- 6:29conversation
- 6:31first take some time to read the
- 6:33questions 9 to 12.
- 7:24our copier has been acting strangely
- 7:26today could you come and take a look at
- 7:28it for us okay but did you check to see
- 7:31if any paper is jammed inside yes i did
- 7:34but that's not the problem i think the
- 7:36problem may be more serious all right
- 7:39but i have to run across town this
- 7:41morning to fix a machine there so i
- 7:43don't think i can make it to your office
- 7:45until after lunch
- 8:08questions 13 to 16 refer to the
- 8:10following conversation
- 8:12first take some time to read the
- 8:14questions 13 to 16.
- 8:33foreign
- 9:02hi there i'm having trouble finding this
- 9:05certain book on medieval german nobility
- 9:08let me check on the computer
- 9:10it appears that we don't have it oh no
- 9:13it was really important for an essay i'm
- 9:15working on right now
- 9:17well we have a central computer system
- 9:19that is connected to the other
- 9:20university libraries in the state i can
- 9:23search them all to see where your book
- 9:25is then order it from the nearest
- 9:27university
- 9:28you could borrow it from another library
- 9:31that would be great how long will it
- 9:33take we can usually get a book here in
- 9:35two or three days but the lending period
- 9:37is shorter than for a normal book only
- 9:40ten days instead of two weeks and if
- 9:42you're late returning books from other
- 9:43libraries the overdue fine is a lot
- 9:45larger i won't be late but does it cost
- 9:48anything to sign out books from other
- 9:50libraries not for up to five books any
- 9:53more than that and you would have to pay
- 9:55a small service charge
- 10:17questions 17 to 20 refer to the
- 10:19following conversation
- 10:21first take some time to read the
- 10:23questions 17 to 20.
- 11:09uh
- 11:15what's the matter jane oh i was supposed
- 11:17to meet james for a study session at 4
- 11:20but he's late james is like that i
- 11:22always give myself an extra 15 minutes
- 11:25or so whenever i have an appointment
- 11:27with him that's not a bad idea i'd like
- 11:29to have him waiting for me for a change
- 11:32yeah some people are just irresponsible
- 11:34like that i remember once he was
- 11:36actually late for the exam nearly 20
- 11:38minutes late and he just comes walking
- 11:40in like there's nothing wrong he wasn't
- 11:42worried or anything i can't imagine
- 11:44myself being like that i always leave
- 11:47myself extra time just to make sure i'm
- 11:49always ready and on time oh there he
- 11:52comes now it's about time
- 11:54how long are you guys planning on
- 11:55studying pretty late we have a big
- 11:57chemistry test tomorrow and i'm really
- 11:59behind well maybe i'll see you later i
- 12:02have to get some work done at the
- 12:03library too
- 12:28that is the end of part 2.
- 13:02part 3
- 13:03questions 21 to 35 in this part you will
- 13:07hear three talks lectures or
- 13:09conversations
- 13:11the talks lectures or conversations will
- 13:14not be repeated
- 13:15there are five questions for each talk
- 13:18lecture or conversation for each
- 13:20question choose the right answer a b
- 13:24c or d
- 13:28questions 21 to 25 refer to the
- 13:30following professors lecture
- 13:32first take some time to read the
- 13:35questions 21-25
- 15:06can you believe professor kensington
- 15:08postponed the due date for the term
- 15:10paper this morning it's unbelievable
- 15:13yeah it was crazy i've been spending
- 15:16days and nights in the computer lab
- 15:18writing up that paper i only did that
- 15:21because he kept on emphasizing that he
- 15:24won't take any paper that's not in his
- 15:26office by noon today i heard that too
- 15:29jessica and i stayed up half the night
- 15:32trying to finish it i think it was three
- 15:34o'clock in the morning when we finally
- 15:36had the third draft i barely had any
- 15:39sleep
- 15:40you had jessica to help you
- 15:42at least you had someone to proofread
- 15:44your paper and help you with the
- 15:46research it was a nightmare for me
- 15:49i didn't even have time to proofread my
- 15:51paper well i'm really upset that
- 15:53professor kensington was so
- 15:55inconsiderate don't you agree
- 15:58i guess it was a hasty change but
- 16:01i think he did it for us students you
- 16:03really didn't get enough sleep did you
- 16:06you're not thinking straight i can't
- 16:08possibly see how i can understand his
- 16:10hasty decision that way
- 16:12well as much as i'm unhappy with his
- 16:15last minute decision
- 16:17i think he did it so that we could have
- 16:20one more chance to look over our work
- 16:22before turning it in
- 16:24besides an extension of two days isn't
- 16:27going to change anything drastic in our
- 16:29papers i suppose
- 16:31still i would have had more time to
- 16:33study for the calculus exam which was
- 16:36today if i hadn't had to spend so much
- 16:38time and energy on that paper
- 16:40oh well at least he didn't tell us to
- 16:43hand it in earlier that's right anyway
- 16:46i'm not going to spend another two days
- 16:48on the assignment i'm handing it in
- 16:50after the next class
- 17:00questions 26 to 30 refer to the
- 17:03following conversation
- 17:05first take some time to read the
- 17:07questions 26 to 30.
- 18:02so
- 18:39professor atkins could i get some help
- 18:41with my chemistry lab
- 18:44certainly julie what's the problem are
- 18:46you having trouble understanding some of
- 18:48the experiments
- 18:50oh no i understand the experiment
- 18:53perhaps i only think that i understand
- 18:55it what do you mean
- 18:57do you or don't you
- 18:59well i tried the latest experiment by
- 19:02myself based on what i understood from
- 19:04your lectures in lab session
- 19:06but i seem to come up with really
- 19:08different results from what the textbook
- 19:10indicates i should be getting
- 19:12that certainly is a possibility remember
- 19:15the textbook tends to give you an ideal
- 19:17explanation of the experiments
- 19:20but in real life any number of factors
- 19:23can cause you to get results that might
- 19:25not be the ideal or preferred outcome
- 19:29oh that's good
- 19:30so any result is acceptable
- 19:33no of course there is a range for this
- 19:36particular experiment i'd expect your
- 19:39answer to be within
- 19:41let's see now perhaps four or five
- 19:44percent of the textbook
- 19:46really my answer was nearly 10 percent
- 19:49off
- 19:50wouldn't that be all right
- 19:52i'm sorry but that would be a problem
- 19:55if your answer were that far from the
- 19:57proper answer and say that even if you
- 20:00could explain the difference
- 20:02i would have to lower your grade
- 20:04significantly
- 20:06i see all right
- 20:08i guess i'm going to have to redo it
- 20:10i want to do well in your class and
- 20:12can't afford to get a bad grade
- 20:15very good but you'll have to hurry the
- 20:17lab is due friday and i won't be giving
- 20:20any extensions
- 20:22oh
- 20:22i was hoping
- 20:24yes
- 20:25oh it's nothing
- 20:27well could you please sign a permission
- 20:29slip for me to use the lab after hours i
- 20:32only have time during late evenings this
- 20:34weekend
- 20:35sure i'll do that for you right now
- 20:38here you go
- 20:40and a tip
- 20:41before you start the experiment wipe the
- 20:44test tubes with alcohol
- 20:46there might be unwanted residue inside
- 20:49that might be affecting the result
- 20:58questions 31-35 refer to the following
- 21:01professors lecture
- 21:03first take some time to read the
- 21:05questions 31-35
- 23:04we'll be looking into the largest state
- 23:06in america alaska
- 23:09if you look at the location of alaska on
- 23:11the map you can see that it is bordered
- 23:13by canada on the east the arctic ocean
- 23:16on the north
- 23:17the bering strait and bering sea to the
- 23:20east and the gulf of alaska wait a
- 23:23minute
- 23:24sorry about that
- 23:25to the west and the gulf of alaska to
- 23:28the south
- 23:29and as you can see on the map alaska has
- 23:32a greater land area than california and
- 23:35texas combined
- 23:37now although there are many cities in
- 23:39alaska the population is so low that an
- 23:42average number of students in a middle
- 23:45school classroom is only about 10.
- 23:48you can imagine many desolate small
- 23:50towns scattered around alaska
- 23:52it's probably because roads and railways
- 23:55serve only certain portions of the state
- 23:58so it's natural that alaskans rely
- 24:00heavily on airplanes for transportation
- 24:03since many parts of alaska are
- 24:05accessible only via air
- 24:08well of course there is a railway
- 24:11operating between fairbanks a relatively
- 24:13big city in central alaska and seward a
- 24:17city on the southern coast
- 24:19it is much more popular than the only
- 24:22major highway in alaska the alaska
- 24:25highway which is open throughout the
- 24:27year
- 24:28not that there's much traffic
- 24:30one does not need to venture far to
- 24:32understand the reason for its sparse
- 24:35population
- 24:36even though cold climate and other
- 24:38factors make most of alaska a less than
- 24:41desirable location for farming
- 24:44agriculture is conducted in a few areas
- 24:46between fairbanks and the southern coast
- 24:49most of the food alaskans need however
- 24:52must be imported from outside the state
- 24:55also alaska is subject to strong
- 24:57earthquakes and occasional volcanic
- 24:59activity
- 25:01your textbook describes the explosion of
- 25:03the alaskan volcano mount katmai in the
- 25:06early 20th century as one of the most
- 25:10famous and violent volcanic eruptions in
- 25:12history
- 25:14i strongly suggest you read up on that
- 25:16chapter
- 25:17as we'll be touching on some of that the
- 25:19next time
- 25:20anyway where was i
- 25:22oh yes earthquakes
- 25:24these occasional earthquakes generate
- 25:27seismic sea waves called tsunamis as you
- 25:30may have heard these waves can reach far
- 25:32inland and destroy communities along the
- 25:35shore
- 25:36it wasn't much different from the
- 25:38terrible tsunami of 2004
- 25:46this is the end of the listening paper
- 25:49now you have 5 minutes to transfer your
- 25:52answers to your answer sheet
- 27:05you
