- 0:00in lesson three we will focus on the
- 0:01crucial stage of architectural projects
- 0:04the project brief references and
- 0:05inspiration we will Begin by exploring
- 0:08the client in some detail understanding
- 0:10the client's needs their lifestyle their
- 0:12narrative and additionally we will
- 0:14explore the building's location and
- 0:16context and how this may shape the
- 0:18Project's
- 0:22narrative okay so in this lesson we're
- 0:24going to answer the following questions
- 0:26who is the client what is the client
- 0:28brief what is the location and what is
- 0:30the context around this project and
- 0:32we're also going to do some precedent
- 0:34research we're going to look up on
- 0:36Pinterest and I'm going to create a mood
- 0:37board in rayon and discuss through the
- 0:40the various architectural features and
- 0:42material palette that we're going to
- 0:43explore throughout this project so let's
- 0:45dive into the brief so the client is Mr
- 0:48and Mrs Smith they're a retired couple
- 0:50and the location of the plot is in a
- 0:52coastal Cornwall town called PR Sands so
- 0:56this is set within a natural valley and
- 0:57hilly topography if you're not aware of
- 1:00or familiar with Cornwall Cornwall is
- 1:02absolutely beautiful PR sand is a great
- 1:05kind of holiday destination in the UK uh
- 1:08and they have acquired this plot which
- 1:10is near pands and has beautiful views
- 1:13towards the sea as you can see down here
- 1:15they've got absolutely stunning views
- 1:17over the landscape and Views towards the
- 1:19sea which we're going to utilize in our
- 1:22proposal so the plot is for a retired
- 1:26couple who have worked and lived in
- 1:27London for 30 years so I don't blame
- 1:30them for wanting to move down to cor
- 1:32more somewhere a bit more remote
- 1:33somewhere a bit more quiet out in the
- 1:35countryside I don't blame them I think
- 1:37it's a good idea and the project
- 1:38involves designing a two-story
- 1:40three-bedroom home that integrates
- 1:42seamlessly into the natural landscape
- 1:44respecting the unique topography and
- 1:45panoramic views of the sea as we've
- 1:48discussed they want to explore a
- 1:50contemporary architectural approach uh
- 1:52with reference into Coral's historic
- 1:54architectural Heritage and the material
- 1:56pallet in Cornwall is very much kind of
- 1:59stoned you got barns uh rustic materials
- 2:02and kind of a lot of Timber which I will
- 2:04discuss in a moment but the local
- 2:06vernacular is very much kind of natural
- 2:08stones Timbers cladding and we want to
- 2:11explore those features in the proposal
- 2:12to make sure that we're responding to
- 2:14the local vernacular and we're not
- 2:16designing something that's going to look
- 2:17wildly out out of place we want to make
- 2:20sure that we're responding to the local
- 2:22context uh and the brief is to once
- 2:24again build on those natural features of
- 2:27stone Timber and they want expansive
- 2:29glazing
- 2:30uh to make sure that it's blending into
- 2:32the surroundings it's making the most of
- 2:34those natural views and the natural
- 2:36landscape um but we're also going to
- 2:38obviously apply a bit of a modern
- 2:39contemporary approach uh with the kind
- 2:42of material pette and how we're going to
- 2:44play with the kind of uh the volumes and
- 2:46the geometry and the architectural Lo
- 2:49logic of the scheme the couple have also
- 2:51required they have some room
- 2:53requirements so the first one is a open
- 2:56plan kitchen living and dining 70 square
- 2:58m so that is quite a significant ific
- 3:00area for an open plan space so that
- 3:03would be uh something that we can embed
- 3:06into the design of course they want a
- 3:08utility cupboard they want a garage to
- 3:10store both of their cars they want an
- 3:12office space uh in case they want to do
- 3:14any admin work or uh whatever you do
- 3:18when you're retired obviously want a a
- 3:20toilet a master bedroom which is going
- 3:22to be a sign significant feature of the
- 3:24project an on suite and then obviously
- 3:27they want two bedrooms and a shared
- 3:29bathroom
- 3:30so there're the required uh the kind of
- 3:32room requirements which we'll go into a
- 3:34bit more detail when we come across to
- 3:37the later lessons when we talk about
- 3:38massing and Zoning um but this gives us
- 3:41a good indication of the kind of scale
- 3:42and the size of these spaces and the
- 3:45plot that we're working with some of the
- 3:46local architectural features that I've
- 3:48picked up on here that I wanted to
- 3:49discuss and that I thought were
- 3:51interesting to explore and respond to
- 3:54First obviously the cormel stone which
- 3:56is a very famous material in cormel
- 3:59hence Coral Stone which is a stone that
- 4:02we want to kind of utilize and explore
- 4:05um in our proposal Barnes are very
- 4:07prominent architecture feature in Coral
- 4:11so that is something that we can kind of
- 4:12lean into we can maybe do a kind of more
- 4:15modern interpretation a contemporary
- 4:17interpretation of a barn and then
- 4:19finally there was this little cottage
- 4:20that I found which I thought was really
- 4:22interesting to indicate that there are
- 4:24actually some quite modern designs in
- 4:26the area although we're probably not
- 4:28going to do something as modern as this
- 4:31um but it's interesting to show that uh
- 4:33they've got some some quite cool
- 4:35architecture in PR Sands this very much
- 4:37looks like it should be in grease or
- 4:39something uh with the white concrete
- 4:41it's probably painted stone or something
- 4:44um yeah so there the three kind of local
- 4:47vernaculars um and the next thing we're
- 4:49going to explore are references and
- 4:51we're going to dive into Pinterest very
- 4:53quickly and we're going to put together
- 4:54a mood board discussing these features
- 4:57and materiality that we have discussed
- 4:59in terms of the stone in terms of Timber
- 5:02and see how we can maybe find some
- 5:04examples of of more modern
- 5:07interpretation of Barnes and and how
- 5:09they play with materiality so diving
- 5:11into Pinterest I have pinned some items
- 5:14that I think are useful and relevant and
- 5:17some architecture features that I think
- 5:19we should explore in the design and I'm
- 5:21going to very quickly show you how I can
- 5:23drop this into rayon and start putting
- 5:26together a mood board so in rayon in our
- 5:29canvas I'm going to come over to the
- 5:30left hand side here click the menu tab
- 5:32which is the three lines import image
- 5:35and I'm just going to go over
- 5:37to my precedents select them open and
- 5:42what it's going to do is it's going to
- 5:43drop straight into place and you've got
- 5:46obviously at the top you've got the kind
- 5:48of transform tools uh so we can move it
- 5:52we can drag it over to here obviously we
- 5:54want it to be a bit smaller so we're
- 5:56going to drag that down and one thing
- 5:59you can do is you can double click into
- 6:02the image and you can start cropping it
- 6:03to all kinds of shapes which I think is
- 6:06quite a nice tool um but what I'm going
- 6:08to do is I'm just going to drop a couple
- 6:09images together and I'm going to talk
- 6:12through some of the key architectural
- 6:14features that we want to explore and as
- 6:16I do this you can also see that the
- 6:19snapping tool is activated so you got so
- 6:22you can make a nice mood board where
- 6:25things are snapping to one another okay
- 6:27so now we've dropped some of these
- 6:29images in and we've got a bit of a mood
- 6:31ball going I'm just going to highlight
- 6:34uh with some text so down here at the
- 6:36bottom you can select the text tool I'm
- 6:38just going to start annotating some of
- 6:40these drawings and talking through some
- 6:41of the key features that I think uh
- 6:44would be useful to use and uh reference
- 6:47as we're designing the scheme so with
- 6:49this first one I think it's uh uh the
- 6:52interesting thing here is the very
- 6:53simple geometry um with uh the kind of
- 6:57obviously the pitched roof and you've
- 6:58got the timber contrasting with the
- 7:00stone but also having a kind of similar
- 7:02color palette you've got that warm
- 7:04rustic feel and when you add your text
- 7:07you can click done and as you can see
- 7:09it's coming at one to one so it's coming
- 7:11very small but on this right side we can
- 7:13scale that up to 10
- 7:16mil maybe a bit bigger let's do 20 mil
- 7:19and that will scale the tag up this next
- 7:22one I think is also very similar I think
- 7:25the stone is a little bit too heavy I'm
- 7:27not so sure on the gray um I don't think
- 7:29this would respond very well to the kind
- 7:32of local color and texture of cormal
- 7:36however I like the the horizontal
- 7:38language of the windows and the geometry
- 7:40slicing through the building and you can
- 7:43clearly see here that there are some
- 7:44expansive views slicing through the
- 7:46building with uh lots of glazing and I
- 7:50think this is a really nice way of kind
- 7:52of integrating the design through
- 7:54glazing through openings into the
- 7:56surrounding landscape now this one is
- 7:58kind of similar to the first one in that
- 8:00it's a very simple geometry uh but I
- 8:03think the addition of the Timber slats
- 8:05work really well here because you've got
- 8:07that really nice vertical element and
- 8:09you've got that vertical kind of floor
- 8:11to ceiling window obviously not quite
- 8:13ceiling uh that pokes into the geometry
- 8:16and you've got a really nice effect with
- 8:18the Shadow and with the pitch roof so we
- 8:20like the
- 8:22vertical
- 8:24Timber and even the dark Timber looks
- 8:26quite nice quite like the black
- 8:30we then got this one down here which I
- 8:31think is arguably my favorite in that
- 8:33it's just a really Sleek horizontal
- 8:36element through the lscape it almost
- 8:38looks like it's kind of floating and
- 8:40working with the views of the landscape
- 8:41it's working with the horizontal kind of
- 8:44horizon of the sea and I think it works
- 8:47really well and as you can see here very
- 8:49similar to one the one above they've got
- 8:51windows that are penetrating all the way
- 8:53through the building so you get that
- 8:54feeling of when the doors are open it
- 8:57feels like you are part of that
- 8:58environment and that you're kind of
- 9:00invited into the landscape and then this
- 9:02one here I think is just a case of a
- 9:03really simple MK that I sat on top of
- 9:06one another embedded into the landscape
- 9:08as you can see here this is quite a
- 9:10steep slope down and they're simply just
- 9:13stepping the massing down which I think
- 9:14is just a really successful way of doing
- 9:16it entering the building at one level
- 9:18and making your way down uh the scheme
- 9:20down the property as you go through the
- 9:23building and then finally this one here
- 9:24I think is just a really
- 9:26nice kind of interesting geometry very
- 9:30simple masses that are very clear uh the
- 9:33kind of volumes are very much defined so
- 9:36you very much have this clear language
- 9:38of these kind of volumes that are sat on
- 9:42top of one
- 9:43another so youve almost got these three
- 9:47blocks and I think it's a really nice
- 9:49just simple way of stacking the geometry
- 9:51and creating spaces of closure and
- 9:54openings and having this tiered effect
- 9:56in the elevation and this section at the
- 9:58end here is just very much demonstrating
- 10:00alternative ways of how we can utilize
- 10:02the landscape and work with the
- 10:03landscape this one here very much is
- 10:05embedding the mass into the landscape so
- 10:07it's kind of hidden uh this one is
- 10:10poking out with elements hidden and this
- 10:12bottom one here is showing how you could
- 10:14use maybe some indoor and outdoor
- 10:16features using the landscape as part of
- 10:19the interior and extern external space
- 10:22um and they're just some really useful
- 10:24uh kind of examples of embedding uh the
- 10:27design into the landscape so this is our
- 10:28mood boy picking up on some of the key
- 10:30features uh that I believe are going to
- 10:32be um kind of good references moving
- 10:35forward for the scheme and some of the
- 10:37languages that we want to pick up on in
- 10:39response to the brief obviously
- 10:40responding to the local vernacular of
- 10:42the cormal stone the kind of barn feel
- 10:45of cormal maximizing views over the
- 10:48landscape and this gives us a good basis
- 10:51moving forward now into understanding
- 10:53the site and the site conditions
