  1. 0:00this is your complete beginnner guy the
  2. 0:01complete users guy whatever you want to
  3. 0:03call to the Garin Instinct 3 Series both
  4. 0:05the solar Edition as well as the AMOLED
  5. 0:07Edition I've been using the watch for a
  6. 0:09while now not just myself but also my
  7. 0:11wife putting it through its Paces over
  8. 0:12the course of a whole bunch of different
  9. 0:14sports and activities with that I've got
  10. 0:16a bunch of experience with this watch
  11. 0:17but also with Garmin watches for the
  12. 0:19last like decade and a half or so so I'm
  13. 0:21going to talk through every single
  14. 0:23feature on this watch well the majority
  15. 0:24of the features there's like a thousand
  16. 0:25features on this watch but I'm going to
  17. 0:27talk through how to use this watch from
  18. 0:28start to finish starting off with Which
  19. 0:30models you have kind of your options for
  20. 0:32displays the pros and cons to that
  21. 0:34getting into activity tracking and Sport
  22. 0:36tracking and navigation and all the GPS
  23. 0:38settings some of the training readiness
  24. 0:40features and all the things you need to
  25. 0:42know to use this watch it's as simple as
  26. 0:44that now not this is not my full review
  27. 0:47where I talk about what's good and bad
  28. 0:48that's up in the corner there though I
  29. 0:49will certainly talk about what's good
  30. 0:51and bad but the majority of that good
  31. 0:52and bad thing is in the video up there
  32. 0:54this is more about how to use the watch
  33. 0:56as a guide it should be about 45 minutes
  34. 0:58long we'll see once I'm done recording
  35. 1:00it and it's designed to be a long form
  36. 1:01beginner guide but one quick thing to
  37. 1:03not is this video is sponsored by
  38. 1:04Precision Fuel and hydration more about
  39. 1:06them a little bit later on in the video
  40. 1:08okay with that just simply dive into it
  41. 1:10the very first thing to know is there
  42. 1:11are two display options on the Instinct
  43. 1:133 there's an AMOLED display seen on the
  44. 1:15left and then there's a solar display
  45. 1:17seen on the right right there the solar
  46. 1:19display is a mbased display or a memory
  47. 1:21and pixel display like all past Instinct
  48. 1:23lineups versus the AMOLED display is
  49. 1:26what you might have seen on the new 4965
  50. 1:28or 265 kind of very similar to an Apple
  51. 1:31Watch display in a nutshell AMOLED
  52. 1:32displays are much more brilliant much
  53. 1:34more vibrant have all these colors in
  54. 1:36the case of the mbased display on the
  55. 1:37Instinct it is a black and white
  56. 1:39monochrome display though Garmin does
  57. 1:41have other color mbased displays but not
  58. 1:43in the case of the Instinct with the
  59. 1:45mbased display you're going to get a lot
  60. 1:47longer battery life uh for that and you
  61. 1:49can see the battery chart right here uh
  62. 1:50note also the mbased display has a solar
  63. 1:53panel on top of that all of the Instinct
  64. 1:553 editions with MIP have solar there are
  65. 1:57no non-solar editions of the Instinct 3
  66. 2:00from a myip standpoint versus the AMOLED
  67. 2:03has no solar panel it uh but you know
  68. 2:05what it still gets great battery life
  69. 2:07I've been primarily using the AMOLED
  70. 2:08Edition uh day after day and I'm getting
  71. 2:10like a Solid 5 six days easily on this
  72. 2:13watch and that's with workouts of 1 to 3
  73. 2:164 hours a day uh no problems at all so
  74. 2:18garmin's AMOLED display battery life is
  75. 2:20really really good arguably industry
  76. 2:22leing and it's not really a limiter here
  77. 2:24it's really about what kind of display
  78. 2:26type that you want equally from a
  79. 2:27visibility standpoint the AMOLED
  80. 2:29displays of today not like the ones of
  81. 2:30even just 3 or 4 years ago uh you can
  82. 2:32see these AMOLED displays in all liting
  83. 2:35conditions without any problems at all
  84. 2:36uh gesture base means as soon as you
  85. 2:38turn your wrist like this the emol
  86. 2:39display will go to full brightness and
  87. 2:41you put it back down again and it kind
  88. 2:43of dims out a little bit more so it
  89. 2:44saves some battery likewise at night
  90. 2:46with an AMOLED display it goes into a
  91. 2:48sleep mode uh you can basically just
  92. 2:50press a button there to turn that back
  93. 2:51out that way it doesn't blind you in the
  94. 2:52middle of the night where it just like
  95. 2:53you put your wrist up and it's like uh
  96. 2:55instead you just simp you Tap a button
  97. 2:57to see that and you can also exit that
  98. 2:59sleep mode if you want on to entirely
  99. 3:01meanwhile on the solar Edition they
  100. 3:02changed out that display on the Instinct
  101. 3:043 compared to the 2 and the 2x uh it is
  102. 3:06now much much more clear just really
  103. 3:08really sharp you can see kind of some
  104. 3:10comparison bits there point is you have
  105. 3:12two options there I will dive into the
  106. 3:14solar bits a little bit later on in
  107. 3:15terms of houseo works all that kind of
  108. 3:16stuff but you have your options there
  109. 3:19within that you also have two sizes for
  110. 3:20each one you have a 45 mil and you have
  111. 3:22a 50 mil so you can see right here on
  112. 3:24the AMOLED the two sizes side by side uh
  113. 3:27the one my wife's been using on the left
  114. 3:28hand side there and then this one over
  115. 3:30here the 50 mil uh just slightly
  116. 3:32different in size and that's also true
  117. 3:34for the solar side so with that I'm
  118. 3:36going to primarily be using the amlet
  119. 3:38Edition in this video uh and I will note
  120. 3:41cases where things are different but
  121. 3:42they are very very similar across the
  122. 3:44board maybe for just a minute or two
  123. 3:45I'll kind of show you how similar they
  124. 3:47are as we walk through them and hey just
  125. 3:49a quick note as we go through this if
  126. 3:50you find this video interesting useful
  127. 3:52just simply watch it all the way through
  128. 3:53that is the only thing the YouTube Gods
  129. 3:55care about at this point in time is just
  130. 3:56watch time and you finishing the video
  131. 3:59put it on kind of like a podcast that
  132. 4:00you listen to behind the scenes that
  133. 4:01would really help out quite a bit so
  134. 4:04this is the watch face right there kind
  135. 4:05of starting off with some of the basics
  136. 4:06right here uh this is the watch face it
  137. 4:08is a non-touchscreen on both of these a
  138. 4:11little bit of a disappointment there I
  139. 4:12think we all kind of hope it be a
  140. 4:13touchscreen but you know the first week
  141. 4:15or so it was hard to get used to that
  142. 4:16coming from every other AMOLED display
  143. 4:18especially in the case of the AMOLED
  144. 4:20being touchcreen but after a few days I
  145. 4:22finally got used to not being out a
  146. 4:24touch there and I don't use a touch a
  147. 4:25ton on my watch just for maps and stuff
  148. 4:27and since this doesn't have Maps it not
  149. 4:29a big deal now you can of course
  150. 4:30customize this watch face right there
  151. 4:32you can change all the different things
  152. 4:33on it uh using either the default watch
  153. 4:35faces um or using connect IQ that's
  154. 4:37their thirdparty App Store and you can
  155. 4:39download watch faces onto that uh but if
  156. 4:41I were just go ahead and middle left
  157. 4:43button right there this one over here
  158. 4:44hold on to it you can go into watch face
  159. 4:46and then you can change a bunch of the
  160. 4:48different settings here you can change
  161. 4:49the default watch faces you can add new
  162. 4:51watch faces but you can see just a
  163. 4:53couple of the ones as I iterate through
  164. 4:54this there's only one stock one right
  165. 4:56now on this Instinct 3 solar but there
  166. 4:58are plenty others that you can download
  167. 5:00and you can customize all the different
  168. 5:01data fields on there now speaking of
  169. 5:03those buttons there are five buttons in
  170. 5:04total on the right hand side there are
  171. 5:05two buttons right there and the left
  172. 5:07hand side there are three buttons right
  173. 5:09there uh essentially the upper right
  174. 5:10hand button is for confirmation opening
  175. 5:12up a sport menu the lower right hand
  176. 5:14button is kind of an escape or back
  177. 5:16button and these buttons on the side
  178. 5:17over here are for navigation through
  179. 5:19menus as you saw earlier I can just
  180. 5:21simply long hold this middle button
  181. 5:22there to open up a settings menu and
  182. 5:24then up and down from there in addition
  183. 5:26this top left hand button right there
  184. 5:27goes ahead and opens up the controls
  185. 5:28menu so I can long hold that for a
  186. 5:30second and here's the controls menu
  187. 5:32that's where I can access a flashlight
  188. 5:34or a garment pay or any of sort of the
  189. 5:35quick access control features you can
  190. 5:37always Escape back out of that by
  191. 5:39pressing the lower right hand button to
  192. 5:40get back to the watch face now going on
  193. 5:42down from that you have the widgets or
  194. 5:43the widget glances in this case you can
  195. 5:45see the differences right away between
  196. 5:47the two different display types um
  197. 5:49obviously a little bit simpler there in
  198. 5:50the case in the Solar also having solar
  199. 5:52but if I were to compare like versus
  200. 5:54like so we can crack open the weather
  201. 5:55right now I just compare this one widget
  202. 5:57area to see what that looks like see
  203. 5:59there are slight differences there but
  204. 6:01overall very very similar um only in
  205. 6:03some of the different panels of that in
  206. 6:05more detail information will you see
  207. 6:07some of those differences backing out
  208. 6:09again all these widgets are customizable
  209. 6:11so you can get rid of ones you don't
  210. 6:12want you can add ones you want uh you
  211. 6:14can tweak um how they display they order
  212. 6:16them Etc going down through here this is
  213. 6:18both kind of daily activity metrics like
  214. 6:20steps and calories and so on uh also
  215. 6:22training metrics uh as well as your
  216. 6:24calendar you can do moon phases
  217. 6:26notifications uh training readiness and
  218. 6:29at the very bottom youve got the ability
  219. 6:30to go ahead and edit that you also can
  220. 6:32add thirdparty ones through the connect
  221. 6:34iQ app store so you saw up here I had
  222. 6:36the uh one for commot that's for uh
  223. 6:38basically downloading Kut routes as well
  224. 6:40as Kut Maps that's the only way you can
  225. 6:42get maps on this but the Kut mapping
  226. 6:44experience not because of Cut's fault is
  227. 6:46very hard to use on this because it
  228. 6:48doesn't have a touchcreen so you can't
  229. 6:49really move your way around the map very
  230. 6:51easily um so it works in a pinch but
  231. 6:54it's not necessarily super amazing uh
  232. 6:56any case at the very bottom here you can
  233. 6:58see the edit option we can crack that
  234. 7:00open uh and you go down to the bottom
  235. 7:02again and you can add new widgets so
  236. 7:04right there I can add down one more time
  237. 7:07there we go and I can create folders if
  238. 7:08I want to to go ahead and basically
  239. 7:10categorize things like maybe want sports
  240. 7:12stuff in one folder and health stuff
  241. 7:13another and whatever the case is uh and
  242. 7:15you can add all sorts of different
  243. 7:17widgets into this uh in many ways this
  244. 7:19has almost the same widget list as
  245. 7:21something like the Garin Phoenix series
  246. 7:23uh but there are a couple more the
  247. 7:24Phoenix has but by and large it's very
  248. 7:26very similar across the board now going
  249. 7:28on back we go down into into the health
  250. 7:30panel and this is where you're going to
  251. 7:31see most your daily metrics so if I open
  252. 7:33this up right there uh you're going to
  253. 7:35see the first one is body battery uh now
  254. 7:38this is the watch I've been wearing the
  255. 7:39AMOLED one all day long so you'll see
  256. 7:40that body battery throughout the day
  257. 7:42body battery is think of it well just
  258. 7:44like it says your body battery
  259. 7:45throughout the day you would ideally
  260. 7:47start your day relatively high in my
  261. 7:49case I started my day at 51 uh kind of
  262. 7:51so so sleep last night and then of
  263. 7:53course the day different activities will
  264. 7:55go ahead and decrease that battery and
  265. 7:56then inversely if you were to take a nap
  266. 7:58it would increase that battery uh this
  267. 8:00does support tracking of naps so you can
  268. 8:02do that if you want to uh and if we go
  269. 8:04down again you will see some of those
  270. 8:06factors in there so you can see the
  271. 8:08Sleep Factor uh that is basically if I
  272. 8:10open this up um it shows my sleep
  273. 8:13details and so on we'll get to sleeping
  274. 8:14in just a second but if I had done a
  275. 8:16workout here it would show how much that
  276. 8:18reduced uh for my body battery I haven't
  277. 8:20done a workout yet today so we're not
  278. 8:21going to see that right there uh going
  279. 8:23on back real quick here we'll go down we
  280. 8:25see our sleep information again back
  281. 8:27into kind of the health panel if you
  282. 8:29will and this is where I can open things
  283. 8:30up and see my sleep details uh so sleep
  284. 8:33score 73 for the night sleep duration 7
  285. 8:35hours and 5 minutes quality fair and
  286. 8:37calm I go down I can see my sleep phases
  287. 8:40and stages over the course of the night
  288. 8:42I don't worry too much about sleep
  289. 8:43phases and stages in terms of accuracy
  290. 8:46uh it's really hard to judge from an
  291. 8:47accuracy standpoint because the
  292. 8:48comparative technology just aren't all
  293. 8:50that accurate like in the mid 80
  294. 8:52percentile range in a best case scenario
  295. 8:55uh so instead I really focus on did it
  296. 8:57get the time I went to sleep correct and
  297. 8:58the time I woke up correct and in the
  298. 8:59case of Instinct 3 it's it's nailed all
  299. 9:01those I don't tend to have many problems
  300. 9:03anymore with gar and watches I have
  301. 9:05little kids and they wake up at all
  302. 9:06sment uh times the night and it does a
  303. 9:09really good job of tracking even if I go
  304. 9:10back to bed early in the morning at 5 or
  305. 9:126 or something like that uh for another
  306. 9:13hour or two it tracks that pretty well
  307. 9:16backing out of here uh we can see naps
  308. 9:18nap tracking there no naps today you can
  309. 9:20either manually start an appp if you
  310. 9:22want to that allows you to set an alarm
  311. 9:23um or you can just simply fall asleep
  312. 9:25and it does pretty good job of that I do
  313. 9:27find it tends to do a better job though
  314. 9:29when I'm lying down for nap tracking
  315. 9:31versus sometimes uh sitting up on a a
  316. 9:33couch or whatnot or especially like an
  317. 9:35airplane or a train doesn't seem to
  318. 9:37track the Naps as well there down below
  319. 9:39that we've got the heart rate tracking
  320. 9:42this is going to track throughout the
  321. 9:43day uh my heart rate obviously I've just
  322. 9:44taken this off so you're not going to
  323. 9:45see it there but you can see my average
  324. 9:47resting heart rate over the last 7 Days
  325. 9:50uh and of course the last few hours
  326. 9:51backing out again we've got HRV status
  327. 9:54now as I mentioned earlier on this video
  328. 9:55is sponsored by Precision Fuel and
  329. 9:57hydration I've been using Precision Fuel
  330. 9:59and hydration for quite a number of
  331. 10:00years now along with my wife and all of
  332. 10:02my training and racing needs in fact the
  333. 10:03moment I finish filming this we're going
  334. 10:05to be going to the airport to head to
  335. 10:06race where she's can be racing and
  336. 10:08she'll be using Precision Fuel and
  337. 10:09hydration products in that race but it's
  338. 10:11not just us that's using it it's also
  339. 10:13pro teams uh major league baseball teams
  340. 10:15NFL teams both the men and the women
  341. 10:17side of the pro tour as well as people
  342. 10:18just doing crazy Adventures when I go on
  343. 10:20some of my Adventures one of the things
  344. 10:22you can do is to call up Precision Fuel
  345. 10:23and hydration and have a zoom call with
  346. 10:26them you can basically spend like 20
  347. 10:27minutes with them with their Sports
  348. 10:28scientist talking about what your uh
  349. 10:30race or event goals are and they'll talk
  350. 10:32through what exact products to use and
  351. 10:34it's totally free like it's super cool I
  352. 10:36did that before my last crazy hike that
  353. 10:38I did uh a couple day truck across
  354. 10:40Madera and they were really useful in
  355. 10:41trying to figure out what I should do to
  356. 10:43be able to blend kind of the Precision
  357. 10:45fuel products with real food because I
  358. 10:46was doing like 14-hour days day after
  359. 10:49day and carrying all my own stuff with
  360. 10:51me uh the cool part is though you can
  361. 10:52try it yourself if you use a coupon code
  362. 10:54in the screen right there you get 15%
  363. 10:56off your first order thanks again in
  364. 10:57Precision Fuel and hydration for
  365. 10:59sponsoring this video uh hrb status is
  366. 11:01heart rate variability status
  367. 11:03essentially it's measuring uh the timing
  368. 11:05in between the heart rats uh and you
  369. 11:07know people differ a little bit on this
  370. 11:09in terms of how their HRV Trends over
  371. 11:11time for most people though a lower
  372. 11:13value like 20 or 30s uh would indicate
  373. 11:16more stress or fatigue uh versus a
  374. 11:18higher value tends to be uh more
  375. 11:20recovery and again that the scale varies
  376. 11:22so the fact that my balanced here is at
  377. 11:2450 uh could be quite different than
  378. 11:27yours yours could be something like my
  379. 11:28wife's balanced is much much higher 60
  380. 11:3170 and then one of my friends Dez of
  381. 11:33desfit is balanced just more like 30 or
  382. 11:35so so again the actual numbers aren't as
  383. 11:37important it's kind of where you vary uh
  384. 11:39but in a nutshell to get your HRV status
  385. 11:41you need essentially 19 nights of sleep
  386. 11:43first with your garmar and watch um or a
  387. 11:45gin watch and then it'll keep that data
  388. 11:47from there on out and start to kind of
  389. 11:48build out your profile within that I can
  390. 11:50look at any given night so here's last
  391. 11:52night's HRV status over the course of
  392. 11:54the night and then we go down again uh
  393. 11:56you can see the 7-Day average uh and
  394. 11:58then down again my Baseline over the
  395. 12:00last four weeks uh now there are some
  396. 12:02good scenarios where you see the
  397. 12:04difference between uh the AMOLED and the
  398. 12:06solar Edition and this is one of them
  399. 12:07right there uh this chart right there
  400. 12:10the bottom one right there does not
  401. 12:11exist on the solar Edition for whatever
  402. 12:14reason I don't really know why but it
  403. 12:15doesn't show up on solar Edition uh so
  404. 12:18that's something to keep in mind I find
  405. 12:19HRV tracking a really good General
  406. 12:21indicator especially recovering from
  407. 12:23sickness or going into sickness and so
  408. 12:25you know there are a lot of factors for
  409. 12:26HRV that will impact it so one of them
  410. 12:28is how much sleep you got of course uh
  411. 12:30fatigue jet lag drugs alcohol and drugs
  412. 12:33being both like good normal drugs you
  413. 12:35may be taking or maybe not so good drugs
  414. 12:37whatever you want to classify that as um
  415. 12:39all those things will absolutely impact
  416. 12:40your HRV status just because the number
  417. 12:42goes down doesn't necessarily mean a bad
  418. 12:45thing like if you had a really hard
  419. 12:46training session you did like a crazy uh
  420. 12:49Trek or something like that your HRV is
  421. 12:50going to plummet because your body's
  422. 12:52recovering uh so you have to know why
  423. 12:54it's actually dropping whether it's
  424. 12:55because you're not feeling well or
  425. 12:57because as you just did some hard
  426. 12:58workouts last few days days and your
  427. 12:59body needs more time to recover so
  428. 13:02backing out of there real quick we'll go
  429. 13:03back out to here here you can see of
  430. 13:05course your steps and of course across
  431. 13:07the entire day I can go down again see
  432. 13:09my day streak doing a lot more riding
  433. 13:11last week or so so we're seeing less
  434. 13:12steps this week uh and then the distance
  435. 13:14for each day going on back again go down
  436. 13:18to psox uh this is the feature I tend to
  437. 13:20leave off pulsox is your blood
  438. 13:22oxygenation levels at night but it burns
  439. 13:24the crap out of batteries especially on
  440. 13:26Garr watches and so Garr has a much
  441. 13:28higher granularity level when it comes
  442. 13:29to uh the pulse ox or blood oxygenation
  443. 13:32level compared to most of their
  444. 13:33competitors uh but that comes at the
  445. 13:35cost of a lot more battery by default it
  446. 13:37is off and I leave it off for both sleep
  447. 13:39and uh regular wear so just my my
  448. 13:42recommendation there um but that is your
  449. 13:44stats within this from a General Health
  450. 13:46standpoint there are gazillion other
  451. 13:48stats that you can do like respiration
  452. 13:49rate and you can Trend this Etc you can
  453. 13:51see this on the watch or you can see all
  454. 13:53these stats in the Garmin Connect Mobile
  455. 13:55app just like these screenshots right
  456. 13:56there and you can then Trend them over
  457. 13:58very long for the time if you want to so
  458. 14:00everything is in the grma Connect Mobile
  459. 14:02app you know people have varying
  460. 14:03opinions on that app uh but there's no
  461. 14:05app in the sports fitness world that has
  462. 14:08as much depth as the G Connect Mobile
  463. 14:10app does whether or not you find that
  464. 14:12depth a bit too deep if that makes sense
  465. 14:15um is up to you but you can customize it
  466. 14:17quite a bit now the last thing to talk
  467. 14:19about is kind of related to that which
  468. 14:20is settings uh you can change settings
  469. 14:22on the watch by just we'll Escape back
  470. 14:23to the watch face real quick so we're
  471. 14:25back to here and then we'll long hold
  472. 14:27this middle left hand button to get the
  473. 14:29settings menu and then we'll just simply
  474. 14:30go down using the lower left hand button
  475. 14:33this is where all the different settings
  476. 14:34are and just like the G mobile app there
  477. 14:36are a million settings on our Garin
  478. 14:38watch some people think there's too many
  479. 14:39settings but I think most people kind of
  480. 14:41get used to that over time you can
  481. 14:42change those settings on the watch or on
  482. 14:44the Garment Connect Mobile app that's
  483. 14:46something garment add in the last couple
  484. 14:47years and now virtually every single
  485. 14:49setting you can change on the mobile app
  486. 14:51or change on the watch it's really your
  487. 14:52choice okay so let's talk about one of
  488. 14:54my favorite features which is the
  489. 14:55flashlight I know this will sound
  490. 14:57inspector gadgy to some people and I say
  491. 14:58this all the time but it is by far my
  492. 15:01favorite feature on this watch and for a
  493. 15:02lot of people it's like a hard stop now
  494. 15:04for my wife she is hard stop she will
  495. 15:06not use a was without a flashlight
  496. 15:08anymore so the way the flashlight works
  497. 15:10on this watch is it's actually a real
  498. 15:11flashlight on the top if I were to
  499. 15:13double tap this up there you'll see the
  500. 15:14flashlight turns on I can double tap
  501. 15:16this one uh it is both a red and a white
  502. 15:18flashlight so if I were to double tap
  503. 15:20this to turn it off and then turn it
  504. 15:21back on again just so you can see the
  505. 15:22settings control menu there um you'll
  506. 15:24see the bottom I can increase this from
  507. 15:26the one red setting to four different
  508. 15:28White settings uh so you can go ahead
  509. 15:30and change the brightness level uh that
  510. 15:31way you can see it and I find this most
  511. 15:33useful obviously in dark scenarios at
  512. 15:35night but not just like hiking intense
  513. 15:37and crazy adventure things but more
  514. 15:39practical things like getting around a
  515. 15:41hotel room in the middle of the night uh
  516. 15:42as I mentioned earlier on Jumping On a
  517. 15:44Plane here and I've got like four
  518. 15:45different hotels over the next week also
  519. 15:47though in the sport modes you can have
  520. 15:49the flashlight automatically sync to
  521. 15:51your Cadence so if you're running and
  522. 15:53maybe it's a bit dark uh and you forgot
  523. 15:54a light or whatever the case is you can
  524. 15:56turn on the flashlight and have it
  525. 15:57essentially syn to your Cadence and act
  526. 15:59as a bit of a strobe light so people
  527. 16:00around you can see you you can also
  528. 16:02access the flashlight using the controls
  529. 16:03menu long hold up here uh and then go
  530. 16:06down to Flashlight right there then you
  531. 16:08got this menu to turn it on and you can
  532. 16:09go up and down here let's turn off the
  533. 16:11flashlight now and go into the sports
  534. 16:13menus so I'm just going to skate back to
  535. 16:15the uh watch face right there and then
  536. 16:17press the upper right hand button and on
  537. 16:19a Garin watch that will always get you
  538. 16:21to the sport menu uh and here is all the
  539. 16:23sports that you can choose from on the
  540. 16:25screen right now so plenty of sports to
  541. 16:27choose from right there uh you can go
  542. 16:29and pin these Sports to the top of this
  543. 16:30list if you want to uh based on what
  544. 16:32your favorites are so you can see I've
  545. 16:33pinned hike and run and bike and pool
  546. 16:35swim and Open Water Swim trailer run
  547. 16:36stand paddle board and so on but if I go
  548. 16:38on down from there I've got more options
  549. 16:40down at the very bottom the little plus
  550. 16:41I'm just going to move that one out of
  551. 16:42the way for now uh and you can see all
  552. 16:44different sports by categories Garmin
  553. 16:46typically will add sport modes over time
  554. 16:48I would expect to see more sport modes
  555. 16:50added over time uh to these watches
  556. 16:51garmin's actually added a lot to the
  557. 16:53Instinct 2 Series for example over the
  558. 16:55last couple years and I would expect the
  559. 16:57same for the Instinct 3 now going on
  560. 16:59back here I'm just going to start over
  561. 17:00again and choose the run to go into show
  562. 17:02some options so I'll tap this again to
  563. 17:04select it uh this point is going to give
  564. 17:05my daily suggested workout which today
  565. 17:07is telling me to rest which I'm good
  566. 17:09with and the reason of course it's
  567. 17:11telling me to rest is because I've had I
  568. 17:12think like four or five straight days of
  569. 17:14pretty hard trainer workouts back there
  570. 17:16uh and now it's like yo you've you've
  571. 17:18probably done a little bit too much
  572. 17:19right now uh which is fine I can also
  573. 17:21say nah I'm good with that and go to
  574. 17:23more suggestions and see what else will
  575. 17:24give me uh and it's got a base workout
  576. 17:26for tomorrow a rest day a Sprint workout
  577. 17:29and if I open that you can see this
  578. 17:30workout for running and the Sprints that
  579. 17:32it's got there uh so the way this works
  580. 17:34on a Garmin wash these daily suggested
  581. 17:36workouts is by default it's just going
  582. 17:38to try to make you stronger and stronger
  583. 17:40over time relatively straightforward and
  584. 17:42it's going to use all of your data
  585. 17:43history to do that and so it's going to
  586. 17:45give you workouts that are appropriate
  587. 17:47uh for your history based on what it
  588. 17:49knows about you thus if you've just
  589. 17:51started with the watch it's going to
  590. 17:52take a few weeks really it kind of Finds
  591. 17:54Its its uh Groove at about the 4-we
  592. 17:56marker when it's got plenty of data on
  593. 17:58your athletic history to figure things
  594. 18:00out but the second way you can do this
  595. 18:02if you put items on your Garmin Connect
  596. 18:04calendar events or races so you can go
  597. 18:06in the Garmin Connect app you can add an
  598. 18:07event or race to it just like that right
  599. 18:09there and when you do that it'll go
  600. 18:10ahead and automatically start changing
  601. 18:12your workouts either bike or run for
  602. 18:14that event it could be a marathon it
  603. 18:15could be a a bike race Etc I put it on
  604. 18:18the counter it's going to do a taper for
  605. 18:19you and you'll see the different phases
  606. 18:21or stages within that so you'll see for
  607. 18:23example your build phase and your uh
  608. 18:24kind of peaking phase and Recovery phase
  609. 18:26all within the watch it's super cool in
  610. 18:28the the suggestions it gives are very
  611. 18:30legit like it'll do a really good job of
  612. 18:32getting you ready for that race in
  613. 18:34general though it'll error slightly on
  614. 18:37the side of caution in terms of uh
  615. 18:39favoring a little bit more recovery and
  616. 18:40rest than going towards too hard and
  617. 18:43getting you injured which I think is a
  618. 18:44fair thing you can though also add a set
  619. 18:47training plan if you don't want like the
  620. 18:48nebulousness this where it'll change it
  621. 18:50automatically in the fly if you had poor
  622. 18:51sleep or you did too much yesterday
  623. 18:53whatever the case is you can do a
  624. 18:55structured set schedule or calendar uh
  625. 18:57for that race you can go in the gar app
  626. 18:59you can choose what event type you're
  627. 19:00doing and it's just going to put a whole
  628. 19:02slate of workouts on your calendar
  629. 19:04regardless of what your what's going on
  630. 19:05in your life versus with the daily
  631. 19:07suggested workouts and you put an event
  632. 19:09on your calendar it'll automatically
  633. 19:11change based on what's Happening and you
  634. 19:12can choose for example what day you're
  635. 19:14long run is or you can choose uh what
  636. 19:16days you want to skip and so on any case
  637. 19:18skipping out of this for right now we'll
  638. 19:19go back into run uh and then this is the
  639. 19:21Run screen where you can see my GPS
  640. 19:23status at the top the battery uh as well
  641. 19:25as any sensor connectivity if I had any
  642. 19:27sensors connected right now I don't so
  643. 19:29no worries about that uh versus if I
  644. 19:31were to go ahead and go into bike mode
  645. 19:32it would connect to some of those
  646. 19:33sensors back there on the bike meanwhile
  647. 19:36if I hold the left- hand button for a
  648. 19:37second we can go into the Run settings
  649. 19:39uh here you can change all of your
  650. 19:40individual run settings I open this up
  651. 19:42one more time you can change your data
  652. 19:44screens you can go down further you can
  653. 19:46add data screens you can tweak data
  654. 19:48screens so going on down to the very
  655. 19:50bottom I can choose to add a new data
  656. 19:51screen I can choose custom data and you
  657. 19:54can see the number of fields I want to
  658. 19:56put on each individual one you can have
  659. 19:58numerous different different uh data
  660. 19:59pages and then each one can have up to
  661. 20:02six data fields per page in different
  662. 20:04configurations so for example this six
  663. 20:06field one versus this six field one and
  664. 20:08you can change every single field that
  665. 20:10you put on there so I just confirm this
  666. 20:11right now I can choose data field one go
  667. 20:14through all the different data fields
  668. 20:16here uh and again there are tons and
  669. 20:17tons of different data fields to choose
  670. 20:19from covering pretty much everything you
  671. 20:21could possibly want I can also Escape
  672. 20:23back out of this back on more time and
  673. 20:25you can choose kind of more generalized
  674. 20:27data screens so for example gr Dynamics
  675. 20:29virtual partner Compass elevation music
  676. 20:32clock and then on mine already I have
  677. 20:34for example the heart rate gauge there
  678. 20:36set up I've got the map page and map in
  679. 20:38this case just simply means a a blank
  680. 20:40slate where You' have a route drawn on
  681. 20:41we'll talk about that a little bit later
  682. 20:43on I go up here again time of day uh and
  683. 20:46these are the the lap page there as well
  684. 20:48as the base page and again you can
  685. 20:50customize these back into the Run
  686. 20:51settings you can add alerts uh for
  687. 20:53example you can add a Cadence alert or
  688. 20:55distance alert or time alert a heart
  689. 20:56rate alert Pace alert uh and so on you
  690. 20:58can go down here go back one more time
  691. 21:01uh you can turn on and off the metronome
  692. 21:02if you want to try to you know be pacing
  693. 21:04your Cadence to a given uh beat you can
  694. 21:07turn on autol app by default set for one
  695. 21:09mile or one kilometer depending on
  696. 21:11whether you have metric or imperial
  697. 21:12setup or statute setup you can do auto
  698. 21:15pause Auto climb uh turn on and off
  699. 21:17running power uh have the lap key and
  700. 21:20you can broadcast your heart rate
  701. 21:21broadcasting heart rate is cool when you
  702. 21:23have a thirdparty app for example uh
  703. 21:25I've got my trainer back there and I use
  704. 21:27whift with it on an iPad this allows me
  705. 21:30to connect up to zift and broadcast my
  706. 21:32heart rate into the app exact same thing
  707. 21:34on pelaton where you want to go ahead
  708. 21:35and just have it use the optical heart
  709. 21:37rate on your wrist and then peleton can
  710. 21:38read that it does that across both amp
  711. 21:40plus as well as bluetooth smart in the
  712. 21:42next one there there's that strobe
  713. 21:43option that I mentioned earlier on so go
  714. 21:45ahead and turn on the strobe you can
  715. 21:47choose based on Cadence um or on a
  716. 21:49couple different kind of pulse types if
  717. 21:50you will and then you can say you know
  718. 21:52what I want it on only after Sunset um
  719. 21:55or off Etc so it's not something I tend
  720. 21:57to use but it's kind of need to have
  721. 21:59that feature there if you want it uh now
  722. 22:01next you got the satellite type by
  723. 22:03default it's going to use something
  724. 22:04called Auto Select uh and we're going to
  725. 22:06talk about that a little bit later on so
  726. 22:07hang tight for that one there and just
  727. 22:09remember where that's setting is for
  728. 22:10later uh beyond that you can add
  729. 22:12structure training to it uh so for
  730. 22:14example you can go ahead and add
  731. 22:16different structured workouts ones that
  732. 22:17you download from Garmin Connect as I
  733. 22:19mentioned earlier ones that you create
  734. 22:21on the Garmin Connect app like this
  735. 22:22right here or you get created from a
  736. 22:24thirdparty platform like trending Peaks
  737. 22:26or whatever it may be push to your watch
  738. 22:28those are all here you can also do a
  739. 22:30quick workout where you just simply make
  740. 22:31intervals based on time and distance and
  741. 22:33whatnot and just simply get out the door
  742. 22:35so I tend to use structure workouts
  743. 22:37downloaded uh from garment connect via
  744. 22:39training Peaks or other platforms uh but
  745. 22:41again the world's your oyster there once
  746. 22:43you're ready to actually do that workout
  747. 22:44you just go up to the top here back one
  748. 22:47more time and just simp be pressed this
  749. 22:48top right hand button uh and then you're
  750. 22:50often running quite literally uh so here
  751. 22:53you'll see your data Pages I'm going to
  752. 22:54put some on the screen right now to what
  753. 22:56it actually looks like while you're out
  754. 22:57running uh as you configure them it's
  755. 22:59really as simple as that you can always
  756. 23:01pause your workout at any point in time
  757. 23:03by pressing the upper right hand button
  758. 23:04just simply pauses it and then you can
  759. 23:06go ahead and either resume that if you
  760. 23:08want to you can save it you can also
  761. 23:09resume later let's say you're hiking or
  762. 23:11whatnot and you want to Simply pause it
  763. 23:13for the night you want one big thing
  764. 23:14over the course of multiple days you can
  765. 23:16do that um or if you're just stopping
  766. 23:18for a few hours you don't want it
  767. 23:19accidentally like bumped or ended or
  768. 23:20whatever um just hit resume later and
  769. 23:22then go back into the sport menu
  770. 23:24afterwards to resume that particular
  771. 23:25activity once youve completed your
  772. 23:27activity you hit the save button instead
  773. 23:29and you get a summary on your watch
  774. 23:30you're going to see basically your
  775. 23:32totals at the top and then all the
  776. 23:33different categories as you scroll
  777. 23:35through this list here will show you the
  778. 23:36stats for those categories uh now
  779. 23:38there's a lot of stats here but there's
  780. 23:40even more stats in the Garmin Connect
  781. 23:42app so you can open up the Garmin
  782. 23:43Connect app and you can see all those
  783. 23:45stats there you can dive into them and
  784. 23:47of course if you do have a connection to
  785. 23:48strav or trening Peaks or whatnot it'll
  786. 23:50go ahead and sync to that as well
  787. 23:52automatically within like 3 seconds it's
  788. 23:54very very quick uh and you can see those
  789. 23:56stats there again just like with the G
  790. 23:58connect a mobile app for General Health
  791. 24:00stats there is a gazillion stats here
  792. 24:02some people find it overwhelming but
  793. 24:04most find they've done a pretty good job
  794. 24:05of boiling the most important stats at
  795. 24:07the top and you can dig as deep as you'd
  796. 24:09like to to go ahead and get the rest of
  797. 24:10those stats now as I mentioned earlier
  798. 24:12one of the things that you can tweak is
  799. 24:13that satellite mode I want to mention
  800. 24:15this very quickly because it's super
  801. 24:16super interesting so if I go back here
  802. 24:18and I just open up the sport settings
  803. 24:20middle left hand button there run
  804. 24:21settings and I go down to satellite mode
  805. 24:25there we
  806. 24:26go satellites you've got a couple
  807. 24:28different modes here by default you will
  808. 24:31be in called Auto Select which garment
  809. 24:33also from a marketing standpoint called
  810. 24:34s IQ what s IQ does is it automatically
  811. 24:37uses all the satellites that you have
  812. 24:39available to you U multiband or dual
  813. 24:41frequency satellites uh when it needs it
  814. 24:44like for example up against a rock cliff
  815. 24:46or you know next to a cave or whatever
  816. 24:48the case is in hard conditions uh in
  817. 24:50buildings in you know downtown New York
  818. 24:51uh it'll use that but that of course
  819. 24:53costs more power and it reduces your
  820. 24:55battery life versus the other end you
  821. 24:57have something like GPS only which is
  822. 24:59very very basic and has an amazing
  823. 25:00battery life but the accuracy may not be
  824. 25:02quite as good in complex situations but
  825. 25:05in really easy situations like an open
  826. 25:06field or just you know very light tree
  827. 25:09cover it's going to have no problems and
  828. 25:11so it's going to automatically
  829. 25:12dynamically switch between the different
  830. 25:13modes that it needs to to give you the
  831. 25:15most battery life and it's really the
  832. 25:17only company that does that and it's a
  833. 25:18huge Hardware Advantage for Garmin
  834. 25:20something they've done in the last
  835. 25:21couple years that really helps them from
  836. 25:23an accuracy standpoint uh in battery
  837. 25:25perspective as well now why I mention
  838. 25:28this is because the default is Auto
  839. 25:30Select and it does an exceptionally good
  840. 25:32job but if you need more battery you can
  841. 25:34go down to GPS only and in my review one
  842. 25:37of the things I did was I did a bunch of
  843. 25:39workouts including a 12-hour 70 km hike
  844. 25:42uh in just a GPS only mode to see one
  845. 25:44what the battery life was like and two
  846. 25:46what the accuracy was like even into the
  847. 25:48mountains and it's really impressive and
  848. 25:50I would say for the vast majority of
  849. 25:52people unless you had a bunch of
  850. 25:53different GPS watches at the same time
  851. 25:55like I did you would never notice the
  852. 25:57difference between the GPS track
  853. 25:58now once you get into something like New
  854. 26:00York City that's a bit different because
  855. 26:03of the reflections and the way things
  856. 26:04work and you really want that multiband
  857. 26:06or dual frequency uh option there but
  858. 26:08for most scenarios you don't need that
  859. 26:10now if you did want to force it into
  860. 26:12multiband you can do all plus multiband
  861. 26:14like you see right there which does
  862. 26:16force into multiband all the time but
  863. 26:18you're going to burn a bit more battery
  864. 26:19life again here's that battery chart
  865. 26:21right there just something to think
  866. 26:22about note that you can set this on a
  867. 26:24per sport profile basis maybe some sport
  868. 26:26profiles you want it at a higher setting
  869. 26:28what not uh but you can also set it
  870. 26:29across the board for all of your
  871. 26:32workouts um unless you change it
  872. 26:33otherwise by going into settings
  873. 26:35satellites and Auto Select as my default
  874. 26:37for all profiles and I can have an
  875. 26:39individual sport profile override that
  876. 26:41okay so now we talked about the sport
  877. 26:43side of it we've completed workout we
  878. 26:44talked about satellites let's talk about
  879. 26:45some of the training readiness and
  880. 26:47trending status and trending load
  881. 26:49recovery type stats so I'm going to go
  882. 26:50back out of this back to the main menu
  883. 26:52and I'm going to go down until you see
  884. 26:53training there we go uh so opening this
  885. 26:56up I've got my training readiness
  886. 26:57training St thus uh my FTP and V2 Max
  887. 27:01and last activity so we're going to
  888. 27:03start off with my training readiness
  889. 27:05this is the one that's most applicable
  890. 27:06to everyone if you don't care about like
  891. 27:08training from a you know you know High
  892. 27:11uh performance standpoint trading
  893. 27:13Readiness is good across the board and
  894. 27:15what training readiness is essentially
  895. 27:16telling you is exactly what its name is
  896. 27:18your Readiness to train at any point in
  897. 27:20time during that day so right now see my
  898. 27:23Readiness to train is 42 out of 100 and
  899. 27:25the factors that get into that are sleep
  900. 27:28recovery time HRV status acute load in
  901. 27:30other words how much training have you
  902. 27:31done in the last seven days uh as well
  903. 27:33as sleep history and stress history the
  904. 27:36most important ones for this are really
  905. 27:38sleep um and effectively via the
  906. 27:39recovery side so if your recovery is
  907. 27:41super high and your sleep's bad it's
  908. 27:43going to tell you to chill out it gives
  909. 27:45you then the score here of 42 the
  910. 27:47interesting part though is this score
  911. 27:49for most people will slowly rise over
  912. 27:51the course of the day because your
  913. 27:53recovery time is going down so if I open
  914. 27:55this up right now my recovery time uh is
  915. 27:5816 hours remaining so as it sticks down
  916. 28:00it's basically saying hey you're closer
  917. 28:02to being ready to train uh for your next
  918. 28:05hard workout that's what recovery time
  919. 28:07is really telling you uh but it also
  920. 28:08notes that it's delayed by poor sleep
  921. 28:10and my sleep wasn't super great last
  922. 28:12night some like middle of the night kid
  923. 28:13interruptions um so it wasn't amazing
  924. 28:16thus it's delayed uh recovery because of
  925. 28:18that going on back here you can see my
  926. 28:20HRV status we talked about earlier was
  927. 28:22good my cute load is optimal right now
  928. 28:25this green range right there is called
  929. 28:26the tunnel so basically that is my
  930. 28:28normal range uh as of last a while uh
  931. 28:31generally speaking my green tunnel here
  932. 28:33is roughly between 1,000 and 2,000 but
  933. 28:36over the holiday so I'm filming this in
  934. 28:37early February and over roughly you know
  935. 28:39the holiday time period um I reduced my
  936. 28:41training load as I usually do and so my
  937. 28:44tunnel kind of reduced itself long term
  938. 28:46over the course of a 30-day period and
  939. 28:48now I'm slowly building that back up
  940. 28:49again that little dot dot dot there
  941. 28:51though is a last 7 Days uh so you can
  942. 28:53see I haven't done a workout yet today
  943. 28:55uh so my training load for today is
  944. 28:57basically the 7-Day average if you will
  945. 28:59um that right now is sitting at 879
  946. 29:02versus if I did a workout now that would
  947. 29:04pump that higher and probably just be
  948. 29:06the upper edge of that green area there
  949. 29:09uh going on down further you've got the
  950. 29:11Sleep history uh stress history and then
  951. 29:14we're back to sleep for last night so
  952. 29:16the idea with trading Readiness is that
  953. 29:17should grow over the course of the day
  954. 29:18but then if I did a workout right now
  955. 29:20that training readiness value would drop
  956. 29:22probably to the low teens because I just
  957. 29:24did a hard workout thus my Readiness to
  958. 29:26train is much lower I find in general
  959. 29:29this is a pretty good indicator of how
  960. 29:30things are going for some people the the
  961. 29:33scales aren't quite always nailed for
  962. 29:34example my wife her training readiness
  963. 29:37is always really low even when she has
  964. 29:38amazing sleep and you know her training
  965. 29:40load's exactly where she wants it it
  966. 29:42doesn't quite seem to work out but I
  967. 29:43think for me and a lot of the people
  968. 29:45it's a really interesting way of kind of
  969. 29:46balancing things uh now going on back
  970. 29:49here into this we have training status
  971. 29:51uh now think about training readiness as
  972. 29:53a day-to-day thing on are you ready to
  973. 29:55train based on all of your life factors
  974. 29:57versus is trending status is really
  975. 29:59focused just on the sport side of things
  976. 30:02uh and so it really has three core
  977. 30:04things that it cares about one is your
  978. 30:06V2 max value two is your heart rate
  979. 30:08variability and three is your acute load
  980. 30:11and the reason it cares about those
  981. 30:12three things is they act as checks and
  982. 30:13balance for each other uh meaning that
  983. 30:15if your acute load is crazy high like
  984. 30:18you're doing a training camp or
  985. 30:19something like that uh but your HRV
  986. 30:21status is showing balance mean that
  987. 30:22you're doing a good job recovering each
  988. 30:24night uh and your V2 Max isn't showing
  989. 30:26as going down then it's going to say you
  990. 30:28know what you're probably still all
  991. 30:29right uh but if your trending load
  992. 30:31spikes up really high your HRV status
  993. 30:33starts to plummet and your V2 Max starts
  994. 30:35to Flat lineer go downhill that's a sign
  995. 30:37that you're just doing too much and
  996. 30:39that's where you can get the dreaded
  997. 30:40unproductive message uh that you know
  998. 30:42has been kind of popular with Garin
  999. 30:44watches over the last couple years but
1000. 30:46that message is much much more difficult
  1001. 30:47to get in 2025 2024 even 2023 uh because
1002. 30:51of the changes garment made around
1003. 30:53trading status 2.0 which is what you see
1004. 30:55here so if I go down from here you'll
1005. 30:57see those factors again a cute load like
1006. 30:59we just looked at a second ago go on
1007. 31:01back uh we have load Focus so basically
1008. 31:04all these different Focus areas or types
1009. 31:06of trending uh balanced and you can see
1010. 31:08they're pretty much in the optimal
1011. 31:09ranges right there go on back again one
1012. 31:11more time we have my V2 Max right now
1013. 31:14and then go down here again and you can
1014. 31:15see HRV status if I look at my V2 Max
1015. 31:18you can see how it's shifting over time
1016. 31:20as I ramp back up into some of my harder
1017. 31:22workouts after the holidays uh and then
1018. 31:24because this shows last four weeks or so
1019. 31:26and the idea being that your V2 Max
1020. 31:27should be either steady or increasing
1021. 31:29obviously V2 Max is not going to
  1022. 31:30increase forever eventually you'll
1023. 31:32Flatline based on your genetic profile
1024. 31:34or whatnot uh so the goal isn't to go
1025. 31:36forever upwards but to at least get to
1026. 31:37kind of your uh normal steady state if
1027. 31:40you will after being well trained for a
1028. 31:41while now going up to cute load you'll
1029. 31:43notice one more kind of new thing in the
  1030. 31:44Instinct 3 Series go down here you've
1031. 31:47got this we just showed about the
  1032. 31:48exercise load as it's categorized per
1033. 31:50day but also here load ratio load ratio
1034. 31:52is essentially looking at how your 7-Day
1035. 31:54load other words last week's worth of
1036. 31:55load compares to the last 30 days worth
1037. 31:57of load it's really as simple as that
1038. 31:59and essentially if they were exactly the
  1039. 32:01same as an average then they'd be 1.0
  1040. 32:03but of course you're allowed to go a
1041. 32:04little bit higher than that cuz that's
1042. 32:05how you get uh better trained more fit
1043. 32:08Etc so you want to have the speed dis a
1044. 32:09little bit higher here so you're getting
1045. 32:11more fit over time but if you did too
1046. 32:13much if you do way too much this we
1047. 32:15compared to your Norm that's where you
1048. 32:16run the risk of injury and the inverse
1049. 32:18side if you go down there and you're
1050. 32:20just doing a fraction what you normally
1051. 32:21do then you could either be recovering
1052. 32:23or tapering for something which is a
1053. 32:25recovery status or you get to a point
1054. 32:27where you're probably just going to go
1055. 32:28ahead and start losing some of your
1056. 32:29Fitness gains so this is new in the
  1057. 32:31Instinct 3 but has been around garmin's
1058. 32:33other watches for a while okay so that
1059. 32:34kind of wraps up the trending Lo bits
1060. 32:36one more thing I want to mention very
1061. 32:37quickly though is the sensor
1062. 32:38connectivity so I'm going to go back to
1063. 32:40the watch face here middle button right
1064. 32:42there and we'll go down into sensors and
1065. 32:45accessories uh this is where I can pair
1066. 32:47new sensors or connect to any sort of
1067. 32:48amp Plus or bluetooth smart sensor so
1068. 32:50I've got my bike back there uh and you
1069. 32:52can see I've got different Power meters
1070. 32:54for Different Bikes floating around here
1071. 32:56I go down I can also turn turn on and
1072. 32:58off the wrist heart rate pulse Sox
1073. 33:00Compass altimeter and so on but if I go
1074. 33:02back up here to the top I click add new
1075. 33:04and this is where I can search for
1076. 33:05sensors I can search for all sensors
  1077. 33:06nearby or I can search for a certain
1078. 33:08sensor type and then pair that one
1079. 33:10sensor type so I'm just going to go back
1080. 33:12to the top here search all sensors and
1081. 33:15now it's going to look across both amp
1082. 33:16Plus and Bluetooth smart here are the
1083. 33:18sensor types it connects to uh listed at
1084. 33:20the bottom of the screen right now I'll
1085. 33:21just simply turn this on real quick wake
1086. 33:24up these two trainers and we'll get some
  1087. 33:26sensors here it's bound find something
  1088. 33:28back there there's there's like three
1089. 33:29power meters in each of those bikes and
1090. 33:31something's bound to show up in fact I
1091. 33:33can even turn on the radar right here
1092. 33:34that'll do the trick too okay there we
1093. 33:36go now we got some things showing up so
1094. 33:38we got a power meter we got a Speed and
  1095. 33:39Cadence Sensor we got a trainer I can
1096. 33:41show Bluetooth sensors as well so you
1097. 33:43can see the drad trainer over there I've
1098. 33:45got my Quirk power meter and so on from
1099. 33:47here I can just simply save one of these
1100. 33:49just like that and now it's saved and I
1101. 33:51go back and I can see the sensor details
1102. 33:53if I go down here at the bottom back one
1103. 33:55more time down here at the bottom and
1104. 33:57it'll reconnect to this in just a second
1105. 33:59usually after it pairs it takes a couple
1106. 34:01seconds to go ahead and reconnect to it
1107. 34:03and it's as simple as that you can name
1108. 34:04sensors if you like to uh you can go
1109. 34:06ahead and disable them enable them you
1110. 34:08go configure things like the calibration
1111. 34:09if you want to or crank length for some
1112. 34:11power meters and so on and you can save
1113. 34:13multiple sensors of the same type in
1114. 34:14case you have multiple bikes like this
1115. 34:16here okay so at this point we're done
  1116. 34:18from a sport standpoint but I want to
1117. 34:20talk about navigation uh and routing and
1118. 34:22then we'll get into some of the solar
1119. 34:24features garment pay and wrap things up
  1120. 34:27so let's let's talk about navigation now
1121. 34:30the bad news on this watch is there's no
1122. 34:32maps and I've gone down that entire rant
1123. 34:34on my review but the fact that there's
1124. 34:35no maps on this watch so we're going to
1125. 34:37talk about what it does have which is
1126. 34:39breadcrumb style navigation that means
1127. 34:41it's going to go ahead and allow you to
  1128. 34:42navigate a route it's going to give you
1129. 34:43turn by turn steps but you won't see a
1130. 34:45map behind it like you would see on a
1131. 34:47Garmin Phoenix series still it works
1132. 34:49that's what you know many watches have
1133. 34:51had for like a decade now but at this
1134. 34:53point in 2025 a lot of watches tend to
1135. 34:55have maps at this price point so it is
1136. 34:57pretty big gap in any case the way this
1137. 34:59works here I'll open up both these just
1138. 35:01for fun so I'm going to go there I'm
1139. 35:03going to open up a hike there we go
1140. 35:05choose both yep no problem and then on
1141. 35:07the hike I'm going to hold the left hand
1142. 35:08button here to find the navigation so we
1143. 35:11go down navigation we're going to open
1144. 35:13that up I'm going to go to courses there
1145. 35:16we go courses and I'm going to find my
1146. 35:18hike from the other day I think I still
1147. 35:19got it in here Chile Island does this on
1148. 35:22this one here there we go Chile Island
  1149. 35:25this is about a 55k route that I did end
1150. 35:28up being 60k once I finish things up uh
1151. 35:31and I can then choose to look at the map
1152. 35:33on this and you're going to see this
  1153. 35:34breadcrumb style map you'll notice in
1154. 35:36general uh the solar is a little bit
1155. 35:38slower than the AMOLED there are some
  1156. 35:40cases where it's a lot slower like
1157. 35:41saving a long workout anything over an
  1158. 35:44hour actually it's a lot slower to save
1159. 35:45than the AMOLED is instant the solar
  1160. 35:47just takes forever there's simply
1161. 35:49different processing uh in that behind
1162. 35:51the scenes to get the battery if they
1163. 35:52need in this case I can zoom out like
  1164. 35:54this I can zoom in you'll notice I zoom
1165. 35:56out here you start to see the cities
1166. 35:59there uh so this is something that is
1167. 36:00new on the Instinct 3 Series which is
1168. 36:02the addition of cities so they put City
1169. 36:05dots on here just a DOT representing the
1170. 36:07city uh in this case that city is like
1171. 36:0920 km away from me roughly it's not
1172. 36:12super useful it's not really useful at
1173. 36:14all actually uh because around where I
1174. 36:16was there there are tons of little towns
1175. 36:18there and that would have been super
1176. 36:19useful like if if I needed an emergency
1177. 36:21to get to a town and my phone was dead
1178. 36:23or whatever the case is if I could see
1179. 36:25those towns nearby that'd be great but
1180. 36:26this is like legit big cities and
1181. 36:28there's gazillion towns that are much
  1182. 36:30much closer that'll been much more
1183. 36:31useful now I can zoom in and out but I
1184. 36:34can also tap this upper right hand
1185. 36:35button here and you see the little dots
1186. 36:37this allows me to then change if I want
1187. 36:38to go up or down I can tap again to go
1188. 36:42right or left this is where touchcreen
1189. 36:44would have been helpful especially on
  1190. 36:46the AMOLED side I don't I don't really
1191. 36:47understand that Garmin has touch screens
1192. 36:49for both MIP and AMOLED uh it just seems
1193. 36:51like a bit of a weird Gap there any case
1194. 36:54tapping back once real quick there we go
1195. 36:57if I to doe course sorry go down to uh
1196. 36:59elevation plot here you can see the
1197. 37:01elevation plot of this particular route
1198. 37:03this is in meters this time but uh
1199. 37:05you'll see basically the duration of
1200. 37:07this the elevation plot uh and the total
  1201. 37:09Ascent that I had so 1884 m in Ascent
1202. 37:12about 6,000 ft or so um and it basically
1203. 37:14started from the ocean and ended uh
1204. 37:16pretty much at the ocean I can go ahead
1205. 37:18and go back here there we go back once I
1206. 37:21can do this course right away I can also
1207. 37:23do the course in Reverse which is Handy
1208. 37:25uh in cases you just want to go
  1209. 37:27backwards on something so that's an
1210. 37:29option there once I'm ready to go though
1211. 37:31I just simply choose do course just like
1212. 37:33that uh and I'll go ahead and get that
1213. 37:34course loaded up again you might see
1214. 37:36kind of the loading time side by side on
  1215. 37:38this course also there's no limits
  1216. 37:40anymore on course durations from a
1217. 37:42course Point standpoint used to be a
1218. 37:44very legit problem in the older Instinct
1219. 37:46series and even older Garr watches to
1220. 37:48have very short course durations Garin
1221. 37:50got rid of those limits in the instin
1222. 37:51series about 15 months or so now ago uh
1223. 37:54the key thing to do though is to get a
1224. 37:55route into Garmin Connect the plat form
1225. 37:58uh so whether that's coming from Strava
1226. 38:00kud a GPX file anything don't try to put
1227. 38:02the GPX file directly on the watch just
1228. 38:04simply import it into garma connect
1229. 38:06that's beneficial for two reasons one
1230. 38:08it'll correct any elevation uh problems
1231. 38:10with that and a lot of platforms send
1232. 38:12bad elevation even Kut I find will often
1233. 38:14send bad elevation to mountainous areas
  1234. 38:16that's just not super accurate G's
1235. 38:18elevation data tends to be much much
1236. 38:20more accurate uh than Kut or even straa
  1237. 38:22so it'll automatically correct that the
1238. 38:24other thing allows you to do is to add
1239. 38:25way points which I love adding way
1240. 38:26points into so waypoints I can add on
  1241. 38:29garment connect I choose a point on the
  1242. 38:30map I give it a a Kon I give it a name
  1243. 38:34and then while I'm out they hiking it'll
1244. 38:36show in the up ahead list which
1245. 38:37basically means it tell me how far until
1246. 38:40that next Waypoint it list all my way
1247. 38:41points sequentially and how far along
1248. 38:44the trail so not as the bird flies but
1249. 38:46as the trail goes until that Waypoint
1250. 38:48when it comes to turn notifications uh
1251. 38:50the watch will automatically give you
1252. 38:51turn notification as you reach those
  1253. 38:53turns pretty straightforward will
  1254. 38:54basically about 50 m out while you're
1255. 38:56hiking say hey turn come coming up turn
1256. 38:57left or turn right you get a little
1257. 38:59chirp uh and you know to turn if you go
1258. 39:01off course you get an off course
  1259. 39:02notification off course has roughly 50 m
  1260. 39:05off course it'll give you notification
1261. 39:07but because there's no maps on this it
1262. 39:09won't route you back to the course it
1263. 39:10just simply says yo your course is over
1264. 39:12there go figure it out it's really as
1265. 39:14simple as that you also see where you
1266. 39:16are on that elevation profile over the
1267. 39:18course of the entire hike or Journey
1268. 39:20whatever it may be uh but you're not
1269. 39:21going to see per climb elevation details
1270. 39:23like you would in a phoenix series or
  1271. 39:254955 or 4965 with garmin's clim Pro this
1272. 39:29is what clim Pro looks like right there
1273. 39:30it automatically subdivides every single
1274. 39:32climb and descent up and tells you how
1275. 39:34far to the top both in height as well as
1276. 39:37distance uh as well as your average
1277. 39:39gradient remaining and you know your
1278. 39:40time and all that kind of fun stuff it's
1279. 39:42like an awesome awesome software feature
1280. 39:44if you spend a lot of time in the
1281. 39:45mountains but unfortunately it is not on
  1282. 39:46this watch because this watch doesn't
1283. 39:48have Maps so a bit of a bummer there
  1284. 39:50otherwise from a navigation standpoint
1285. 39:52it works just fine note that the routes
1286. 39:54as you can see on this map right here if
1287. 39:56I do side by side between a Phenix and
1288. 39:57Instinct series The Instinct series will
1289. 39:59kind of truncate some of the different
1290. 40:01curves and whatnot it wasn't really an
1291. 40:02issue out in the real world in terms of
1292. 40:05having some of that data being uh
1293. 40:06reduced if you will in terms of
1294. 40:08granularity uh but just note that that
1295. 40:09is the case now one thing that's cool on
1296. 40:11the Instinct 3 is the addition of
1297. 40:13garment share so I'm going to back up a
1298. 40:14bunch of here I'm just going to go back
1299. 40:15to back to the base of the beginning
1300. 40:17here right there we go and then I'm
1301. 40:18going to open up go down into the apps
1302. 40:21list or the sports list they're kind of
1303. 40:22one and the same in the new Garmin World
1304. 40:23here and I'm going to go down into
1305. 40:25Garmin share there we go right there
1306. 40:27what garment shair allows you to do is
1307. 40:28just send routes and things like uh
1308. 40:30waypoints and workouts and courses back
1309. 40:32and forth between watches without any
  1310. 40:34phone nearby that's useful because the
1311. 40:36Garmin Connect app on your phone
1312. 40:37requires internet now Garmin has another
1313. 40:39app called Garmin explore which allows
1314. 40:41you to get uh routes and whatnot from
1315. 40:44your phone into the watch without
  1316. 40:46internet so that's what I basically
1317. 40:48download those Maps ahead of time into
  1318. 40:50Garmin explore so I'm out hiking
1319. 40:52something comes up I need to change my
1320. 40:53mind or whatever the case is I can do
1321. 40:55that from the Garmin Explorer app but
1322. 40:56that still requires your phone but this
1323. 40:58here let's say you get to a trail head
  1324. 40:59your buddies got a watch they've got a
1325. 41:01compatible garment watch so anything
1326. 41:02made in the last 2 or 3 years roughly
1327. 41:04Garin share allows you to send things
1328. 41:06back and forth so in this case this
1329. 41:08one's already set up the amlet already
1330. 41:09set up for Garin share on this right
1331. 41:11hand side I'm going to go ahead and
1332. 41:12confirm this is like a brand new watch
1333. 41:14if you will there we
1334. 41:15go okay oky does perfect now this one's
1335. 41:19ready to sa and this one's also ready to
1336. 41:21go I'm going to go down and press to
1337. 41:22share something right there I'm going to
1338. 41:24share one of my courses I'm just going
  1339. 41:25to choose a course let's see what's
1340. 41:27something uh airport run home there we
1341. 41:29go and I have to share yep and now over
1342. 41:32here this one's ready to Reeve you can
  1343. 41:33see select a device you're going to send
  1344. 41:35it to Instinct 3 50 mm that's what this
1345. 41:37one is right there on this side here I'm
  1346. 41:39going to get it in a second I'll
1347. 41:40basically say hey are you sure this is
1348. 41:42what you want to receive it's going to
  1349. 41:43confirm this there we go Instinct 3 50
  1350. 41:45mm they're both Instinct 3 50 mm but
1351. 41:48solar you get the point right um over
  1352. 41:50there I choose to confirm this uh it'll
1353. 41:52usually confirm a key code back and
1354. 41:53forth or a pin code if you will there we
1355. 41:55go yep those two are confirmed no
1356. 41:57problem and then it'll send that over uh
1357. 42:00it doesn't take too long but of course
1358. 42:01does depend on the duration uh the file
1359. 42:04size effectively between these two
1360. 42:06things uh it is setting this via
1361. 42:07Bluetooth in the past garm had this
1362. 42:09feature on watches many many years ago
1363. 42:11and they took it away in the past it was
1364. 42:12via ant but now it's uh via Bluetooth
1365. 42:15and there we go sharing is complete uh
1366. 42:17at this point I could load this up in
1367. 42:19there I could also use father briefly it
1368. 42:21said share again if I have multiple
1369. 42:22people in the group I can share again I
1370. 42:24just wanted to kind of mention that it's
1371. 42:25a cool little feature that something
1372. 42:26that's new on the Instinct 3 okay so at
1373. 42:28this point let's talk about Garmin pay
1374. 42:30and then we'll talk about solar and wrap
1375. 42:31things up so Garmin pay is something
1376. 42:33they've added to the Instinct 3 Series
1377. 42:35is standard across the board pay
1378. 42:36essentially just NFC payments you can go
1379. 42:38ahead and load your credit card onto the
1380. 42:40watch uh and then you're good to go as I
  1381. 42:42mentioned it's now standard on all
1382. 42:43Instinct three watches versus in the
1383. 42:45past it was only certain addition the
1384. 42:46way you load your card is you first
1385. 42:47double check if your bank is supportive
  1386. 42:49there's roughly 1,600 Banks globally
1387. 42:51that are supported it is not just all
1388. 42:53Visa cards or all AMX cards Etc it's on
  1389. 42:55a per Bank stand point so it's it's
1390. 42:58quite the lift to deal with globally but
1391. 43:00uh you know if you're in the US all the
1392. 43:02major credit card issuers are on there
  1393. 43:04and if you're in other countries it's
1394. 43:05kind of hit or miss some countries is
1395. 43:06like boom we got everything some
  1396. 43:07countries it's just simply nothing uh
1397. 43:09Garmin has a list on the website with
1398. 43:11every single Bank organized by country
1399. 43:13once that's done you go into the Garmin
1400. 43:15conect mobile app and you choose to add
1401. 43:17a credit card uh to Garmin pay you'll
1402. 43:20run through this it takes like 60
  1403. 43:21seconds and you're done it's it's on
1404. 43:23your watch uh now to use it you will
1405. 43:25hold the upper left hand button right
1406. 43:26there for a second and you go and choose
1407. 43:28wallet right there and you're going to
1408. 43:31enter your passcode in I'm going enter
1409. 43:33it in secret then once you got the last
1410. 43:35digit here you'll see says hold near
1411. 43:38reader and it shows my credit card there
  1412. 43:39and you've got what is 20 or 30 seconds
1413. 43:41to do that tapy tap as you tapy tap it
1414. 43:44turns green and youve paid for something
1415. 43:46it's it's frankly as simple as that it
1416. 43:48is not complex it works great um it does
1417. 43:50not matter what the NFC Reader is uh I
1418. 43:53have had no problems with this globally
1419. 43:55it just works just fine okay so the last
1420. 43:58thing then to talk about is solar
1421. 43:59Edition bits uh so we're going to get
1422. 44:01rid of the out one and bring over my
1423. 44:03solar friends here this guy's been warm
1424. 44:05right now he's been sit in the sun over
1425. 44:06there the entire time uh now solar as I
1426. 44:09mentioned earlier on is only on the myip
1427. 44:10based display and the solar panels Chang
  1428. 44:13quite a bit on the Instinct 3 compared
1429. 44:14to the Instinct 2 the very first thing
1430. 44:16you're going to notice right away is a
1431. 44:18lack of that reddish kind of hue around
1432. 44:19the outside edge might be hard to see
1433. 44:21right there I'll put some other footage
1434. 44:22in if it's better to see there uh it is
1435. 44:24now purely black around the outside edge
1436. 44:26and much much more powerful um and so
1437. 44:29just for for kind of like understanding
1438. 44:30that these two watches have been side by
1439. 44:32side the entire day here and let's look
1440. 44:34at the solar uh gains that you've had
1441. 44:37701 Lux hours versus 517 Lux hours so
  1442. 44:42almost like 50% more powerful it's
1443. 44:44really really powerful in terms of what
1444. 44:45it's pulling in now we're getting ahead
1445. 44:47of ourselves just slightly here though
  1446. 44:48so let's back up here and we'll just
1447. 44:51stick with uh we'll just stick with one
1448. 44:53watch let make our life a little easier
  1449. 44:54right so on a solver watch a couple
1450. 44:56things one this is your sun icon in the
  1451. 44:58upper right hand corner there it's
  1452. 45:00divided up into I believe 10 chunks uh
1453. 45:02each chunk represents how much solar
  1454. 45:03intensity you're getting at that point
1455. 45:05in time put it in the sun it's going to
1456. 45:07go ahead and show more solar intensity
1457. 45:09take it out of the sun it's not going to
1458. 45:10show anything like right now there's no
1459. 45:11chunks when it's in full brightness Sun
1460. 45:13it'll be completely illuminated and say
  1461. 45:15hey it's it's now full brightness you
1462. 45:16can also see I've configured over there
1463. 45:18to show my solar gains low on the top
1464. 45:20right there now if I go down in this you
1465. 45:22can see that same little solar uh chart
1466. 45:24right there over the course of the day
1467. 45:25actually last 6 hours precise and here
1468. 45:27is the last 6 hours uh the clouds are
1469. 45:29starting to come in kind of behind me
1470. 45:31here and so the sun gains are going down
1471. 45:33slightly still 7001 hours slux hours is
1472. 45:36a lot of solar uh for this day I'm sure
  1473. 45:39this has gone up probably 20 25% in
1474. 45:41battery capacity over the course of the
1475. 45:43day so it's just been just sitting there
  1476. 45:45the entire day certainly if you're
1477. 45:46wearing though you're not going to quite
1478. 45:48get as much um but I go into all of
1479. 45:50those solar gains in my review in terms
1480. 45:52of what that looks like but in short in
1481. 45:54some scenarios I was burning less than
1482. 45:561% battery um over the course of 3 hours
1483. 45:59of riding outside in a sun where is only
1484. 46:01covered like 30% of the time so because
  1485. 46:03I was do a triangle and whatnot wasn't
1486. 46:05getting a ton of solar uh but my battery
1487. 46:08was just really really good in that GPS
1488. 46:10only configuration you can go down from
1489. 46:11here and you can see uh my daily average
  1490. 46:13you can see I just shy of 400 ,000 Lux
1491. 46:16hours per day which is pretty strong
1492. 46:18it's just been sitting out there every
1493. 46:19day for fun in the sun just see what it
1494. 46:20looks like in case of the Instinct 3
1495. 46:22it's got more categories now that have
1496. 46:24that unlimited power option uh based on
1497. 46:26how much Sun that you get and of course
  1498. 46:28Garin sets a minimum there roughly 3
1499. 46:30hours per day of sun it doesn't take
1500. 46:32Like Crazy Summer Sun like putting it at
1501. 46:34the whole time just you'll get those Lux
  1502. 46:36hours and just day-to-day uses without
  1503. 46:37any problem if it's a sunny day of
1504. 46:39course where it becomes even more
  1505. 46:40interesting is if you're not really
1506. 46:42using GPS but just want to use it as a
1507. 46:44smartwatch you can easily do that in a
1508. 46:46sunnier environment and have unlimited
1509. 46:48power no problems now in the past G
1510. 46:50would actually show you anlimited
  1511. 46:51battery icon here's a picture of it
1512. 46:53right there on the 2x uh but that
1513. 46:54doesn't seem to be working as of this
  1514. 46:56moment on the Instinct 3 I suspect I'll
1515. 46:58get that soon because I've had more than
1516. 47:00enough battery to be in limited power
1517. 47:02but hasn't quite happened yet but anyway
1518. 47:04it's kind of a cool little thing to see
1519. 47:05in watch when you've like unlocked that
  1520. 47:07achievement speaking of unlocking
1521. 47:09achievements that is it you have got to
1522. 47:10the end of this video uh that's all I've
1523. 47:12got for you if you did find this video
1524. 47:14interesting or useful if you could just
1525. 47:15go ahead and whack that like button
  1526. 47:16bottom there Orit subscribe it'd really
1527. 47:18mean a lot with that have a good one
