- 0:00Galatians 3, Paul has just finished his
- 0:03rebuke to Peter. [music]
- 0:04And the essence of his rebuke was
- 0:07"You're trying not to look like a pagan,
- 0:10a sinner, according to the Jews.
- 0:12>> [music]
- 0:12>> And so you're going back to the
- 0:14ceremonial law."
- 0:16But he says, "You got to be accepting
- 0:18that you're going to look like a pagan.
- 0:20You're going to look like a sinner.
- 0:22That doesn't make Christ a minister of
- 0:24sin. May it never be, of course not."
- 0:27But he's saying, "We're not going to
- 0:28build back
- 0:30what we destroyed. And what we destroyed
- 0:33was the legitimacy [music]
- 0:34of the very system that killed Jesus.
- 0:37Jesus
- 0:38>> [music]
- 0:38>> was judged lawfully by the law. Jesus
- 0:42was condemned by the law. So when he
- 0:44died, the veil of the temple was torn,
- 0:47and that whole system was done away
- 0:49with. It was over. [music]
- 0:51No longer is salvation going to be
- 0:53brokered through the Sinai covenant
- 0:56of of the law. It is going to be
- 0:58brokered through the blood of God's
- 1:00[music] sinless sacrifice."
- 1:03And he says, "I have been crucified with
- 1:05Christ. The life I live, I no longer
- 1:07live in the flesh. I live by faith in
- 1:09the Son of God who loved me and gave
- 1:11himself for me. That love on the cross
- 1:14fulfills all the law, because love
- 1:17fulfills the law." He's going to tell
- 1:18us, "I do not nullify the grace of God,
- 1:21for if righteousness comes through the
- 1:23law, then Christ died needlessly." Then
- 1:26it begins in verse 1, "You foolish
- 1:29Galatians,
- 1:31who has bewitched you?
- 1:34Before whose eyes Jesus Christ was
- 1:36publicly portrayed as crucified.
- 1:41This is the only thing I want to find
- 1:44out from you.
- 1:46The only thing.
- 1:48Did you receive the Spirit by the works
- 1:52of the law or by the hearing of faith?"
- 1:56Uh Now, is Paul's entire argument.
- 2:00He says, "You guys are becoming so
- 2:02stupid
- 2:04that it's like someone cast a witch's
- 2:06spell on you."
- 2:08Because somehow you're forgetting that
- 2:12Jesus Christ was [music] publicly
- 2:15portrayed as crucified.
- 2:18And he's saying, "That crucifixion, that
- 2:20public portrayal of the crucifixion,
- 2:23should be the final and obvious
- 2:26atonement for sin.
- 2:29You don't need anything after that. That
- 2:32covers it all, okay?"
- 2:35But the pivot,
- 2:37the main operative question,
- 2:40he says, "This is the only thing I want
- 2:43to learn from you.
- 2:45Did the law give you the spirit
- 2:49or did the hearing of faith give you the
- 2:53spirit?"
- 2:54Do you understand?
- 2:56That's what he wants to know. Because
- 2:58whichever one gave you the spirit, that
- 3:01is the one that evidences that your sins
- 3:05have actually been atoned for and the
- 3:07Father has granted you access to
- 3:10himself.
- 3:12The presence of the Holy Spirit means
- 3:14the veil has been torn, a new and living
- 3:17way has been opened, and you have
- 3:19entered
- 3:21the assurance of God's presence behind
- 3:25the veil.
- 3:26Everything that the animal sacrifices
- 3:28spoke of, the sprinkling of blood by the
- 3:31priest once a year, all of that was
- 3:34pointing toward the idea that you could
- 3:36come into the presence of God. So,
- 3:38whatever gave you the spirit, that's the
- 3:40proof. The proof is in the pudding.
- 3:42If you have the spirit, that's
- 3:45the correct path. And whatever doesn't
- 3:48bring you into the spirit is a false
- 3:50path.
- 3:52Okay? So he says, "This only This is the
- 3:55only thing I want to find out from you."
- 3:59This settles the matter.
- 4:01Did you receive the Spirit by the works
- 4:04of the law or by the hearing of faith?
- 4:06Now, they actually received the Spirit.
- 4:09For them receiving the Spirit was a
- 4:11powerful event. We're going to get to
- 4:13that in a minute. It wasn't an assumed
- 4:16reality that had no event. It was a
- 4:18powerful transformative event. So Paul
- 4:21is saying,
- 4:22"How did you get it?
- 4:23By hearing the law?
- 4:26By obeying the law or by the hearing of
- 4:28faith?
- 4:29Are you so foolish, verse three? Having
- 4:32begun by the Spirit, are you now being
- 4:36perfected by the flesh?
- 4:40Did you suffer so many things in vain,
- 4:43if indeed it was in vain?
- 4:46To be perfected by the flesh is to say,
- 4:49"I believe what Jesus did, I received
- 4:52the baptism of the Spirit, but now I'm
- 4:54going to go do the law to finish it
- 4:56out."
- 4:58So then, does he who provides you with
- 5:03the Spirit and works miracles among you
- 5:07do it by the works of the law or by the
- 5:09hearing of faith?
- 5:11This is his question.
- 5:13The God who works miracles among you
- 5:17and provides you with the Spirit, how
- 5:19does he do it?
- 5:20Do you get that Spirit by washing your
- 5:24cups and circumcising and all this
- 5:26stuff, or do you do it by the hearing of
- 5:29faith?
- 5:30So if Paul says this to a church
- 5:33that has a powerful presence of the Holy
- 5:36Spirit in their meetings,
- 5:38where miracles are still happening,
- 5:41and he says,
- 5:43"How is God working those miracles?
- 5:46Are you seeing that move of the Holy
- 5:48Spirit when you start observing the law
- 5:50more carefully?
- 5:51Or do you see that
- 5:53when you
- 5:55believe and accept and have faith in
- 5:57what Jesus is doing?
- 6:00They would be like, "Well, now when we
- 6:02think about it,
- 6:03we didn't really get the outpouring of
- 6:05the spirit when we were doing the law.
- 6:08That didn't nothing change in our
- 6:09church. There were no miracles in our
- 6:11church. But when we received what Jesus
- 6:14had done, had faith to approach the
- 6:16throne of grace by a new and living way,
- 6:18that's when everybody started receiving
- 6:20the Holy Spirit. That's when miracles
- 6:22started working."
- 6:24Do you see how he he would be reasoning?
- 6:26So, Paul is saying,
- 6:27"Guys, just just answer the question.
- 6:30Which one gave you the power of the
- 6:31spirit?
- 6:33And if it wasn't the law, stop acting
- 6:35like that's what you need. Because
- 6:37whatever is real salvation, whatever is
- 6:39real atonement, whatever is real
- 6:42justification, it's going to deliver you
- 6:45into the power of the spirit. If it
- 6:47doesn't, it has not done the atoning
- 6:50work.
- 6:51If you're not passing through the veil
- 6:53into the assurance of his presence
- 6:55behind the veil, then you have not
- 6:58experienced the atonement on the level
- 7:00he wants you to.
- 7:02So then,
- 7:03does he who provides you with the spirit
- 7:05and works miracles among you do it by
- 7:07the works of the law or by the hearing
- 7:09of faith?
- 7:10Even so, Abraham believed God, and it
- 7:14was reckoned to him as righteousness.
- 7:16So, he's going, "Let's go back before
- 7:18Sinai.
- 7:19And let's attach what God is doing in
- 7:21the New Testament church to what started
- 7:24with Abraham."
- 7:25Paul doesn't spin much attachment. He
- 7:27doesn't make much connection to what
- 7:29happened at Sinai. That was a temporary
- 7:32season for a purpose. But instead, he
- 7:34attaches to the promises made to
- 7:36Abraham.
- 7:37He says, "Even so, Abraham believed God,
- 7:40and it, his belief, was reckoned to him
- 7:42as righteousness. Therefore, be sure
- 7:46that it is those who are of faith who
- 7:48are sons of Abraham.
- 7:50So, he says, "Even if you want to be
- 7:52real Jews,
- 7:53you've got to be people of faith.
- 7:56If you want to be a son of Abraham, you
- 7:57need to be a person of real faith.
- 8:00The scripture foreseeing that God would
- 8:02justify the Gentiles by faith preached
- 8:05the gospel beforehand to Abraham saying,
- 8:08"All the nations will be blessed in
- 8:10you."
- 8:11So, that statement was the gospel.
- 8:14I'm going to help all people through
- 8:16you.
- 8:17So, now he's going to show us how
- 8:20we are helped through Abraham.
- 8:22So then, those who are of faith are
- 8:25blessed with Abraham, the believer.
- 8:29So, if you walk in faith, if you learn
- 8:32from Abraham how to move in faith, you
- 8:35can fulfill that promise and be one of
- 8:37the families that is blessed
- 8:39through Abraham.
- 8:40>> [clears throat]
- 8:41>> For as many as are of the works of the
- 8:43law are under a curse.
- 8:46Whoever is still under the works of the
- 8:48law is not blessed.
- 8:50For it is written, "Cursed is everyone
- 8:52who does not abide by all things written
- 8:55in the book of the law to perform them."
- 8:57So, he says, "Ev- Everybody who's trying
- 8:59to do the law is under a curse. Why?
- 9:01Because if you don't do all of it,
- 9:02you're cursed and nobody can do all of
- 9:04it."
- 9:06Now, that no one is justified by the law
- 9:09before God is evident.
- 9:11For the righteous man shall live by
- 9:13faith.
- 9:15It's plain and evident that nobody's
- 9:17justified by the works of the law.
- 9:20And he quotes the the Old Testament from
- 9:22Habakkuk. He says, "The righteous man
- 9:25shall live by faith."
- 9:28So, he's like, "You're not going to be
- 9:29okay by keeping everything of the law.
- 9:32You're going to be okay
- 9:33by walking in faith." The whole question
- 9:36here becomes what is faith?
- 9:38Abraham is our definition of faith.
- 9:41Hebrews 11 and the heroes of faith are
- 9:43our definition of faith. Faith is not
- 9:47just mental ascent.
- 9:49It's not just agreeing in your head.
- 9:51Faith is being so persuaded that your
- 9:54entire life is rearranged.
- 9:57Faith is evidenced by the fruit that
- 9:59follows when God is [snorts] providing
- 10:01you with the Holy Spirit and working
- 10:02miracles among you.
- 10:04Do you understand? So just claiming
- 10:06faith is not necessarily faith. The
- 10:09evidence was not how did you get faith?
- 10:12He says this only I want to learn from
- 10:14you, how did you get the spirit?
- 10:17Do you understand? So evangelicals have
- 10:20perverted this and they're like, how did
- 10:22you just get faith? No, faith is not the
- 10:24point. Faith is the means by which you
- 10:27come into relationship with God.
- 10:29And the word faith should just be
- 10:31translated as a trusting relationship of
- 10:34ongoing obedience to God.
- 10:39The righteous man shall live by faith,
- 10:41by a real trusting
- 10:44relationship of obedience to God.
- 10:46However, the law is not of faith, on the
- 10:49contrary, he who practices them shall
- 10:52live by them. The law isn't by faith.
- 10:55You don't have to have a good attitude
- 10:57toward God. You don't have to have
- 10:59belief in God. You have to have
- 11:01confidence that if you practice them,
- 11:04you will live by them. And he's quoting
- 11:06the Old Testament when he says that.
- 11:08Christ redeemed us from the curse of the
- 11:10law, having become a curse for us, for
- 11:13it is written, "Cursed is everyone who
- 11:15hangs upon a tree," in order that in
- 11:18Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham
- 11:20might come to the Gentiles, so that we
- 11:23would receive the promise of the Spirit
- 11:27through faith.
- 11:29Why did Christ become a curse for us? So
- 11:33that we could receive the Spirit through
- 11:35faith.
- 11:37So he said, "I am going to absorb in
- 11:39myself the impossibility of the whole
- 11:42law. I'm going to let the law kill me,
- 11:45and in that I'm going to show that the
- 11:47law is nullified. It's done away with
- 11:50because it just killed an only sinless
- 11:52man. It no longer has the right to exert
- 11:56its claim on anybody else cuz look what
- 11:58the law just did."
- 12:00It was brokered through
- 12:02imperfect vessels. It was brokered
- 12:05through the elders and rulers, the
- 12:07fleshly minds of the Jewish people, and
- 12:11they crucified Jesus.
- 12:13And the law had become the weapon of the
- 12:15devil. It was a schoolmaster to point us
- 12:18toward faith and Christ, but it had
- 12:20become a weapon of the devil. So Jesus
- 12:22nullified it, and he put it out of the
- 12:24way.
- 12:25Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a
- 12:27tree.
- 12:28All of our sin was placed under that
- 12:31curse. Jesus suffered judgment for us.
- 12:36Jesus suffered the punishment of hell
- 12:39for us.
- 12:41So that when we place ourselves in him,
- 12:44all the all the judgment we deserve and
- 12:47that points toward us because of our
- 12:49sin, he has experienced at the cross.
- 12:54Brethren, I speak in terms of human
- 12:56relations even though it is only a man's
- 12:59covenant. Yet,
- 13:01when it has been ratified, no one sets
- 13:04it aside or adds conditions to it.
- 13:07He's speaking about like a covenant like
- 13:09a human covenant like a last will and
- 13:11testament. He says, "Once a last will
- 13:14and testament has been ratified, once
- 13:16you've signed it, nobody can add to it
- 13:18after you're dead. They can't put more
- 13:21conditions on it, right?"
- 13:23He says, "Now the promises were spoken
- 13:26to Abraham
- 13:28and to his seed.
- 13:31Can you all say seed?
- 13:33And Paul says, he does not say and to
- 13:37his seeds
- 13:40as referring to many, but rather to one
- 13:44and to your seed, that is Christ.
- 13:52Done da da da done.
- 13:53The promises of blessing, of the gospel,
- 13:57were spoken to Abraham and his seed.
- 14:02Now, let's just ask right there,
- 14:05who was Abraham's seed?
- 14:08Isaac was his seed.
- 14:10Isaac was the one who was born to
- 14:12Abraham and none of his other children
- 14:16were blessed, were they? Was Ishmael
- 14:18Abraham's seed?
- 14:20Were any of Abraham's other children
- 14:23heirs? Were they his seed? Did the
- 14:25blessing attach to them? No, they did
- 14:27not. No, the blessings did not attach to
- 14:29them one bit.
- 14:31How In what way was Isaac born that was
- 14:35so special from the other children that
- 14:37Abraham begat?
- 14:39He was born supernaturally.
- 14:42He was born by a visitation from God.
- 14:46When God appeared
- 14:49and spoke to Abraham,
- 14:51right? Sarah's womb was as good as dead,
- 14:57Paul says, and Abraham was too old to
- 14:59beget children.
- 15:01So, what we're saying is that in their
- 15:03flesh, they could not bring to birth
- 15:06anything.
- 15:09And what did the Lord promise to Sarah?
- 15:13At this time
- 15:16I will return.
- 15:18God will come
- 15:20and Sarah will have a son.
- 15:23So, it's a supernatural birth
- 15:27to people who couldn't do it in their
- 15:28flesh.
- 15:31So, when he says the promises were made
- 15:33to Abraham and his seed, he's saying the
- 15:36promises were made to Abraham and to
- 15:39those who are born by the spirit.
- 15:42Isaac was a type of those who would be
- 15:45born by the spirit. First and foremost,
- 15:48Jesus, who was the firstborn of many
- 15:51brethren. How was Jesus born?
- 15:54What did the What did the angel tell
- 15:56Joseph in Matthew 1:20 and 21? Do not be
- 16:00afraid to take Mary as your wife because
- 16:02that which is conceived in her is what?
- 16:06Of the Holy Spirit.
- 16:08So, Jesus was born of the spirit, but he
- 16:11said unless we're born of water and
- 16:12spirit, we cannot enter the kingdom of
- 16:14God. So, he was the firstborn, but not
- 16:16the lastborn of the spirit. All who are
- 16:19born of the spirit are born of God, are
- 16:21born of Christ,
- 16:23>> [clears throat]
- 16:23>> have Christ in them.
- 16:25So, it's the
- 16:27the promise of blessing, the predestined
- 16:31promise attaches to Abraham and his
- 16:35seed,
- 16:36which is to say the one born of the
- 16:39spirit.
- 16:40Okay?
- 16:41So, whoever is born of the spirit gets
- 16:45the promise, the predestined promise
- 16:47that attaches to that.
- 16:49If you're of the spirit, you have the
- 16:51predestined promise of salvation
- 16:53pointing towards you. If you're not of
- 16:55the spirit, you don't have that.
- 16:58So, he says to Abraham and his seed as
- 17:01referring to one, not to many.
- 17:04What I am saying is this,
- 17:07the law which came 430
- 17:10years later does not invalidate a
- 17:13covenant previously ratified by God so
- 17:17as to nullify the promise. So, he says,
- 17:20"The ceremonial law was not in the
- 17:22picture.
- 17:23It came 430 years after the salvation
- 17:26covenant was made with Abraham and his
- 17:29seed.
- 17:30Okay? And that ceremonial law from Sinai
- 17:33was a temporary stint.
- 17:36It had a purpose, but it was not the big
- 17:38picture. You ultimately can't add
- 17:41anything to the promise made to Abraham.
- 17:44Okay?
- 17:45For if the inheritance is based on the
- 17:47law, it is no longer based on a promise,
- 17:50but God has granted it to Abraham by
- 17:53means of a promise.
- 17:57Why the law then?
- 17:59It was added because of transgression.
- 18:04The law did not have a permanent place
- 18:08in God's plan.
- 18:09It was a temporary add-on because the
- 18:13kids were so bad.
- 18:15It was time out. It was go sit in your
- 18:17room.
- 18:18Not because that was the plan for child
- 18:21rearing, but because the transgressions
- 18:23got so bad. Do you understand? So, the
- 18:26law was not God's plan. It was added
- 18:30because of transgression, having been
- 18:33ordained through angels by the agency of
- 18:38a mediator until the seed would come to
- 18:42whom the promise had been made.
- 18:45So, we've got a promise made to a seed,
- 18:49and we got the absence of a seed. So,
- 18:51until the seed can come again, the
- 18:53promise can't attach
- 18:56to anything but the seed. All right? So,
- 18:58we got a lot of transgression, and the
- 19:00law is added. And Paul tells us who the
- 19:04law was given through. Who was the law
- 19:06given through? It was ordained not
- 19:09through God in his essential heart. It
- 19:12wasn't the Lord coming down and saying,
- 19:14"This is the the revelation of my love
- 19:16for you." It was ordained through angels
- 19:19and through a mediator. So, we've got
- 19:23Moses and angels. Why does Paul tell us
- 19:26that the law was an add-on and that it
- 19:29was given through angels and a mediator?
- 19:31Cuz he's trying to tell us it's not
- 19:33really a manifestation of God's
- 19:36essential nature.
- 19:37God's essential nature is promise and
- 19:40love.
- 19:41But he needed to bring in this law. He
- 19:43needed to bring restrictions to the bad
- 19:45kids
- 19:47because of their real bad behavior. It
- 19:49was an add-on because of transgression
- 19:51until the seed could come.
- 19:54But as soon as the seed can come, as
- 19:56soon as the promise can come, in short,
- 19:58as soon as the Holy Spirit can come to a
- 20:01church again, then the promises of
- 20:03Abraham can attach to those who are born
- 20:06like Isaac was born of the spirit.
- 20:10Okay, having been ordained through
- 20:12angels by the agency of a mediator
- 20:14mediator until the seed could come to
- 20:17whom the promise had been made. Now, a
- 20:19mediator is not for one party only,
- 20:22whereas God is only one.
- 20:24Hmm, that's quite a statement from the
- 20:26Apostle Paul. God is only one.
- 20:30Ding ding ding ding.
- 20:32Is the law then contrary to the promises
- 20:35of God?
- 20:36May it never be.
- 20:38The law wasn't contrary. It didn't stop
- 20:40the promises.
- 20:42It was actually holding people over.
- 20:45It was a tide me over. May it never be.
- 20:47For if a law had been given which was
- 20:49able to impart life,
- 20:53that's the spirit again, then
- 20:55righteousness would indeed have been
- 20:57based on the law. But the scripture has
- 21:00shut up everyone under sin so that the
- 21:03promise by faith in Jesus Christ might
- 21:06be given to those who believe.
- 21:10But before faith came, we were kept in
- 21:13custody
- 21:15under the law, being shut up to the
- 21:18faith which was later to be revealed. We
- 21:21were in custody. Hold these people in
- 21:24custody. What does custody mean? That
- 21:26means under arrest.
- 21:29We were shut up in custody until faith
- 21:32could come. So it's like the Lord said,
- 21:35"I got this whole congregation of
- 21:37Israel. I want to put them in custody.
- 21:39How long should they be in custody?
- 21:41Until the spirit can come, until faith
- 21:43can come. And as soon as faith can come,
- 21:45we'll unbind the law cuz the law was
- 21:47just to tide people over until they
- 21:49could encounter God through the spirit.
- 21:55But before faith came, we were kept in
- 21:57custody under the law, being shut up to
- 21:59the faith which was later to be
- 22:01revealed. Therefore, the law has become
- 22:03our tutor.
- 22:06That's like our our mean school teacher
- 22:09who is able to whip us if we misbehave.
- 22:12Our tutor to lead us to Christ
- 22:15so that we may be justified by faith.
- 22:19But now that faith has come, we are no
- 22:22longer under a tutor.
- 22:25We are no longer under a tutor. We don't
- 22:27need a tutor. Do you stay in school your
- 22:30entire life? Let's hope not. There's a
- 22:32graduation moment. And the graduation
- 22:34moment is when faith comes into your
- 22:36heart, when you actually trust God and
- 22:39through that trust can come into the
- 22:40presence of God, the God who works
- 22:43miracles among you and provides you with
- 22:45the spirit. And if that power and
- 22:48presence comes into your life, then that
- 22:50was the whole point.
- 22:54For you are all sons of God through
- 22:56faith in Christ Jesus.
- 22:59For all who are baptized into Christ
- 23:04have clothed yourself with Christ.
- 23:08>> [snorts]
- 23:08>> To be immersed at baptism, water baptism
- 23:12plunges you into Christ.
- 23:15He says to the Corinthians, you were
- 23:17baptized into Moses through the cloud
- 23:19and through the sea, but we are baptized
- 23:21into Christ.
- 23:23Salvation is not found outside of
- 23:25Christ. Salvation is not found outside
- 23:27of him, by him, or because of him. It is
- 23:30found in him. You need to be inside of
- 23:33him. And baptism plunges you, it
- 23:36immerses you into Christ.
- 23:39For all who were baptized into Christ
- 23:43have clothed yourselves
- 23:45with Christ. You've put on the Lord
- 23:48Jesus. You've clothed yourself with
- 23:50Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek.
- 23:52There is neither slave nor free man.
- 23:55There is neither male nor female. You
- 23:58are all one in Christ. You are all one.
- 24:02He doesn't say
- 24:05when he says there's neither slave nor
- 24:06free, he says there's not many.
- 24:09Your old identity, you don't have any
- 24:11longer. You don't have a Gentile
- 24:13identity. You don't have a Jewish
- 24:14identity. You don't have a slave
- 24:16identity, a male identity, a female
- 24:18identity. If you've been immersed, you
- 24:21have one identity. It's Christ.
- 24:25You are all one in Christ. That's the
- 24:28main point he's making. So, the
- 24:30difference is not
- 24:32that you used to be this and you're now
- 24:34that. It's that you used to be many and
- 24:38you're now one.
- 24:40There's salvation in only one place.
- 24:44Do you understand? You are now one in
- 24:46Christ. Now, here's where it gets
- 24:47exciting.
- 24:50And if you belong
- 24:53to Christ, so to be baptized into Christ
- 24:56is to
- 24:57sell yourself, to be purchased by
- 24:59Christ. If it's to be belong to belong
- 25:01to Christ.
- 25:03If you belong to Christ,
- 25:06then you
- 25:09are Abraham's descendants, heirs
- 25:13according to promise.
- 25:14Now, the word here is translated as
- 25:17descendants,
- 25:18but that's a mistranslation.
- 25:20It's the same word he used when he said
- 25:25that the promise was made to Abraham and
- 25:27his seed, not referring to many, but to
- 25:31one. Well, that's the same word he uses
- 25:33here. He says, "Because you're one,
- 25:36you are Abraham's seed." One seed is
- 25:41what the Greek is here. You are
- 25:42Abraham's one seed. You are Abraham's
- 25:45heir according to promise.
- 25:48In short, Jesus is who's predestined.
- 25:52Jesus is the predestined saved one. And
- 25:56if you are immersed and clothed in
- 25:59Jesus, then you are Abraham's seed.
- 26:03Because you're not a slave, you're not
- 26:05free, you're not male, you're not
- 26:07female, you're just one
- 26:09if you're in Christ. And Christ is
- 26:12Abraham's seed.
- 26:14He doesn't have many seeds, so this is
- 26:15mistranslated here. And of course, this
- 26:18is a perfect parallel to what Paul says
- 26:21in Romans 9 and uh
- 26:25and 7 and 8, you know, the the familiar
- 26:28passage there where he says,
- 26:30Romans 9:6,
- 26:33"But it is not as though the word of God
- 26:35has failed. For they are not all Israel
- 26:38who are descended from Israel, nor are
- 26:41they all children because they are
- 26:43Abraham's seed,
- 26:46but through Isaac, your seed will be
- 26:49named.
- 26:51That is, it is not the children of the
- 26:54flesh who are children of God, but the
- 26:56children of the promise are regarded as
- 27:00descendants or seed. It's the same word.
- 27:04So, the whole question is,
- 27:07are you a child through the promise of
- 27:11the Spirit
- 27:12or through the works of the law? What
- 27:14did Jesus call the outpouring and
- 27:17baptism of the Spirit on the day of
- 27:19Pentecost? What did he call it before it
- 27:21came?
- 27:23Tarry in Jerusalem until [music] you
- 27:25receive the
- 27:27promise of my father.
- 27:30Wait in Jerusalem until you [music]
- 27:32receive what the Father has promised.
- 27:36What did Peter call it? For God has
- 27:38poured forth this which you now see
- 27:41>> [music]
- 27:41>> and hear, for the promise is for you and
- 27:46for your children.
- 27:47And what did the writer of Hebrews call
- 27:49it? These all died in faith, not having
- 27:52received what [music] was
- 27:53promised.
- 27:55So, the promise is that we [music] can
- 27:58be born of the Holy Spirit. Whatever
- 28:01gets us that is faith.
- 28:04And that
- 28:05reality of life in the Spirit is how we
- 28:08should judge our walk with God.
- 28:10If our works of the law give us a
- 28:13baptism of the Spirit, a God who works
- 28:16miracles and provides us with the
- 28:17Spirit, great. Let's keep doing that.
- 28:20But if they don't, let's go back to what
- 28:22gives us that because that is the point.
- 28:25That's how [music] we are immersed.
- 28:27We're baptized by one Spirit into one
- 28:30body. That's how we're clothed with
- 28:31Christ and become part of that one
- 28:34predestined seed
- 28:37that is Jesus.
- 28:38Jesus is what is eternally secure. The
- 28:41body of Christ is eternally [music]
- 28:43secure. It's eternally predestined. Your
- 28:46membership in it is in question.
- 28:48That's why he's saying that they could
- 28:50fall from grace. You could depart and
- 28:53rebuild what God tore down.
- 28:56But we can also stay in him,
- 28:58be found in him, not having a
- 29:00righteousness of our own.
- 29:04>> [music]
