  1. 0:00but let's first focus on the first car
  2. 0:01distract the interesting is what the
  3. 0:05reporters are always looking for we need
  4. 0:08to know what performers consider
  5. 0:09interesting here to good news because
  6. 0:11reporters of storytellers what they
  7. 0:13consider interesting is what is
  8. 0:15interesting in all forms of storytelling
  9. 0:16fiction nonfiction movies television
  10. 0:19shows novels theater there are five
  11. 0:23things that make for interesting story
  12. 0:25telling reporters or constant was
  13. 0:27looking for keeping record and that is
  14. 0:32because for thousands of years ghost
  15. 0:34story Tony has been all about confidence
  16. 0:36and when we look at what's on television
  17. 0:39today it's all conflict all the time
  18. 0:42whether it's dancing with the stars
  19. 0:45which is kind of life or the Superbowl
  20. 0:48the most-watched television program in
  21. 0:50the world which is conflict or the
  22. 0:53Academy Awards which is conflict they're
  23. 0:55given the winners are going to be losers
  24. 0:57and someone from the microphones going
  25. 0:59to say so really a bunch of horrible
  26. 1:01things about someone and that will make
  27. 1:02even more interesting and we hear the
  28. 1:05kids every episode of spongebob
  29. 1:09squarepants as confident we live in
  30. 1:13world war conflict drives coverage and
  31. 1:17that actually explains a lot there's a
  32. 1:21reporter at The New York Times who was
  33. 1:22accused of being biased against the
  34. 1:25person she covered that person was a
  35. 1:27president in no time the United States
  36. 1:29she thought it was weird that she was
  37. 1:31accused to be biased against him because
  38. 1:33she didn't the genes to be biased
  39. 1:34against the prior president as well I
  40. 1:36give me biased means both and such
  41. 1:37different guys so she sat down to look
  42. 1:40very very interesting essay about her
  43. 1:42own experience and she confessed most
  44. 1:45reporters I know are not passionately
  45. 1:46political left or right we do have an
  46. 1:49ideology and that is a love of conflict
  47. 1:52meaning we have a bias for stories about
  48. 1:56yes personality fuse but also for the
  49. 2:00speeds over policy what I love about her
  50. 2:02confession is the word yes because it
  51. 2:06suggests some grudging acknowledgment
  52. 2:09even have been in our times the policy
  53. 2:13you will be pushed back in favor of the
  54. 2:17personality this explains Donald Trump
  55. 2:23this explains why for six months it's
  56. 2:28been all trunk all the time because he's
  57. 2:32a former reality television conflict
  58. 2:35show star who know who's had a good
  59. 2:38television coverage and he pulls no
  60. 2:40punches here are among the more things
  61. 2:43he has said about megyn kelly because
  62. 2:46you you are she did push you was a lot
  63. 2:50of people who was it was human mating
  64. 2:51tell me well I just know we up there at
  65. 2:55the journal crab no respect my room if
  66. 2:57she's very good at I think she's highly
  67. 2:58overrated but when I came out there you
  68. 3:00know what am i doing I'm not getting
  69. 3:02paid for this I go out there and you
  70. 3:04know they start a list up I'll review it
  71. 3:07in tonight then and you know I didn't
  72. 3:09know there would be 24 million people i
  73. 3:10think if i know it's gonna be a big
  74. 3:11crowd with this I guess the class think
  75. 3:13it rain over the waiting with machine so
  76. 3:16i am sure she she sketched out and she
  77. 3:20thought this would be all such a
  78. 3:21ridiculous questions and you know you
  79. 3:23can see there was blood coming out of
  80. 3:25her eyes coming out of her wherever she
  81. 3:29was in my opinion she was off eight so
  82. 3:36it was all Trump against megyn kelly for
  83. 3:39a week and then he has an interaction
  84. 3:42for the journalist who's known as the
  85. 3:45Walter Cronkite of spanish-language
  86. 3:47media kid may sit down you weren't
  87. 3:54called sit down sit down sit down go
  88. 3:58ahead now you know you have been called
  89. 4:02go back to Univision go ahead sit down
  90. 4:17please you weren't called yes good idea
  91. 4:32he's being screwed out of the Rope he
  92. 4:34was asking the question and donal from
  93. 4:36guided mall ok remove revealing most
  94. 4:40well I the personal bodyguards contra
  95. 4:43ellos both our journalists how would he
  96. 4:46speak about a war hero a beautiful day
  97. 4:52with incredible people that were
  98. 4:54wonderful great Americans i will tell
  99. 4:57you john mccain goes avoid Trump fix my
  100. 5:01life difficult he had 15,000 crazies
  101. 5:04show up crazies he called them all crazy
  102. 5:06I said think we're crazy they would
  103. 5:08great American sees people if you were
  104. 5:10to see these people you I know what
  105. 5:12craziness I know all about praises these
  106. 5:15were crazy so he insulted me and he
  107. 5:18insulted everybody in that book and I
  108. 5:19said somebody should run against John
  109. 5:21McCain who has been you know am i
  110. 5:24finding out so hot and I supported I
  111. 5:26supported the president I raised a
  112. 5:29million dollars folks a lot of money I
  113. 5:30supported him he lost another step but
  114. 5:33you know lost Sunday like
  115. 5:35cuz I don't like users that's crying
  116. 5:39crying funded it though he hit me is
  117. 5:41that war hero he's a war he's the boy
  118. 5:45here at this news captured I like people
  119. 5:47I work at you okay Julia so then it's a
  120. 5:52week of all Charles versus McCain all
  121. 5:55the time and it is continuing in is now
  122. 5:57you can either go nowhere watch last
  123. 5:59month today he's doing this on purpose
  124. 6:05he's doing it for his purpose I don't
  125. 6:08endorse it I don't condemn it I don't
  126. 6:12phrase it I simply describe it it's not
  127. 6:17third meaning you ought to be that horse
  128. 6:19falls on purpose but if you want to be
  129. 6:24covered you need to be as intention you
  130. 6:28need to be as disciplined as far the
  131. 6:31challenge comes when you don't want
  132. 6:36something else too and I mentioned that
  133. 6:40the hardest part is resisting the
  134. 6:43temptation of being more interesting in
  135. 6:45you attend let's look at how hard it is
  136. 6:47to resist the temptation of saying
  137. 6:50something for interested in you again
  138. 6:53we're going to look at a defining moment
  139. 6:56in the presidency of President Barack
  140. 6:58Obama and that is the most important
  141. 7:00public statement he is going to bank in
  142. 7:02his career so far and that is the launch
  143. 7:05of his most important legislative
  144. 7:07initiative it is in july two thousand
  145. 7:10ninety six months into his presidency in
  146. 7:12mid-july he launches health care reform
  147. 7:16and he has a very specific strike he
  148. 7:19knows it's going to be opposed bitterly
  149. 7:21by his opponents so he needs to dominate
  150. 7:24the public discussion he needs to build
  151. 7:27overwhelming to mayhem from the general
  152. 7:30public for health care reform
  153. 7:33so he decides to start big he decides to
  154. 7:36start with a national address to the
  155. 7:37ardent people in primetime television
  156. 7:40making the case directly to them and
  157. 7:42then taking questions from movies so he
  158. 7:45speaks from the ceremonial East Room of
  159. 7:47the White House the same room where he
  160. 7:49later described how the United States
  161. 7:52had killed Osama bin Laden this is the
  162. 7:55room reserved for really important stuff
  163. 7:57and from the podium in that room who
  164. 7:59made the case he made forcefully it was
  165. 8:02clear he was compelling and after 25
  166. 8:06millions into question to the news media
  167. 8:07and all the questions were brutal and he
  168. 8:10handled them brilliantly after 58
  169. 8:13minutes was very clear he we have
  170. 8:14fulfilled is the purpose is fulfilled
  171. 8:17his mission it's going to be all
  172. 8:18healthcare all the time it's been
  173. 8:21brilliantly done and then it takes one
  174. 8:23more question the question from a
  175. 8:25reporter who normally doesn't ask
  176. 8:26questions of White House press
  177. 8:27conferences because she comes from a
  178. 8:29newspaper is Chicago sometimes that
  179. 8:32typically doesn't ask questions at
  180. 8:33presidential news conferences she even
  181. 8:36sweet covered Barack Obama he was a
  182. 8:38local state senator she covered in as a
  183. 8:40duet senator she moved to Washington to
  184. 8:42cover him in the White House and she has
  185. 8:44to question unrelated to health care in
  186. 8:46the middle of the 58th minute of a
  187. 8:4860-minute person and she asks a question
  188. 8:51about the arrest several days earlier of
  189. 8:54a friend of the President harvard
  190. 8:57university professor and scholar of the
  191. 9:00african-american experience professor
  192. 9:03Henry Louis Gates who has a public
  193. 9:05television show on race in America and
  194. 9:07who coming home late at night from afar
  195. 9:09Madrid for his PBS show who's tired with
  196. 9:12jet lag he had a little bit of
  197. 9:14difficulty getting into his house cuz
  198. 9:16the lock was a little jammed but he
  199. 9:18finally got in but somebody driving by I
  200. 9:20saw suspicious person trying to get into
  201. 9:22a nice house Ingrid Massachusetts and
  202. 9:24call the cops the cops arrived he was
  203. 9:27already in the towel so they entered the
  204. 9:29house they demanded to see his ID he
  205. 9:31knows rights he said I don't
  206. 9:32my ID so they put in handcuffs into the
  207. 9:35jail and it was all professor gates all
  208. 9:38the time on the news the day of the
  209. 9:41presidential press conference so here's
  210. 9:43one sweets question to the President and
  211. 9:45I masks on our piano to respond as if
  212. 9:48you the President of the United States
  213. 9:52Thank You mr. president recently
  214. 9:55professor inventory skate shooter was
  215. 9:57arrested and his home in Cambridge what
  216. 10:00does minutes can save you and what does
  217. 10:02it save our race relations in America
  218. 10:04what does that incident say to you and
  219. 10:07what does it say about race relations in
  220. 10:09America mr. president
  221. 10:19do you wish to talk about that you wish
  222. 10:26to do it in the minute and a half you
  223. 10:28have left when you've made the case to
  224. 10:30the American people about hope so how do
  225. 10:33you take that a question sir how to take
  226. 10:37that question sir and in the meantime
  227. 10:49let's make sure everybody gets out here
  228. 10:51oh he a perfectly fine cloth that would
  229. 10:55be a perfectly fine response that is not
  230. 10:56another prisoner fine so let's see how
  231. 10:59the president responded as and
  232. 11:00truthfully by the most influential
  233. 11:02political commentator on television
  234. 11:04here's the questionnaires air for
  235. 11:05response recently professor in before
  236. 11:08skates chew toys rested and his home in
  237. 11:10Cambridge what does manage to save you
  238. 11:13and what does it say about race
  239. 11:14relations
  240. 11:31I don't know been there and seeing all
  241. 11:40the facts one roll race played event but
  242. 11:43i think it's courtesy not to complicate
  243. 11:50the cambridge police acted stupidly
  244. 12:04oh I wasn't at the press conference last
  245. 12:13night I also don't have all five I don't
  246. 12:16think it's hard to say that Obama handle
  247. 12:17that question oh what's the word I'm
  248. 12:19looking for as soon as President Obama
  249. 12:28says the Cambridge police acted stupidly
  250. 12:31everything change it was not all health
  251. 12:34care all time colonel it was almost
  252. 12:36president insulted the police the
  253. 12:39president said the police are stupid is
  254. 12:42the president will polish eyes to the
  255. 12:43police healthcare surrogates went on the
  256. 12:47sunday shows to talk about the health
  257. 12:49care reform plan they kept being asked
  258. 12:51but is the president apologized to the
  259. 12:53game release it was all conflict all
  260. 12:55no out there on the 8th day the
  261. 13:00president knew he needed to change in
  262. 13:01the store so we needed a story of
  263. 13:03reconciliation in order to get back to
  264. 13:06health care so he invited the professor
  265. 13:09and the cop to come down to the White
  266. 13:12House to have up here because that's
  267. 13:15what men do and again the dress runoff
  268. 13:21actual they called the beer summit at
  269. 13:25the White House they didn't ask to be al
  270. 13:28the wagons a period what hearings ok
  271. 13:32also the word provide Amir that we
  272. 13:35understand each of the people there
  273. 13:36prefers the drank so the professor is
  274. 13:39favorite beers right strike from Jamaica
  275. 13:41we're going to have rats trifle tree
  276. 13:43understand that the police officer
  277. 13:45prefers blue moon slice of orange will
  278. 13:47that for you know the president is a man
  279. 13:50of people he drinks bud light and the
  280. 13:52vice president doesn't drink alcohol but
  281. 13:54will have for him a beer like malt
  282. 13:56beverage called caliber and they were
  283. 14:00going to have their gathering the Rose
  284. 14:02Garden in the run-up to the beer summit
  285. 14:05The Wall Street Journal
  286. 14:06publishes peace prominently a newspaper
  287. 14:09American Brewers are hopping mad
  288. 14:16brouhaha at the White House because not
  289. 14:21one of those beers is made by marking
  290. 14:23hell oh and they can't agree on was very
  291. 14:26heater so it wasn't a reconciliation
  292. 14:28served as a conflict story again and it
  293. 14:30were main conflict after conflict after
  294. 14:32conflict the senate recess the tea party
  295. 14:35disrupted town hall meetings it was all
  296. 14:37come the president comes back in
  297. 14:39September who needs to get control of
  298. 14:41the news cycle holds a joint session of
  299. 14:43Congress and someone in the back of the
  300. 14:45room screams you lie and that becomes
  301. 14:48the story the president never happens
  302. 14:50the president never had public opinion
  303. 14:53his opponents ran circles around him and
  304. 14:56what ultimately passed is the Affordable
  305. 14:58Care Act the mark was such a watered
  306. 15:00down version with so many things taken
  307. 15:02out and so many delays in implementation
  308. 15:04day in July it would have been
  309. 15:06considered earlier but it's all I can
  310. 15:08get some in declared victory the
  311. 15:11president never has been recycled
  312. 15:14because he failed to respond the way the
  313. 15:16general rivers money could easily have
  314. 15:19done that it would be perfectly fine
  315. 15:20let's look at how conflict now works you
  316. 15:25guys are the subject of cultural stories
  317. 15:26all this week yes you are marine slams
  318. 15:31Eggman on facebook great story not
  319. 15:37particularly helpful general this goes
  320. 15:44in nature there let's take a look at how
  321. 15:48this works in your line of work who is
  322. 15:52an operation desert so ok keep me on
  323. 15:55occasion Iraq invaded Kuwait on the
  324. 15:58first of august of 1990 the US and its
  325. 16:01allies built a military presence of
  326. 16:04saudi arabia in the Gulf for the balance
  327. 16:06of the fall and early winter they got
  328. 16:08United Nations resolutions evaluation
  329. 16:11Senate resolutions in early January an
  330. 16:14air campaign began going on for about
  331. 16:16six weeks at the end of februari aground
  332. 16:18campaign began including a lot of
  333. 16:20Radiance after 100 hours of fighting the
  334. 16:24US declared that it did accomplish its
  335. 16:26mission and suspend an offensive
  336. 16:28operations that was all the point seven
  337. 16:30februari 2028 days later the CENTCOM
  338. 16:35commander who was in charge of that get
  339. 16:38a loan Schwarzkopf SAT for an interview
  340. 16:41with a British journalist David Frost
  341. 16:43later sir david frost on a program
  342. 16:46called conversations with David Frost
  343. 16:47was an hour-long conversation really
  344. 16:49concerned a half minutes I I'm going to
  345. 16:52ask you to predict the story have you
  346. 16:56consulted about the susan happy oh you
  347. 17:00know chillin power my talk to each other
  348. 17:02several times a day every day on and
  349. 17:04where i was keeping you very closely
  350. 17:06advised on what was going on here he was
  351. 17:09keeping me very closely advised as to
  352. 17:11what was going on in Washington and of
  353. 17:14course mom totally he was keeping the
  354. 17:16Secretary of Defense and the president
  355. 17:18very closely advised on daily basis and
  356. 17:21so months has after the third day as I
  357. 17:26say we knew we had to learn it was we
  358. 17:29had closed the back door the bridges
  359. 17:32across the tigris-euphrates were out we
  360. 17:35had cut highway 8 and ran up the
  361. 17:36tigris-euphrates rally on this side of
  362. 17:38the river there was no way out for I
  363. 17:40mean their words they were goes with
  364. 17:42baasma door a few bridges born
  365. 17:44father was but to the hilt all that
  366. 17:47there was nothing else and and and it
  367. 17:48was literally about to become a battle
  368. 17:51can I embattled annihilation so we were
  369. 17:55we were driving into their flank now
  370. 17:57with two cores completely intact and
  371. 17:59they were in complete route and I
  372. 18:01referred that situation to the power and
  373. 18:04and and he and I discussed how we
  374. 18:08accomplished our military objectives
  375. 18:10that campaign objectives and the answer
  376. 18:12was yes you know there was no question
  377. 18:14about the fact that the campaign
  378. 18:16objectives that we established ourselves
  379. 18:17were accomplished the enemy was being
  380. 18:20kicked out of Kuwait was going to be
  381. 18:22gone from Kuwait we have destroyed the
  382. 18:24Republican Guard as a militarily
  383. 18:26affections had him totally destroyed it
  384. 18:28i mean in the sense etude Masseria
  385. 18:30wanted to carry on and destroy it a bit
  386. 18:32more well yeah it having been surprised
  387. 18:34no more what are you defined the word
  388. 18:35destroyed the Republican Guard was a
  389. 18:37military and militarily in effective
  390. 18:39force and we have a great damage on them
  391. 18:42and they have been rounded now I
  392. 18:44obviously you know if you didn't destroy
  393. 18:46them to the very last tank and again
  394. 18:49this is this is a point that I think may
  395. 18:51be lost from a lot of people that was a
  396. 18:53very courageous decision on the part of
  397. 18:54the president also stopped the office no
  398. 18:58we didn't declare a ceasefire what we
  399. 18:59did is we suspended offensive operations
  400. 19:02frankly my recommendation had been you
  401. 19:05know continue the March I mean we had to
  402. 19:07monitor in a row and we could have
  403. 19:09continued to feel great destruction
  404. 19:12autumn because completely closed the
  405. 19:13door and make it in fact about all the
  406. 19:15nomination and the president you know
  407. 19:17made the decision that you know that we
  408. 19:20should stop at a given time at a given
  409. 19:21place that did leave some escape routes
  410. 19:24open for them to get back out and I
  411. 19:26think it was a very humane decision a
  412. 19:28very crazy
  413. 19:29also cuz it you know as well as ones
  414. 19:31that historians are going to second
  415. 19:33guess you know forever right you know
  416. 19:35why didn't we go for one more day versus
  417. 19:37why did we stop when we did when we have
  418. 19:38to believe route it we're already
  419. 19:40getting the question as well through it
  420. 19:42they would want their as much force that
  421. 19:43they said they were because you've only
  422. 19:45captured X number you've only got my
  423. 19:48number of estimated dead and there for
  424. 19:52you it doesn't compute well they were
  425. 19:53obviously a lot of people to escape who
  426. 19:55with them escaped with the decision had
  427. 19:57been made him to stop us regular that
  428. 19:59time but again I think that was a very
  429. 20:01courageous does there's not a hard
  430. 20:02question how did he do it keep on
  431. 20:08talking and I learned from a ring of the
  432. 20:10day never missed the opportunity of your
  433. 20:12mouth shut how was didn't you good bad
  434. 20:21these are the president for crazies
  435. 20:30continue our attorney we have a cloud
  436. 20:33God make the choices I just advise
  437. 20:36what's the story that's the equivalent
  438. 20:45of a missile what does the news we can
  439. 20:50you do in pursuit of that story what's
  440. 20:54the story the next day so you're the
  441. 20:59journalist kernels and your starting
  442. 21:02point is the president doesn't listen to
  443. 21:03generals how can you make the story or
  444. 21:05injures you can call the present or at
  445. 21:09least his bao and new you ask doesn't
  446. 21:12consider listen to James or why didn't
  447. 21:19the president listen to general
  448. 21:21Schwarzkopf see the difference that
  449. 21:23question gets the conflict response the
  450. 21:27piano ask the present president said
  451. 21:29this will you go out there you go out
  452. 21:33there and you tell him the same each
  453. 21:35other to suggest these words first of
  454. 21:36all he never told me that second of all
  455. 21:39you shouldn't
  456. 21:40David Frost bad third of all he's in big
  457. 21:43trouble for telling you across that you
  458. 21:45go down SPM polluting briskly is it yes
  459. 21:50sir but out and call back to the news
  460. 21:52media in the press room of the white
  461. 21:54house and that's why I'm sorry is mush
  462. 21:58and rebuke at schwarzkopf four truths
  463. 22:00remark move to silence officers
  464. 22:04officials robot commanders assertion
  465. 22:06that you wanted to continue the war
  466. 22:08great story career-defining and career
  467. 22:13limiting moment for general Schwarzkopf
  468. 22:16that split earlier times what about the
  469. 22:19other places Washington Post bush-cheney
  470. 22:21whose few general one and defining Los
  471. 22:25Angeles Times has two stories the first
  472. 22:27is Schwarzkopf says note for a router
  473. 22:29Meraki forces would wish chose to all
  474. 22:31for the second chaining bush the speech
  475. 22:33was golfing on anything or my favorite
  476. 22:37bush Norman didn't say we should keep
  477. 22:41store men
  478. 22:44at the time the story appeared congress
  479. 22:48was considering reviving the fence
  480. 22:50daughter for general Schwarzkopf they
  481. 22:53stopped considering that we're in
  482. 22:55astoria here this was a career-defining
  483. 22:59career limiting interview it is why
  484. 23:04honking never conducted one of those the
  485. 23:08first scene is uncut the reporters were
  486. 23:11conflict whatever they can the second
  487. 23:13scene is contradiction conflict is to
  488. 23:16parties and disputes and reporters would
  489. 23:18love to have that in every story again
  490. 23:20instead most stories are populated by
  491. 23:24contradiction that is the juxtaposition
  492. 23:26of things that most will go together or
  493. 23:29that are contrary to each other so for
  494. 23:32example my favorite headline in the New
  495. 23:35York Times was a miracle it was an
  496. 23:38entire across the front page headline
  497. 23:40kind of headlining the reserve to go to
  498. 23:42war it was over two stories that had
  499. 23:44nothing to do with each other but it was
  500. 23:47the juxtaposition of fortunes Brian
  501. 23:50Williams suspended at no point in his
  502. 23:52career Jon Stewart to retire at high
  503. 23:55point it was the juxtaposition of low
  504. 23:57point high points that made it
  505. 23:59irresistible to the newer times they put
  506. 24:02a headline across the entire front page
  507. 24:05there's a museum of news in Washington
  508. 24:08if you haven't visited you should I went
  509. 24:10for three hours I saved for three days
  510. 24:11it's reckless when you walk into the
  511. 24:14museum and bed it into the plaster in
  512. 24:18the wall is the explanation for the one
  513. 24:20famous headline an American Journal the
  514. 24:23most famous headline took place in 1890s
  515. 24:25in the newspaper called the New York
  516. 24:27world and the headline lavas man bites
  517. 24:30dog man bites dog is the most frequent
  518. 24:35headline American journalism you see all
  519. 24:37over the place in any newspaper Google
  520. 24:40man bites dog you'll find dozens of
  521. 24:41stories just from the last month when
  522. 24:44you walk into the museum they explain it
  523. 24:46in their walk my dog bites man has
  524. 24:48news if a man bites a dog that is news
  525. 24:51that is contradiction in the form of
  526. 24:54role reversal reporters a lot of
  527. 24:56reversal stories my favorite role
  528. 24:59reversal story involving the Marines
  529. 25:01took place after the Indonesian
  530. 25:03earthquake and tsunami in an environment
  531. 25:06where the world news media was writing
  532. 25:08that the United States is at war against
  533. 25:09Islam and then there were stories and
  534. 25:12photographs of Marines and Navy coming
  535. 25:15ashore in Malaysia which is a
  536. 25:18predominantly Muslim country and
  537. 25:19delivering relief food medicine water
  538. 25:23shattering and the global media would
  539. 25:26wrote the globe reversal story the
  540. 25:29Marines in you would expect to be
  541. 25:30someone to be afraid of are actually
  542. 25:33helping our people recover from this
  543. 25:35horrible thing that's a great story
  544. 25:39anything is contrary to the conventional
  545. 25:41wisdom has backlog anything they come
  546. 25:44found expectation any reversal of
  547. 25:46fortune or approach or strategy or path
  548. 25:49saying the opposite of looking said
  549. 25:51before doing the opposite when she said
  550. 25:53you do all of those are really
  551. 25:55interesting the contradictions President
  552. 25:57Obama I wasn't there and I don't have
  553. 25:59all the facts but maybe hate stupidly is
  554. 26:02contradiction here's one of my favorite
  555. 26:07too many responses about you guys in
  556. 26:092002 the US military with kicking doors
  557. 26:11and 2017 with military and Afghan police
  558. 26:14knock on doors and has to be invited in
  559. 26:17that's a reversal of approach we're out
  560. 26:21of the concentrate troops in large
  561. 26:22basins troops are now dispersed into the
  562. 26:24community that's a reversal of approach
  563. 26:26that by itself is intrusive in life
  564. 26:29sweets Washington Post as Marines take
  565. 26:31the heat the army states quiet that's
  566. 26:34two different paths by two different
  567. 26:36services that's contradiction my
  568. 26:40favorite conquer disorder in the new
  569. 26:42york times volume only use a journalist
  570. 26:44november 10 you know what day that is
  571. 26:47Captain James nigga's face another
  572. 26:49platoon of these ratings is stood in the
  573. 26:51fire which are beautiful
  574. 26:53we waited hungry weapons slung across
  575. 26:55their chest and bats so what comes next
  576. 26:58a birthday cake just how could you
  577. 27:02expect it at sea was on the table one
  578. 27:04piece had been cut out by a bayonet that
  579. 27:06is not typically the purpose of the
  580. 27:08bayonet the captain 37 and all the
  581. 27:11Saline right company he commands and
  582. 27:12just given a piece of the boot soon Jung
  583. 27:14is for being black purple he gave the
  584. 27:16gal who is 23 to the page 231 years that
  585. 27:21happens seven tradition it's what makes
  586. 27:24us different prediction we're not like
  587. 27:26other clothes it's what sets us apart
  588. 27:29and then final confirmation agree we're
  589. 27:32celebrating c-130 birthday on Friday an
  590. 27:34event passes with little notice outside
  591. 27:36it sincerely right so is an essential
  592. 27:38ritual in a contradiction straight story
  593. 27:42really good for the movies my favorite
  594. 27:46quote of the ring google it you always
  595. 27:48find it it's from First Lady Eleanor
  596. 27:51Roosevelt for men she would five and i
  597. 27:53want you to notice she speaks in
  598. 27:54absolutes the Marines have the clearest
  599. 27:58bodies and the silting spine the highest
  600. 28:04morale and the lowest morals of any
  601. 28:09group i ever known and she concludes
  602. 28:15with thank God for the United States a
  603. 28:18miracle Google Marine Corps cooks
  604. 28:22that'll be on the top of the list it
  605. 28:24continues to be slowed third C word is
  606. 28:28controversy anything that's already in
  607. 28:29the news professor eats as risk was
  608. 28:31already in the news you're going to talk
  609. 28:33about things that are already news
  610. 28:36before C word is colorful language
  611. 28:39colorful language is words that are
  612. 28:41sharp and if he acted vivid and
  613. 28:44memorable the Cambridge police acted
  614. 28:47stupidly it's a really big missile is
  615. 28:51really colorful and trick / sins
  616. 28:54you know we have them around we could
  617. 28:56inflict a great damage of all really
  618. 28:58colorful language what's the president
  619. 29:00made the decision to stop at a given
  620. 29:01time in getting these on the skate
  621. 29:03brunch so if you have something stories
  622. 29:04are going to sec to get all of that
  623. 29:06wildly colorful Roman stone profiled in
  624. 29:13general and the piece begins as the
  625. 29:17four-star general who now has to be not
  626. 29:20only a warrior but also a statement
  627. 29:21statesman he has to put on
  628. 29:24looking--we're to a black-tie diplomatic
  629. 29:27reception it's in Paris and the piece
  630. 29:30begins with colorful language spoken by
  631. 29:32the general speaking to his aid how'd I
  632. 29:36get screw them to go into this dinner
  633. 29:39first paragraph of the Rolling Stone
  634. 29:41these aids response dinner comes with a
  635. 29:46job sir the general then made sent
  636. 29:50obscene gesture that I will not make in
  637. 29:52front of you and says hey Charlie does
  638. 29:55this come with the position and this
  639. 30:00guru is everywhere and later in these
  640. 30:03there is conflict General Staff of the
  641. 30:05White House and vice president that
  642. 30:07ambassador at the supposed leadership
  643. 30:09and within 24 hours the general is
  644. 30:12something to the White House in the
  645. 30:13ability to distract another career
  646. 30:16defining career limiting moment
  647. 30:21somebody's at like 04 put in general in
  648. 30:24that position but also by the general
  649. 30:26for saying that and and that is another
  650. 30:31important consideration I will I will in
  651. 30:35fact concur back having said that it is
  652. 30:38my earnest hope that you never admit one
  653. 30:40of those so now the file c is a cast of
  654. 30:45characters runaway generally is a
  655. 30:48character that he had said other things
  656. 30:49he might not have gotten into the same
  657. 30:53I'm sorry every time they're getting
  658. 30:57pounded out there's a profound comedy
  659. 30:58he's a character in addition to being
  660. 31:00unique and he's portrayed as a character
  661. 31:04in this instance very very much in the
  662. 31:06instance of general McChrystal the
  663. 31:08character he played was the runaway gem
  664. 31:13let's look at our friend general
  665. 31:15shortcut again we're going to go back in
  666. 31:18time we're going to go back 20 in games
  667. 31:20we're going to go back to the last day
  668. 31:22of the fight it's very clear that the
  669. 31:24fighting it smells better than anyone
  670. 31:25expected it's very clear than a matter
  671. 31:27of hours we will over complished our
  672. 31:29objectives it's just before the general
  673. 31:32gets the call from chairman of Joint
  674. 31:34Chiefs calling out asking everyone yet
  675. 31:37it's clear we're going to win so the
  676. 31:40press are the general is preemptively
  677. 31:42briefing the press corps about the
  678. 31:44victory that is yet to happen it's an
  679. 31:46hour-long debriefing I'm gonna play only
  680. 31:47to Athens I'm gonna ask you to predict
  681. 31:50the sword all I'm back in about are you
  682. 31:55still a bombing and northern Iraq and if
  683. 31:57you are what's the purpose of them ah
  684. 32:00yes I'm sorry let's be achieved now no
  685. 32:07but Kelly prefers the weeks exactly the
  686. 32:09same thing we're trying to achieve
  687. 32:10before okay the war is not over your
  688. 32:13belly remember people are still dying
  689. 32:14out there okay and those people that are
  690. 32:17dying and my troops and I'm going to
  691. 32:19continue to protect those troops in
  692. 32:21every way I pop I can and tell us the
  693. 32:23war is over that's all right finally
  694. 32:27eating this up in God and eloquent
  695. 32:29instructed you blew your troops out of
  696. 32:31you brought hundreds Camino Mike and
  697. 32:33Sulley that's not my decision to make
  698. 32:35absolutely very quickly the Special
  699. 32:38Operations folks could you tell us what
  700. 32:40their role was we don't like to talk a
  701. 32:43lot about what the Special Operations
  702. 32:45though it is you're going you're well
  703. 32:46aware but in this case what
  704. 32:48may discover some of the things I did
  705. 32:49first of all with every single Arab unit
  706. 32:53has been in denial we had special forces
  707. 32:56cook food the job of the special forces
  708. 32:59with the travel and live right down to
  709. 33:00the tire level with all those people to
  710. 33:02make sure that they could act as
  711. 33:04communicators with friendlies
  712. 33:06english-speaking units upon their planks
  713. 33:08and they could also call in air strikes
  714. 33:10as necessary they could coordinate
  715. 33:12helicopter spraying to that's one thing
  716. 33:13that's why the principal role that they
  717. 33:16play with a very very portable secondly
  718. 33:18they did a great job in strategic
  719. 33:20reconnaissance for us thirdly the
  720. 33:22special forces were one hundred percent
  721. 33:24in charge of the combat search and
  722. 33:26rescue and that's a tough mission on a
  723. 33:28poly get shot down out there in the
  724. 33:30middle of nowhere surrounded by the
  725. 33:32enemy and your approach that are
  726. 33:33required to go in and go a firm that is
  727. 33:35a very tough mission and that was one of
  728. 33:36our mission and finally they also did
  729. 33:38some direct-action missions period I ask
  730. 33:41you two questions first did you think
  731. 33:43that this would turn out I realize a
  732. 33:46great deal of strategy and finding went
  733. 33:47into it but when it took place do you
  734. 33:49think this would turn out to be such an
  735. 33:51easy cakewalk as it seems and and
  736. 33:53secondly what are your impressions of
  737. 33:55Saddam Hussein as a military strategist
  738. 34:02first of all if we thought it would have
  739. 34:04been such an easy hazy bike we
  740. 34:07definitely would not have stocks 60 days
  741. 34:08with the surprise of these walkways so
  742. 34:10as I told electoral for very long time
  743. 34:13it is very very important for military
  744. 34:16commander II never know so where they
  745. 34:17capabilities of the timing and when
  746. 34:19you're facing an enemy that is over
  747. 34:20500,000 strong as a reputation they data
  748. 34:23fighting great years being common garden
  749. 34:25deference and the number of tanks and
  750. 34:27the type of equipment they you don't
  751. 34:29assume away anything so we certainly did
  752. 34:31not expect it to go this way as far as
  753. 34:33Saints being a great military strategist
  754. 34:36is neither a strategist nor indeed
  755. 34:41school to the operational arts nor India
  756. 34:44tactician nor is He of general nor
  757. 34:48disease assault other than that is a
  758. 34:50great military man what you know couple
  759. 34:56hours literally little war that's a good
  760. 34:59store there's a better story the one
  761. 35:03makes it on the evening news what gets
  762. 35:06people to read the newspaper the next
  763. 35:07day what's the story here's the
  764. 35:14Washington Post front page that story
  765. 35:17about strategy is a story about shorten
  766. 35:20it's a story about shorten it's a
  767. 35:23company by this photograph winning
  768. 35:26general notice the character of the
  769. 35:28leading general when in general takes on
  770. 35:30his armies ghosts who are the Army's
  771. 35:33ghosts Vietnam the guy learned in the
  772. 35:37mud of Vietnam how not to play war
  773. 35:39refuse to repeat the same space they
  774. 35:41make me enough it's actually a great
  775. 35:43story above before you're a hard reality
  776. 35:46sacred for you and said victory over
  777. 35:50Iraq was his hours not the president's
  778. 35:55not the nation's was his and he was here
  779. 35:59to clean it in characteristically
  780. 36:02forceful fashion Los Angeles I'm has its
  781. 36:08own strategy but labels it Schwartz
  782. 36:10coughs strategy the president strategy
  783. 36:13not the American strategy not the Allied
  784. 36:15strategy is personalized to schwartzel
  785. 36:19is always a even couldn't resist the
  786. 36:23temptation to show the telephone line
  787. 36:25would they put of Austin short hops
  788. 36:27folks and they even cleaned up a
  789. 36:29grammatical wonder than the general and
  790. 36:30he's neither a strategist nosy school to
  791. 36:33the operational arts nor is he a
  792. 36:34technician Lords in general and a modem
  793. 36:37saint nor is he a soldier as how the
  794. 36:39general said the general said known as
  795. 36:41he has in soldier they cleaned it up it
  796. 36:45isn't accurate but it's clear it's more
  797. 36:49interesting and then finally Newsday
  798. 36:53does said gives the president credit for
  799. 36:55meeting a rock but the headline over the
  800. 36:57story itself is taking off to school and
  801. 36:59as the scolding of Saddam Hussein with a
  802. 37:01picture of Jennifer and my favorite
  803. 37:05headline of the war is not a story about
  804. 37:09the norman conquest of 1066 for that of
  805. 37:13hastings but rather stormin norman my
  806. 37:16conquering hero can you see why a month
  807. 37:19later the White House's will ticked off
  808. 37:21that the general was saying not mine not
  809. 37:24mine reporters behave predictably that
  810. 37:31is they use these five techniques
  811. 37:33consulate contradiction controversy
  812. 37:35colorful language and it has the
  813. 37:37characters to create stories that are
  814. 37:39really interesting they don't
  815. 37:42necessarily have to be accurate or
  816. 37:44important if we know that we can plan
  817. 37:49differently we can prepare differently
  818. 37:54we can engage differently in ways that
  819. 37:59allow us to advance the story using the
  820. 38:02five scenes to our advantage the pianos
  821. 38:04know how to do that but they can't be
  822. 38:07like Jon Stewart Billy ah when the boss
  823. 38:11is about to say something over living so
  824. 38:15the discipline for the leaders is to
  825. 38:19keep in mind only to the interview for a
  826. 38:21purpose and however personally
  827. 38:25impulsively you might want to say
  828. 38:28something more interesting we then
  829. 38:31defeat the purpose I close with an
  830. 38:34observation by a journalist from homes
  831. 38:36under museum Republic intellectual and
  832. 38:39journalist walter Lippmann wrote a book
  833. 38:42election
  834. 38:43to in which he described what
  835. 38:45journalists are all about well he said
  836. 38:48in 1922 is as true in 2016 he said for
  837. 38:53the most part we journalists do not
  838. 38:54foresee in the divan we define first and
  839. 38:58then we see a missile whose missile is
  840. 39:02it the present insulting police general
  841. 39:09Schwarzkopf disagree who the president
  842. 39:13why the president not taste is advised
  843. 39:16they define first and then this evening
  844. 39:19we know that we can take that into
  845. 39:23account and we can engage warfare
  846. 39:27reporters are storytellers first me now
  847. 39:32know how to gain storytellers in ways
  848. 39:35that protect us and enhance our position
  849. 39:38it is my earnest hope that you hold
  850. 39:41inhibit news on purpose for that i'm
  851. 39:46done i'll be happy to take some
  852. 39:49questions but first i'd like to ask you
  853. 39:51a question as you reflect on everything
  854. 39:55we've covered over the last hour and 15
  855. 39:57minutes what's the single thing is
  856. 39:59supplies and the single biggest takeaway
  857. 40:03that you can begin you apply in the work
  858. 40:06that you do well that's the Hoover line
  859. 40:10I have a miss an opportunity to keep
  860. 40:11your mouth shut other surprise for
  861. 40:17tables being intentional which by the
  862. 40:23way I DMC PP 1 you're supposed to be
  863. 40:26what
  864. 40:33goodie box have a good relationship with
  865. 40:35your PA 08 there a box that's right make
  866. 40:43sure you in alignment with who your
  867. 40:44shipments are here Henry Kissinger we're
  868. 40:48walking to the briefing room and they
  869. 40:50got a piece of paper and say good
  870. 40:51morning ladies you have any questions or
  871. 40:53answers I don't suggest you Tonkin that
  872. 40:56way I think we have fun for me too well
  873. 41:11the first decide if I meet with the
  874. 41:12filter I read to me news on various
  875. 41:18topics from the New York Times The Wall
  876. 41:20Street Journal washer post Huffington
  877. 41:22Post CNN CBS FOX etc it's like a lot of
  878. 41:25stuff in my inbox which means i don't
  879. 41:27actually go to the places to look at it
  880. 41:30what i have tied them up on an airplane
  881. 41:32ride an airport i'll read The Wall
  882. 41:33Street Journal an angel from the air
  883. 41:34cons because are typically available in
  884. 41:36airports I'll read the local paper just
  885. 41:38to get some flavor I travel around the
  886. 41:40world a lot so I read the papers in the
  887. 41:43countries i've added what it means i
  888. 41:44find that I've done kind of workshop in
  889. 41:4642 mountains these principles don't
  890. 41:50change there's some retailers everywhere
  891. 41:52even need is control how they choose to
  892. 41:57use conflict or contradiction pumpers in
  893. 41:59California and has the characters may be
  894. 42:01culturally defined but that they do that
  895. 42:04is not totally fine it is a common
  896. 42:07denominator of journalism that that's
  897. 42:09how they work so i'm in jordan talking
  898. 42:12to Al Jazeera it looks and feels and
  899. 42:15have the same effect as what I'm in New
  900. 42:16York obviously end or a lot of us easy
  901. 42:19so regardless of where you are the
  902. 42:22journalism is the way they implemented
  903. 42:28all the questions that i did i did this
  904. 42:44workshop in the usually linear times for
  905. 42:46voting for the Maritimes gave the
  906. 42:48newsroom to the rates for East Coast
  907. 42:50public repair suppose here I said
  908. 42:52exactly they're gone said here while I
  909. 42:54started the journalists in the lead
  910. 42:56including foreign editor and foreign
  911. 42:57correspondents but you're wrong and
  912. 42:59every one of these I can put of your
  913. 43:01time story up and say what about that
  914. 43:02what about that okay yeah okay with
  915. 43:08respect to the interesting versus
  916. 43:09important verses accurate barn area near
  917. 43:12type of really smart actually we worked
  918. 43:16really hard to not Gator Bowl I ask is
  919. 43:19that the same as working really hard to
  920. 43:20get it right she's really smart she's a
  921. 43:23real anything about that you know what
  922. 43:25if I've got a reporter at a refugee camp
  923. 43:28in the South Sudan and once people come
  924. 43:30into their hijiki and exert their allure
  925. 43:33village in Ghana and the Lord's
  926. 43:35Resistance Army committed village and
  927. 43:36burnet village it is implemented women
  928. 43:39children who look at men and we just
  929. 43:40bury my my reporter is no way of knowing
  930. 43:43you there from that note if the village
  931. 43:46was burned down it was burned down by
  932. 43:48the oranges is concerning if people were
  933. 43:50guilty kidnapped no I you know so I
  934. 43:53trust the judgment of my recorder and
  935. 43:56then we protect ourselves by putting in
  936. 43:59the newspaper according to eyewitness
  937. 44:01accounts so they don't have the ability
  938. 44:04or even the new key to verify the
  939. 44:06underlying huh it is actually enough
  940. 44:09here for our disciplines that's not the
  941. 44:12same as a given to accuracy you can
  942. 44:16enjoy that what they do the same issues
  943. 44:20with confidence is they only got in
  944. 44:22other words it could impossible so by
  945. 44:25the end of the hour and a half for the
  946. 44:28midterm down yeah that's on you we don't
  947. 44:30use the same way
  948. 44:31as that thank you for your attention
  949. 44:35thank you for the invitation sober up
  950. 44:51all right then you must repair ski it
  951. 44:53for the fall folks everybody in the room
  952. 44:55let's go ahead and break til 1145 be
  953. 44:57back in your seats
