- 0:12uh my name is Taran Stoke to be back
- 0:14with you again uh I'm a dad I'm an
- 0:16author I am a surfer and I'm speaking to
- 0:19you about uh the power differences
- 0:22between men and women in society and we
- 0:26are looking at the subject of a gender
- 0:28stereotypes stereotype if you remember
- 0:32is the Norms the uh pressures that
- 0:35Society puts on men and women to act in
- 0:37a certain way these are
- 0:39expectations and last time we looked at
- 0:42male stereotypes and if we look at men
- 0:45in a certain way uh this leads to toxic
- 0:49masculinity well today in this session
- 0:52we are talking about female stereotypes
- 0:55and especially the way that men see
- 0:58women and if we see women wrong
- 1:00we're going to treat them
- 1:03wrong so so let me paint a picture for
- 1:05you of what I mean by a female
- 1:08stereotypes now your culture might be
- 1:10different but on average there are 10
- 1:13ideas about females that I mean I don't
- 1:16agree with but they are there they're
- 1:17the background noise that shapes our way
- 1:20of thinking about women so let me let me
- 1:22run through some of them even if you
- 1:24don't believe them you'll notice that
- 1:26these things exist in society and kind
- 1:28of impact our way of seeing women so
- 1:31here we go firstly women are followers
- 1:35they should let men lead or women are
- 1:38emotional they should let men think uh
- 1:40they are property they belong to men
- 1:43women are helpless they need to be
- 1:46rescued they are dependents they need to
- 1:49be provided for women are
- 1:52homebound they should clean house they
- 1:54should look after the kids women are sex
- 1:57objects they exist to attract and
- 2:00satisfy men they are non-analytic they
- 2:04don't belong in maths and Science and
- 2:06Tech women are fragile they can't cope
- 2:09under pressure and they're nice they
- 2:13should be quiet and defer to the opinion
- 2:15of men and then if a woman is outspoken
- 2:19and assertive then excuse my language
- 2:22The Stereotype is she's a
- 2:26and when even subconsciously these
- 2:29stereotypes come into our mind what what
- 2:32they do is they cause us to
- 2:34devalue women because because
- 2:36essentially they're all about men seeing
- 2:39women as less than women as inferior
- 2:42because by these stereotypes women exist
- 2:45to satisfy men uh support men belong to
- 2:50men uh you know be led by men but think
- 2:54about how these ways of seeing women how
- 2:57devaluing women causes us to
- 3:00damage
- 3:03women the problem is that in a society
- 3:06that devalues women that's also a
- 3:09society that damages women I mean women
- 3:13are not able to enjoy the relationship
- 3:16they should have when they're in a
- 3:17relationship where the man thinks that
- 3:19he's Superior uh to the woman mind you
- 3:22the man's not enjoying that relationship
- 3:24either um or think about how in a in in
- 3:27in a gender unequal culture women get
- 3:31the bad deal mental health they're far
- 3:34more likely to experience depression uh
- 3:37anxiety uh self-rejection they speak
- 3:41about how they're in a group of men they
- 3:43try talk but the men speak over them the
- 3:46men don't listen well think about in
- 3:48those poor cultures that still practice
- 3:52infanticide the killing of babies a baby
- 3:54girl is far more likely to be killed
- 3:56than a baby boy and mind you in gender
- 4:00unequal cultures when a woman is killed
- 4:03U there's plenty of research to show
- 4:05that newspapers are far less likely to
- 4:07even report it which shows that we
- 4:09actually Place less value on the life of
- 4:13a a woman than we do on a
- 4:17man my point is that in a culture that
- 4:20devalues women we tend to uh treat women
- 4:23really badly and uh this is probably
- 4:26going to be the most intense part of my
- 4:28message to you today and and and I'm
- 4:30going to speak about the way that gender
- 4:33inequality leads to a culture in which
- 4:36we damage women not just emotionally not
- 4:38just limiting their potential we damage
- 4:41them physically and please I'm not
- 4:43blaming you I'm not blaming me I'm
- 4:45speaking about the culture that that we
- 4:47live in that is so destructive to women
- 4:49so let me quote for you the scars
- 4:53Against Humanity the author of this book
- 4:55this is what she says what is it about
- 4:57human societies that tolerates the kind
- 4:59of hatred and violence towards women
- 5:02which is greater than is found even in
- 5:04animal communities what is it about some
- 5:07human cultures uh that that makes it
- 5:11normal for women to undergo and here's
- 5:13the heavy part rape domestic abuse
- 5:17sexual violence and harassment beatings
- 5:21cutting uh
- 5:23molestation
- 5:24infanticide trafficking bride burning
- 5:28child child prostitution
- 5:30and sexual slavery and the author goes
- 5:33on to say that back behind these
- 5:35injustices that are R In some cultures
- 5:39is a lower view of women than of men
