8. 0:19she I thought she asked her players know
9. 0:21I was gonna go right back Stacie what

11. 0:28those guys anything like that you don't
12. 0:33want to know the answer to that question
13. 0:37there are times when I leave practice
14. 0:40and I say to myself you know what if I
15. 0:44was one of my players today I'd be
16. 0:46really pissed and if they were honest
17. 0:50they're gonna go home and I'm gonna go
18. 0:51coach Auriemma did a shitty job today
19. 0:53and I would know it and I would feel
20. 0:55that like man you can paid all this
21. 0:59money you got all this responsibility
22. 1:00and you were terrible today like if you
23. 1:03had a real job like I don't think
24. 1:05coaches a real job like if you had a
25. 1:07real job like when I worked in a steel
26. 1:09mill when I drove a truck and if I acted
27. 1:13like that I would have been fired like
28. 1:14two days later so it keeps me feeling
29. 1:19like I'm never good enough unless I'm
30. 1:22perfect we're never good enough unless
31. 1:25we win every game kind of so this allows
32. 1:28you a to live don't get me wrong you
33. 1:30know does only the only thing worse than
34. 1:33then losing is winning every game well I
35. 1:36definitely want to get into that and in
36. 1:38just a second before we do
37. 1:40kalenna must get a Louis if you were
38. 1:42gonna just describe her one or two
39. 1:43sentences what would it be I got a clip

52. 2:13she is she tries to get away with as
53. 2:16many things as she can and it started
54. 2:19the very first day of practice that's me
55. 2:21yeah so I got two things I want to show
56. 2:23you the first one I asked Elena's penis
57. 2:25thank God she could shoot I asked her
58. 2:29what the best lesson she learned from
59. 2:31you was and here's what she said best
60. 2:34thing I've learned from Gino is probably
61. 2:35you really find out you know the
62. 2:38character you have when things are going
63. 2:40wrong and he makes sure that every
64. 2:44single day in practice it's the hardest
65. 2:46thing that you're ever gonna face and if
66. 2:48you can beat him if you can win and
67. 2:50practice you're gonna be able to you
68. 2:52know face anything whether it's on the
69. 2:54court off the court he's definitely
70. 2:57gonna be the hardest person on you but
71. 2:59as soon as you get it right as soon as
72. 3:01you you figure it out he's gonna be the
73. 3:03first person to pat you on the back
74. 3:05thought all right I take back some with
75. 3:14now she's she's an interesting character
76. 3:18because she let our team in minutes
77. 3:23played her freshmen and sophomore year I
78. 3:25had that much belief and heard that she
79. 3:29could blow a game open in 5 minutes
80. 3:32stretch like nobody else could that we
81. 3:34had at the time but man when things
82. 3:39didn't go her way she was not a happy
83. 3:42camper and well I got something for that
84. 3:44there really bothered me
85. 3:46okay sure you're tough on the freshmen
86. 3:47initially and so I said what is the best
87. 3:50Geno story that you have and here's what
88. 3:52she said I remember when I was a
89. 3:56freshman
90. 3:57probably like second day there I wasn't
91. 4:02talking as loud as I should have been
92. 4:04and that's a huge thing in Connecticut
93. 4:06you need to talk constantly throughout
94. 4:08practice and it's not just talking it's
95. 4:10yelling and you're a freshman and you're
96. 4:12like I'm saying ball I'm saying all this
97. 4:15I'm clapping like I'm talking it's not
98. 4:17the same so I was like he's like
99. 4:20cleaning are you gonna talk has anybody
100. 4:22heard her talk and obviously no one's
101. 4:24gonna say yes so I was standing there
102. 4:26like I'm guys I talked and I told him
103. 4:29that mistakenly and he was like you're
104. 4:31not talking you think you're talking
105. 4:32you're the worst teammate in Connecticut
106. 4:35history you're number 23 you don't
107. 4:36deserve to wear that take that number
108. 4:38off your back you should be double zero
109. 4:39you know what triple zero put one on the
110. 4:41front and I just was like oh my gosh
111. 4:45okay I need to talk from then on i
112. 4:48screaming clapping yelling whatever I
113. 4:51had to do to make sure that he heard
114. 4:52that I was talking that's going
115. 5:00yeah I kind of I should go back and use
116. 5:02that again no but here's what she did
117. 5:06like what we have these we have these is
118. 5:12it this saying obviously that that
119. 5:14everybody has this thing that they said
120. 5:16that they say all the time so one of the
121. 5:18things I say all the time is this
122. 5:21there's two reasons why somebody doesn't
123. 5:23do something one they don't know how to
124. 5:26do it okay coach I don't know what
125. 5:29you're talking about
126. 5:30I all right now it's our job to teach
127. 5:32you how to do that once you know how to
128. 5:35do it and you don't do it what do you
129. 5:36think the reason is I just don't feel
130. 5:38like it
131. 5:39give me an give me a third reason I
132. 5:42asked him this all the time give me a
133. 5:44third reason why somebody would not do
134. 5:46something they're supposed to do one I
135. 5:49don't know what we took care of that too
136. 5:51I don't feel like you what's another one
137. 5:55there isn't another one so from now on
138. 5:57why don't you just put a sign on your
139. 5:59forehead when you come to practice coach
140. 6:01today I don't feel like it
141. 6:05so one of the things that happened the
142. 6:08second day of practice was cleaner she
143. 6:10like didn't feel like doing something so
144. 6:13I said okay let's line up then we're
145. 6:16getting ready to go to Europe so it's
146. 6:17August it's not even September October
147. 6:19so we line up and we go like go half
148. 6:22court and back full court and back
149. 6:24whatever I don't forget what it was
150. 6:25ready go so she goes smart she's running
151. 6:31she's looking side to side she's
152. 6:33checking to make sure she's not last
153. 6:35close to last but she's not gonna win
154. 6:38any Sprint's so she's like sixth out of
155. 6:4112 mm and just cruise right back and I
156. 6:45said let me get this right you're the
157. 6:48reason they had the run and you ran the
158. 6:52slowest of anybody on the team line up
159. 6:54and go again
160. 6:55everybody now they go again she runs a
161. 6:58little bit faster I go see you were
162. 7:01holding out on the Sun you're a con
163. 7:03artist line up again so now they go now
164. 7:05I don't have to say another word the
165. 7:07rest of practice cuz every one of her
166. 7:08teammates hates her right now
167. 7:11so my coaching with cleaning was done
168. 7:14for the dead well and so they they have
169. 7:17to survive you initially yeah but then
170. 7:20as they get a little bit older they
171. 7:22start to be the ones that orient the
172. 7:25fresh Brook is that right yeah like the
173. 7:27way I the way I explain it is Chris has
174. 7:31a pretty good understanding of what I
175. 7:32want obviously because we talked about
176. 7:34it a lot and we you know we're kind of
177. 7:36in each other's heads and then our other
178. 7:38assistants shave Marisa so you know
179. 7:41we're kind of a team we're our team
180. 7:43within a team right the four of us so
181. 7:46we're a team
182. 7:47Chris and I are maybe the captains at a
183. 7:50team and then Shane versus so we're a
184. 7:51little bit of a team now our
185. 7:53upperclassmen are seniors in our juniors
186. 7:55they're part of another team and they
187. 7:59know that they're pretty responsible for
188. 8:02a lot of stuff so we spend a lot of time
189. 8:04coaching our seniors in our juniors and
190. 8:07now our younger guys freshman sophomores
191. 8:11they know they're part of a small team
192. 8:13of guys who don't know anything are
193. 8:14gonna get blamed for everything
194. 8:16so all these teams that are operating
195. 8:19under one big umbrella
196. 8:21everything has to trickle down so we
197. 8:24coach Shea Marisa you coached this
198. 8:26upper-class guys coached the younger
199. 8:28guys and then as guys move up they take
200. 8:31their turn coaching the younger guys so
201. 8:34there's no ever there's never a sense of
202. 8:38we don't know what the expectation is
203. 8:39coach no one ever told us yet they do
204. 8:42they tell you everyday from the minute
205. 8:43you step on campus and there's always
206. 8:47someone above you that you feel like
207. 8:48you're accountable to so you won't want
208. 8:51a freshman going I'm accountable to
209. 8:53coach Auriemma that's too far away they
210. 8:57know that there's a junior that's on
211. 8:59there but every day that you're
212. 9:02accountable to that guy right there and
213. 9:04it's very clear I I observed a practice
214. 9:06of yours in March and it was right
215. 9:08before of vicious snowstorm we had to
216. 9:11drive through the night yeah Richmond
217. 9:12and this happened the next day and I
218. 9:15think it speaks perfectly to what you're
219. 9:17talking about this stuff hey man we do
220. 9:19our homework around here
221. 9:20and so this is from the HBO series

224. 9:38carry all your gonna show all your donde

230. 9:59it's been said in the sports that the
231. 10:02very best will always find a way
232. 10:04and in stores Connecticut last week in
233. 10:07the midst of a nor'easter that stranded
234. 10:09their coaching staff at their homes the
235. 10:12UConn Huskies lived up to their name in
236. 10:14unexpectedly literal terms making their
237. 10:19way across campus through wind sleet and
238. 10:22snow to their team facility or once
239. 10:26inside warm and dry
240. 10:28they held a practice on their own baby
241. 10:41don't do that some great day we're gonna
242. 10:44be in and out really quick no coaches so
243. 10:46we really just got to rely on each other
244. 10:48to keep everyone going the right
245. 10:50intensity level it's gonna battle just
246. 10:59being able to be consistently at a
247. 11:01higher level doesn't necessarily matter
248. 11:03if the coaches are here or not we gotta
249. 11:05take care of business either way

253. 11:31action and adrenaline the scorebook
254. 11:37would record an all-time husky record in
255. 11:39a Geno Auriemma design team wide scoring
256. 11:42drill so like is that normal for you
257. 12:09guys well we have a new administration
258. 12:13up at school and hey they tell you that
259. 12:16you know when schools closed they don't
260. 12:18want you driving up there because you
261. 12:20know some liability nonsense something
262. 12:22that we never I mean who doesn't go to
263. 12:25practice just cuz it's known right and
264. 12:27the second thing that's not something I
265. 12:29would want to show recruits guys going
266. 12:32to practice like this I didn't pants no
267. 12:34that's not the winning edge right I
268. 12:37don't think so we told them I said look
269. 12:39guys we can't come up to practice but we
270. 12:43need to get a workout in because we
271. 12:44can't take you know two days in a row
272. 12:46off we got a game Saturday whatever it
273. 12:48was so how old do you guys want to go
274. 12:51you know they said we'll go I say how
275. 12:53about seven o'clock do you guys get it
276. 12:55out of the way cuz snows gonna get even
277. 12:56worse so say y'all right so so I said
278. 12:59you guys you know what we got to do yep
279. 13:02we got it so they came out seven o'clock
280. 13:04put their two hours in and went back and
281. 13:06I felt pretty good about it and I've you
282. 13:10know I didn't even go back and watch the
283. 13:11film either I don't even watch the film
284. 13:13cuz I knew I knew they did what I knew
285. 13:16there would be a lot of stuff that I
286. 13:17would say are you know I'm not happy
287. 13:19about that
288. 13:20that but that looks a little different
289. 13:23than what I saw we're City it better
290. 13:26that's otherwise what do they need us
291. 13:28work you know and we're lucky to you
292. 13:32know like we have a lot of managers you
293. 13:34know we have a lot of people so they
294. 13:35take stats on everything so every shot
295. 13:39every kid takes the entire practice
296. 13:41everything we do it's gets recorded you
297. 13:44know so at the end of the week when I
298. 13:45say somebody this is what happened
299. 13:49welcome I'm not playing because you you
300. 13:53can't make shots
301. 13:54well coach says I can't make shot no I
302. 13:57didn't say anything
303. 13:58you didn't make shots it's written right
304. 14:00here I didn't make any stuff up so we we
305. 14:03record everything and we try to give
306. 14:05them some feedback and they take it upon
307. 14:08themselves to to get better and
308. 14:10hopefully that's the kind of culture
309. 14:12that we've created where you know
310. 14:14they're never satisfied with how good
311. 14:15they are they just want to keep getting
312. 14:16better
