between her and her
- 6:45parents becomes complicated. We have
- 6:47all gone through the adolescent phase,
- 6:49which is not easy for anyone, and given
- 6:51that she had so many things on her mind
- 6:53, it created a definitive break within
- 6:55her. For this reason, one day, she
- 6:57decided to run away from home and for
- 6:59almost a month she went to live in an
- 7:00apartment with five other girls,
- 7:02probably running away from a difficult
- 7:04situation. During this period, Pibi
- 7:06turned to drugs even more. The
- 7:08situation at home was not great, as you
- 7:10can imagine, especially for a 16-
- 7:12year-old girl who struggles with mental
- 7:14health. In the end, however, she
- 7:15decided to return home, but from that
- 7:17moment on her mental health suffered an
- 7:19even more intense decline. Her mood
- 7:21swings became increasingly evident and
- 7:23Fibia alternated between very
- 7:25depressive and manic phases. Her father
- 7:27Len, who I remind you is a psychiatrist
- 7:29, was obviously very attentive to his
- 7:30daughter's symptoms and for this reason
- 7:32he decided to have her start a course
- 7:34with another professional, also a
- 7:35psychiatrist. After a few sessions, she
- 7:37was diagnosed with depression, which is
- 7:39why she was prescribed antidepressants.
- 7:41Len, the father, is not very
- 7:43enthusiastic about this choice. In fact
- 7:45, he does not agree with the idea of
- 7:47giving such powerful psychotropic drugs
- 7:48to a teenager, also because Fibi has
- 7:50not shown herself to be very consistent
- 7:51in taking them from the beginning.
- 7:53However, within this state of apparent
- 7:55and lacking stability, Fibi begins
- 7:56attending her classes with greater
- 7:57frequency, and it is precisely during
- 7:59this period that she enters into a
- 8:01relationship with an older boy. In fact
- 8:02, her boyfriend is a physical education
- 8:04teacher who, however, I must specify,
- 8:06does not teach at the same school as
- 8:08her. In another small detail, he is 10
- 8:11years older than her. Ouch! Fibia's
- 8:13mother has stated that her daughter has
- 8:15always felt a strong attraction toward
- 8:16boys who are older than she is. This is
- 8:18certainly because Natalie herself and
- 8:20Pibi's grandmother, Janette, had always
- 8:21been with older men, so perhaps she
- 8:23took inspiration from them. In any case
- 8:25, the family does not see it as a
- 8:27problem at all, I must say that. So
- 8:28much so that Phi continues this
- 8:30relationship for almost a year. Her
- 8:31depression, however, continues to knock
- 8:34on her door cyclically and she
- 8:35continues to drown her ailments in
- 8:38alcohol in an increasingly harmful way.
- 8:41Throughout her adolescence, the girl
- 8:42struggles with mental health problems,
- 8:44but also with alcohol abuse, a
- 8:45substance that she can no longer give
- 8:47up, that she can no longer enjoy for
- 8:48recreational purposes. Janet, her
- 8:50grandmother, is likely the person who
- 8:52remains closest to her throughout this
- 8:54difficult period; Pibi considers her a
- 8:55vital point of reference, viewing her
- 8:57as that special figure, that pillar who
- 8:59is always ready to support her and to
- 9:00understand her even in any moment of
- 9:02difficulty she might be facing. So,
- 9:03despite all of these obstacles, Fibi
- 9:05still manages to successfully complete
- 9:06the entirety of her studies and finally
- 9:07obtain her diploma. And for her, this
- 9:09represented a great victory, a clear
- 9:10sign that, despite everything, she had
- 9:12not surrendered and had fought with all
- 9:13her strength, ultimately achieving a
- 9:15goal that was nonetheless important.
- 9:17After her studies, she immediately
- 9:18started working. She found a job as a
- 9:20receptionist at a very renowned beauty
- 9:22salon in Melbourne, Salon 579. Salon
- 9:24Salon 579. This beauty salon was
- 9:26frequented by celebrities and important
- 9:28people from the area and it was there
- 9:30that Pibi managed to carve out a place
- 9:32for herself among the Melbourne elite,
- 9:34attracting the attention of some
- 9:35important people. And it was right here
- 9:38that one day, around the middle of 2009
- 9:40, she met the man who would become her
- 9:41boyfriend, an individual by the name of
- 9:43Anthony Hampel. Anthony was older than
- 9:45Pibi. At this point, she was 23 years
- 9:48old, while he was almost 40. But as we
- 9:50have already said, the age difference
- 9:51was not even something to consider for
- 9:53her, in fact it was an added bonus. In
- 9:56any case, Anthony was immediately
- 9:57struck by Pibi's beauty. As we have
- 10:00said, she had this magnetic charm that
- 10:01attracted everyone and in fact he
- 10:03wasted no time in asking her out to
- 10:04dinner. She accepted and the two began
- 10:07dating. Their relationship evolved very
- 10:09quickly, so much so that after only 5
- 10:11months he suggested that they move in
- 10:13together. But before we delve into this
- 10:16coexistence, and there will be a lot to
- 10:18say, let's also spend a few words on
- 10:20Anthony. Antony, as we were saying, is
- 10:22a man of integrity. He is almost 40
- 10:24years old, has a very successful career
- 10:27and, when he met Fibia, he even had his
- 10:29own agency, the Alive Events Agency: an
- 10:31agency that deals with the management
- 10:33of event promotions, as well as product
- 10:35launches for important brands or
- 10:37trademarks. When Anthony finished his
- 10:39studies in the late eighties, he began
- 10:40working for some Australian television
- 10:42networks, but he quickly realized that
- 10:44was not his true path and that he would
- 10:46much rather prefer to host a program of
- 10:47his own. Then he realized that
- 10:50television was not really what he liked
- 10:51because he would like to work with
- 10:53important people who also work in
- 10:55television, but what he wanted was to
- 10:56create his own brand, his own unique
- 10:58identity that would make him stand out
- 11:00among the celebrities of the moment. So
- 11:02yes, something connected to TV, but
- 11:04very indirectly, right? In the 90s, he
- 11:06began to promote major festivals around
- 11:09Australia and later abroad, such as the
- 11:11Phoenix Festival, a 4-day music event
- 11:14held in the United Kingdom that
- 11:16features internationally renowned bands
- 11:18. He also promoted other major events
- 11:20and, after spending a few years in
- 11:22England, he returned to Australia in
- 11:24the late 90s and began to organize
- 11:26concerts, including major concerts by
- 11:28world-class bands and artists such as
- 11:29AC/DC, Prince, and Michael Jackson.
- 11:35Noting the success he achieved, in 1998
- 11:38Anthony decided to start his own event
- 11:40organization business, which he called
- 11:43Think Creative Events. And this period
- 11:45of his life would prove to be
- 11:47fundamental in paving the way for his
- 11:48future agency, because by doing so
- 11:50Anthony had the opportunity to work in
- 11:51a completely independent manner and to
- 11:53define the core values that would
- 11:54characterize his own brand. At this
- 11:56point, he began to work on the
- 11:57promotion of events and the launch of
- 11:59several luxury brands. An important
- 12:01collaboration occurred when he had to
- 12:03design the global launch event for
- 12:05Kylie Minogue’s first fragrance. What
- 12:07happened to Kylie Minogue? Well, since
- 12:09Anthony founded his own business, he
- 12:11has become one of the most respected
- 12:12organizers and promoters of Inter in
- 12:14Melbourne. Everyone in the industry
- 12:16knows his name, he has his story, his
- 12:18agency and Anthony himself boasts of
- 12:21having a super talented team of
- 12:22coordinators, directors and organizers.
- 12:25Today, in addition to working with
- 12:26important people and very famous
- 12:28artists, he also collaborates with the
- 12:29wealthiest brands and companies in the
- 12:31world. We're talking about L'Oreal if
- 12:33we stay on the subject of fashion, but
- 12:35also 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney
- 12:37if we get into the film industry, as
- 12:38well as other musical artists and
- 12:40producers. If you search the web, there
- 12:42are numerous pages dedicated to him,
- 12:44his story and his work. I won't deny
- 12:46that I have browsed through these very
- 12:48pages quite a bit, both to understand
- 12:50his career path better and to grasp how
- 12:51this man, Anthony, navigated his life
- 12:53within this world. We can therefore say
- 12:55that Anthony is a man who has managed
- 12:57to make his way into the Australian
- 12:58elite starting from scratch. You might
- 13:00think, right? Or maybe not from scratch
- 13:03. I do not doubt that Anthony worked
- 13:05hard in order to get to where he is
- 13:07right now. However, it can’t be said
- 13:09that he was born into a disadvantaged
- 13:11or normal background either. His father
- 13:13, in fact, is not just any man, but a
- 13:15man named George Hampel. Well, George
- 13:18served as a judge of the Supreme Court
- 13:20of Victoria from 1983 to 2000, having
- 13:22practiced as a lawyer for his entire
- 13:24professional life. It must be said,
- 13:26however, that Georgia, unlike Anthony,
- 13:28her son was not born into a privileged
- 13:30background. He in fact comes from
- 13:31Poland, where he was born in 1933
- 13:33before the outbreak of World War II, so
- 13:35it was certainly not the most peaceful
- 13:37of times to be born. For this reason,
- 13:39his family found themselves compelled
- 13:40to flee from Poland following the
- 13:42German invasion, and they took refuge
- 13:43in Russia for the duration of the war
- 13:45years. After the war concluded, the
- 13:46family relocated to France and later to
- 13:48Australia, where George attended
- 13:49Melbourne High School; it was there
- 13:51that he developed a deep passion for
- 13:52law, which eventually led him to the
- 13:54decision to enroll at the university
- 13:55for his further studies. He has held
- 13:57numerous positions in his life,
- 13:59including Vice President of the Bar
- 14:01Council of Australia, Vice President of
- 14:03the Victorian Bar Institute, and
- 14:04Chairman of the Victorian
- 14:06Constitutional Commission. These are
- 14:08fairly important roles. Since 2000,
- 14:10immediately after concluding his career
- 14:11as a judge, he began teaching, becoming
- 14:13a Professor of Advocacy Practice at
- 14:14Monash University as well as serving as
- 14:16Chairman of the Legal Practice Board of
- 14:18Victoria, maintaining a significant
- 14:19role in the legal community. He has
- 14:21also served as President of the
- 14:22International Institute of Forensic
- 14:24Studies; furthermore, he is widely
- 14:25considered a leader in the teaching of
- 14:27advocacy, and together with his wife,
- 14:29he has personally trained the various
- 14:30public prosecutors who specialize in
- 14:32war crimes at the Hague. All this to
- 14:34say that he is a highly respected man
- 14:37in the field. His wife's name is
- 14:39Felicity Hample and she is a Kurt
- 14:41County Judge in Victoria. Anthony is
- 14:44not actually the biological son of
- 14:45Felicity, in the sense that Georgia
- 14:47already had Anthony from a previous
- 14:48relationship, which makes him the
- 14:49woman's stepson in this family dynamic.
- 14:51Anthony also has a younger sister named
- 14:53Cristina, and we shall be talking about
- 14:54her again later on in our story. Both
- 14:57Anthony and Cristina, so we get to the
- 14:58reason why I wanted to talk about their
- 14:59father, they had the opportunity to
- 15:00study at the best schools, both high
- 15:02schools and universities. And I'll
- 15:04mention it now, the fact of being the
- 15:06children of two judges has certainly,
- 15:08let's say, helped these two guys find
- 15:10some shortcuts, but for now we won't
- 15:12add anything else. You'll soon
- 15:13understand what I'm talking about. We
- 15:20left off in 2009, the year in which
- 15:22Anthony opened his agency and met Phibi
- 15:23, who at the time was working as a
- 15:25receptionist in this rather well-known
- 15:26and fairly renowned beauty salon. Well,
- 15:29after only 5 months of dating, Anthony
- 15:31asked her to move in together and Phibi
- 15:33was initially quite enthusiastic about
- 15:35the proposal, which is why she accepted
- 15:37and moved in with him with all her
- 15:39things. And what can I say? Anthony
- 15:41surely does not like simple things, not
- 15:43even when it comes to the matter of his
- 15:44own private apartment. He lives in one
- 15:47of the most luxurious buildings in
- 15:49Melbourne, the Balensea Apartments that
- 15:51I introduced you to at the beginning of
- 15:54the video, the one with the apartments
- 15:56entirely covered in glass, 23 floors,
- 15:597/7 video surveillance, a 24-hour
- 16:01reception, which is like living in a
- 16:03hotel every day. And from the moment
- 16:06Phiby moves in with Anthony, she gets
- 16:07her first real taste of what a true
- 16:09luxury lifestyle is actually like.
- 16:11Fully-paid dinners, aperitifs in
- 16:13incredible places, exclusive
- 16:14invitations to promotional events and
- 16:16everything else that goes with it.
- 16:18During that same period, several
- 16:19changes also occur in her life,
- 16:21including within her work environment,
- 16:22given that shortly after moving she
- 16:24decides to leave her job there at the
- 16:26salon. It seems it was Anthony himself
- 16:28who pressured her to quit that job, as
- 16:30he felt the role of receptionist was
- 16:31far beneath the lifestyle he expected
- 16:33them to maintain and wanted to project
- 16:34to the rest of the world. Anthony then
- 16:36decides to find her a job, leveraging
- 16:38the numerous connections he has within
- 16:39an advertising agency to secure a
- 16:41position for her. The agency was owned
- 16:42by a friend of Anthony's and was
- 16:44looking for new people to hire. However
- 16:45, it appears that Pibi likes this new
- 16:47job; she enjoys the new environment and
- 16:48finds it pleasant to work in a sector
- 16:50that does not stray too far from the
- 16:51field Anthony is in. This, in a certain
- 16:53sense, gives her a sense of belonging,
- 16:55makes her understand that she too has
- 16:57potential and is not just "the girl
- 16:59from". The thing is, by working only
- 17:01three days a week, despite the fact
- 17:03that the pay is very good, Fibi still
- 17:05can't put any money aside because she
- 17:07gives almost everything to Anthony to
- 17:08split the expenses and buy things for
- 17:10herself. Which, I mean, if he is very
- 17:13rich and is doing very well and she
- 17:15works part-time, it doesn't seem very
- 17:17fair to split the expenses like that,
- 17:20does it? And in fact this inevitably
- 17:22leads to a sort of economic dependency,
- 17:24because if Fibi doesn't have enough
- 17:26money to live on or has just enough
- 17:27money to survive, it is clear that she
- 17:29will rely on Anthony for everything
- 17:30else and economic dependency is not the
- 17:32only aspect that emerges after the
- 17:33first few months of living together. In
- 17:36fact, beyond this, Pibi also begins to
- 17:37distance herself from all of her
- 17:39childhood friends, one by one, as if,
- 17:40little by little, the world around her
- 17:42had started to close in, until it left
- 17:44space only and exclusively for the
- 17:46presence of Anthony. And if you've been
- 17:47following me for a while, you already
- 17:49know that this is a red flag. Crazy. In
- 17:52fact, even her appearance slowly begins
- 17:54to change. Fibi, for example, had
- 17:56always had long, brown hair, but now
- 17:58with Anthony she completely changes her
- 18:00look and cuts her hair into a bob and
- 18:01dyes it black. Suddenly she appears
- 18:03very different, more elegant, more
- 18:05sophisticated and with an even more
- 18:07mysterious aura than before. However,
- 18:10living together is quite turbulent from
- 18:12the start. This is because Anthony and
- 18:14Fibi have two completely opposite
- 18:16visions of what they call home. For
- 18:18example, Anthony has a cleaning lady
- 18:20who comes to his house every Wednesday
- 18:22and what the lady always says is that
- 18:24the house seems uninhabited, empty.
- 18:27This is because he has a fixation on
- 18:28order and cleanliness. Every time, she
- 18:31says, it's like walking into a hotel
- 18:32room and into a suite. Anthony also has
- 18:35a very minimalist style. His goal, in
- 18:38fact, is to make the house appear
- 18:39uninhabited; at least, that is what his
- 18:41intention seems to be. So there
- 18:43shouldn't be too many objects on
- 18:45display, no paintings on the walls, no
- 18:47colors in general. However, Fibi is the
- 18:49complete opposite. She's the creative
- 18:51side of the couple, don't you remember?
- 18:53She is the typical girl who likes
- 18:54sitting on the floor to draw, or who
- 18:56throws her clothes onto a chair, and
- 18:57she enjoys hanging all of her various
- 18:59creations around. Fibi needs to feel
- 19:01alive and to feel that the environment
- 19:02around her reflects her very artistic
- 19:04personality. She likes to have chaos
- 19:07around her, she likes to have her
- 19:08personal belongings within reach and in
- 19:10general she feels comfortable in an
- 19:12environment full of art and life.
- 19:14Anthony, however, has to maintain this
- 19:16impeccable aura. He prefers not to show
- 19:18too much, or he chooses to show only
- 19:19the bare minimum required. This is also
- 19:21reflected in his clothing. We always
- 19:23see him dressed in super expensive
- 19:25tuxedos and elegant shoes, so it's
- 19:26clear that he wants everything around
- 19:28him to reflect a perfect and
- 19:29well-groomed image. And over time, it
- 19:31becomes clear that he wants to transmit
- 19:33this vision to Fibi as well. You can
- 19:34see it in her aesthetic changes and
- 19:36then also in her behavior, and her
- 19:37family also notices it. In particular,
- 19:39her parents go to visit her every now
- 19:40and then, right? At Anthony's apartment
- 19:42and every time they go in they always
- 19:44think the same thing. This doesn't seem
- 19:46like Pibi's home. In the house, in fact
- 19:48, there is nothing of her; there are no
- 19:50photographs, there are no personal
- 19:51effects, and there is no trace of her
- 19:53art or of her energy remaining anywhere
- 19:55. The contrast is quite evident,
- 19:57considering that Fibia has always had
- 19:58the habit of decorating the environment
- 20:00around her, in her own image and
- 20:01likeness. Now it is no longer possible
- 20:04to do so and her family agrees that
- 20:06seeing her in such an impersonal,
- 20:07practically anonymous environment does
- 20:09not reflect her personality at all.
- 20:12Unable to express herself freely at
- 20:14home, Phibi gradually stops creating
- 20:16her art, stops painting, stops drawing,
- 20:18and stops making a mess in her
- 20:19environment, eventually becoming more
- 20:21and more withdrawn. It is as though all
- 20:24her energy and her colors had been
- 20:26drained away by the dismal grayness of
- 20:28Anthony's apartment, and by his own
- 20:30personal behavior too. She therefore
- 20:32decides to begin a new path with a
- 20:33psychologist, a woman named Joanna
- 20:35Young, with whom she will confide a
- 20:37great deal, including regarding the
- 20:38dynamics of her relationship. As we
- 20:41could have guessed, Phibi is not very
- 20:42happy in this relationship. In fact,
- 20:44Anthony gradually reveals himself for
- 20:47what he is: a controlling man. During
- 20:49the sessions, Fibi says that he often
- 20:51belittles her, makes her feel
- 20:53inadequate and somehow always inferior
- 20:54to him. The more time passes and the
- 20:57sessions continue, the more Fibi
- 20:59describes the relationship as something
- 21:00suffocating and, as we know, she has
- 21:02always been a bit prone to addictions
- 21:04since she was little and now that she
- 21:05is going through this period of malaise
- 21:07, she turns to alcohol again. Anthony
- 21:10is very hard on her, in the sense that
- 21:12he never misses an opportunity to tell
- 21:14her that she drinks too much, that she
- 21:16needs to stop, that she is always
- 21:17drinking like she doesn't know. At the
- 21:20same time, he drags her to events where
- 21:21the only thing they do is drink
- 21:23champagne in crazy places, dressed in
- 21:25elegant and super-pretty clothes. So
- 21:27Fibi, in a certain sense, feels trapped
- 21:29. On the one hand, he tells her that
- 21:32she needs to stop, but at the same time
- 21:34he doesn't support her at all, instead
- 21:35he takes her to places where her
- 21:37addiction finds space, making her feel
- 21:38guilty about this too. And it's not
- 21:41just the psychologist who notices that
- 21:43the relationship is taking an unhealthy
- 21:44turn. Janet, Fibi's ninth, also notices
- 21:47many details that she doesn't like. We
- 21:49can see Janet as the wise woman of the
- 21:51family, right? She has been a
- 21:52supporting figure for Pibi since she
- 21:54was a child and she is still now that
- 21:55she is an adult, perhaps because her
- 21:57granddaughter reminds her of herself in
- 21:59the past. It is precisely for this
- 22:01reason that she is close to her during
- 22:02this period. She calls her often and
- 22:03wants to stay informed about the
- 22:05developments in her relationship with
- 22:06Anthony. Her mother Natalie is also
- 22:08very worried. Moreover, on one specific
- 22:10occasion, she even witnesses a heated
- 22:11argument between them in person.
- 22:13Essentially, Anthony was abroad for
- 22:14work and he had made Fibi promise that
- 22:16she would not drink a single drop of
- 22:17alcohol at all during the time of his
- 22:19absence. She had promised him, but one
- 22:21evening she went to an art exhibition
- 22:23not far from her home, and on that
- 22:24occasion, she had ended up having a
- 22:26drink. At least she had been honest,
- 22:27she had told him straight away on the
- 22:29phone, she could have left him alone.
- 22:30But he had reacted by going completely
- 22:33crazy. He called her, bombarded her
- 22:35with messages, and asked her if she was
- 22:37with other men. At one point, Natalie,
- 22:38her mother, went to pick Fibi up from
- 22:40the exhibition and the two returned
- 22:42home together. Fibi decided to stay
- 22:43overnight at her mother's house that
- 22:45night. That day, Natalie was the one
- 22:47who heard with her own ears the furious
- 22:49argument between her daughter and
- 22:50Anthony, and in her head the idea that
- 22:52he was not the right person for her
- 22:54became increasingly solid. And it is
- 22:56not out of the question that Fiby
- 22:57herself was also convincing herself
- 22:59that the relationship was not the best
- 23:00thing for her mental well-being. In
- 23:02fact, during the same period, she began
- 23:04spending more time away from home,
- 23:05probably so as not to see Anthony too
- 23:07much and above all so as not to remain
- 23:09locked up in that house that did not
- 23:11belong to her and did not reflect her
- 23:12at all. She also enrolled in an evening
- 23:15art and writing course in order to keep
- 23:17her mind busy and rediscover a bit of
- 23:19that artistic vein that she had
- 23:20completely lost with Anthony. So she
- 23:22tried, she tried to come back to
- 23:24herself. The months passed, it was the
- 23:31summer of 2010, so not even a year had
- 23:33passed since Anthony and Fibi had been
- 23:35together, but things were not going
- 23:36very well. Fibi had lost weight, she
- 23:38drank a lot, she dragged herself to
- 23:40work and she was no longer even
- 23:41interested in creating art. Furthermore
- 23:43, there was something that was causing
- 23:44her a lot of anxiety, namely a trip to
- 23:46Paris booked for the end of that year,
- 23:48a trip together with Anthony. Pibi
- 23:50fears that something bad might happen
- 23:51during this trip, since she and Anthony
- 23:53have only been arguing, and her
- 23:55greatest fear is that she might find
- 23:56herself in a foreign country, very far
- 23:58away from home, left entirely on her
- 24:00own and without a single penny. Yes,
- 24:02because at this point Pibi has no money
- 24:04and here we return to the dynamics of
- 24:06economic dependence. Since Anthony had
- 24:09found Fibi this job for three days a
- 24:10week, it is clear that he also knew
- 24:12full well that she would not have been
- 24:13able to earn enough money to save any.
- 24:15In fact, everything that Pibi earned,
- 24:17she gave to Anthony to cover the
- 24:18expenses for the apartment, and she
- 24:20spent whatever was left on her own
- 24:22personal things. It was therefore a
- 24:23deleterious and toxic situation, and
- 24:25Fibi reached a point where she simply
- 24:26could not take it anymore; for the
- 24:28first time, the idea of leaving—of
- 24:30leaving without looking back—came
- 24:31into her mind, and this specific
- 24:33thought began to do nothing but become
- 24:34clearer and clearer. Day after day, on
- 24:37October 20 of the same year, still in
- 24:392010, Pibi left the house with one idea
- 24:41in mind: that she would never return to
- 24:44that apartment that was suffocating her
- 24:46. He decides to take a train and go to
- 24:48his grandmother's house, who doesn't
- 24:50live in Melbourne but in a city called
- 24:52Mallacuta. Looking at the map, I saw
- 24:54that it's about 6 hours away. This
- 24:56choice of Phi speaks volumes about how
- 24:57he was feeling during that period,
- 24:59because Grandma Gianette has always
- 25:00been his confidant, the one person with
- 25:02whom he felt truly safe and secure at
- 25:03all times. And in fact, as soon as he
- 25:05gets to her house, Phiby opens up
- 25:06completely and finally confesses that
- 25:08he doesn't want to stay with Anthony
- 25:10another day. He tells her that he has a
- 25:12lot of plans, that he wants to move to
- 25:13India and do volunteer work, but that
- 25:15he needs a break. He needs a quiet
- 25:17place where he can breathe, get his
- 25:19life back together and clean up after
- 25:21drinking. So he asks his grandmother if
- 25:23it is possible for him to move in with
- 25:25her in Mallacuta, which is a much
- 25:26quieter place when compared to the
- 25:28chaotic atmosphere and the frenzy of
- 25:30Melbourne city life. Janette, without a
- 25:32doubt, supports her from the start,
- 25:34lets her know that it's not a problem
- 25:36and that she can lean on her for as
- 25:37long as she wants, but she also gives
- 25:39her another piece of advice, advice
- 25:41that in this case would have tormented
- 25:43her forever. She tells her that the
- 25:45solution is not to run away from
- 25:46problems, but to face them. She must
- 25:49first return to Melbourne, quit her job
- 25:51properly and have a face-to-face talk
- 25:53with Anthony in order to end this
- 25:55affair once and for all and as adults.
- 25:58Fibi obviously takes her grandmother's
- 26:00advice, but decides to stay with her
- 26:02for a few days anyway and during those
- 26:03days she works hard to put down some
- 26:05roots there, she goes to a few job
- 26:07interviews, and even manages to get a
- 26:09job for the season. In short, it is
- 26:11quite clear that her intention is to
- 26:13leave, to change her entire life, and
- 26:14to start all over again from the very
- 26:16beginning. And in fact, this denotes a
- 26:18desire to live, a desire to move
- 26:20forward, to improve one's condition,
- 26:22and to feel much better overall. Okay?
- 26:25During those days, Fibi also shows up
- 26:26at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings
- 26:28because she is truly convinced that she
- 26:29wants to stop drinking. Janette notices
- 26:32how her granddaughter is more serene
- 26:33during those days, but she also notices
- 26:36something else, something that really
- 26:37doesn't give her peace, namely her
- 26:39phone ringing continuously. Ever since
- 26:41Fibi arrived in Mallacuta, Anthony has
- 26:43been calling her obsessively and on the
- 26:46third day Fibi decides to answer the
- 26:48phone and talk to her. At the end of
- 26:50the call she speaks to her grandmother
- 26:52and tells her something that makes her
- 26:53feel really bad, namely that she wants
- 26:55to give Anthony another chance, she
- 26:56explains to her that they talked, they
- 26:58cleared things up and he only asked her
- 27:00to cut back on her drinking. And so the
- 27:02next day she returns to Melbourne and
- 27:04goes back to her everyday life. She
- 27:07goes back to a job she doesn't like, to
- 27:09an apartment she doesn't feel is hers,
- 27:10to a life that doesn't belong to her
- 27:12and in fact it doesn't take long before
- 27:14Fibi falls back into a spiral of
- 27:15depression. Fast forward to
- 27:22mid-November, one evening she and
- 27:23Anthony go to dinner with a couple of
- 27:25friends, Linda and Arch Cohen, and
- 27:27during the dinner they argue. After
- 27:29dinner, Anthony tells Fibi that he
- 27:31wants to go home right away, but she
- 27:32tells him she doesn't want to. Instead,
- 27:34she wants to stay at her friends Linda
- 27:35and Arch's house, so she does. That
- 27:37evening, Fibi opens up a lot to Linda:
- 27:39she confesses that she has tried every
- 27:40drug, except heroin, that she
- 27:42occasionally uses cocaine and marijuana
- 27:43, and that alcohol makes her feel
- 27:45depressed. She confesses all these
- 27:47things, and Linda, during that
- 27:48conversation, understands how bad her
- 27:50friend really is; she really
- 27:51understands her discomfort, for the
- 27:53first time. But Fibi also tells her
- 27:54something else that evening. She tells
- 27:56her that she wants to go back to her
- 27:57original plan, which was to leave
- 27:58Anthony, move in with her grandmother,
- 28:00and start a new life from scratch.
- 28:01Linda listens to her and encourages her
- 28:03in this. She tells her that leaving a
- 28:04relationship like that is the right
- 28:06thing to do, that it is not easy, but
- 28:07it is necessary for her and her
- 28:09well-being. She even offers to help her
- 28:11pack her suitcases and to accompany her
- 28:13to the train station, or to assist with
- 28:14anything else she might have possibly
- 28:16needed. And the next day, November 18th
- 28:18, Linda accompanies Fibi to Anthony's
- 28:20apartment. The two of them actually
- 28:22pack their bags together and then leave
- 28:24. Fibi spends the night at her mother's
- 28:26house and the next day goes back to
- 28:28Linda's, but that same evening Anthony
- 28:30calls her, the two of them talk and she
- 28:32goes back to him. Yes, guys,
- 28:33unfortunately, toxic relationships work
- 28:35just like that. So Fibi brings her
- 28:37things back to Anthony's again, but
- 28:39from that moment on it is a constant
- 28:40push and pull, a never-ending cycle of
- 28:42fighting that leads nowhere at all.
- 28:44Anthony doesn't take the time to notice
- 28:45Phi's difficulties and doesn't seem to
- 28:47have the right empathy to pick up on
- 28:48her signs of discomfort. And this is,
- 28:50in fact, one of the most difficult
- 28:51aspects of toxic relationships for one
- 28:52to understand. The continuous
- 28:54alternation of crises and
- 28:55reconciliations, but when you're in it
- 28:56up to your neck it's really hard to
- 28:58realize it and fight to get away for
- 28:59your own good. And so we arrive at
- 29:01November 29th, it's a Monday. That
- 29:03morning, Fibi woke up and met up with
- 29:05her father, Len, for breakfast and to
- 29:06discuss the party for her birthday,
- 29:08Len's birthday, which was taking place
- 29:09that Wednesday. Fibi immediately told
- 29:12her father that unfortunately she and
- 29:14Anthony couldn't be there because they
- 29:15had found tickets for the U2 concert
- 29:17and that it was an unmissable event.
- 29:19She reassured him by telling him that
- 29:21the next day they would go to dinner
- 29:22together and make up for lost time.
- 29:25After breakfast, Pibi went to her
- 29:26psychologist, and the session proved to
- 29:28be especially intense because Joanna,
- 29:30the therapist, would later state that
- 29:32Fibi’s mood was very low,
- 29:33particularly low, even lower than it
- 29:35usually was. Keep these words in mind
- 29:38because they would have a significant
- 29:39impact on everything that happened from
- 29:41that moment on. Follow me carefully.
- 29:43After the psychologist's visit, Pibi
- 29:45had coffee with her former employer,
- 29:47the one at the beauty salon where she
- 29:49worked when she met Anthony, and then
- 29:51returned to the apartment. That evening
- 29:53, she and Anthony had dinner, and
- 29:54before leaving, they had yet another
- 29:56argument, in which Anthony told Fibi
- 29:57that he didn't want to see her drink.
- 29:59She tells him she won't come, but then
- 30:01when they are there she drinks more
- 30:02than expected and starts talking to
- 30:04some of the people there. On this
- 30:05occasion she opens up, tells of her
- 30:07illness, tells of how for years she has
- 30:09felt depressed about the fact that she
- 30:11suffers from depression, something that
- 30:13Anthony doesn't like at all, so much so
- 30:15that he tries to silence her the whole
- 30:16time, perhaps because he is even
- 30:18embarrassed by her behavior. Without
- 30:21understanding, however, that behind
- 30:22this behavior there was a terrible
- 30:24malaise and in the end Anthony,
- 30:26overcome with anger, decides to
- 30:27interrupt dinner and go home with Fibi.
- 30:30But as we can easily imagine, the mood
- 30:31once back home is certainly not the
- 30:32best at all. Fibi locks herself in a
- 30:34room and starts making a round of calls
- 30:35. First she calls Linda and asks her if
- 30:37she can stay with her for the night,
- 30:39but Linda tells her that the next day
- 30:40she has to get up early and therefore
- 30:42she won't be able to stay up late to
- 30:43talk. And from that moment on a series
- 30:45of events begin to happen that will
- 30:47unfortunately lead to the tragedy of
- 30:49this story. The following day, Phi is
- 30:52unable to go to work, so during the
- 30:54morning she makes a call to the Crisis
- 30:55Center at Alfred Hospital, which is a
- 30:57facility for psychiatric emergencies,
- 30:58and subsequently she contacts her
- 31:00psychologist to ask if it is possible
- 31:01for them to have a session on that very
- 31:03same day. Johan, however, doesn't have
- 31:05a slot available that day, so they talk
- 31:06on the phone for about half an hour.
- 31:08During this phone call, Pibi's sense of
- 31:09distress becomes quite evident, as does
- 31:11her clear intention to bring an end to
- 31:12the current relationship. After the
- 31:14phone call, Pibi makes several
- 31:15impulsive choices. For example, she
- 31:17writes to a boy who had been a part of
- 31:18her past and asks him if they could
- 31:19meet up for a cup of coffee together.
- 31:20The two do indeed meet, and she opens
- 31:23up to him about her entire situation.
- 31:25Then she asks him to go and buy some
- 31:26drugs, and that is what they do. It
- 31:28seems that Fibi took an anxiety
- 31:29disorder that day. Anyway, they head
- 31:31over to his place to keep on chatting,
- 31:33but here Fibi starts having such
- 31:34evident mood swings that it reminded me
- 31:36a little of that movie, Obsession. A
- 31:38bad comparison to make. You know the
- 31:40mood swings that the protagonist has.
- 31:43It is possible that Febby at that
- 31:44moment, besides feeling sad, also felt
- 31:46frustrated and angry because she was
- 31:47unable to put her life in order in the
- 31:49way that she had truly desired to do.
- 31:51On this occasion she also reacted
- 31:53aggressively and it seems that she
- 31:54starts to become physically violent, so
- 31:56much so that her friend has to hold her
- 31:57back to prevent them from hurting each
- 31:59other. Remember this episode too
- 32:01because it will come back later. This
- 32:04boy, therefore, decides to take her
- 32:05back to his apartment, where Phibi
- 32:07continues to be high and aggressive and
- 32:08around 9:00 pm she asks him to leave
- 32:10her somewhere. Fibi then gets out of
- 32:13the car, but we know that she will not
- 32:14return to the apartment until midnight,
- 32:163 hours later. The next morning is
- 32:18Wednesday, December 1st. Anthony wakes
- 32:20up and sees Fibi still in bed. He
- 32:21decides to let her continue sleeping,
- 32:23and then he heads out to go to work.
- 32:25When he leaves, however, he takes with
- 32:27him two things that he usually never
- 32:28takes, namely Phibi's iPhone and a box
- 32:30of Steelnox, the sleeping pills
- 32:32prescribed to him. Anthony will later
- 32:35claim that he took Phibi's iPhone
- 32:36because he noticed it was chipped and
- 32:38wanted to have it repaired. But keep in
- 32:40mind all these actions, keep in mind
- 32:43every little detail. At approximately
- 32:4510:30 that morning, various members of
- 32:47Phibbi's family, including Anthony as
- 32:49well, receive a text message directly
- 32:50from him. Hi family, I'm in bed and I'm
- 32:53going to sleep. When I wake up, I'm
- 32:55going to be the most incredible human
- 32:57being you've ever seen. I'm going to
- 32:58the hospital, it's safe there. And I
- 33:00think today's special is tomato soup.
- 33:02Delicious, nutritious. I love you all,
- 33:05but not enough to send you each a
- 33:06message. Sorry, but it's time to sleep.
- 33:09I have to go happily, happily, happily.
- 33:11Life is just a dream. Exo. Now, it is
- 33:14true that Fibi was struggling with her
- 33:16mental illness and it is true that she
- 33:18had significant mood swings. However,
- 33:20this message is really strange. Natalie
- 33:22, the mother, tries to contact her, but
- 33:24noticing that she was not receiving a
- 33:25response, she decides to contact
- 33:27Anthony to ask him to check if
- 33:28everything is okay. Pay close attention
- 33:30to this part, you need to take notes
- 33:31for this video. Anthony therefore
- 33:32claims he returned to the apartment
- 33:34around noon, in order to check that
- 33:35Fibi was doing well, and according to
- 33:36his version of the events, he would
- 33:38have found her in bed while she was
- 33:39sleeping in total serenity. Fibi then
- 33:41would have woken up because Anthony was
- 33:43making noise inside the apartment, and
- 33:44she would have revealed to him that she
- 33:46had taken two of his sleeping pills,
- 33:48the Stilnox, in an attempt to try to
- 33:49get some sleep. Anthony then makes sure
- 33:51that everything is okay and then tells
- 33:53her that he would be back at work. So,
- 33:55according to Anthony's version, he
- 33:57would have returned home at lunchtime
- 33:58and only then would he have brought the
- 34:00bottles of sleeping pills with him, so
- 34:02only after he had left after lunch. So
- 34:04we arrive at the beginning of the
- 34:06afternoon, and it is precisely at this
- 34:07moment that a very important person for
- 34:09the case enters the scene, a figure who
- 34:11in certain cases always reveals herself
- 34:13as the one who has seen or heard
- 34:14something she shouldn't have seen or
- 34:16heard. The cleaning lady. Anthony, as
- 34:23we were saying, always wanted the house
- 34:24spotless, right? Here is the lady who
- 34:26came to clean his house every week. Her
- 34:28name is Shelly. Shelly arrives that
- 34:30Wednesday at 2:17 p.m. and we know the
- 34:32exact time because she has her own
- 34:34personal key card, which allows her to
- 34:36be independent and to arrive or leave
- 34:38without the presence of Anthony or
- 34:40Phibi. Shelly knows that building and
- 34:41that apartment like the back of her
- 34:43hand. Every Wednesday she goes in there
- 34:45and spends a few hours cleaning,
- 34:46polishing, and fixing every single
- 34:48detail to achieve the result Anthony
- 34:49wants. But that Wednesday, after a
- 34:51short time there cleaning, she realizes
- 34:53she is not alone. In fact, Phibi is
- 34:55home and gets up to keep her company
- 34:57for the entire cleaning time. Shelly is
- 35:00very fond of Fibi, she feels genuine
- 35:02affection for her because she has
- 35:03always been very kind to her. The two
- 35:05then chat a bit. Shelly notices that
- 35:08Fibi, despite her exhaustion, appears
- 35:09quite calm, so at about 5 pm she
- 35:11finishes her cleaning and leaves the
- 35:12house, never suspecting that this would
- 35:14be the very last time she would ever
- 35:16see her. Two and a half hours later, it
- 35:18is nearly 7:00 pm, Anthony returns home
- 35:20from work, and from this moment forward
- 35:22everything we know about that evening
- 35:24comes primarily from his own version of
- 35:26events and his personal testimony.
- 35:28During the evening Fibi calls her
- 35:30father to wish him a happy birthday.
- 35:32Remember, it was his birthday that day,
- 35:34but Fibi had said she would not be able
- 35:35to attend the party, because that same
- 35:37evening she was planning to go to the
- 35:38U2 concert together with Anony. Well,
- 35:40something happens here, however. The
- 35:43first strange thing is that in the end
- 35:45the two of them don't go to that
- 35:46concert and it's really strange because
- 35:47it was Fibia who told her father that
- 35:49she couldn't wait to go, they couldn't
- 35:50miss it. It was a unique opportunity.
- 35:52The two of them stay on the call for
- 35:54about 10 minutes. Fibia is very tired,
- 35:56you can tell by her voice, but she
- 35:58seems quite calm and tells Len that
- 35:59Anthony seemed particularly thoughtful
- 36:01and attentive that evening. He hadn't
- 36:03pointed out anything wrong to her yet,
- 36:05nor had he made her feel guilty. All
- 36:07the details to keep in mind. And so we
- 36:09arrive at the next day. It's Thursday,
- 36:11December 2, 2010. That morning Anthony
- 36:14gets up, like every day, and goes to
- 36:15work, while Fibi stays in bed. That
- 36:17morning something quite unusual happens
- 36:19in the building, as the fire alarm goes
- 36:21off twice, but on both occasions it
- 36:22proves to be a false alarm caused by
- 36:24some workers who are currently
- 36:25performing renovations inside the attic
- 36:27of the residential structure. The first
- 36:28alarm goes off at 11:30 in the morning
- 36:30and the entire building is evacuated
- 36:32immediately. The complex's CCTV footage
- 36:34shows Fibi leaving the building at
- 36:3611:43 a.m. accompanied by his dog,
- 36:37Yoshi. He is wearing large sunglasses,
- 36:39has his black bag over his shoulder,
- 36:41and is holding his dog on a leash. Some
- 36:43individuals who have carefully viewed
- 36:45the footage have claimed that Pibi was
- 36:46swaying as he walked, but this can be
- 36:48mistaken for the fact that he was
- 36:49walking his dog, or perhaps simply
- 36:51because the overall quality of the
- 36:52images was not exactly among the very
- 36:54best. In any case, Fibi re-entered the
- 36:56building at 11:50 a.m., as confirmed by
- 36:58the footage, and stopped in the lobby
- 37:00to chat with the firefighters, then
- 37:02took the elevator back to the 12th
- 37:04floor. We know that he used his Mac
- 37:06shortly afterward. A subsequent
- 37:07analysis of the computer will confirm
- 37:09that Garage Band, the program for
- 37:10recording and creating music, was
- 37:12accessed at 12:01 and again at 12:02,
- 37:13providing clear evidence of his
- 37:15activity at those times. It has also
- 37:17been confirmed that the programs
- 37:19running at that time derived from the
- 37:20computer being used by a person, rather
- 37:22than from automated processes operating
- 37:23within the system. So that means that
- 37:25Pie was actually in the process of
- 37:26using her Mac at that specific moment.
- 37:27At 2:19 p.m., another activity is
- 37:30recorded, but experts believe that this
- 37:32recording is more likely to be related
- 37:34to automated system activity.
- 37:36Furthermore, between 12:02 p.m. Also,
- 37:38between 12:02 and 18:18, no files are
- 37:40being created or modified on the
- 37:41computer. What does this mean? It means
- 37:44that since 12:02 p.m., which marks
- 37:45Phibi's last recorded activity, no one
- 37:47can know what she did or what it is
- 37:48that has happened to her. The afternoon
- 37:52passes, and 6 p.m. arrives, at which
- 37:53time the night porter arrives, a woman
- 37:55named Betul or Ozolup, whom we will
- 37:57call Bet. When Bet arrives at the
- 37:59building, she finds several notes left
- 38:01by the day manager, a man named Enrico
- 38:03Gianmario, with things to do written on
- 38:05them. Among the tasks, Enrico had
- 38:07written to clean the elevator, which
- 38:09was very dirty due to the general
- 38:11traffic of the day, and also to check
- 38:12the building's trash compactor, which
- 38:14had recently been repaired. This
- 38:16information might appear to be
- 38:17irrelevant at first, but it will
- 38:19eventually become the very center of
- 38:20this case. At 6:30 p.m., Bet begins
- 38:22cleaning the lobby and the elevator,
- 38:24then after polishing everything she
- 38:26takes the vacuum cleaner to clean the
- 38:28floors. However, when she tries to turn
- 38:30it on, she realizes it does not work,
- 38:31so she decides to use the broom and the
- 38:33dustpan, which are kept inside the
- 38:35trash room. Bet heads towards the trash
- 38:36room, but when she attempts to open the
- 38:38door, she finds that something is
- 38:39blocking it from the inside of the room
- 38:41. She thinks it's a trash can that has
- 38:43tipped over, so she pushes her shoulder
- 38:45as hard as she can and when the door
- 38:46swings open and the light inside comes
- 38:48on, Bet finds herself in front of a
- 38:49nightmarish scene. There on the ground,
- 38:52among the trash cans, is a lifeless
- 38:54body, a battered body, covered in blood
- 38:56, full of bruises. It is the body of
- 38:58Phiby Hjuk. The authorities are
- 39:10immediately alerted and arrive on the
- 39:12scene, cordoning off the scene. At this
- 39:14point, it's past 7 p.m. and you might
- 39:15be wondering, "Shouldn't Anthony be
- 39:17back by now?" Well, yes, his key card
- 39:19indicates his entry into the building
- 39:21at 6:09 p.m., so he had already arrived
- 39:23by the time that Bet discovered Fibi's
- 39:25lifeless body. But let's take it one
- 39:26step at a time and first figure out
- 39:28what happened to Fibi and how she ended
- 39:30up in that garbage room. In the
- 39:31building, every broken floor is
- 39:32equipped with a type of hatch which,
- 39:34once it has been opened, reveals a
- 39:35chute behind it. A disposal chute where
- 39:37you can deposit your household trash,
- 39:38which then travels directly down into
- 39:40the garbage collection room on the
- 39:41ground floor. So, as soon as the police
- 39:43arrive on the scene, they are able to
- 39:45confirm that Fibi did not enter through
- 39:46the door; instead, she slid down twelve
- 39:48entire floors, subsequently landing
- 39:50directly inside of the room used for
- 39:52garbage disposal. In fact, as we said,
- 39:54her body is devastated. Fibia is
- 39:56covered in blood, has bruises and
- 39:58abrasions, especially on the upper part
- 40:00of her body. And there's an even more
- 40:03macabre detail to this discovery: her
- 40:05right foot is practically amputated,
- 40:06almost completely. This is because at
- 40:09the end of the chute there is a
- 40:11compactor that had recently been
- 40:12repaired and is equipped with a blade
- 40:14that is activated automatically when it
- 40:16detects something large, something that
- 40:17needs to be cut. For example, if
- 40:19someone throws a bulky object, then the
- 40:21blade is activated automatically to
- 40:22shred it. But it is a real shame that,
- 40:24in all probability, the blade had
- 40:26completely severed Fibi's foot. So to
- 40:28give you an initial idea of how the
- 40:30accident happened, according to the
- 40:32very first reconstruction, Fibi fell
- 40:34down this chute. She reportedly fell 12
- 40:36floors, then landed in the middle of
- 40:37the garbage, where she ultimately lost
- 40:39her life. The police wrote this in the
- 40:41first report and in the midst of all
- 40:43this commotion, among curious residents
- 40:45and police officers, Anthony also
- 40:46arrives. He arrives there completely
- 40:48bewildered and asks what the hell is
- 40:50going on, why are all these police
- 40:51officers there. When he arrives in the
- 40:53hall, he makes his way through the
- 40:54people, approaches the spot that was
- 40:56attracting the attention of all those
- 40:57curious onlookers and there he sees
- 40:58Fibi's lifeless body. Seeing such
- 41:00horror, he puts a hand on his chest and
- 41:02collapses to the ground in pain in a
- 41:04scene of utter despair. The police then
- 41:06ask him if he knows this woman, and
- 41:08Anthony, as one would expect, answers
- 41:09them with a yes. He says that she is
- 41:10his girlfriend. The authorities let him
- 41:12know that they need to ask him a few
- 41:14questions and ask if it is possible to
- 41:15move to his apartment, while the
- 41:17forensics team remains on the scene to
- 41:18carry out various checks. But
- 41:20unfortunately this investigation is
- 41:22probably one of the worst disasters in
- 41:24Australian investigative history in
- 41:26recent times. I don't know how else to
- 41:28describe it. A real disaster. First of
- 41:31all, when the authorities and emergency
- 41:33services arrive, a paramedic also
- 41:34arrives on the scene, a woman named
- 41:36Christie Cook who is supposed to be in
- 41:38charge of verifying that the victim is
- 41:40actually dead. The fact is that
- 41:43Christie stated that she tried to go
- 41:44into the trash room as soon as she
- 41:46arrived. This is because she had been
- 41:48taught that this was the protocol. When
- 41:51you arrived at a scene, the first thing
- 41:53you did was check if there was still a
- 41:55pulse in the person you suspected was
- 41:57dead. However, the police who were
- 41:59already there prevented her from
- 42:00entering, or rather, they blocked her
- 42:01precisely because they reported that
- 42:03the victim was already lifeless and
- 42:04therefore had to limit themselves to
- 42:05observing her body from the door.
- 42:07Christie, visibly shaken, remained
- 42:09there on the doorframe observing Fibi's
- 42:11body and immediately thought that there
- 42:13were many ambiguous aspects to that
- 42:14scene, including several cuts on her
- 42:16thigh and shin. These scratches are not
- 42:18exactly consistent with a fall down the
- 42:20garbage disposal chute. Christie also
- 42:21noticed another detail, a detail that
- 42:23you must keep in mind, another one.
- 42:25Today you really should make a notebook
- 42:27with all the notes. When she was found,
- 42:30she was wearing a gray T-shirt and
- 42:32jeans pulled down to her knees that
- 42:33were completely soaked in blood, in
- 42:35addition to the fact that she was
- 42:36barefoot and, as we said, her right
- 42:38foot was practically amputated. Her
- 42:41body was taken away under the shocked
- 42:43gazes of all the residents, officers,
- 42:45paramedics and even Anthony. Anthony
- 42:47does not hide his shock at the moment;
- 42:49he is in fact visibly shaken by the
- 42:51death of Pibi, which was, it must be
- 42:52said, a truly horrific death for him.
- 42:55However, his behavior and the things
- 42:56that will happen during this
- 42:57investigation, which will not even be
- 42:59real investigations, well, it will
- 43:00raise many questions for many people.
- 43:03The police ask him to go up to the
- 43:05apartment with them to ask him some
- 43:07questions and Anthony replies that it's
- 43:08no problem. As soon as the officers
- 43:10enter, they make their way through the
- 43:12rooms and when they get to the kitchen
- 43:13they immediately notice something very
- 43:15out of place. They see broken glass on
- 43:17the floor and blood. I would say that
- 43:19it's not a good impression to give,
- 43:21especially considering the fact that
- 43:23his girlfriend has just been found dead
- 43:25in a way that to call it bizarre would
- 43:27be an understatement, right? The
- 43:29officers then proceed to ask him how he
- 43:31spent the last 24 hours. So Anthony
- 43:34starts to tell his story. He says that
- 43:35he and Pibi were together the night
- 43:37before and that they had planned to go
- 43:39to an O2 concert, but that in the end
- 43:40they preferred to stay home quietly.
- 43:42The first absurd detail is that he
- 43:44claims to have gotten up early the
- 43:45following morning, the same day the
- 43:47discovery was made, to visit the
- 43:48condominium gym before eventually
- 43:49leaving for his place of work at
- 43:51approximately 8:30 in the morning. When
- 43:53the officers asked him where Fibi was
- 43:55at that moment, he replied that he was
- 43:57sleeping soundly in his room with his
- 43:58dog Yoshi. So Anthony was not present
- 44:00at the building at the time the fire
- 44:01alarm went off. In fact, the cameras
- 44:03only show Fibi leaving the building
- 44:05that morning, but from that moment on
- 44:07no one saw or heard from her again for
- 44:08the rest of the day. Anthony told the
- 44:10officers that he returned home from
- 44:12work at about 6:00 p.m., because that
- 44:14evening he and Pibi had planned to have
- 44:16a birthday dinner with Len, who is the
- 44:18father of Pibi. The plan was to meet up
- 44:20around 7:30 p.m. at the Golden Triangle
- 44:22, a restaurant in the area. But when
- 44:24Anthony entered the house he noticed
- 44:26that Fibi was not there. He also
- 44:27immediately noticed the presence of the
- 44:29dog and, among other things, he didn't
- 44:31miss the opportunity to point out to
- 44:32the officers that the dog had destroyed
- 44:34an expensive pillow, but apart from
- 44:35that, there was no trace of Fibi.
- 44:37However, according to his story, all of
- 44:39her belongings were inside the kitchen,
- 44:40which also included her own personal
- 44:42bag and her keys. Which seemed a bit
- 44:43strange to him, he says in his
- 44:45statement, because Pibi usually never
- 44:46left the building without her bag and
- 44:48the fact that her keys were there
- 44:50suggested that she hadn't left the
- 44:51building at all, because then she
- 44:53wouldn't have been able to get back in.
- 44:55Anthony then tells the officers that he
- 44:57had tried to call Fibi several times on
- 44:58her second phone during the day, but
- 45:00without success. He specifies that he
- 45:02called her on her second phone because,
- 45:04if you recall, she had taken her iPhone
- 45:06away the day before to have it repaired
- 45:07. So that is the reason why he
- 45:09emphasizes the fact that he called her
- 45:10on her second phone. A bit too much
- 45:12detail, right? When he then went into
- 45:13the house and noticed that she was not
- 45:15there either, he attempted to call her
- 45:17again, but without any success
- 45:18whatsoever. So for me, this behavior
- 45:19should already seem ambiguous in the
- 45:21eyes of the authorities. I mean, you
- 45:23have a girlfriend who is suffering from
- 45:24depression and going through such a
- 45:26difficult time, she doesn't answer you
- 45:27all day, then you come home and find
- 45:29the apartment empty and broken glass
- 45:30with blood on the floor, but doesn't it
- 45:31even cross your mind that you should be
- 45:33worried? Doesn't it make you panic?
- 45:35Don't you think that something could
- 45:37have happened? Strange, but it's not
- 45:38the strangest thing. You have to fasten
- 45:41your seatbelts, I warn you. And the
- 45:44officers, fortunately, find it strange
- 45:46too. They seem a bit dubious about the
- 45:48story of the windows and ask him what
- 45:49he thinks could have happened. But
- 45:51Anthony seems to already have the
- 45:53answer ready. He tells the police that
- 45:55when he arrived he found a glass
- 45:56resting on the counter, a glass that he
- 45:58thought contained water, but when he
- 46:00sniffed it he noticed that it was vodka
- 46:01. He tells the officers that Fibi was
- 46:03likely drinking, that she dropped a
- 46:05glass on the floor, accidentally cut
- 46:06herself, and that she then proceeded to
- 46:08pour herself another glass. But even if
- 46:10that were the case, then why would Fibi
- 46:12leave broken glass on the floor,
- 46:13especially considering that she had a
- 46:15dog that could have gotten hurt? Many
- 46:17things don't add up right from the
- 46:19start. Now let's imagine that at this
- 46:26point it's almost 7 p.m. and the scene
- 46:28is this: Anthony enters the house, Fibi
- 46:30is not there, there is broken glass on
- 46:32the floor and blood. And what do you
- 46:34think is the first thing Anthony thinks
- 46:37of to do? Order some take-out food.
- 46:39Yeah, weird, right? Also because, let's
- 46:41remember, he and Fibi were having
- 46:42dinner with Len that night. This is
- 46:44where Fibi's father, Len, comes into
- 46:46the picture and gives his version of
- 46:48events, a version that is slightly
- 46:49different from Anthony's. Len says that
- 46:51he tried to call Fibi on his iPhone at
- 46:536:51 p.m. The reason he was calling her
- 46:56was to let her know that he would be a
- 46:58little late. However, the call went
- 46:59unanswered, and no one answered. This
- 47:01is because, in theory, the phone was
- 47:03being repaired. However, when Len spoke
- 47:05to the police officers, he said
- 47:06something quite suspicious: after that
- 47:07call to his daughter, about 5 minutes
- 47:09later, he had received a phone call
- 47:10from Anthony himself. Len replied, and
- 47:12Anthony told him something rather
- 47:13worrying, which was the fact that he
- 47:15was unable to locate Fibi anywhere at
- 47:16the moment. This also crossed my mind
- 47:18just now as being a bit strange,
- 47:19because right after he called Fibi's
- 47:21cell phone, which was theoretically
- 47:23being repaired, Anthony called him as
- 47:24if, in reality, that phone was not
- 47:26actually being repaired at all, but
- 47:28rather, he was the one who had it in
- 47:29his possession. I don't know why,
- 47:31though, I couldn't find any certain
- 47:33information as to whether this damn
- 47:34phone was being repaired or not. So
- 47:36this is a reflection born from the fact
- 47:39that we don't know some information.
- 47:42Okay, let's take it with a grain of
- 47:44salt. In short, during this phone call,
- 47:46Anthony acted a little bit like the one
- 47:47who was worried. He told her that it
- 47:49seemed strange to him that she had left
- 47:51all her things there and that he had no
- 47:52idea where they could be. During this
- 47:54phone call, Len explains that he had an
- 47:55extremely bad feeling for two specific
- 47:57reasons. First of all, Anthony had
- 47:59never called him, and when I say never,
- 48:01I mean never. Usually, it was Natalie
- 48:04who called him every now and then to
- 48:06check on Phibi, but with Len it was not
- 48:08at all usual, in fact it had never
- 48:09happened at all. However, the second
- 48:11thing that struck him as quite odd was
- 48:13the total calmness present in Anthony's
- 48:15voice. Len, on the other hand, was
- 48:17deeply concerned right from the very
- 48:18beginning and even told Anthony that he
- 48:20must call the police to report that she
- 48:22was missing. Considering that Fieby had
- 48:24suffered from depression for years and
- 48:26that he was often unpredictable, Len's
- 48:28proposal seemed more than trivial to me
- 48:29at that moment. But here Anthony's
- 48:32strange behavior resumes, and in
- 48:33response he told Len that it was
- 48:35absolutely not necessary to call the
- 48:37police, also because the authorities
- 48:39become active about 48 hours after a
- 48:41disappearance, and this is not true. I
- 48:44mean, there are cases in which the
- 48:45police take action after 48 hours, but
- 48:47if the missing person is a minor, has
- 48:49psychological or physical problems or
- 48:51there are suspicious behaviors and
- 48:52circumstances, then obviously they
- 48:54intervene immediately. Also because in
- 48:56all these cases, which are special
- 48:58cases, the first 24 hours are crucial,
- 49:00they are the most important. Len says
- 49:02he noticed Anthony's slightly
- 49:04overindulgent attitude and immediately
- 49:05took control of the situation. On the
- 49:07other hand, I can imagine this poor
- 49:09father, who already spent his birthday
- 49:10without his daughter because he had to
- 49:12go to a concert with her boyfriend and
- 49:14in the end they didn't even go. Excuse
- 49:16me for calling him that, I'm imagining
- 49:17things from his point of view, from the
- 49:19father's point of view. Anyway, then
- 49:21the day comes when they can finally
- 49:23meet for this blessed dinner after her
- 49:25birthday and he discovers that his
- 49:26daughter is missing and that her
- 49:28boyfriend is not the least bit worried.
- 49:30I mean, Len's frustration must have
- 49:33been out of this world. It is
- 49:35frustrating for me to recount this, so
- 49:37I cannot imagine how difficult it must
- 49:39have been for him to have to face all
- 49:40these pieces of news and emotions
- 49:42within such a very restricted space of
- 49:43time. In any case, after all of this,
- 49:45he began with a round of phone calls. I
- 49:46first called his son Tom, who is Pibi's
- 49:48brother, in order to ask him if he had
- 49:50any news. Then Natalie, Pibi's mother,
- 49:52who in turn called Janette. However, no
- 49:54one had seen or heard from Pibi in the
- 49:56previous hours, a fact that further
- 49:57reinforced the concern of Len, who also
- 49:59tried to call some of his daughter’s
- 50:01friends, but they all confirmed that
- 50:02they had not seen or heard from her
- 50:03either. At this point, Len tried in
- 50:05some way not to give in to panic and
- 50:07let Anthony know that he would continue
- 50:08getting ready for dinner anyway,
- 50:10telling him that Fibi would surely show
- 50:12up at any moment from one second to the
- 50:13next. At this point, Anthony apparently
- 50:15said a couple of reassuring words to
- 50:16him, but what was it that he ended up
- 50:18doing afterwards? He ordered take-out
- 50:20food. But do you want to know the
- 50:22craziest thing? He ordered dinner from
- 50:25the Golden Triangle, the restaurant
- 50:28they had booked at. I don't know, you
- 50:31can think what you want, okay? But no
- 50:33one can reasonably dispute the fact
- 50:35that these actions are at least quite
- 50:37strange. Okay. And now let's connect to
- 50:39Anthony's statements. He tells the
- 50:41officers that he ordered take-out food,
- 50:43which arrived around 8 p.m. The
- 50:44officers then ask him why he made that
- 50:46decision if Len had let him know that
- 50:47he would be preparing dinner regardless
- 50:49, questioning the reason for his choice
- 50:50under those specific circumstances.
- 50:53Menton vaguely replies that at that
- 50:54point in the evening he was convinced
- 50:55that Fibi was out getting drunk with
- 50:57someone and that she had certainly
- 50:58forgotten about dinner with her father
- 51:00and therefore he had bought food
- 51:01because they clearly weren't going to
- 51:03dinner with her father, since she was
- 51:04out drinking. Then he says that when
- 51:06the rider arrived in front of the
- 51:08apartment, he apologized to him for the
- 51:10food that was probably lukewarm, but
- 51:11explained that he had a hard time
- 51:13getting in because it was full of
- 51:14police and ambulances, so everything
- 51:16was blocked. The rider also added that
- 51:18he had had to leave his bike outside
- 51:19the complex, lock it up and then go up
- 51:21on foot. Anthony continues, stating
- 51:23that the moment the rider delivered the
- 51:25news, he was overcome by a bad feeling,
- 51:26which led him to leave the bag of food
- 51:28on the table so that he could go and
- 51:30check it out. And when they informed
- 51:32him downstairs that the body of a young
- 51:34woman had been discovered, well,
- 51:36Anthony declares that in his heart, he
- 51:39somehow knew that it was Fibi. He knew
- 51:41it even before he saw her. The police
- 51:43listen to Anthony's entire statement
- 51:45and then take a look around the
- 51:46apartment. Aside from the broken glass
- 51:48and blood in the kitchen, the rest of
- 51:49the apartment seems spotless.
- 51:50Everything is tidy and clean. In the
- 51:52bedroom, there are several lit candles,
- 51:54a detail that the investigators point
- 51:56out to Anthony, that is, they ask him
- 51:57if by chance the candles were already
- 51:59lit when he arrived and he says yes. He
- 52:01says that Fibi had a habit of creating
- 52:03a relaxing atmosphere by lighting
- 52:04candles. The officers then continue to
- 52:06inspect the landing, even though
- 52:08inspecting is not exactly the right
- 52:09word to describe the work of these
- 52:11police officers. First, the authorities
- 52:13find blood. And there, more
- 52:15specifically, they discover a
- 52:16bloodstain on the handle of the chute
- 52:17door that subsequently leads down into
- 52:19the waste disposal room. But that's not
- 52:20all. One of the detectives in charge of
- 52:23the case, Detective Garrett Howells,
- 52:25who has already arrived on the scene,
- 52:27also notices something else on the
- 52:29landing. There are several shoe prints
- 52:31leading away from apartment 122, which
- 52:33happens to be the apartment belonging
- 52:35to both Anthony and Pibi. And this is
- 52:36an interesting detail for two reasons.
- 52:39First, the space between the prints was
- 52:41very wide, which suggests that the
- 52:42person was probably running, right?
- 52:45Secondly, the building was cleaned and
- 52:47tidied several times throughout the day
- 52:49, so the fact that these obvious
- 52:51footprints were present at that moment
- 52:52suggests that someone had just run out
- 52:54in a hurry, don't you think? While some
- 52:57officers remain on the 12th floor to
- 52:58carry out the investigation, two other
- 53:00detectives in charge of the case,
- 53:02Detective Justin O'Brian and Detective
- 53:03Andrew Heiley, want to review the
- 53:05footage from the surveillance cameras,
- 53:06which in cases like this could turn out
- 53:08to be a gold mine, right? Then we
- 53:10mentioned that in that building there
- 53:12were cameras active twenty-four hours a
- 53:13day, seven days a week. Perfect, we can
- 53:15finally discover what the hell actually
- 53:17happened. However, when the building
- 53:19manager Enrico Gianmario actually
- 53:20showed the footage of the lobby to the
- 53:22officers, in addition to viewing it at
- 53:24that moment, they did not investigate
- 53:26further, that is, they did not even ask
- 53:27for the hard drive in order to keep the
- 53:29footage. And this is another mistake in
- 53:32this investigation, because Enrico
- 53:34actually explained to the authorities
- 53:36that the footage was saved for only 48
- 53:38hours before being deleted, so it was
- 53:40necessary to request the hard drive in
- 53:42order to keep it. In addition to this,
- 53:44the authorities did not analyze the
- 53:45fingerprints or the blood found on the
- 53:47door handle on the 12th floor and did
- 53:49not even take Fibi's PCs to analyze it.
- 53:51All these elements lead one to believe
- 53:53that the authorities immediately
- 53:55treated the case as more than an
- 53:57accident, or perhaps as something even
- 53:59more serious, such as a homicide. I
- 54:02think you understood when I said, well,
- 54:04in any case, the authorities will
- 54:05contact Enrico again in this regard and
- 54:08when they contact him to find these
- 54:09blessed footage two days later. And in
- 54:12fact, Enrico will tell them that he was
- 54:14clear about it and that he no longer
- 54:15has the footage from December 2nd. Of
- 54:18the 16 cameras located within the
- 54:19complex, only four still retained
- 54:21recordings from that day; however,
- 54:22these were just random images, like a
- 54:24section of the corridor or the lobby,
- 54:26but nothing that actually showed what
- 54:27was really taking place on the 12th
- 54:29floor. It's crazy that they requested
- 54:32the videos just two days later, knowing
- 54:34that they were automatically deleted
- 54:35after 48 hours. Now let's go back for a
- 54:42moment to the evening of the discovery
- 54:44of the body and then return to the
- 54:45matter of the videos. We left off that
- 54:48some of the detectives were watching
- 54:49the videos, while other investigators
- 54:51were on the 12th floor busy making the
- 54:53checks. In the meantime, Anthony is
- 54:56standing on the doorstep, pacing
- 54:57nervously back and forth, and at that
- 54:59very moment he informs the officers
- 55:00that he needs to make a round of calls
- 55:02to explain what is currently happening.
- 55:04And I would say that nothing strange so
- 55:06far, also because at that moment
- 55:07Anthony is the only person who can and
- 55:09must tell Fibi's family the horrible
- 55:11news. And yet, do you want to know who
- 55:13the first person she calls is? Her
- 55:15mother, a woman named Susan. And she
- 55:18first gives her the terrible news. She
- 55:21can, I mean, I can understand it. Only
- 55:23later does Alen finally call and tell
- 55:25him everything. And we cannot even
- 55:27begin to imagine the pain that Fibi's
- 55:28family was feeling at that very moment.
- 55:30I mean, I imagine Len, for instance,
- 55:32who had pictured himself spending an
- 55:34evening sitting at a restaurant table
- 55:36with his daughter and now has to come
- 55:38to terms with the news of her death. As
- 55:40the terrible news spreads, her maternal
- 55:42grandfather, a man named Lorn Campbell,
- 55:44immediately wants to take charge of the
- 55:46situation. He hasn't told you anything
- 55:49about Fiibi's grandfather yet, but it's
- 55:51time to bring him into the picture
- 55:52because Lorn was a retired police
- 55:54detective. As soon as Lorn hears about
- 55:58his granddaughter's absurd death, he
- 56:00imagines multiple scenarios in his head
- 56:02, but suicide is not one of them. As he
- 56:05himself stated two years later in an
- 56:06official statement, from the very
- 56:08beginning I considered the idea that
- 56:10Pibi took her own life to be highly
- 56:12unlikely under any circumstances and in
- 56:14the unlikely event that she had been
- 56:16determined to kill herself. I believe
- 56:18that she would never have chosen to do
- 56:19such a thing by climbing inside of a
- 56:21garbage disposal chute to get it done.
- 56:22If she had truly decided to end her own
- 56:24life by falling, she would have simply
- 56:25jumped off from the balcony of the
- 56:27apartment to her death. He has spent
- 56:29his entire life studying cases of
- 56:32murder, accidents and even cases where
- 56:34people, and for him that absurd death
- 56:37simply cannot be traced back to a case
- 56:40of, um, sorry, I can't say because
- 56:42unfortunately YouTube has problems with
- 56:45this, um, particular topic. However,
- 56:47when I say, um, you know I'm talking
- 56:49about taking her own life. However,
- 56:51according to the orn, there is
- 56:52something else going on. The man then
- 56:54reached out directly to the department
- 56:56handling his case, but when he asked if
- 56:58they had thoroughly reviewed all the
- 57:00footage and the detectives admitted
- 57:01that they had failed to bring the hard
- 57:03drives along with them, he was
- 57:04completely overcome with rage. He then
- 57:07decided to personally contact Enrico,
- 57:09the manager of the building, to ask him
- 57:10if the hard drive from the footage was
- 57:12still there and he replied that yes, it
- 57:13was in the storage area. However,
- 57:16another twist. It turns out that this
- 57:19hard drive is missing. It had
- 57:22disappeared, it was not there, it had
- 57:24simply vanished. An investigation into
- 57:26the matter was launched and the staff
- 57:28who worked in the building were also
- 57:30questioned, but nothing ever came of it
- 57:32. And another thing, the second phone
- 57:34belonging to Pibi, a Nokia, has also
- 57:36never been recovered. So, excuse all
- 57:38the confusion, but the investigation
- 57:40into this case got off to a very bad
- 57:41start. The context is what I am
- 57:43describing to you and unfortunately my
- 57:45impression from the very beginning was
- 57:47that someone wanted to cover something
- 57:49up. They were hiding crucial evidence
- 57:51for solving this case. Fibi's body was
- 57:53taken for analysis anyway, and the
- 57:55doctor who performed the autopsy was
- 57:57Dr. Matthew Lynch. The autopsy
- 57:59confirmed that Fibi's injuries are
- 58:00entirely consistent and compatible with
- 58:02a fall occurring in a very confined
- 58:03space. In fact, the injuries sustained
- 58:05to his lower body are found to be more
- 58:07extensive when compared to those
- 58:08located on his upper body. Fibi had a
- 58:10fractured right femur and right foot,
- 58:12as you already know. Furthermore, there
- 58:15were no signs of sexual assault. The
- 58:17toxicology report revealed something
- 58:19else. The results, in fact, indicate
- 58:21that his blood alcohol level was 0.16,
- 58:23in addition to revealing the presence
- 58:25of several different medications in his
- 58:27system. Traces of Zolpidem, which is
- 58:29known as Stelnox in Australia, were
- 58:31found, along with the antidepressant he
- 58:33was in the habit of taking, which was
- 58:34Simbalta. In the meantime, the next day
- 58:37, Anthony wrote a post on Facebook to
- 58:39commemorate Fibi's death, and he did so
- 58:41by writing a truly heartbreaking
- 58:42message. In this post, Anthony writes
- 58:45that his partner Fibi was struggling
- 58:47with a terrible depression that
- 58:48unfortunately ended on Thursday.
- 58:52Anthony's sister, Cristina, will also
- 58:53write a post dedicated to Fibi to
- 58:55remember her, also emphasizing how
- 58:56fragile a soul she was. The first few
- 58:59days following her absurd death pass by
- 59:01, and while the family mourns the
- 59:02terrible loss, investigators must work
- 59:04with the medical examiner to understand
- 59:06how she actually ended up in that chute
- 59:08. On December 7th, five days after
- 59:11Fibi’s death, Dr. Lynch went
- 59:12personally to the building to see the
- 59:14garbage chute with his own eyes,
- 59:15wanting to verify that her physical
- 59:16injuries were indeed consistent with
- 59:18such a fall. Let's start from the
- 59:20assumption that it is not known at what
- 59:22time Phi entered that chute. The
- 59:24detectives indeed identify a time gap
- 59:26between 12:02 and 19:11. Dr. Lynch
- 59:29suggests that Phibi entered the chute
- 59:30feet first, a conclusion that he has
- 59:32drawn based on the nature of the
- 59:33injuries that she sustained. The door
- 59:35which provides access to the chute is
- 59:38obviously 54.5 centimeters wide and
- 59:40exactly 30 centimeters in height. It is
- 59:44positioned 1 m above the floor and once
- 59:46opened it has an opening of 20.22 cm.
- 59:50The chute is made of brushed steel and
- 59:51has a diameter of 53 cm, therefore
- 59:53relatively narrow for a person. After
- 59:56analyzing the structure in detail, Dr.
- 59:58Lynch describes the accident as a
- 59:59complex fall and makes a reconstruction
- 1:00:01. According to him, Phiby entered the
- 1:00:04chute feet-first, slid down twelve
- 1:00:06floors, and landed in the waste room
- 1:00:07after the compactor had nearly
- 1:00:09amputated her foot; once she was inside
- 1:00:10that room, she dragged herself along
- 1:00:12the floor while desperately searching
- 1:00:13for a way out. It was very dark, too
- 1:00:16dark to see anything. Investigators, in
- 1:00:19fact, found trails and bloodstains in
- 1:00:21various points of the room, which
- 1:00:22suggests that Phiby was completely
- 1:00:24disoriented also because of the
- 1:00:25darkness. Enrico, in fact, together
- 1:00:27with Protinin Diabet, reports to the
- 1:00:29officers that the waste room has an
- 1:00:30automatic light that turns on whenever
- 1:00:32the door is opened; it is therefore
- 1:00:34almost certain that if the door was
- 1:00:35closed, then the room had no light at
- 1:00:37that specific moment. A detail worth
- 1:00:39highlighting is that Dr. Lynch was
- 1:00:41unable to establish the exact time of
- 1:00:42death, as he could not precisely
- 1:00:44determine how much time would have
- 1:00:46elapsed before Fibi lost consciousness
- 1:00:47and eventually succumbed to the effects
- 1:00:49of hypovolemic shock. The injury to the
- 1:00:52foot, in fact, was too important and at
- 1:00:54that moment Dr. Lynch states that Fibi
- 1:00:56should have kept the bleeding under
- 1:00:57control to avoid dying of blood loss
- 1:00:59within a maximum of 10-15 minutes.
- 1:01:01Although the dynamics that surround
- 1:01:03this accident are still shrouded in
- 1:01:05mystery, it is now the task of the
- 1:01:06coroner to establish whether what took
- 1:01:08place was in actual fact a tragic
- 1:01:10accident or, instead, a case of
- 1:01:11homicide. To establish that it was a
- 1:01:14morynch, one must be convinced that
- 1:01:17Fibi performed the act that ended her
- 1:01:19life and that, by doing so, she was
- 1:01:21intentionally seeking to bring about
- 1:01:23that very result. Excuse me for using
- 1:01:26these words, it really offends me too.
- 1:01:27However, there are several elements
- 1:01:29that support the theory of the morynch
- 1:01:31and they are more or less all those
- 1:01:32mentioned so far. Phibi suffered from
- 1:01:34depression since her adolescence, and
- 1:01:36in parallel she had also developed
- 1:01:37issues with alcoholism, in addition to
- 1:01:39abusing various substances and making
- 1:01:41use of antidepressant medications. In a
- 1:01:43statement made to the police, Pibi's
- 1:01:44grandmother, Mrs. Campbell, made
- 1:01:46specific reference to a cut on Pibi's
- 1:01:47well, approximately nine months prior
- 1:01:49to her death. Although she had said
- 1:01:51that at the time she was not trying to
- 1:01:52harm herself and that she had no bad
- 1:01:54intentions towards herself or her life.
- 1:01:56But among the other reasons that would
- 1:01:58push towards the first theory, this one
- 1:02:00here, there is also the famous message
- 1:02:02sent on December 1st, the one sent to
- 1:02:03her family and to Anthony that I want
- 1:02:05to reread to refresh your memory. Hello
- 1:02:07family, I'm in bed, I'm about to fall
- 1:02:09asleep and when I wake up I will
- 1:02:10transform into the most incredible
- 1:02:12human being you've ever seen. I'm going
- 1:02:14to the hospital, it's safer there and I
- 1:02:16heard that tonight's special is tomato
- 1:02:18soup, delicious, nutritious. I love you
- 1:02:20all very much, but not enough to send
- 1:02:22you each a message. Excuse me, but it's
- 1:02:23time to sleep. I have to go happily,
- 1:02:26happily, happily. Life is just a dream.
- 1:02:28If we analyze this situation as a whole
- 1:02:30, we will be led to think that Fibi was
- 1:02:33really intent on ending it all. In
- 1:02:35short, however, we are aware that many
- 1:02:36contradictions are emerging with regard
- 1:02:38to all of this. First of all, we know
- 1:02:39that in all probability it was not
- 1:02:41Fibia who wrote that message. Several
- 1:02:43witnesses, in fact, state that Anthony
- 1:02:45was already in possession of Pibi's
- 1:02:47iPhone when he was sent, since he had
- 1:02:49brought it with him to have it repaired
- 1:02:50. In addition to this, as the evidence
- 1:02:53is gradually processed and put to the
- 1:02:55test during cross-examination, it has
- 1:02:56emerged that Pibi had recently
- 1:02:58repeatedly expressed his desire to
- 1:02:59travel to India and clean up his
- 1:03:00alcoholism. In addition to the fact
- 1:03:03that he was considering some evening
- 1:03:05courses with the aim of undertaking
- 1:03:06studies in the field of creative arts,
- 1:03:08he also had the idea of moving in with
- 1:03:09his grandmother and, last but not least
- 1:03:11, he had a birthday dinner with his
- 1:03:12father on the evening of December 2,
- 1:03:14and this was very important to her. His
- 1:03:17psychologist, Mrs. Young, was
- 1:03:18questioned at length in the days that
- 1:03:19followed; naturally, having been his
- 1:03:21therapist throughout recent years, it
- 1:03:22was of the utmost importance that we
- 1:03:24learned her perspective regarding the
- 1:03:25entire situation. Well, Mrs. Young will
- 1:03:28speak at length with the officers and
- 1:03:30will always state that in her opinion
- 1:03:32Pibi had no intention of ending it all.
- 1:03:35She suffered from depression, of course
- 1:03:36, but it was a depression that was
- 1:03:38mostly fueled by her difficult
- 1:03:39relationship situation and her alcohol
- 1:03:41abuse. Even her primary care physician,
- 1:03:43who will provide all of her medical
- 1:03:44records to the detectives, confirms
- 1:03:46that Fibi was determined to get her
- 1:03:48life back on track and was very
- 1:03:49responsive in trying to feel better.
- 1:03:51But then, guys, she had gone to some
- 1:03:53job interviews to work in her
- 1:03:54grandmother's hometown. She wanted to
- 1:03:56start over, and friends and family
- 1:03:58confirm the same thing. They state that
- 1:04:00Fibi had been having several relapses
- 1:04:02in the last period, but they also all
- 1:04:03agree on the same view, that is, that
- 1:04:05the malaise was mostly fueled by her
- 1:04:07turbulent relationship with Anthony and
- 1:04:09the difficulties she was encountering
- 1:04:11in other areas of her life. Everyone
- 1:04:13around her expressed shock and
- 1:04:14disbelief when faced with the idea that
- 1:04:16she had taken her own life. There is
- 1:04:18also a detail that I have thought about
- 1:04:20, to which I would like to draw your
- 1:04:21attention: namely, the fact that Fi was
- 1:04:23a very passionate writer. In fact, she
- 1:04:25kept a diary in which she would write
- 1:04:26anything and everything at any time; In
- 1:04:28this diary, no note or phrase
- 1:04:30expressing the will of Mh was found,
- 1:04:31nor was any message from God discovered
- 1:04:33; there was not even a single thought
- 1:04:35or any hint suggesting she had reached
- 1:04:36this extreme decision, which is
- 1:04:38something that is not at all usual to
- 1:04:39encounter in these specific types of
- 1:04:41situations. So we arrive at Wednesday,
- 1:04:48December 8, the day on which the
- 1:04:50homicide squad, in charge of
- 1:04:51investigating Fibi's death, classified
- 1:04:53the case as Mh. The family reacted very
- 1:04:56badly to this news and could not find
- 1:04:58peace. And this is where Pibi's
- 1:04:59grandfather, Laurn Campbell, whom we
- 1:05:01have already mentioned, comes into
- 1:05:03action and begins to conduct his
- 1:05:04private investigations. He is convinced
- 1:05:06that there is a third party involvement
- 1:05:08in his granddaughter's death and this
- 1:05:10theory is supported by multiple
- 1:05:11elements. Several bruises were found on
- 1:05:14Fibi's body and there was broken glass
- 1:05:15and blood in the apartment:
- 1:05:16circumstances that have never been
- 1:05:18fully clarified. But also the
- 1:05:20mysteriously disappeared video camera
- 1:05:21footage and, another important detail,
- 1:05:23the uncertainty about whether the front
- 1:05:25door of the apartment was locked or
- 1:05:27open when Anthony returned home on the
- 1:05:29evening of December 2. In short,
- 1:05:31according to him and not only him, it
- 1:05:32is too early to close the case. There
- 1:05:35is definitely something wrong. The
- 1:05:36issue of the bruises has opened up
- 1:05:38another big debate. Dr. Lynch himself
- 1:05:41was unable to determine the age of the
- 1:05:43bruises based on their color, but he
- 1:05:45was able to state that those hematomas
- 1:05:47indicated, and I quote, "some form of
- 1:05:49compression", but I would be cautious
- 1:05:51about attributing them specifically,
- 1:05:53for example, to the application of a
- 1:05:54hand to the neck. One possible
- 1:05:57explanation would be the application of
- 1:05:58a hand, but there could also be other
- 1:06:00ways in which he could have suffered
- 1:06:02injuries. This statement got me
- 1:06:03thinking, because the doctor says he
- 1:06:04would be cautious about attributing
- 1:06:06those marks to the application of a
- 1:06:07hand to the neck; but then he does not
- 1:06:09explain what else they could have been
- 1:06:10due to and does not rule out that
- 1:06:12possibility either. So you might be led
- 1:06:13to believe that the marks were caused
- 1:06:15by exactly that: the pressure of a
- 1:06:16human hand upon her neck. And if you
- 1:06:18remember, a few days earlier, Phibi had
- 1:06:20met with a guy from her past with whom
- 1:06:22she had taken exasperation and after he
- 1:06:23had rejected her advances she began to
- 1:06:25be physically violent, so much so that
- 1:06:27his friend had to physically restrain
- 1:06:28her. Well, clearly this friend was
- 1:06:30questioned by the authorities to
- 1:06:32determine if, during this episode, he
- 1:06:33had exerted a certain amount of
- 1:06:35pressure upon her in order to stop her.
- 1:06:36He categorically denied having put his
- 1:06:38hands on her neck, or in any case
- 1:06:39having exerted such a degree of force
- 1:06:40as to leave behind those very obvious
- 1:06:42bruises that were observed. So how is
- 1:06:44it possible that Fibi had those marks?
- 1:06:46Lorn, with his decades of experience in
- 1:06:47cases of this type, intends to conduct
- 1:06:49his own investigations in parallel,
- 1:06:51hoping to shed some light on a few
- 1:06:52remaining points. The first point that
- 1:06:54he really can't accept is the blood
- 1:06:56alcohol level found after the
- 1:06:57toxicology tests. Everyone close to
- 1:06:59Fibi knew very well that after a couple
- 1:07:00of drinks she was already drunk. This
- 1:07:02was well known. Despite having been
- 1:07:03drinking since adolescence, Fibi
- 1:07:05paradoxically had a poor tolerance for
- 1:07:06alcohol. Her alcoholism was marked by
- 1:07:08long periods of complete sobriety and
- 1:07:10then periods in which she would start
- 1:07:11drinking again, but this meant that her
- 1:07:13tolerance for the substance was
- 1:07:15generally low. So with all that alcohol
- 1:07:18in her system, how could she have
- 1:07:19managed to climb up the door which I
- 1:07:21recall was a full meter high on the
- 1:07:23wall, and get in from the foot end,
- 1:07:25then enter feet first and finally slide
- 1:07:27her entire body all the way into that
- 1:07:30small space? Fibi was known for
- 1:07:32becoming clumsy and uncoordinated when
- 1:07:33she drank, so the very idea that she
- 1:07:35might have been able to do all of this
- 1:07:37is simply out of the question. But the
- 1:07:39orno remains stunned even when he
- 1:07:40discovers that on the door handle no
- 1:07:42fingerprints had been detected, not
- 1:07:43even a single one. And this is strange
- 1:07:45for an object that tends to be used
- 1:07:47several times during the day by
- 1:07:48multiple people. It makes no sense that
- 1:07:50it doesn't have a single fingerprint.
- 1:07:51Conversely, one would have expected to
- 1:07:53find the fingerprints of all the
- 1:07:54tenants who had used the door at some
- 1:07:55point throughout the course of the day.
- 1:07:57Someone may have cleaned it, but
- 1:07:58certainly not Phibi. And since Lorn
- 1:08:00just can't seem to find peace, he
- 1:08:02decides to conduct his own
- 1:08:03investigation. He goes to the building
- 1:08:05in person with an assistant and gets
- 1:08:07help from a friend of Fibi's. This girl
- 1:08:09had more or less the same physical
- 1:08:10build as his niece, and this is
- 1:08:12important for understanding how she
- 1:08:13managed to get in there. The result of
- 1:08:15the experiment is the following. It
- 1:08:17soon becomes clear that it is very
- 1:08:19difficult, if not almost impossible, to
- 1:08:22get into the slide feet first by
- 1:08:24yourself, especially if you are very
- 1:08:26drunk. The coroner's report, in fact,
- 1:08:28emphasized that Fibera had fallen into
- 1:08:30the slide feet first, remaining upright
- 1:08:31with her arms positioned straight down
- 1:08:33along her sides. But if we consider the
- 1:08:35fact that there were no handholds on
- 1:08:37the wall and that the door was quite
- 1:08:39high, it is hard to imagine that a girl
- 1:08:41with alcohol and sleeping pills in her
- 1:08:43system could have managed to perform
- 1:08:45this move and then with her arms at her
- 1:08:47sides. So she fell in this way, it is
- 1:08:49not all that hard to explain, given
- 1:08:50that even with the reconstructions it
- 1:08:52is still difficult to enter with the
- 1:08:54arms raised in order to make oneself
- 1:08:55slide inside through the door. In short
- 1:08:57, if we abandon for a second the idea
- 1:08:59that she did it all intentionally by
- 1:09:01herself, many things do not add up.
- 1:09:03Someone might have grabbed Fibi by
- 1:09:04force and pushed her into the chute,
- 1:09:06which would explain the numerous marks
- 1:09:08that are currently visible on her body.
- 1:09:09The experiment concludes that the
- 1:09:11presence of another person or persons
- 1:09:13would have explained how Pibi got in
- 1:09:15there, as well as explaining the marks
- 1:09:17on her body. However, despite the
- 1:09:19presence of clear evidence that this
- 1:09:21death cannot be attributed to either an
- 1:09:23accident or a mien officially
- 1:09:25classified as a complex accident or m
- 1:09:26l'orn, it remains the case that the
- 1:09:28grandfather will later choose to
- 1:09:30provide this statement. Based on the
- 1:09:33evidence available and my personal
- 1:09:34knowledge of Pibi's character, it is my
- 1:09:36firm opinion that her death was not a
- 1:09:38case of suicide, accident or
- 1:09:39misadventure, but that she was instead
- 1:09:41killed by one or more people,
- 1:09:43intentionally causing her end. It is a
- 1:09:45very hard blow for Phibi's family, yet
- 1:09:46its members remain unconvinced by this
- 1:09:48specific version of events. His mother
- 1:09:50Natalie, grandmother Janette, father
- 1:09:52Len, and grandfather Lorn are all
- 1:09:54convinced that there was something very
- 1:09:56strange about his death. Moreover, the
- 1:09:57way Anthony has been behaving in the
- 1:09:59days and weeks following Phibi's death
- 1:10:00certainly does not help to make them
- 1:10:02change their minds at all. According to
- 1:10:04some testimonies from people close to
- 1:10:05Anthony, including a friend named
- 1:10:07Vanessa, everyone's impression was that
- 1:10:08after the loss of his girlfriend he
- 1:10:10only seemed to be unwell when he was in
- 1:10:11the presence of many people. During
- 1:10:14those moments he would enter despair
- 1:10:16mode, closing himself off entirely, and
- 1:10:17he would literally sit in a corner to
- 1:10:19weep by himself. However, during the
- 1:10:21moments in which he was alone with
- 1:10:23another person, such as when he was
- 1:10:24alone with his friend Vanessa, he did
- 1:10:26not seem at all troubled by the
- 1:10:27terrible loss that he had suffered
- 1:10:28regarding his girlfriend. He would
- 1:10:30answer emails, answer calls, walk
- 1:10:32around the house calmly, and he didn't
- 1:10:34seem upset. Furthermore, it appears
- 1:10:35that in the period immediately
- 1:10:37following the death, Anthony even
- 1:10:38refused to meet with Phi’s family
- 1:10:40members because he was far too
- 1:10:41distraught by everything that had
- 1:10:42actually occurred. His mother Natalie,
- 1:10:44who has released many statements to
- 1:10:46keep the case in the spotlight, has not
- 1:10:48for a single second hidden the fact
- 1:10:49that, to her, the entirety of
- 1:10:51Anthony’s behavior seemed to be
- 1:10:52extremely strange. Also because, if he
- 1:10:54is so devastated by the death of Pibi,
- 1:10:56what should his parents, and in general
- 1:10:57the entire family, be expected to say
- 1:10:59about it? Anthony was her boyfriend, of
- 1:11:00course, but they had been together for
- 1:11:02less than 2 years. Fibia had been in
- 1:11:03her life for a relatively short time,
- 1:11:05at least if we compare it to the many
- 1:11:06other relationships that the girl has
- 1:11:08had. Therefore, Natalie's distress is
- 1:11:09legitimate. I think anyone would lose
- 1:11:11their mind in this situation. Imagine,
- 1:11:13your daughter has just lost her life in
- 1:11:15truly unusual conditions. The police do
- 1:11:17not seem to want to investigate the
- 1:11:19incident and her boyfriend, in all this
- 1:11:21, refuses to talk. Simply absurd. But
- 1:11:29it doesn't end there, guys, because in
- 1:11:31addition to Anthony's strange behavior,
- 1:11:33in the period following Fibi's death,
- 1:11:34some of his moves also raise questions.
- 1:11:37For example, just a few days after the
- 1:11:39accident, Anthony finds himself having
- 1:11:41to take care of some bureaucratic
- 1:11:42matters regarding the death. On this
- 1:11:45occasion, he requests what in Australia
- 1:11:46is known as a Superannuation Fund,
- 1:11:48which is essentially similar to our
- 1:11:50pension fund, but in this specific
- 1:11:51instance, Anthony would have claimed it
- 1:11:53as a death benefit. And guess who
- 1:11:56signed many of these documents?
- 1:11:58Anthony's father, George, the famous
- 1:12:00and renowned former judge of the
- 1:12:01Supreme Court of Victoria. Anthony
- 1:12:03eventually receives the grand total of
- 1:12:06$ 113,000. Following this, of course, a
- 1:12:09great many controversies and a formal
- 1:12:10dispute arise as a direct consequence.
- 1:12:12In fact, Fibo's family is shocked by
- 1:12:14what happened. According to some
- 1:12:16unofficial reconstructions, Anthony
- 1:12:17would have returned the money to Fibi's
- 1:12:19family, but this information should be
- 1:12:21taken with a grain of salt because
- 1:12:22there is no official proof that this
- 1:12:24happened. I really don't know. Every
- 1:12:26single detail of this story seems
- 1:12:28extremely suspicious. On December 16th,
- 1:12:32however, Fibi's family held a private
- 1:12:35and modest funeral. Even after the
- 1:12:38funeral, the parents continued to be
- 1:12:39disheartened by what had happened and
- 1:12:41wanted to push the courts to continue
- 1:12:43with the investigation; but,
- 1:12:45unfortunately, every time they tried,
- 1:12:46they were rejected, and the reason
- 1:12:48given was that the coroner had already
- 1:12:50established the cause and manner of
- 1:12:52death: therefore, nothing else could be
- 1:12:54done. And unfortunately, every time
- 1:12:56Fibi's family tried new avenues, looked
- 1:12:58for new lawyers, tried everything, they
- 1:13:00always found themselves with doors
- 1:13:02slammed in their faces. Very sad, isn't
- 1:13:04it? And I would like to remind you once
- 1:13:07again that George Hampell, Anthony's
- 1:13:09father, had been a judge of the Supreme
- 1:13:11Court, while his wife Felicity was a
- 1:13:12judge of the County Court of Victoria,
- 1:13:14the second-tier court of the state of
- 1:13:16Victoria. Coincidence? I'm not saying
- 1:13:18anything, but it's certainly strange
- 1:13:20and makes you think. Anyway, more than
- 1:13:22two years pass, and we thus arrive at
- 1:13:23August of 2013. Despite everything,
- 1:13:25Fibi's family continues to keep the
- 1:13:27attention on the case high,
- 1:13:28periodically attempting once again to
- 1:13:30exert pressure to further investigate
- 1:13:31the death. Eventually, a new
- 1:13:33investigation is indeed opened, but
- 1:13:35Anthony's lawyer enters the scene
- 1:13:36almost immediately, formally opposing
- 1:13:38the decision to reopen the
- 1:13:39investigation into the matter. The
- 1:13:41coroner then reiterates what he had
- 1:13:42already said almost 3 years earlier,
- 1:13:44namely that Fibia's death was an
- 1:13:45accident. The girl was half asleep and
- 1:13:47drunk; she walked over to the counter,
- 1:13:49crawled inside that space, and
- 1:13:50unfortunately, she ended up losing her
- 1:13:51own life. This time, one of the
- 1:13:54detectives who was present that evening
- 1:13:56, Detective Justin O’Brien—who, if
- 1:13:57you recall, had been among the very
- 1:13:59first to arrive—has decided on this
- 1:14:00occasion to come forward and share a
- 1:14:02truly interesting statement regarding
- 1:14:03the specific behavior that Anthony had
- 1:14:05exhibited throughout the course of that
- 1:14:06fateful evening. He remembers certain
- 1:14:09details quite well; he recalls that
- 1:14:11Anthony cried the entire time like a
- 1:14:12child that evening, but despite this,
- 1:14:14he had not seen even one single tear
- 1:14:16run down his face, not one. At the time
- 1:14:18, he hadn't given it much thought, also
- 1:14:20because the way we react to a loss is
- 1:14:22subjective. However, in hindsight and
- 1:14:24given the fact that many doubts had
- 1:14:26emerged about this suspicious death,
- 1:14:27the detective couldn't help but think
- 1:14:29that it was very strange. It had seemed
- 1:14:32to him like a charade, rather than a
- 1:14:34real reaction to a loss. Furthermore,
- 1:14:36when the officers informed him that
- 1:14:37they required a written statement from
- 1:14:39him, it seems Anthony told them that he
- 1:14:41could easily take care of the matter by
- 1:14:42himself without any assistance. He told
- 1:14:45them he would write the statement
- 1:14:47himself, since he was very fast at
- 1:14:48writing, and Detective Brian could not
- 1:14:50help but notice how he had composed
- 1:14:51himself, so to speak, in the very
- 1:14:53moment that he had started to write;
- 1:14:55almost as if, in 2 minutes, he had
- 1:14:56forgotten that his girlfriend had just
- 1:14:58been found in that condition. So,
- 1:15:01starting that very same evening, even
- 1:15:02the police officers present had the
- 1:15:04opportunity to notice that Anthony's
- 1:15:06behavior was, to say the least, quite
- 1:15:08unusual. And here too, I mean, if it's
- 1:15:10just one person saying it, it's fair to
- 1:15:12give them the benefit of the doubt, but
- 1:15:14if there are 5, 10, 15 people saying
- 1:15:15that something is strange, maybe it's
- 1:15:17right to clear up some doubts, right?
- 1:15:19But all of his behavior throughout the
- 1:15:20following days was also quite strange
- 1:15:22indeed. For example, the fact that he
- 1:15:23would only start crying desperately in
- 1:15:25the presence of many people, while he
- 1:15:27was calm in more intimate situations, I
- 1:15:29don't know, as if he wanted to arouse
- 1:15:30passion by playing the role of the
- 1:15:32desperate boyfriend, but only when it
- 1:15:34could actually be useful to him, when
- 1:15:35many people were there to see him. In
- 1:15:37short, let me know what you think. I
- 1:15:39would like to emphasize that Fibi's
- 1:15:41death is currently classified as
- 1:15:43accidental or intentional by Fibi
- 1:15:45herself and no one is suspected or
- 1:15:47found guilty and obviously we are no
- 1:15:49one to challenge the law, but it is
- 1:15:51right to ask questions and to formulate
- 1:15:53theories. For me, it is really hard to
- 1:15:56believe that there isn't something
- 1:15:57going on and that there isn't the hand
- 1:15:58of some powerful person. Further
- 1:16:00lending credence to this theory is an
- 1:16:03event that happened the following year,
- 1:16:05in 2014. Do you remember Cristina,
- 1:16:11Anthony's sister? Well, it appears that
- 1:16:13in 2014 she was caught being involved
- 1:16:15in the running of a major cocaine
- 1:16:16trafficking ring. However, just look at
- 1:16:18this: while any other person facing
- 1:16:20these charges would have received at
- 1:16:21least 30 years, since it was apparently
- 1:16:22a major criminal ring, Cristina instead
- 1:16:24came out of the entire situation
- 1:16:25completely clean. But again, I do not
- 1:16:28want to assert that this was possible
- 1:16:29thanks to the parents, who simply chose
- 1:16:31to sweep even more dust underneath the
- 1:16:33rug once again. I just want to say that
- 1:16:35they all seem like strange coincidences
- 1:16:37to me, all too strange to be
- 1:16:39coincidences perhaps. And now we come
- 1:16:41to the part that shocked me as much as
- 1:16:43everything else. Following the death of
- 1:16:45Pibi, Anthony decides to sell his
- 1:16:46apartment and move to a new home, so he
- 1:16:47continues on calmly with his
- 1:16:48professional business and his life in
- 1:16:50general, moving forward with his days.
- 1:16:51In 2018, he continued to date a girl
- 1:16:53who was much younger than him, for at
- 1:16:54this point Anthony was 50 years old,
- 1:16:56while the young woman he had started
- 1:16:58seeing was 25, which was roughly the
- 1:16:59same age that Phibi had been. This
- 1:17:01girl's name was Bailey Schneider and
- 1:17:03when she started dating Anthony she
- 1:17:05worked as a dental assistant and also
- 1:17:06as a model for the agency Country Girl
- 1:17:08Management. The two began seeing each
- 1:17:10other, but on June 24 of that year
- 1:17:12something happened. Bailey was
- 1:17:13discovered lifeless inside of her
- 1:17:15family home located in Melbourne. The
- 1:17:17circumstances surrounding her death
- 1:17:19immediately seemed very strange. Bailey
- 1:17:21was found with a golden cord that was
- 1:17:23tightened around her neck. However, the
- 1:17:25cord was not attached anywhere. There
- 1:17:28was no point of contact in the house.
- 1:17:30There were no beams and the ceilings
- 1:17:32were very high. But guess what happened
- 1:17:35? Guess what? Melbourne police
- 1:17:38immediately classified this death as a
- 1:17:40m. Bailey's parents, Caveron and Sabine
- 1:17:42Schneider, along with her sister Lilly,
- 1:17:44have never believed that she took her
- 1:17:45own life, and they have now launched a
- 1:17:47fundraising campaign to pay for an
- 1:17:48investigation into the circumstances
- 1:17:50surrounding her death; but to date
- 1:17:51there have been no significant
- 1:17:52developments in either of these two
- 1:17:54cases. Furthermore, if you search the
- 1:17:56articles on the web there are few, in
- 1:17:57the sense that there has been very
- 1:17:58little talk about the story. It has
- 1:18:00made little noise, too little to be a
- 1:18:02story of this kind connected to Pibi's
- 1:18:03story. By the way, I love coincidences
- 1:18:06and I love talking about coincidences,
- 1:18:08but I can be honest. It's hard for me
- 1:18:10to think that this time too it's just a
- 1:18:13coincidence. However, the law has
- 1:18:15decided this way. As promised, I would
- 1:18:21like to dedicate this last space to
- 1:18:23Phibi's mother, Natalie. Remember that
- 1:18:25she will probably watch this video, so
- 1:18:27I invite you again to be kind in the
- 1:18:29comments, but I know you, so I know
- 1:18:30that you are always very careful and I
- 1:18:32don't worry. Anyway, we had the great
- 1:18:34pleasure of getting in touch with
- 1:18:35Natalie, who was incredibly helpful
- 1:18:37from the very beginning and decided to
- 1:18:39answer our questions and speak openly
- 1:18:40with us about her daughter's case. We
- 1:18:42were struck by her sensitivity, but
- 1:18:44also by the determination she shows in
- 1:18:46keeping the memory of the Fibys alive
- 1:18:48and burning bright at all times. We
- 1:18:50wanted to ask her a few questions to
- 1:18:52get her perspective, right? And we want
- 1:18:54to read her answers. Looking back now,
- 1:18:56what hurt you the most about the way
- 1:18:58the whole situation was handled?
- 1:19:01There were several different things
- 1:19:02that hurt me regarding the way in which
- 1:19:04this situation was handled. The first
- 1:19:06was the theory put forward from the
- 1:19:08beginning by Anthy's father that Phiby
- 1:19:11had taken her own life. He and his son
- 1:19:14immediately told the police that she
- 1:19:16was a very disturbed young woman,
- 1:19:17suffering from alcohol and drug
- 1:19:19addiction, and that she had died
- 1:19:21because of the strong influence exerted
- 1:19:23by George Hampel, who is a retired
- 1:19:24judge of the Supreme Court. The police,
- 1:19:27rather than investigating what was in
- 1:19:29every respect a very unusual death,
- 1:19:30were instead subjected to significant
- 1:19:32outside influence. As a general rule,
- 1:19:34if someone’s partner dies under
- 1:19:36suspicious or unusual circumstances,
- 1:19:38that partner is regarded as the primary
- 1:19:40suspect, at least until such time as a
- 1:19:42suitable alibi has been fully
- 1:19:43established. Additionally, the police
- 1:19:46staged a crime scene that prevented the
- 1:19:48paramedics from examining Pibi to see
- 1:19:50if she was still alive when they
- 1:19:51arrived at the scene. She arrived
- 1:19:53almost at the same time as the police.
- 1:19:55It is possible that she was still alive
- 1:19:57, and this usually never happens. The
- 1:20:00police are never allowed to prevent the
- 1:20:02paramedics from checking vital signs.
- 1:20:05It was confirmed in court that the
- 1:20:06paramedics could have easily examined
- 1:20:08Fibi to check for signs of life without
- 1:20:10having to disturb the crime scene in
- 1:20:12any way. In addition to causing us
- 1:20:15immense grief, this also prevented us
- 1:20:17from knowing the time of death which
- 1:20:18would have been crucial to the
- 1:20:19coroner’s inquest and could have led
- 1:20:21to a different outcome. Pibi was not
- 1:20:24pronounced dead until 4:30 a.m. the
- 1:20:26following morning. No one touched her
- 1:20:29body until it was finally placed on a
- 1:20:30stretcher to be carried away many hours
- 1:20:32after the moment she was first
- 1:20:33discovered. Also, when we were called
- 1:20:36to the morgue on Friday morning,
- 1:20:38December 3rd, she had been found at the
- 1:20:40bottom of the garbage chute on Thursday
- 1:20:41, December 2nd at around 7:10 p.m.,
- 1:20:43well, when we were called to identify
- 1:20:45Fibi, we were only allowed to look at
- 1:20:47her through a glass window at a
- 1:20:48distance and not to touch her. Her body
- 1:20:52was covered by a white sheet pulled up
- 1:20:53to her neck, and her face revealed
- 1:20:55signs of bruised cuts as if she had
- 1:20:56been severely beaten by someone else.
- 1:20:59We were rushed through by the officers
- 1:21:01because we were told that an autopsy
- 1:21:03would be performed and that it would
- 1:21:05start in about an hour. The rest of our
- 1:21:08family, her siblings, and her
- 1:21:09grandparents, were also rushed through
- 1:21:11quickly, and none of us were able to
- 1:21:13say a proper goodbye to her. The whole
- 1:21:16situation was surreal and the shock of
- 1:21:18those hours will stay with all of us
- 1:21:20forever. Subsequently, after the wake,
- 1:21:23my husband—Fibi’s father—and I
- 1:21:25were led into a small, windowless room,
- 1:21:27where an employee from the coroner’s
- 1:21:29court proceeded to explain to us the
- 1:21:30necessary steps that would follow
- 1:21:32thereafter. We had not authorized an
- 1:21:35autopsy and when we asked for an
- 1:21:37explanation we were told that it was
- 1:21:38not up to us to decide. The decision
- 1:21:41had in fact already been made by her
- 1:21:43next of kin, who, as we were later told
- 1:21:45, was her de facto partner Anthony
- 1:21:47Hample, with whom she had, however,
- 1:21:49been living for a period of less than
- 1:21:51one year. As it would later be
- 1:21:53discovered, he held total control over
- 1:21:55her remains, and he would subsequently
- 1:21:56refuse to hand over the body to us.
- 1:21:59Following that, Anthony and his family
- 1:22:01hastily arranged a memorial service
- 1:22:03separate from ours, which was held in a
- 1:22:05chapel situated near the location where
- 1:22:06she had resided for the vast majority
- 1:22:08of her life. Our service was attended
- 1:22:12by over 500 people, including family,
- 1:22:14friends, and teachers. They were a
- 1:22:17family who had known Fibi for just
- 1:22:19under 2 years. It was terribly painful
- 1:22:22for us to be controlled by such an
- 1:22:24unjust law and to have to fight to have
- 1:22:26her body handed over so that she could
- 1:22:28be cremated as she would have wished.
- 1:22:31After all these years, what are you
- 1:22:33still hoping for? And what would you
- 1:22:34like to say to the people who are
- 1:22:36listening to Fibi’s story today? I
- 1:22:38still hope that the truth about what
- 1:22:40really happened to Fibi that terrible
- 1:22:42night will finally come to light and
- 1:22:44justice can be served. I would like to
- 1:22:46tell all the people listening to the
- 1:22:48story of Fibi today to pay close
- 1:22:49attention to those specific signs that
- 1:22:51might indicate that a loved one is
- 1:22:53currently involved in a controlling
- 1:22:54relationship. During the early stages,
- 1:22:56control can easily be mistaken for a
- 1:22:58sign of genuine attention or deep care.
- 1:23:01Anthony would almost never leave her by
- 1:23:02herself whenever they were far apart
- 1:23:04from each other. He would call and send
- 1:23:06her messages continuously, keeping
- 1:23:08track of every single move she made and
- 1:23:10everything she did. Phoebe shared
- 1:23:12almost nothing of this behavior with me
- 1:23:14or our family because she was so deeply
- 1:23:16and intensely attached to the
- 1:23:18relationship she was in. This is often
- 1:23:21the case, or deep down she was afraid,
- 1:23:24as is the case with many other women.
- 1:23:28What was Fibi like in everyday life,
- 1:23:30beyond the case itself, what would you
- 1:23:32like people to remember about her as a
- 1:23:33person? Fibi was a sensitive, creative,
- 1:23:37empathetic person with strong
- 1:23:39friendships and unwavering loyalty. She
- 1:23:42loved her family and was very close to
- 1:23:44her siblings, especially her maternal
- 1:23:46grandmother with whom she had formed a
- 1:23:48bond since birth. Like many young
- 1:23:50people, she was struggling to find her
- 1:23:52way in a complex and often cruel world.
- 1:23:55She suffered from social anxiety and
- 1:23:57when things got too tough,
- 1:23:58unfortunately, she would turn to
- 1:24:00alcohol and other substances to get by.
- 1:24:03But when Fibia loved, she did so with
- 1:24:05all her heart and this was often
- 1:24:07painful for her. She had good friends
- 1:24:10and a playful and cheeky sense of humor
- 1:24:13. She was a prolific writer of diaries
- 1:24:15and poems and created much art in her
- 1:24:18short life. She was passionate about
- 1:24:20helping those less fortunate and I am
- 1:24:22sure that if her life had not been cut
- 1:24:24short so early she would have gone on
- 1:24:26to do many good things in the world.
- 1:24:29This is what I truly hope that people
- 1:24:31will remember when they hear these very
- 1:24:33words and read about her. As her mother
- 1:24:36, I often wonder what she would have
- 1:24:38been like in her 40s and I think she
- 1:24:40would have been incredible.
- 1:24:43Now I want to thank Natalie from the
- 1:24:45bottom of my heart for her kindness and
- 1:24:46willingness to answer our emails. as
- 1:24:49well as for her concern in keeping
- 1:24:51Fibi's memory alive. I hope that this
- 1:24:53story can one day have a sort of happy
- 1:24:55ending, if there is one, and that the
- 1:24:57family can finally be healed in peace.
- 1:24:59Let's try to express our solidarity in
- 1:25:00the comments to Natalie, who will most
- 1:25:02likely read them, and let's make her
- 1:25:04understand that she is not alone and
- 1:25:06that her family is not alone. I think
- 1:25:08that helps a lot in these cases. In our
- 1:25:10own small way, we can indeed make a
- 1:25:11difference, I can assure you of that.
- 1:25:13Having said all this, let me know what
- 1:25:15you think about today's case. It's a
- 1:25:18really hard story, I know, but as soon
- 1:25:20as we found out about it and contacted
- 1:25:21Natalie, we thought it would be right
- 1:25:23to continue to remember Fibi and to let
- 1:25:25as many people as possible know about
- 1:25:26her, in the hope that perhaps one day
- 1:25:28things can be clarified and, above all,
- 1:25:30in the hope that events like this-with
- 1:25:32too many unresolved issues, too many
- 1:25:33doubts and too many things that don't
- 1:25:35add up-won't happen again. Having said
- 1:25:37that, thank you very much to you too
- 1:25:39for staying this far. As always, see
- 1:25:42you next Friday with another file. What
- 1:25:45?
