  2. 0:00Can you hear the church bellsing? That's
  3. 0:02because it's wedding season. When I
  4. 0:04moved to Germany and eventually got
  5. 0:06married here, I discovered a few German
  6. 0:08wedding customs that are fun, unusual,
  7. 0:11and even silly.
  8. 0:15[Musik]
  9. 0:22Weddings in Germany often start long
  10. 0:24before the wedding. Of course, bachelor
  11. 0:27and bachelorette parties are big here,
  12. 0:29but many couples also invite friends
  13. 0:31over at the night before the wedding to
  14. 0:32break porcelin. Yep, you heard that
  15. 0:34right. They have a party called a polter
  16. 0:36armed and throw cups and plates and even
  17. 0:40toilets. That's because shards of
  18. 0:42porcelin are thought to bring luck in
  19. 0:44Germany.
  20. 0:46Many Germans get married not just once
  21. 0:48but twice. I mean to the same person.
  22. 0:51That's because a church wedding isn't
  23. 0:53recognized by the state. So all couples
  24. 0:55have to get married first at the civil
  25. 0:57registry office. Those who want to then
  26. 1:00organize a church wedding which
  27. 1:01sometimes takes place many months
  28. 1:05later. Many brides in Germany don't wear
  29. 1:07big elaborate dresses with long ters and
  30. 1:10those who do opt for a veil tend to
  31. 1:12choose ones that go down to their
  32. 1:14fingertips and not the floor. So what do
  33. 1:17most bridal guns look like? Let's visit
  34. 1:19a brid store to find out. Wie sieht das
  35. 1:22typische Brautkleid aus? Ja, typische
  36. 1:24Brautkleid kann ich gleich zeigen. Das
  37. 1:26ist dieses Schitzmodell mit Spitze
  38. 1:29klassische Aller und ist dezent mit
  39. 1:33Spitze mit kleine
  40. 1:37Verzehrung. Gerck briet.
  41. 1:47Welche Traditionen gibt es beim
  42. 1:48Brautstrauß? Also eigentlich ist es so,
  43. 1:50dass der Bräutigam den Brautstrauß
  44. 1:52aussuchen soll, weil das eigentlich
  45. 1:53Glück bringt und Mürte ist eigentlich
  46. 1:56auch so ein kleiner Glücksbringer. Der
  47. 1:57sollte eigentlich immer bei einem
  48. 1:58Brautstrauß dabei sein. Das hier ist
  49. 2:00Mirte. Das ist etwas, was
  50. 2:03immer irgendwie mindestens ein kleines
  51. 2:05bisschen mit verarbeitet werden sollte,
  52. 2:07weil das ja so ein bisschen brauchtum
  53. 2:08ist und eigentlich schön ist, wenn man
  54. 2:10so ein bisschen was von früher mit dabei
  55. 2:12hat.
  56. 2:17German wedding parties don't usually
  57. 2:19include bridesmaids and groomsmen.
  58. 2:21Instead, the bride and groom each choose
  59. 2:23a witness who is usually a sister, a
  60. 2:25brother or a best friend. So what are
  61. 2:28the witnesses expected to do during the
  62. 2:33wedding? Germany. Welche Rolle spielen
  63. 2:36die Trauzeugen? Also, das ist übrigens
  64. 2:38die Frau, die Irina, die demnächst
  65. 2:41heiratet und ja, das Übliche ist es halt
  66. 2:44beim Standesamt dabei sein,
  67. 2:46Taschentücher vorbeibringen,
  68. 2:48unterschreiben und für die Brautleute da
  69. 2:50sein,
  70. 2:55ne? cars for the drive to the reception.
  71. 2:59That way everyone knows who's part of
  72. 3:00the wedding. Besides the fact that all
  73. 3:03the cars on their way to the reception
  74. 3:05also honk their horns as loudly as they
  75. 3:08can. German brides should watch out once
  76. 3:10they get to the reception because they
  77. 3:12might just get kidnapped. That's right.
  78. 3:15Sometimes friends of the couple steal
  79. 3:17the bride quietly and take her to a
  80. 3:19nearby pup. When the groom notices she's
  81. 3:22missing, he has to go out looking for
  82. 3:24her. But once he finds her, he can't
  83. 3:26just take her back to the party. Oh no.
  84. 3:29First he has to fulfill a task like
  85. 3:31paying for the drinks with the pub or
  86. 3:33singing a
  87. 3:35song. Sometimes in Germany, the wedding
  88. 3:37cake isn't cut right after dinner, but
  89. 3:40at the stroke of midnight. Of course,
  90. 3:42it's the first joint task bride and
  91. 3:45groomete how do it later on the road.
  92. 3:51Cakemer. Warum ist es wichtig, wie ihr
  93. 3:54eine Hochzeitstorte angeschnitten wird?
  94. 3:56Also traditionell ist es im deutschen
  95. 3:58Brauch so, wenn das Brautpaar aus der
  96. 4:00Kirche kommt und geht dann zu seiner
  97. 4:02Feier, schneiden sie gemeinsam die
  98. 4:04Hochzeitstorte an. Die Braut nimmt das
  99. 4:06Messer, der Bräutiger legt seine Hand
  100. 4:08auf ihre Hand und dann spielt gemeinsam
  101. 4:10die Torte angeschnitten. Er gibt ihr das
  102. 4:13erste Stück in den Mund als Zeichenhalt
  103. 4:16dafür, dass er für sie sorgen möchte.
  104. 4:19So, aber heutzutage ist es halt auch so,
  105. 4:22viele machen die Hochzeitsorte mittags
  106. 4:24oder um Mitternacht. Das ist ganz
  107. 4:26individuell
  108. 4:34mittlerweile. Literally, married
  109. 4:41people involve diamonds. So, what do
  110. 4:45German wedding bands look like?
  111. 4:49Wie sehen typische Eheringe aus?
  112. 4:51Der typische Trauring hier in
  113. 4:53Deutschland ist der Klassiker in
  114. 4:56unterschiedlichen Formen,
  115. 4:57unterschiedlichen Breiten und wie Sie
  116. 5:00hier sehen in unterschiedlichen Farben
  117. 5:02Weißgold, Gelbgold oder Rosé Gold oder
  118. 5:05auch Platin. Und der kann durch
  119. 5:09unterschiedliche
  120. 5:10Oberflächenbeschaffenheit ein bisschen
  121. 5:11verändert werden. Steinbesatz oder aber
  122. 5:14auch durch den Vorsteck bringen. Also
  123. 5:17relativ schlicht. Ganz schlicht. Ja.
  124. 5:20If you're planning on tying the not
  125. 5:22sometime soon, you now have some German
  126. 5:24traditions you might want to incorporate
  127. 5:26in your own wedding. I'd also love to
  128. 5:28hear about wedding traditions in your
  129. 5:29country. So, leave a comment and tell me
  130. 5:31about them. Thanks for watching. Meet
  131. 5:33the Germans and see you next M.
