- 0:00The last chapter of Galatians
- 0:02sums everything up. The previous
- 0:04chapters
- 0:06have created some very clear contrasts.
- 0:10Those who live by the flesh versus those
- 0:13who live by the spirit. Those who put
- 0:15their confidence in do's and don'ts
- 0:18versus those who live by the promise and
- 0:21walk by love.
- 0:23Love fulfills the law and the prophets.
- 0:25And in the end of the chapter 5, he told
- 0:29us
- 0:30that
- 0:31the deeds of the flesh are evident.
- 0:33He named them all out.
- 0:35Then he told us the fruit, the one fruit
- 0:37of the spirit is evident, and he told us
- 0:39all the sections of that one orange.
- 0:42And then he said, "Let us not be
- 0:44boastful or challenging one another." He
- 0:46said that if we want to belong to Jesus,
- 0:48we have to crucify the flesh. So now, in
- 0:52the last chapter, he's going to tell us
- 0:54what to do when we do get caught up in
- 0:57those sins. He's going to show us how to
- 1:00walk in love
- 1:02even for people who fallen into the
- 1:04wrong approach.
- 1:07He starts with this word,
- 1:09"Brethren,
- 1:12if anyone is caught
- 1:15in
- 1:15>> [music]
- 1:16>> any trespass,
- 1:18you who are spiritual
- 1:22restore such a one
- 1:24in a spirit
- 1:26of gentleness.
- 1:28Each [music] one
- 1:30looking to yourself, so that you too
- 1:32will not be tempted.
- 1:34Bear one another's burdens and thereby
- 1:39fulfill the law
- 1:41of Christ."
- 1:43He told us that love for one's neighbor
- 1:46fulfills the law. Now he calls it the
- 1:48law of Christ.
- 1:50Do you get it? But what is the means by
- 1:54which we help somebody who gets caught
- 1:57in the Hagar spirit of the flesh. It's
- 2:00the spirit. You who are spiritual
- 2:04in a spirit of gentleness
- 2:07help.
- 2:09Don't climb up on your high horse and
- 2:11point.
- 2:13Don't climb up on your soap box and
- 2:15condemn.
- 2:16The whole point is help them.
- 2:19Help them. If you can help them, if you
- 2:22can get them back into the spirit, if
- 2:24you can get them back into faith, then
- 2:27you have fulfilled the law of Christ.
- 2:29You've done what Jesus did.
- 2:32This is how love wins every single time.
- 2:35Climbing high upon a tree where someone
- 2:37else should die.
- 2:39For if anyone thinks he is something
- 2:43when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
- 2:47When you see others fail, you can lift
- 2:49yourself up. Oh,
- 2:51did you notice?
- 2:53But you think you're something when
- 2:54you're nothing. And all of us are
- 2:56nothing. That's why we need to belong to
- 2:59Christ. That's why we need to surrender
- 3:01ourselves to him.
- 3:03But each one must examine his own work.
- 3:08Not each one should make sure he has no
- 3:10works.
- 3:11But each one must examine his own work.
- 3:14And then he will have reason for
- 3:15boasting in regard to himself alone. And
- 3:18not in regard to another.
- 3:20In other words, he's saying, don't boast
- 3:22that you're not like him.
- 3:24Boast in whatever God is doing in your
- 3:26life.
- 3:27And not in a boastful spirit, but in a
- 3:29testimony gratitude spirit. Jesus set me
- 3:32free from this. Jesus delivered me from
- 3:35that. I know that in myself I'm nothing.
- 3:38That's what he's just said above.
- 3:41But God.
- 3:43For each one will bear his own load.
- 3:46We're going to each stand alone before
- 3:47the judgment seat of God.
- 3:49The one who is taught the word is to
- 3:52share all good things with the one who
- 3:54teaches him.
- 3:56The one who is taught the word
- 3:59is supposed to share all good things.
- 4:02If people are bringing you the truth,
- 4:04give them practical things. Help them
- 4:06out.
- 4:08Share with the one teaching you.
- 4:11Do not be deceived.
- 4:13God is not mocked.
- 4:15For whatever a man sows,
- 4:18this he will also reap.
- 4:21How would God be mocked if we thought
- 4:24that
- 4:28we could sow things and not reap it?
- 4:31Because that's how God set up the world
- 4:34when he put the life of everything in
- 4:36its own seed and told the seeds to bear
- 4:40fruit according to their kind.
- 4:42So, if God has spoken that the life is
- 4:45in the seed, then we mock his creation
- 4:48when we think we can live a certain way
- 4:50and reap a different way.
- 4:53Do you understand? But, the immediate
- 4:55context that he's speaking of here is
- 4:57he's saying to help people who preach
- 4:59the word to you.
- 5:01That's how you sow.
- 5:03And he's saying, "Don't expect to reap
- 5:04something different than what you sow.
- 5:07If you're not willing to help the
- 5:08ministry, don't expect to be helped by
- 5:10the ministry."
- 5:12Do not be deceived. God is not mocked.
- 5:14For whatever a man sows, this he will
- 5:16also reap.
- 5:18For the one who sows to his own flesh
- 5:20will from the flesh reap corruption.
- 5:23What he's saying is if you give all your
- 5:25assets only to your own pleasure, okay,
- 5:29expect your pleasure to help you in your
- 5:30time of need. But, if you support the
- 5:33body and the ministry and the kingdom of
- 5:35God, in your time of need, you're going
- 5:36to reap from what you sowed.
- 5:39But, the one who sows to the spirit will
- 5:41from the spirit reap eternal life. Sow
- 5:44to what the spirit is doing. Is the
- 5:46spirit starting a church somewhere? Help
- 5:48with help that.
- 5:50Is the spirit ministering effectively in
- 5:52your body? Help. Help that ministry of
- 5:54the spirit.
- 5:57Let us not lose heart in doing good.
- 6:00For in due time, we will reap if we do
- 6:04not grow weary.
- 6:06So then, while we have opportunity, let
- 6:09us do good to all people
- 6:13and especially
- 6:14to those of the household of faith.
- 6:18So the whole point of the sowing and
- 6:19reaping is how are you helping your
- 6:21body? How are you helping the household
- 6:23of faith? That's the sowing and reaping.
- 6:26And don't expect to give little and reap
- 6:29much.
- 6:32See with what large letters I am writing
- 6:35to you with my own hand.
- 6:37Now this probably means that Paul does
- 6:39have an eye affliction. So he writes
- 6:42with a large letters to even see his own
- 6:44writing.
- 6:45And so that comment is probably making
- 6:47them remember his affliction.
- 6:50See with what large letters I am writing
- 6:52to you with my own hand.
- 6:55Those who desire to make a good showing
- 6:57in the flesh
- 6:59try to compel you to be circumcised
- 7:02simply so that they will not be
- 7:04persecuted for the cross of Christ. So
- 7:06he's saying, "There are people who are
- 7:09telling you that my affliction is the
- 7:11judgment of God. They're trying to make
- 7:13a good showing in the flesh. Look how we
- 7:15don't have eye problems.
- 7:17Look how healthy we are." He says the
- 7:19truth is they're just trying to escape
- 7:21being persecuted. They're cowards.
- 7:25For those who are circumcised
- 7:28do not even keep the law themselves,
- 7:31but they desire to have you circumcised
- 7:34so that they may boast in their flesh.
- 7:38But may it never be
- 7:40that I would boast
- 7:42except in the cross
- 7:45of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:47Through which the world
- 7:50has been crucified to me
- 7:52and I to the world.
- 7:56So, we know how
- 7:57the world is crucified to Paul.
- 8:00He's put to death the things in him that
- 8:02wanted that world.
- 8:04But, Paul is also crucified to the
- 8:06world. They look at him and they run the
- 8:08other direction. He's [snorts] anathema.
- 8:10He's disgusting to the world just like
- 8:12the world is disgusting to him.
- 8:16For neither is circumcision anything nor
- 8:19uncircumcised. Now, here's the second
- 8:21time he says it. For neither is
- 8:23circumcision anything nor uncircumcision
- 8:27but
- 8:28a new creation.
- 8:32And what is that new creation?
- 8:34It's Christ.
- 8:36It's not just you as a new creation.
- 8:38It's you as part of the one new man who
- 8:41is Christ, the body of Christ.
- 8:45And those who will walk by this rule
- 8:49this rule
- 8:50that doesn't look at anything except the
- 8:53new creation of the body of Christ.
- 8:56Those who will walk by this rule, peace
- 8:59and mercy be upon them and upon the
- 9:03Israel of God.
- 9:06So, they [music] are the true Israel.
- 9:08They're not Hagar.
- 9:11From now on
- 9:13let no one cause trouble for me
- 9:16for I bear in my body
- 9:19the brand marks of Jesus.
- 9:23The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
- 9:25with your spirit, brethren.
- 9:27Amen.
- 9:29When he says I bear in my body the brand
- 9:31mark
- 9:32the brand marks of the Lord [music]
- 9:33Jesus, what that means is that
- 9:36when a man was made a slave,
- 9:39he was branded, usually right here on
- 9:41the neck, just below his collar, so that
- 9:44if he was ever arrested, a soldier could
- 9:46just look,
- 9:47and they would see that he had a brand.
- 9:50And that meant that he was in a he was a
- 9:51slave, and they knew who he belonged to.
- 9:54Paul says, "The things that I'm
- 9:56suffering,
- 9:57my affliction in my eyes, the
- 9:59persecution,
- 10:01the misunderstanding, the false
- 10:02accusation,
- 10:04they are my brand marks
- 10:06that I am a slave,
- 10:08but the slave of the one who loved me
- 10:10and died for me.
- 10:11Not the slave of any man, not the slave
- 10:14of the law, not the slave of fear,
- 10:17but my body and my flesh is the slave of
- 10:20Jesus, even while my spirit, my new man,
- 10:23is completely free as a true son.
- 10:26There's a part of you that's a slave and
- 10:28should always stay a slave, your flesh.
- 10:30And there's a part of you that's not a
- 10:31slave,
- 10:33and that's your new man, your spirit,
- 10:35the son of God that he's made you to be.
- 10:38That's the end of Galatians.
- 10:41>> [music]
