- 6:56You paid off my loan.
- 7:00>> It was nothing.
- 7:02>> That was my dad's heart.

- 7:22>> May I walk you to your bus?
- 7:26>> [sighs]
- 7:29>> Who sends that kind of money back?
- 7:33May I send dinner to your floor?

- 7:41>> She said ask.
- 7:43>> Your car.
- 7:44>> Your [snorts] car.

- 8:02>> You've got 4 minutes.
- 8:04>> Then I'll talk fast.
- 8:06>> [laughter]
- 8:15[cough]
- 8:26>> 101.
- 8:28Three nights out here in the cold and
- 8:30now you're running a fever.
- 8:32Whoever's paying you isn't paying you
- 8:33enough.
- 8:37Chicken soup. Bring the thermos back
- 8:39when you're done.
- 8:41And tell your boss
- 8:43if he wants to keep an eye on me
- 8:45he can ask.
- 8:55>> Okay, Marchetti. You and me are going to
- 8:57talk about your little friend across the
- 9:09>> front. Please.
- 9:14I didn't know where else to go.
- 9:16>> Whose seat is this, Luca?
- 9:20>> My daughter's.
- 9:23It was her sixth birthday.
- 9:27She'd been begging to ride up front for
- 9:28a year and I always said no.
- 9:31That night she says "Birthday girl gets
- 9:33the front seat, Daddy."
- 9:35Four blocks.
- 9:36I said yes.
- 9:38Red light on Ashland.
- 9:41A car pulls up next to us.
- 9:43The cost is
- 9:47She got hit in the shoulder.
- 9:49She lived.
- 9:53I had every window replaced.
- 9:55Kept the sticker.
- 9:58Next morning I signed her away.
- 10:01Her mother took her home to Evanston.
- 10:03New last name.
- 10:08Arthur said a man with a kid is a man on
- 10:10a leash.
- 10:11He wasn't wrong.
- 10:15She turned 12 today.
- 10:18I drove up to Ridgeview Middle School by
- 10:19myself.
- 10:22Every birthday
- 10:24I park across from wherever she is.
- 10:27Six years and I've never once gotten out
- 10:30of the car.
- 10:34That's why my hands were shaking that
- 10:36night.
- 10:37Tommy got hit at a red light.
- 10:48>> What's her name?
- 10:51>> Sophia.
- 10:53>> Tell me about her.
- 10:55>> She kicks with her left.
- 10:58Ties her laces twice around before she
- 11:00knots them.
- 11:02Laughs with her whole body.
- 11:04I could see that from across the street.
- 11:12>> That's how you tie yours.
- 11:14>> [sighs and snorts]
- 11:17>> Next birthday you get out of the car.
- 11:21>> I don't know how.
- 11:23>> Then I'll sit right here while you
- 11:24figure it out.
- 11:29Luca
- 11:31the man with the Canali.
- 11:33He lied in that room.
- 11:35>> Arthur?
- 11:39>> I can't tell you about my patient's
- 11:40night. That's Tommy's to tell.
- 11:43But I can tell you what I saw with my
- 11:45own eyes.
- 11:48You got the text he was out of surgery.
- 11:50We pulled out and Arthur's car pulled
- 11:53in.
- 11:554:40.
- 11:56>> [music]
- 11:57>> You were watching the road.
- 11:59I was watching the window.
- 12:03He said he signed the forms before they
- 12:04took Tommy up.
- 12:06When Tommy wakes up,
- 12:08ask him who did.
- 12:14>> Arthur's the only one of my people who
- 12:16knows where Sofia is.
- 12:18Six years and she's been safe.
- 12:20>> Then checking won't cost you anything.
- 12:27>> Gus will take you home.
- 12:37Nice school. Evanston's a long drive.
- 12:40Gus,
- 12:41two cars up to Ridgeview, now.
- 12:48It's me.
- 12:50I know.
- 12:51Six years.
- 12:53Listen to me. Don't let her walk home
- 12:54this week. My people are outside the
- 12:56school. I'll explain.
- 13:07Somebody told the Castas' son.
- 13:09Six years and nobody knew.
- 13:12Did you tell the nurse about Sofia? The
- 13:15school?
- 13:17Yes.
- 13:20You paid off her loan and she sent it
- 13:22back.
- 13:24I keep the books. I saw both. Smart
- 13:27girl.
- 13:28Then on Tuesday the Costa's paid it off
- 13:32one of their companies have Gus check.
- 13:38>> It's real boss.
- 13:43>> Costa's people made the payment.
- 13:45>> [clears throat]
- 13:46>> They did. I drove your cash over myself.
- 13:51You said nobody was going to go near the
- 13:52kid.
- 13:53>> And nobody will
- 13:55not once Luca stops being sentimental.
- 14:00Sunday dinner you tell the table you saw
- 14:02the nurse with Costa's people.
- 14:06By Christmas the families will want a
- 14:08man without a leash at the head of that
- 14:10table.
- 14:12>> [cough]
- 14:21>> You did it again. I told you to ask me.
- 14:24>> I didn't pay it.
- 14:26The Costa's did
- 14:28and they sent me this.
- 14:29Sofia's school.
- 14:35You're the only person I ever told about
- 14:37that school Nina.
- 14:44>> You think I gave away where your
- 14:45daughter goes to school
- 14:47for a loan?
- 14:49I sent your money back Luca. Why would I
- 14:51keep theirs?
- 14:55You get to be scared for her.
- 14:57You don't get to be scared of me.
- 15:02The second payment I want it sent back.
- 15:05I don't care who it came from it's not
- 15:06mine.
- 15:12If Luca didn't pay it
- 15:15then who sent that guy outside my
- 15:16window?
- 15:22>> Tommy's awake. He's asking for you.
- 15:25>> [sighs]
- 15:27>> Night before I got shot,
- 15:29I'm outside the Pincer's office.
- 15:32He's on with Joe Costa.
- 15:34Gives him a school up in Evanton.
- 15:37I figured it was business.
- 15:41Then he sees me in the doorway.
- 15:43Says,
- 15:44"The kid heard me.
- 15:46Handle it."
- 15:49Next night, they get me at the light.
- 15:54>> Who signed your forms?
- 15:57>> Me.
- 15:58A nurse held the killed bird. Nobody
- 15:59else was there.
- 16:05>> Arthur gave the Costas that school
- 16:07before Nina ever got in your car.
- 16:12And he paid off that loan to hang it on
- 16:14her.
- 16:15He couldn't get past our guys at this
- 16:17door.
- 16:19So, he needed somebody to blame before
- 16:20Tommy wake up.
- 16:24>> I'm telling the cops, boss. They shot
- 16:26me.
- 16:27>> [panting]
- 16:31>> Then tell them everything.
- 16:33And tell them where he'll be Sunday at
- 16:341:00.
- 16:38>> You want me to go get him?
- 16:40>> No.
- 16:42The families listen to Arthur.
- 16:44They hear it Sunday at the table in
- 16:46front of everybody.
- 16:49Ask the hospital for a secure room and
- 16:51an alias for Tommy.
- 16:53>> Hillary, heart signature, first station.
- 16:58>> I was wrong.
- 16:59Sunday, at my family's table, I stop
- 17:02hiding.
- 17:03You don't have to come. I'm asking.
- 17:07Gus is downstairs. If you don't want him
- 17:09there, wave him off.
- 17:22>> What's this?
- 17:25>> Let him up, Gus. He's bringing back my
- 17:26thermos.
- 17:32>> Name's Benny.
- 17:34>> [clears throat]
- 17:34>> Don't go tomorrow.
- 17:38>> Keep it. You're still coughing.
- 17:41And tell Mr. Marchenko I'm going.
- 17:45>> Mr. Marchenko is not my boss. Never was.
- 17:53>> Hey, that's Kanes' driver.
- 18:00>> I thought Luca sent him.
- 18:02>> Boss doesn't send kids. He sends me.
- 18:12For 6 years,
- 18:14our boss has been hiding a daughter.
- 18:17You all know what I've always said.
- 18:21A man with a child
- 18:23is a man on a leash.
- 18:29>> [clears throat]
- 18:30>> I have one.
- 18:31Her name is Sofia.
- 18:33And somebody handed that child's school
- 18:36to the Costas.
- 18:38Luca told that nurse where his daughter
- 18:40goes to school.
- 18:41The Costas paid off her loan on Tuesday.
- 18:44She's the traitor.
- 18:46And I have a witness.
- 18:53Before anybody says a word,
- 18:56Thursday,
- 18:57I asked for the same thing,
- 18:59and I was wrong.
- 19:01Everybody in this city reads my face.
- 19:04She's the only one who ever read my
- 19:05hands.
- 19:14Whatever happens at this table,
- 19:16I'm standing right here.
- 19:18>> Over the professor?
- 19:20>> Yes.
- 19:22>> Sit down, Luca.
- 19:24Let me.
- 19:32>> [snorts]
- 19:33>> Paid in full.
- 19:34Twice.
- 19:35Once by him, once by somebody who wanted
- 19:37everybody at this table to see it.
- 19:40I sent them both back.
- 19:42Benny,
- 19:44you stood outside my window three nights
- 19:46running.
- 19:47You've still got my thermos.
- 19:49Tell them what you saw.
- 20:00>> Mr. Cain told me nobody would go near
- 20:02that little girl.
- 20:04He had me drive him up to Evanston to
- 20:05look at her school.
- 20:08I drove the money for the nurse's loan
- 20:09to Kostas guy myself.
- 20:13And he told me to stand up here and say
- 20:15I saw this lady with Kostas people.
- 20:19I never did.
- 20:24What I saw was her carrying soup across
- 20:26the street to the guy who was spying on
- 20:28her.
- 20:30>> [cough and clears throat]
- 20:32>> I'll drive you anywhere, Mr. Cain.
- 20:35I won't help you hurt a kid.
- 20:37And I won't lie about her.
- 20:42>> The boy's been sick all week.
- 20:44He doesn't know what he's saying.
- 20:48>> You told me you signed Tommy's forms,
- 20:50Arthur.
- 20:52He signed them himself.
- 20:56You pulled in at 4:40 to find out if he
- 20:58could still talk.
- 21:00He can.
- 21:06The night before they shot him,
- 21:08he heard you give Joe Costa that school.
- 21:11A whole day
- 21:13before she ever sat in my car.
- 21:17The kid heard me
- 21:19handle it.
- 21:21So, they shot Tommy at a red light.
- 21:25Same as my daughter.
- 21:32>> [snorts]
- 21:36>> Oldest rule there is.
- 21:39You don't touch the kids. Every family
- 21:41at this table looks after that little
- 21:43girl now.
- 21:45Joe Costa hears it from me tonight.
- 21:47Cops.
- 21:52>> I'm not doing to you what you do to me.
- 21:54That's what changed.
- 22:05>> Careful whose car you get into, Arthur.
- 22:14>> I put you in Sofia's seat.
- 22:17And then I looked at you like you were a
- 22:18Costa.
- 22:23>> And I was mad at you all week over a guy
- 22:25you never even sent.
- 22:28We're both bad at this.
- 22:32I'm not something you park somewhere
- 22:34safe, Luca.
- 22:36I've got a job, a mother, and a loan
- 22:39with my name on it. I'm keeping all
- 22:41three.
- 22:44>> Then I'll keep asking.
- 22:45You'll get sick of it.
- 22:48>> Then ask her.
- 22:52Sofia,
- 22:53you've been walking past her for 6
- 22:54years.
- 22:59>> Sofia. her.
- 23:05>> Her mother just called back. Sophie has
- 23:07been asking about the black car across
- 23:08the street every birthday since she was
- 23:108.
- 23:11>> [sighs]
- 23:15>> Will you come with me?
- 23:17>> Front seat.
- 23:25>> It's not even her birthday.
- 23:28>> Good.
- 23:29You've sat through enough of those.
- 23:32I said I'd sit right here. I'm sitting
- 23:34right here.
- 23:35Faces lie, hands don't. You want this.
- 23:40>> [sighs]
- 23:50>> You're the black car.
- 23:54>> I'm the black car.
- 24:04>> Please, just drive me home. I've been on
- 24:06my feet for 20 hours.
- 24:09>> Sophie says you're coming to her game
- 24:11Saturday. That's not a question. She's
- 24:13like you.
- 24:18You know, you could sit in the back now.
- 24:21>> I get carsick.
- 24:23>> I know.
- 24:29That seat was hers.
- 24:31I'd like it to be yours, too.
- 24:35At least till she's old enough to fight
- 24:36you for it.
- 24:40I'm asking.
- 24:44>> [laughter]
- 24:46[snorts]
- 24:52>> Hours drive.
- 24:5928 29, 30. Shock him.
- 25:03>> We've got a rhythm.
- 25:07>> Thank you.
- 25:15>> Somebody else take bed four.
- 25:18>> You just brought him back.
- 25:19>> Somebody else.
- 25:24>> Have we
- 25:25met?
- 25:27>> Reassign me, please.
- 25:31>> Three nurses called out sick. He's yours
- 25:33till 7:00.
- 25:36>> Kowalski's never turned down a patient?
- 25:43>> I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 25:45>> Don't touch me.
- 25:47Six years ago, a man collapsed on the
- 25:49Lake Street platform.
- 25:51He lay there 4 minutes.
- 25:5332 people walked around him.
- 25:56I've watched that video so many times. I
- 25:57know every face.
- 25:59You were number 17.
- 26:01Brown coat.
- 26:06He was my father.
- 26:08>> Kowalski, my office. Now.
- 26:17Reputed crime boss Luca Marcelli and her
- 26:19fiance, an emergency nurse at Lakeview
- 26:21General.
- 26:23That's you.
- 26:24>> I've read it.
- 26:28>> A nurse who picks her patients.
- 26:30And the papers say she picks mob bosses,
- 26:32too.
- 26:38Tonight, you brought a man back, and in
- 26:40the same breath, you asked to be taken
- 26:42off him.
- 26:43Then you stood at his bed and told him
- 26:45he was number 17.
- 26:47>> I said it.
- 26:48Every word was true.
- 26:50>> That's the problem.
- 26:55One complaint from Mr. Prudy
- 26:57and it runs right next to this.
- 27:00The board picks a new chief medical
- 27:02officer next month.
- 27:05My name's on the list.
- 27:07I'm not having the mob nurse in the news
- 27:09that week.
- 27:14I've already called the nursing
- 27:15supervisor.
- 27:19You're off patient care until the review
- 27:20on Friday.
