- 0:00Galatians chapter 5 verse 1.
- 0:03It was for freedom that Christ set us
- 0:06free.
- 0:08Therefore, keep standing firm
- 0:11and do not be subject again to a yoke of
- 0:14slavery.
- 0:17Behold, I Paul say to you that if you
- 0:20receive circumcision, Christ will be
- 0:23[music] of no benefit to you.
- 0:28Paul circumcised Timothy.
- 0:31But he did not circumcise him
- 0:34as a [music] means of brokering eternal
- 0:37salvation.
- 0:39If you still accept that salvation comes
- 0:42through circumcision or any of those
- 0:44ceremonial rituals, you don't need
- 0:47Jesus.
- 0:48And the point of Jesus is that he ushers
- 0:52you into a relationship with the Father
- 0:55where you can finally call out Abba
- 0:57Father.
- 0:58So Paul says in the early chapters, "I
- 1:01only want to know this from you. Did you
- 1:03receive the Holy Spirit when you obeyed
- 1:04the law or did you receive the Holy
- 1:06Spirit and receive miracles when you
- 1:09heard
- 1:11in faith?"
- 1:12So the whole point and the evidence of
- 1:15true atonement and justification is the
- 1:17outpouring and presence of the Holy
- 1:19Spirit. That's the whole point. It's to
- 1:22reconcile us to God, which is to say to
- 1:24bring us into God's presence where the
- 1:27high priest doesn't sprinkle
- 1:29some blood on the altar once a year and
- 1:32then slip out of the Holy of Holies.
- 1:34Instead, the veil is torn and we can
- 1:37come into the presence of the Lord.
- 1:38[music]
- 1:40If you accept circumcision, Christ will
- 1:43be of no benefit to you.
- 1:45I testify again to every man who
- 1:47receives circumcision that he is under
- 1:49obligation to keep the whole law.
- 1:53You're either going to be saved by those
- 1:55rituals or you're going to be saved by
- 1:58Jesus Christ. But, you can't have both.
- 2:01You can't hybridize this.
- 2:04You have been severed
- 2:07from Christ.
- 2:10And see, that's the whole thing. If you
- 2:12are in Christ, then you are Abraham's
- 2:15seed.
- 2:16But, if you go back to the old thing
- 2:19once the new thing has come, you're
- 2:21actually cut out of Christ.
- 2:23I said at the end of chapter 3 that what
- 2:26is predestined is Christ, and the body
- 2:29of Christ is eternally secure.
- 2:31Okay? But, I said what is not
- 2:33predestined or predetermined is your
- 2:37participation and membership in it. So,
- 2:40Paul says, "You choose that, you're cut
- 2:42off from Christ." Now, if you can be cut
- 2:45off,
- 2:46you're not eternally secure.
- 2:49But, the body of Christ is, if you will
- 2:50be a part of it by the spirit through
- 2:52the spirit.
- 2:54You have been severed from Christ, you
- 2:56who are seeking to be justified
- 2:59by law. You have fallen from grace.
- 3:04So, if you can fall from grace and be
- 3:06severed from Christ, that means that
- 3:08means you belong to him and you were cut
- 3:10off of him.
- 3:13Why? Because you are seeking to be
- 3:15justified
- 3:17by law.
- 3:18It doesn't mean you're seeking to be
- 3:20obedient. Doesn't mean you're seeking to
- 3:22live godly. And that's what dishonest
- 3:25weasels twist these scriptures into.
- 3:29Paul wants obedience, but he wants the
- 3:32obedience of sons who have been born of
- 3:34the spirit. He does not want do-goodism
- 3:37that allows you to be proud of your
- 3:40religion while being severed from Christ
- 3:43in your actual walk of the spirit.
- 3:47You have been severed from Christ, you
- 3:49who are seeking to be justified
- 3:52by the law, you have fallen from grace.
- 3:55Can the law sanctify your sins? Can the
- 3:58law make you right before God? Can the
- 4:00law wash away your transgressions? No.
- 4:03No. No. No. No.
- 4:06And if you do anything that you think
- 4:08replaces what Jesus did on the cross,
- 4:10you're cut off from him.
- 4:13For we
- 4:14through the spirit by faith are waiting
- 4:18for the hope of righteousness.
- 4:20So,
- 4:21he again is contrasting it, law or
- 4:24spirit, not law or freedom in the flesh.
- 4:29Now, he does speak of a freedom there in
- 4:31the first verses. He says, "We've been
- 4:33called to freedom." What is the freedom
- 4:35he's speaking of? It's the same freedom
- 4:37he spoke of to the Romans when he said,
- 4:40"Having been freed from sin, you have
- 4:43become slaves of righteousness."
- 4:47So, the freedom that we are freed from
- 4:49is sin and self.
- 4:51And sin takes pride in the law.
- 4:54Sin takes pride in do-goodism.
- 4:58This is what he tells the Colossians. He
- 5:00said,
- 5:01"You're being You're accepting do's and
- 5:03don'ts, which to be sure have a an
- 5:06appearance of
- 5:08piety in self-imposed religion, but
- 5:11they're of no value
- 5:13against fleshly indulgence."
- 5:15So, his point is we want something that
- 5:17is more lethal against fleshly
- 5:19indulgence.
- 5:21In verse 22 of Romans 6, he says,
- 5:23"But now having been freed from sin and
- 5:26enslaved to God, you derive your benefit
- 5:30resulting in sanctification
- 5:33and the outcome, eternal life."
- 5:36So, when you're freed, when Christ has
- 5:38called you to freedom, it's freedom from
- 5:40sin. It's freedom from self. It's
- 5:43freedom from dead religion. It's freedom
- 5:46from Hagar's spirits.
- 5:49And what it's freedom to is enslavement
- 5:51to Christ, obedience to the spirit.
- 5:55And therefore, sanctification. And the
- 5:57outcome of that is eternal life.
- 6:00For we through the spirit by faith are
- 6:02waiting for the hope of righteousness.
- 6:04For in Christ Jesus,
- 6:07neither circumcision nor uncircumcision
- 6:10means anything.
- 6:13But faith
- 6:15working
- 6:16through love.
- 6:19You know what doesn't mean anything?
- 6:20Faith that doesn't work at all.
- 6:23He is not suggesting no obedience. He is
- 6:26suggesting works.
- 6:29Works from love. Faith working, the word
- 6:33there is
- 6:35shares the same root as energize.
- 6:38Faith
- 6:39energizing your love.
- 6:43Okay? That is what matters. So, we do
- 6:47not have
- 6:49sinful
- 6:50Christians on one hand who think they're
- 6:52justified
- 6:54and Judaizers on the other hand. We have
- 6:57sinful Christians and Judaizers in the
- 7:00flesh. And then we have those who are
- 7:02born of the spirit for whom faith works
- 7:06through love. And true faith always
- 7:09works.
- 7:10Faith working through love.
- 7:13You were running well.
- 7:15Notice he does not say you were sitting
- 7:17well. You were sleeping well. You were
- 7:19complacent well.
- 7:21No, you were running well. Who hindered
- 7:26you from obeying the truth?
- 7:31Paul wants us working. He wants us
- 7:33running. And he wants us obeying. And he
- 7:36doesn't want us hindered in that.
- 7:40This persuasion did not come him who
- 7:43calls you.
- 7:45A little leaven leavens the whole lump
- 7:47of dough.
- 7:48I have confidence in you in the Lord
- 7:51that you will adopt no other view, but
- 7:54the one who is disturbing you will bear
- 7:57his judgment, whoever he is.
- 8:00But I, brethren, if I still preach
- 8:02circumcision, why am I still persecuted?
- 8:06Then the stumbling block of the cross
- 8:08has been abolished. Cuz the Jews
- 8:10wouldn't hate me if I told them that
- 8:12their circumcision could still save
- 8:13them.
- 8:15Why Why would I suffer like I'm
- 8:16suffering if that if if that would work?
- 8:19But the stumbling block of the cross is
- 8:21that's no longer good enough. You stay
- 8:23in that, you're going to become part of
- 8:24Hagar.
- 8:26You need to step forward and receive the
- 8:28spirit. You need to take part of what
- 8:30happened at Pentecost. You need to
- 8:32accept what Jesus has really done for
- 8:34you and walk thereby in the new and
- 8:37living way that brings you into God,
- 8:40brings you into Christ, where Christ is
- 8:43formed in you.
- 8:47I wish that those who are troubling you
- 8:50would even mutilate themselves.
- 8:53That means he wishes they would
- 8:56do more than circumcise themselves. He
- 8:58wishes they would go all the way and
- 9:01mutilate themselves.
- 9:03>> [gasps]
- 9:03>> For you are called to freedom, brethren.
- 9:06Only Only do not turn
- 9:11your freedom into an opportunity for the
- 9:14flesh,
- 9:16but through love serve one another.
- 9:21So, the freedom that God has given us
- 9:24can be perverted.
- 9:26It can be turned
- 9:28into an opportunity to be carnal again.
- 9:31But the opposite of that and the reason
- 9:34for the freedom
- 9:36is to be able to work and live by love.
- 9:39So, opportunity for the flesh on one
- 9:42hand or
- 9:44only serve one another by love on the
- 9:47other hand.
- 9:48Are you going to live by love? That's
- 9:50what he was talking about in the
- 9:51previous chapter when he said they had a
- 9:53blessing, a sense of blessing. They were
- 9:55willing to pluck out their eyes. That's
- 9:58people driven by love.
- 10:00Legalism tells you the least you have to
- 10:02do and you take pride in it. Love
- 10:04inspires you to the most you can do and
- 10:07it's never enough because of him who
- 10:09loved you more.
- 10:12Only do not turn your freedom into an
- 10:16opportunity for the flesh.
- 10:19But through love serve one another.
- 10:24So, when he says the only thing that
- 10:25matters is faith working through love,
- 10:28that's a love toward one another.
- 10:31For the whole law is fulfilled in one
- 10:36word, in one statement.
- 10:38And he quotes, "You shall love your
- 10:42neighbor as yourself."
- 10:46Now we know what Jesus meant when he
- 10:48said not one jot will pass away from the
- 10:50law until it is fulfilled.
- 10:53Until God in the flesh hangs upon a tree
- 10:57and so loves the world
- 10:59that he does not impute our
- 11:00transgressions to us.
- 11:03But he bears in himself the just penalty
- 11:06of our transgression.
- 11:09That's the fulfillment of the law.
- 11:12The choice Jesus made on the cross.
- 11:15"You shall love your neighbor as
- 11:17yourself." Everything is fulfilled in
- 11:19that. So, when we read Romans 8 and it
- 11:22says, "By the spirit you will fulfill
- 11:24the righteous requirement of the law."
- 11:26It doesn't say you will perform all the
- 11:29ceremonial acts of the law. It says you
- 11:31will fulfill the righteous requirement
- 11:34of the law. What is the righteous
- 11:36requirement of the law? To love.
- 11:38To live your life for love. To have such
- 11:42devotion that you can accept a Paul as
- 11:45an expression of Jesus and be willing to
- 11:49do whatever it takes to help, to love,
- 11:51to serve
- 11:52each one another.
- 11:55But
- 11:57if you bite and devour one another, take
- 12:00care that you are not consumed by one
- 12:03another.
- 12:04That means you're going to be you're
- 12:05going to disappear. It's like the
- 12:07gingham dog and the calico cat.
- 12:09They're going to disappear.
- 12:11And that's what happens in a church that
- 12:13resorts to externalism, that has no
- 12:16obedience that is derived from love and
- 12:19the Holy Spirit, but it is an obedience
- 12:21that is external from the schoolmaster
- 12:24of rules only. Do you understand? They
- 12:26bite and devour.
- 12:29Everything becomes a contest of who has
- 12:31the better rules.
- 12:33You've got rubber on your buggy wheels.
- 12:35I only have steel. My suspenders split
- 12:39at 2 in above my back and yours split 2
- 12:42in below. You're not godly. What
- 12:45nonsense.
- 12:46But I say
- 12:49walk
- 12:51by
- 12:52the Spirit.
- 12:54And you will not carry out the desire
- 12:57of the flesh.
- 12:59So here we go. This is how we walk. This
- 13:02is how we fulfill. This is how we do.
- 13:05This is how we work. This is how we run
- 13:08well.
- 13:09We walk by the Spirit.
- 13:12The whole question is are you trying to
- 13:14walk by the flesh of do's and don'ts?
- 13:17Are you trying to walk by the Spirit?
- 13:19Walk by the Spirit
- 13:21and you will not carry out the desire of
- 13:23the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire
- 13:27against the spirit.
- 13:31The flesh wants to stop the spirit.
- 13:35The flesh hates the spirit.
- 13:37This powerful force that has an
- 13:40authority over all of us, the flesh
- 13:42hates it.
- 13:43Shut it up. Shut it down.
- 13:46I don't want to see it. I don't want to
- 13:47hear it.
- 13:49But, he says, "And the spirit
- 13:51against the flesh." The spirit has its
- 13:54target on the flesh. "We're going to get
- 13:56rid of you," the spirit says to the
- 13:57flesh.
- 13:59"We're going to get rid of you," the
- 14:00flesh says to the spirit. And whoever in
- 14:03a church chooses those paths is going to
- 14:05determine whether it's a church or
- 14:06whether it's a Hagar joke.
- 14:09For these are in opposition to one
- 14:11another, so that you may not do the
- 14:14things that you please.
- 14:16The things that your flesh want wants to
- 14:18do, you can't do it.
- 14:20Because you have become the servant of
- 14:22the spirit.
- 14:23You have got to accustom yourself to
- 14:26disobeying your flesh
- 14:28in order to walk in the spirit, and
- 14:30that's when Jesus is really Lord of your
- 14:31life.
- 14:33Verse 18, but if
- 14:37but if
- 14:39you are led by the spirit
- 14:43you are not under the law.
- 14:47Does that mean if you are not led by the
- 14:50spirit, you are under the law? Mhm.
- 14:54You need either a schoolmaster or the
- 14:56spirit. Schoolmaster, external
- 14:58requirements. Spirit, internal
- 15:00requirement. But, we need obedience come
- 15:03what may.
- 15:05If you are led by the spirit, you are
- 15:08not under the law.
- 15:09Now, the deeds
- 15:12notice deeds plural, many.
- 15:15Do you get that?
- 15:17Deeds, the deeds of the flesh are
- 15:20evident.
- 15:22Obedience,
- 15:24trying to live godly,
- 15:26not looking like the Oh, no, that's not
- 15:28what he says.
- 15:29That's not the flesh he's trying to save
- 15:31us from, is it?
- 15:33So, he is the whole book is spirit or
- 15:35flesh. He says, "I want you to be really
- 15:38clear. The deeds of the flesh that I'm
- 15:41trying to save you from are evident.
- 15:43Here's what they are. Now, the deeds of
- 15:45the flesh are evident, which are
- 15:47immorality,
- 15:48impurity,
- 15:50sensuality,
- 15:52idolatry,
- 15:53sorcery,
- 15:55enmities, strife,
- 15:58jealousy,
- 15:59outbursts of anger, disputes,
- 16:02dissensions, factions, envying,
- 16:06drunkenness, carousing,
- 16:10and things like these,
- 16:13of which I forewarn you,
- 16:15just as I have forewarned you, that
- 16:17those who practice such things will not
- 16:21inherit the kingdom of God."
- 16:26This is the end of antinomianism right
- 16:29here. This is where we don't have to
- 16:32wonder anymore if Paul was trying to set
- 16:35us free to live like the devil and put
- 16:38it all on Jesus.
- 16:40Paul wants to save us from this,
- 16:44and this is where the law leads you.
- 16:47When you're trying to be controlled by a
- 16:49kindergarten teacher and you're in your
- 16:5120s, you end up in a mud pie.
- 16:55Do you understand? So, this is what
- 16:57Paul's trying to save us from. He's not
- 16:59trying to save us from obedience to the
- 17:01spirit.
- 17:03Okay? This is the flesh. This is the
- 17:06nonsense. This is what you get when you
- 17:09stop living by the spirit.
- 17:12You may think it's more pious and
- 17:13religious. You scratch beneath the
- 17:15surface of all those pious do-gooder
- 17:18religions and they're full of filth and
- 17:21debauchery and fleshiness because they
- 17:24are relying on the flesh to control the
- 17:27flesh and only by the spirit can we put
- 17:30to death the deeds of the body and live.
- 17:33So he says, "You practice this garbage,
- 17:36you will not inherit the kingdom of
- 17:38God."
- 17:39So it's for freedom that God has called
- 17:41us, freedom from this garbage.
- 17:45And notice that he said the deeds of the
- 17:47flesh, many. Now listen to this, verse
- 17:5022.
- 17:52But the fruit
- 17:55of the spirit is
- 17:58not the fruits of the spirit are
- 18:02but the fruit of the spirit is.
- 18:07Well, it's like one fruit
- 18:10and in that one fruit are all these
- 18:12different sections. An orange has many
- 18:14sections, right? These are the sections
- 18:16of the one fruit of the spirit.
- 18:19They need to describe the life of a
- 18:21believer.
- 18:22And when they do, the spirit gets the
- 18:25credit. This is the evidence that you
- 18:29are not in the flesh. This is the
- 18:31evidence that you have found your
- 18:32freedom. This is the evidence that you
- 18:35are no longer enslaved. This is the
- 18:37evidence that you are born of promise.
- 18:40This is the evidence.
- 18:42It's evident.
- 18:44But the fruit of the spirit is
- 18:48love,
- 18:49joy,
- 18:52peace,
- 18:54patience,
- 18:55kindness,
- 18:57goodness,
- 18:59faithfulness,
- 19:01gentleness,
- 19:02self-control.
- 19:05Against such things
- 19:09there is
- 19:10no law.
- 19:13So when he says, "If you walk by the
- 19:14Spirit, you're not under the law," this
- 19:16is the kind of life that doesn't come
- 19:18under the law.
- 19:20Self-control.
- 19:23Self cannot control self.
- 19:26But the fruit of the Spirit is
- 19:27self-control.
- 19:28The self controlled by the Spirit
- 19:32can control
- 19:33the self.
- 19:36Now, those
- 19:38who belong to Christ Jesus
- 19:42have crucified
- 19:44the flesh with its passions and desires.
- 19:51Now, he said in chapter 3,
- 19:55"If you belong to Christ, then you are
- 19:57Abraham's descendants and heirs [music]
- 19:58according to promise."
- 20:00But now he says, "If you belong to
- 20:02Christ, you've gone through a repentance
- 20:05that is most analogous [music]
- 20:07to death on a Roman cross."
- 20:11You have put to [music] death God
- 20:13through the Spirit has empowered you to
- 20:17put to death the deeds of the body, like
- 20:19he says in Romans 8, [music] to such an
- 20:21extent that you can say, "All these
- 20:24filthy fruits over here have been
- 20:26nailed, have been pierced, have died the
- 20:29slow, naked, humiliating death on a
- 20:32cross, and they no longer control me."
- 20:38If you belong to these passions,
- 20:41you cannot belong to Christ.
- 20:43You must divorce [music] the sin nature
- 20:46in order to marry the Lord Jesus.
- 20:49You must be stolen from the possession
- 20:52of the flesh in order to be owned and
- 20:55belong as the possession [music] of
- 20:57Jesus.
- 20:59Those who belong to Christ have
- 21:02crucified the flesh with its passions
- 21:05[music] and desires.
- 21:07If we live by the Spirit, [music]
- 21:11let us also walk by the Spirit. That is
- 21:14to say, if we have our life
- 21:17in God [music] only through the Spirit,
- 21:19then you need to also walk by the
- 21:22Spirit.
- 21:23Let us [music] not become boastful,
- 21:27challenging one another,
- 21:29envying one another.
- 21:32In this he gives us three [music]
- 21:34identifiers
- 21:36of the life that needs to be crucified.
- 21:38Boasting, challenging, and envying.
