- 0:49and about Natan Sharansky.
- 0:52I want to start this event the way we
- 0:55should start every event with the why.
- 0:57Why are we doing this? Why Natan
- 0:59Sharansky?
- 1:01More than ever, we're trying to feel
- 1:04connected to create meaningful dialogue
- 1:07from across the world. Our program today
- 1:11introduces the man of the hour, Natan
- 1:13Sharansky, who fought long and hard
- 1:17against the former Soviet regime behind
- 1:19bars and side by side with many of his
- 1:23Jewish brothers and Jewish sisters
- 1:26for the right to practice Judaism and
- 1:29for the right to go to Israel.
- 1:32Since then, he has held various
- 1:33leadership positions throughout the
- 1:36Jewish world in Israel and he currently
- 1:40is the chair of the Institute for the
- 1:42Study of Global Anti-Semitism and
- 1:44Policy. And what I find most inspiring
- 1:46about him is he is a leading voice on
- 1:49Jewish unity today. Today we explore his
- 1:53unique narrative and how in times like
- 1:55this right now, we can learn from his
- 1:58life and take some inspiration into the
- 2:00days and perhaps weeks ahead. Here's
- 2:04what we're going to do. I'm going to
- 2:06give you some basic facts about Natan
- 2:08Sharansky. Make sure you're listening
- 2:10closely. We have schools from across the
- 2:12globe participating in this. We're going
- 2:14to play a game of cahoot. If you're an
- 2:16adult and haven't heard of that, well,
- 2:17your child has heard of it. Let's make
- 2:20sure to play cahoot together. It's going
- 2:21to be a good time. My colleague Avi
- 2:23Posen is going to be leading that. And
- 2:25then we're going to hear from Natan
- 2:27Sharansky.
- 2:29He's going to give us some answers to
- 2:30some questions that I have. So, who is
- 2:32Natan Sharansky?
- 2:36Wow. How do I begin this? Natan
- 2:38Sharansky
- 2:40spent nine years in the worst prisons
- 2:42that the Soviet that the Soviet regime
- 2:45had to offer. Natan Sharansky is so is
- 2:49someone that I learned so much about
- 2:51growing up. He's somebody who was part
- 2:54of my life, part of so many people's
- 2:56lives, someone that we didn't know
- 2:58personally, but somebody that we all got
- 3:00to know from hearing his story. He loved
- 3:02the Jewish people. Um, and he loved
- 3:04Israel so much. Um, and here's a story
- 3:07when he was finally released in a
- 3:09prisoner exchange on a bridge to Berlin.
- 3:11It's a story that many of us have heard
- 3:12about. I'm sure if you haven't heard
- 3:14this, pay close attention now. When he
- 3:16was about to be released by his um by
- 3:20his prisoners, Sheransky's captors gave
- 3:22him strict instructions. Here was the
- 3:24instruction. Ready? Walk straight across
- 3:27to the other side of the bridge.
- 3:30What did Sheransky do? He climbed out of
- 3:32his car and closed the door and he began
- 3:35to walk across. Suddenly, he started
- 3:38zigzagging a step or two to the left, a
- 3:41step or two to the right. Zigzag,
- 3:43zigzag, back and forth he went. The
- 3:45Americans who are on the other side
- 3:47started wondering what is going on here.
- 3:50Was he drugged? Is something wrong with
- 3:53him? Is he injured? What's going on
- 3:55here? It was bizarre.
- 3:57Really weird.
- 3:59When he reached other side, he finally
- 4:01explained everything that was going on.
- 4:04Why did he do what he did? He explained
- 4:07it was a final gesture of defiance. It
- 4:10was a final gesture to demonstrate to
- 4:13his capttors that he was not willing to
- 4:16listen to what they were telling him to
- 4:18do. They told him to walk straight. So
- 4:21what did he do? He zigzagged. They told
- 4:23him not to practice Judaism. What did he
- 4:25do? He practiced Judaism. They told him
- 4:27not to commit to Israel. What did he do?
- 4:29Commit to Israel. He decided he was
- 4:32definitely not going to start following
- 4:33their orders now. Not on his final steps
- 4:35towards freedom. No way. No how.
- 4:38Sheransky's zigzag zigzag walk over the
- 4:41bridge was a powerful and symbolic act
- 4:43of protest and resilience. And even that
- 4:47act doesn't begin to scratch the surface
- 4:49of Natan's Jewish heroism in the face of
- 4:52oppression. So here are facts and I want
- 4:56you to pay close attention to these
- 4:57facts about Natan Sharansky because
- 4:59we're going to be doing the first ever
- 5:00international Zoom competition from my
- 5:03own living room. first international
- 5:06zoom uh cahoot competition about the
- 5:08life and times of Natan Sharansky. It's
- 5:11so amazing to see all these different uh
- 5:12names pop up here all these from all
- 5:15these different cities from across the
- 5:16globe. Unbelievable.
- 5:19So here's what we're going to do. Here
- 5:20are some facts and if you win there are
- 5:23going to be three prizes by the way. So
- 5:25pay close attention. Avi Pose and my
- 5:27colleagues gonna tell you what the
- 5:28prizes are. So number one fact number
- 5:31one his name was not always Natan
- 5:34Sharansky actually and I hope I
- 5:36pronounced this correctly it was Anatoli
- 5:39Borisovich Sharansky he changed his name
- 5:41after making aliyah and there are many
- 5:43other f famous Israeli figures like
- 5:44Golden Mayor was Golden Meerson Shivon
- 5:47Perez was Perski I think David Benurian
- 5:50was David Gruin so he was another
- 5:52example of a Jewish Israeli figure who
- 5:55really changed his name when he got to
- 5:56Israel so it's Anatoli hope you remember
- 5:58that number too. I got to tell you this.
- 6:01He is low-key a genius. A genius. Most
- 6:03people don't know Sheransky studied
- 6:05science and physics. People think of him
- 6:07as a diplomat, as a politician, perhaps
- 6:09as a spokesperson,
- 6:11but he was always sharp with his with
- 6:14his sharp and clever IQ. He studied at
- 6:17the Institute of Physics and Applied
- 6:19Math, which is the Soviet MIT for those
- 6:22of us who are so American centric
- 6:23perhaps like me.
- 6:26Number three, that's fact number two.
- 6:28Number three, during his nine years in
- 6:30prison, he was in solitary confinement
- 6:34for 4 and a half years. Solitary, listen
- 6:37to that. Solitary confinement for 4 and
- 6:39a half years. And he was in a punishment
- 6:42cell for 405 days. He completed a 110day
- 6:47hunger strike.
- 6:49He started his hunger strike on Yum
- 6:51Kipur 1982 and he was force-fed 34
- 6:54times.
- 6:57terribly sad.
- 7:00He also spent 12 years separated from
- 7:02his wife Avital who was a main heroine
- 7:06throughout the whole story.
- 7:09He and his wife were separated one day
- 7:12after getting married. It's hard to even
- 7:14imagine
- 7:16but he was an inspiration to so many
- 7:17including Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela
- 7:20the former presidents of South Africa
- 7:22and a leading fighter against apartheid.
- 7:26He was inspired by none other than Natan
- 7:29Sharansky. Natan Sharansky's book, Fear
- 7:31No Evil. He read it while in prison. And
- 7:34when he was in prison and he received
- 7:36his book, he received his book from
- 7:37Natan Sharansky. Mandela read it cover
- 7:40to cover.
- 7:42And finally, the iconic song is you know
- 7:47we could all sing it together.
- 7:52That song was created by by Rabbi
- 7:55Schlommo Karbach and became the anthem
- 7:58to free Soviet jewelry. It spread
- 8:01throughout the Jewish world and was sung
- 8:03by Soviet Jews in synagogues and secret
- 8:05meetings. Those are the facts about
- 8:08Natan Sharansky. That's the why in this
- 8:10crazy moment in the history of the world
- 8:12that we are now doing this event
- 8:15together with Natan Sharansky. Natan,
- 8:17I'm so excited to have you here. I'm
- 8:19going to ask you three questions. Um
- 8:21here are the three questions. Question
- 8:22number one, I'm going to read you a
- 8:24quote. Okay, here's the quote that I
- 8:26have for you. Um, you wrote, "The sense
- 8:28of Jewish unity was a real force, like
- 8:31the current that helps you swim down
- 8:32river, but Jews don't swim alone. We're
- 8:35not even supposed to pray alone, seeking
- 8:37nine others for a quorum, a minion."
- 8:39Instead, when you join the Jewish
- 8:41people, you don't just get an identity.
- 8:43With all these ideas and values, you get
- 8:45a community with all these people
- 8:46personalities, too. Since joining, I was
- 8:48never alone. Natan,
- 8:51how did you feel Jewish unity while you
- 8:53were so secluded and isolated?
- 8:58Well, uh, first of all, I, uh, had a
- 9:02very good, uh, rehearsal because before
- 9:06I went to prison, I was absolutely Jew,
- 9:10Soviet Jew without any identity. H, and
- 9:14wanted only to survive and make my
- 9:18career in spite of anti-mitism. Then I
- 9:20discovered Israel.
- 9:23uh when suddenly after 1967
- 9:26uh all the people around you start
- 9:28asking you how you guys succeeded to do
- 9:32it victory of Israel and you understand
- 9:34whether you want or not people connect
- 9:36you to Israel and you start reading in
- 9:38the underground the books about your own
- 9:41history and you discover that if only
- 9:43you want you can have can be part of
- 9:46this history and of these people who
- 9:48want to help you and from the state of
- 9:50Israel which is ready to send airplanes
- 9:53on the end of the world but to help you.
- 9:55And then I became activist. And for a
- 9:58number of years while being an activist
- 10:00in Soviet jewelry movement and a human
- 10:02rights movement, I met with many Jews
- 10:05who are coming from the west, from New
- 10:09York, from Los Angeles, from many other
- 10:11parts of the world and who wanted to
- 10:13help. And you saw what how devoted they
- 10:17are. And then while in prison, you're
- 10:20trying to remember to restore every
- 10:23moment that you spent talking to uh
- 10:28those Jews or speaking by telephone with
- 10:31Israel or with uh some Jews abroad
- 10:35describing the station or participating
- 10:38in demonstrations when you feel that
- 10:41it's small demonstration of 10 people
- 10:43you'll be arrested but all the Jewish
- 10:45world will go on demonstration.
- 10:48to to defend you. And you remember
- 10:51operation and the operation on Israel
- 10:54sent to the end of the world to the
- 10:56airplanes to release Jews. And the
- 10:59picture of Yonyi Netanyahu who was
- 11:01killed in this operation was in my wall
- 11:04when they came to arrest me. And each
- 11:07time when you hear the airplane in the
- 11:11skies of Siberia, you think that can be
- 11:15the airplane from Israel. So this
- 11:17feeling that this my people will never
- 11:20stop struggling for me that my that you
- 11:23are part of this unique struggle which
- 11:25continues h and that they will come and
- 11:28that Israel will uh will bring you back
- 11:33home that was very strong and so each
- 11:36time when KGB was telling me almost with
- 11:39disgust who is supporting you there are
- 11:41only bunch of students and housewives
- 11:44but you immediately remembered all those
- 11:47students and housewives who were with
- 11:50you in the struggle and you were
- 11:52absolutely sure the struggle doesn't
- 11:54stop for a moment and that's what gave
- 11:56me the strength to continue.
- 11:59Natan, thank you so much for for talking
- 12:02to us about that and the moment that
- 12:04Yonyi Netanyahu led the operation in
- 12:071976. Um, the operation in Tbby was a
- 12:11moment that I was not alive for, but it
- 12:13is a moment that I grew up hearing all
- 12:15about, watching movies about. And yes,
- 12:17we do have an unpacked video, two videos
- 12:19actually about Operation Inteb. Um, so
- 12:21everyone should check that out. And we
- 12:23have videos about you that I'll talk
- 12:24about later. Um, we need a lot of
- 12:26advice, all of us in the world, in the
- 12:29Jewish world specifically. Um, could you
- 12:31please give us advice, your best advice
- 12:34for the Jewish world today to feel
- 12:36connected to one another? What advice
- 12:38could you give us?
- 12:40So, you mean that now when we all have
- 12:43to sit in our apartments and uh for me
- 12:48the biggest challenge is that now I and
- 12:51Vital cannot meet every day our
- 12:54grandchildren as we used to do. uh and
- 12:58some other people have other challenges
- 13:01but uh the first advice I already gave
- 13:04you you you have to feel that you're
- 13:08part of the big struggle the struggle
- 13:10against corona is also big global
- 13:13struggle against very dangerous enemy
- 13:16and each of us is a soldier so there is
- 13:19uh meaning in the fact that we are
- 13:21isolated and the better you follow these
- 13:25rules the better soldier you are
- 13:27contributing to general struggle. That's
- 13:29first. Second,
- 13:31don't let the circumstances
- 13:35lead you. Don't feel yourself dependent
- 13:37on the facts or the which don't depend
- 13:40on you. Don't build projects. Oh, in a
- 13:42week it will be finished and then I'll
- 13:44go on on vacations. It doesn't depend on
- 13:48you when it will be finished. If I was I
- 13:51understood very quickly in the prison
- 13:53that I don't know whether they will get
- 13:56out alive. It doesn't depend on me. I
- 13:58don't know when they'll be released if
- 14:00at all. It doesn't depend on me. But I
- 14:02do know that whether I will remain a
- 14:05free person in prison. It depends on me.
- 14:08So make things which plan things which
- 14:11depend on you. You can plan okay and now
- 14:13I'll in three days I'll read a book
- 14:15which I finally can read. uh in a one
- 14:19month I can learn a language which I
- 14:21wanted to learn but I didn't have time
- 14:23and so on and so on. So plan your life
- 14:26and and rely on things which depend on
- 14:30you but then fulfill them and then you
- 14:32will will feel that you're not simply
- 14:33wasting your time and you will not be
- 14:35desperate. Third, maybe one of the most
- 14:38important things, never lose your sense
- 14:40of humor. Keep laughing, keep joking.
- 14:43Thanks God. Thanks to internet, the god
- 14:47of internet. We have millions of jokes I
- 14:50receive in Hebrew, in English and
- 14:53Russian every day about ourselves, about
- 14:56our situation, about corona, about our
- 14:59leaders. That helps you to see the world
- 15:03in the real proportions. Don't stop
- 15:06laughing on yourself for a moment. Uh,
- 15:10use your hobbies. My great hobby was
- 15:13chess. I knew how to play chess without
- 15:16looking at the board. So, in the
- 15:18punishing cell, I could play thousands
- 15:21and thousands of chess games. Win all of
- 15:23them. Feel yourself strong
- 15:25intellectually. Uh, you don't have to
- 15:27play without the board. You can play
- 15:28with the board. You can draw, you can
- 15:31sing, you can play music, you can do
- 15:33whatever you want. That is your moment
- 15:36to enjoy your life. And the most
- 15:39important of course is
- 15:41I'm
- 15:43part of the great people who were
- 15:45scattered all over the world for many
- 15:48centuries. We lonely in small
- 15:51communities. And nevertheless, we always
- 15:54felt that we are part of the big people
- 15:56with a big mission with a great future.
- 15:59And that's so easy to feel it now today.
- 16:02Never forget, never for a moment, forget
- 16:05that you're part of something much
- 16:07bigger than yourself.
- 16:09Ton, thank you so much. Those are
- 16:11incredibly inspiring words. I don't know
- 16:13that all of us have the ability to play
- 16:15chess the way you have the ability. I'm
- 16:17not sure all of us could learn a
- 16:18language in a month the way you probably
- 16:19could learn a language in a month. Um
- 16:21but nevertheless, the idea of pursuing
- 16:24meaning, pursuing uh humor um and
- 16:27feeling connected um is and and pursuing
- 16:30our hobbies is is such an important
- 16:31thing for all of us to be focused on
- 16:32right now. Um and thank you so much for
- 16:35that advice
- 16:35and pursue your jokes. Don't forget
- 16:37about jokes, you know.
- 16:39Okay, deal sold. But let's put aside
- 16:42Corona for a minute now, Natan. Um
- 16:45let's take a step back. Let's imagine a
- 16:47world that was pre-corona for a minute.
- 16:50there was much conversation about a
- 16:52large divide between North American
- 16:55Jews, maybe specifically American Jews,
- 16:57and Israeli Jews. Um, what do you
- 16:59recommend to young people when it comes
- 17:02to bridging this divide? How do we do
- 17:05it?
- 17:08Look, uh, first of all, you have to ask
- 17:10yourself, do you really want to be part
- 17:13of this family? And I think it's so
- 17:17interesting when you discover already
- 17:19discover in my case discovered at the
- 17:21age of 20 this very interesting history
- 17:25when you discover how cool it is to be
- 17:27in connection with all the Jews. How
- 17:29interesting it is to come to Israel and
- 17:32to discover that it's more than young
- 17:36full of energy place. So if you decide
- 17:40that you are part of that you want to be
- 17:42part of this family then you have to
- 17:45understand that we are not uh twins we
- 17:48are siblings we we chose to live in
- 17:51different environment half of us chose
- 17:54to live in Jewish state in Jewish
- 17:57democratic state in the Middle East
- 17:59surrounded with all these dictatorships
- 18:02and part of us chose to live as a
- 18:04minority in liberal society the country
- 18:07like America Survival
- 18:10strategies are different. Our interests
- 18:12sometimes look different. But if you're
- 18:14family, you have also to understand what
- 18:17are the interests of the other part of
- 18:18the family.
- 18:20The fact that today so many
- 18:23young Jews in diaspora are not ready to
- 18:27appreciate fully the passion of this
- 18:30struggle democratic struggle of Israel
- 18:33for its right to exist as a democracy
- 18:35among all these dictatorships or the
- 18:38fact that so many Israelis
- 18:41are not ready to appreciate the
- 18:43importance of uh religious tolerance or
- 18:48or the fact that in order to survive in
- 18:51that environment in America, they need
- 18:54all these different forms of the
- 18:56expressing Judaism. And that builds kind
- 19:00of intolerance or that why should we uh
- 19:05do something to satisfy their needs
- 19:07which are not part of our life, part of
- 19:10our family. And the moment is first
- 19:13understand that it is the your family
- 19:16and you want to be part of this and the
- 19:18other hand that for this you have to
- 19:21love them as they are with their
- 19:23interests with their preferences and you
- 19:25have to understand these interests and
- 19:28preferences. Uh then the bridges are
- 19:32built by themselves and nothing is
- 19:33difficult. It's so easy to accept them
- 19:36as they are and to think what I can do
- 19:40here in Israel. what can I do in my
- 19:42community in order to feel closer to
- 19:46them. So uh but that's struggle but it's
- 19:52struggle which is worth fighting and in
- 19:56the end you will enjoy because in the
- 19:57end the price is that you feel yourself
- 20:01part of this unique journey through
- 20:04centuries of the unique people with
- 20:07unique mission and uh it influences all
- 20:11the world becomes better place when
- 20:13you're proud part of this family.
- 20:16Natan, if you weren't in Israel and you
- 20:20were in LA here with me, or if I was in
- 20:22Israel and it wasn't Corona virus ep
- 20:25pandemic right now, I give you a huge
- 20:26hug. Um, I want to thank you so much.
- 20:30Um, I speak for many of us when I say
- 20:33that you've had such a powerful impact
- 20:35on our lives. uh without even knowing
- 20:38each and every one of us. Um I got uh
- 20:42someone mentioned from the Q&A that they
- 20:44me that they named their child that that
- 20:46they were named sorry after you. And
- 20:48there's so many people like that because
- 20:50I think what you represent to all of us
- 20:52is um Jewish unity. What you represent
