0:35good and therefore his game was not good
0:37and if he's going to face this team that
0:41doesn't Chase very much he got to get

1:28trade for ju Soo really the one guy that
1:31it felt like could unlock that roster
1:33and it's the least surprising thing ever
1:35that he's been a perfect fit in New York
1:37and that he's once again own the

1:46has to do he's not going to throw him a
1:48ton of fast balls but he's got to have
1:49his slider in in the zone and curveball

2:19guy that embodies that approach that
2:20they've become as a lineup is such a
2:23stubborn
2:25hitter and he's got a four- pitch walk
2:27first base runner for the Yankees is one
2:29stto well early on okay this is just
2:32early on it looks like it's a hitter's
2:35strike zone so what I mean by that the
2:37Strike Zone's going to be called tight
2:40that means the stuff that you have as a
2:42pitcher is going to have to be Electric
2:44in the strike zone to get outs otherwise
2:46it's going to be tough going for the
2:48pitchers tonight all right John here he
2:49is Aaron judge Larger than Life playing
2:52in his first World
2:54Series and a pinpoint fball for strike
2:57one and that's where you got to put it I
2:59mean such a big hitter 6'8 he has a hard
3:03time if you establish fast balls away
3:05then you can get him to chase at

3:14that curve and that's the key because

3:33they've not gotten much from their

4:52hitter's comfortable with that kind of
4:53power he's looking for a mistake and
4:56then he does not miss
4:58it four home runs and five games in the
5:01championship series the ALCS
5:05MVP the head of Jack flarey two balls

9:34hoping that it close to a full week off
9:36is going to load that tank up enough for
9:37him to be more himself yeah and the one
9:40thing that people have to understand
9:41what he's battling through you need your
9:43legs your feet you hit from the ground
9:45up he's still good enough to hit with
9:47his upper body but he loses the power
9:49and the bat speed on the pitches
9:53inside and he's in an 02
9:55hole it's been a simple game plan so far
9:58for Garrick Cole he's throwing his fast
10:00ball seeing what happens and two outs
10:03and 02 on the third
10:05hitter so six pitches in comes back home
10:09with an 02 to Freeman it is a fastball
10:13upstairs you will see his velocity go up
10:16when he's in a jam but I think until

12:39far he really has and you go to work and
12:41that time off you look at film and you
12:43try to get your mechanics back on playe
12:45and that that has showed up in his fast

12:52ball it's crazy but it's happened a few

13:18start and there's nowhere to hide
13:20nowhere to go and just got to make
13:22necessary adjustments he's done it
13:25trying to bounce back from those eight
13:26runs in three innings in game five
13:28against the Mets home with another one
13:30to to Rizzo popped out of his hand it's
13:32been drastic one way or the other he got
13:34blown up in that game five but in game
13:36one seven scoreless Innings and that
13:39fast ball you're talking about that was
13:40his best pitch that day it's so
13:42important that he gets Innings
13:45tonight Rizzo Ricochet it off him
13:48flarity runs it down but has no play and
13:50Anthony Rizzo's got an infield
13:55hit luckily that got him on all of the

14:19all the injuries that's a way better
14:21than two three Innings and they're
14:24hoping for four or five tonight cuz what
14:26it does is it sets the series in motion
14:29for how Dave Roberts is going to use his
14:31electric pen Anthony vulpi here with a
14:34runner at first nobody out 23-year-old
14:36Short Stop has been at his best so far
14:38in his first October on base all nine
14:42games this postseason we saw earlier
14:44this year John he had flattened his
14:45swing got a little bit too uppercut as a
14:47rookie last year it looked awesome but
14:49it came and went well it's back it is
14:51back and good timing for uh him and the
14:53Yankees it's no different than a pitcher
14:55we talk about the front side staying in
14:57as a pitcher the front side side of a
14:59hitter and not opening too soon is huge
15:01and when you get in that bad habit you
15:04then can't reach anything outside you
15:06can't go the other way you swing and
15:08Miss on breaking balls so keeping that
15:10front shoulder in staying on the ball is
15:13the term that'll serve him

25:24some point on the outside part of the
25:25plate
25:29two and two and there's the perfect
25:31example slow and then
25:39slower Jack flarey threw that curveball
25:41more than he has any other start in his
25:43career game five against the
25:48Mets Torres at first a leadoff single
25:51two balls and two strikes on SoDo
25:58he throws and Soo takes ball three and
26:00there's the SoDo Shuffle some of the
26:03best theater in baseball as well
26:05watching this guy you can't help but
26:07watch him and smile I'm sure it' be
26:09different if you were a pitcher facing
26:10him but I just love watching this
26:15guy you talk about fearlessness
26:19conviction intensity in that batters box
26:21it's rubbed off on this whole team he
26:23he's so good though with two strikes he
26:25spreads out he doesn't use his legs he
26:27trusts his hands and he could still hit
26:28for power with two
26:30strikes boxes this one towards the
26:32middle Edmond to the bag running thr for
26:35a double
26:41play but Tommy Edmond has uh been busy
26:44so far in this
26:46game well they've had him placed
26:48perfectly behind the bag both balls that
26:50were hit up the
26:53middle got a Dodger player there to take
26:57care of it Dodgers have been been the
26:58most effective shifting team in baseball
27:00in recent years and the data wins them
27:02one right there so they get the bases
27:04empty ahead of Judge who swings and
27:06misses at a first pitch fast

27:25you're used to seeing from Judge

27:38season and know that you're the going to
27:41win every matchup right now the pitchers
27:43have had an advantage over

29:07there um I think the spin's good I think
29:09the fast Ball's playing up so right now
29:11I feel good about where he's at even the
29:13pitch counts right where it needs to be
29:14Freddy Freeman what was your reaction
29:16seeing him leg out that triple yeah you
29:19know I I'll take 90 ft every time I can
29:21get it but I would have sort of sort of
29:23been content with the standup double but
29:25he's a baseball player he uh leged out
29:28extra 90 ft and the swing looked good
29:29too Dave how much fun are you having
29:31right now knowing it's stressful but how
29:33much fun I'm having a blast Kenny I'm

29:46same way this these iconic franchises

29:50so long it was a formality that they

30:26are bust and that feeling is as wrong as
30:28ever for both these teams you got the
30:30drought the Yankees have gone through
30:31they got their stars in their Prime you
30:33have one year of sto guaranteed you
30:35don't know beyond this year Tommy Edmond
30:38takes a strike Dodgers the recent
30:40postseason disappointments you bring in
30:42Otani and so you've got those World
30:45Series robust expectations in this
30:47head-to-head Collision these teams
30:48having broken through to get here but
30:50now four wins away from a
30:53parade the ball on a strike on Edmond
30:56and in a game where the young player has
30:58had such an impact and been so great
31:00these are the two oldest rosters
31:02basically the two oldest rosters in the
31:04league and a lot of veterans a lot of
31:06guys who have been through the
31:09[Music]

32:02watched major league game ever in Japan
32:04and you figured those numbers are going
32:06to get shredded in this fall classic
32:08yeah yeah well first pitch fast ball
32:11that he almost hit out of the ballpark
32:12let's see what gar Cole tries to slow
32:14him down on the first pitch or if he
32:15goes right back up there he elevates a
32:18lot of fast balls against
32:22shohi thre a cutter so good choice of
32:26pitches looks like a fast ball
32:28is able to not Square it up and follow
32:31it off for sh Otani there's no one real
32:34great way to get him out but what you
32:36have to do and what the really what the
32:38Padres did is slow slow away slow away
32:41then up and in trying to get his eyes in
32:44two different
32:46places and there's the change up for
32:48slow because he's so good at handling
32:51the fast ball in the zone and can go to
32:52all fields for power you have to get him
32:56to see velocity at some some point but
32:58then that velocity becomes harder after
33:01seeing a change
33:02up takes that cutter upstairs he's ahead
33:05two and
33:06one after the Padre's really pitched him
33:09tough he set a postseason record against
33:11the mats reach base 17 times including a
33:14couple home runs in that
33:17series no score bottom three base is
33:19empty two away and a 2-1 pitch to sh
33:22Otani oh boy had one right there

33:29we were choking when we came out of the
33:31postseason we were like I wonder if
33:33shohi is going to be nervous never being
33:36in the postseason well he answered that
33:37question an astounding

33:45playoffs they they asked him are you
33:47nervous and before The Interpreter could
33:50interpret he said

34:35fourth well he really is doing a good
34:37job mixing and matching his pitches

34:40about for strikes and mixing in that

34:51is up on the breaking ball how do you
34:53see the approach of your hitters against
34:54it yeah yeah all right I do feel like
34:56he's spinning the ball pretty well well
34:57osus and I were talking about that like
34:59he's got a pretty good breaking ball and
35:00a little more power than obviously we
35:02saw out of him in his last start so uh
35:05looks like he's in command so far your
35:06starting pitcher Garrett Cole six of the
35:09outs on elevated heaters what stands out
35:11to you about his stuff I like I like
35:13he's under control he's established his
35:15fast ball and now starting to mix in
35:17some of his secondary stuff that's uh
35:19looked good to me too he seems to be in
35:21control Aaron thanks so much that couple
35:23quick outs in this fourth inning for his
35:25counterpart and Jack flare
35:28Anthony Rizo yeah now Anthony Rizzo's
35:29got one of the two Yankees hits I mean
35:32this is heady stuff for both these guys
35:34we talked about it off of the top you
35:36got Cole pitching for the team that he
35:37grew up dreaming of pitching for Jack
35:40Flare's first time at Dodgers Stadium
35:42came before he was old enough to even
35:43realize that when his mom brought him in
35:45a onesie when he was 6 months old he
35:48come to more than 100 games here as a
35:49kid I go to like 20 games a summer when
35:52he was in high school he pitched a
35:54shutout and drove in the only run in a
35:56sectional championship one- nothing win
35:59and now he's on the mound for the
36:00Dodgers in the world series I mean that
36:02is pinch me stuff for both these
36:04starting pitchers on top of managing all
36:06the emotions you're already going to
36:08have on this stage yeah well they met
36:10the made the trade to get him over here
36:11to help that staff that was bruised
36:14up and already delivering in a World
36:18Series start after we talked about
36:21having a clunker and that's the sign of
36:23a pitcher making necessary adjustments
36:26on the next start if you're given that
36:28one let's go over two on to Rizzo and
36:31gets a Chase two and
36:32[Applause]

36:53two I mean he didn't strike out a single
36:55guy in his last start he only had two
36:57swings and
36:59[Applause]
37:04misses Rizzo pokes his one the left
37:06field teoscar Hernandez is there and
37:08Jack fl's got the good stuff back

37:13tonight and leading off this fourth
37:15inning in a scoreless
37:18game strike one from Garrett Cole yeah
37:21good luck making the pick between the
37:23two yeah I mean I don't think he could
37:26go wrong but they complimented each
37:27other one right-handed one
37:31left-handed mooki bats fouls this one
37:34off and it's 0 and two six years in
37:36Boston hard to believe that he's now
37:38been in La for almost that same amount
37:39of time this his fifth year here with
37:41the Dodgers was one a World Series in
37:43his first year in
37:452020 and I think because of the
37:48attention Otani gets it now feels like
37:49mooki bets has become underrated
37:51underappreciated for the total package
37:54that he is
37:57and an 02 from Cole bets watches it
38:00break
38:01away great pitch and yeah you're so
38:03right because Muki in his previous team
38:06played one of the hardest right fields
38:08in all of baseball right I mean Fenway
38:11Park has got that huge and he's such an
38:13elite

38:16Defender the the amazing part is he went
38:19to Short Stop yeah he was playing Short
38:21Stop most of the year he can do it all
38:22he's gone to second he has such an
38:24ability to affect the game both on at
38:27the plate and on the
38:30field from o and two to two and two
38:32always disciplined
38:34bets Cole fires and Bets pokes it down
38:38the right field line on comes stto still
38:40coming and Rizzo over the shoulder makes
38:43the grab lost the hat to get a little
38:46better view right there and uh pump of
38:49the Fist fired up that he was able to
38:51pull that one in this is such a hard
38:53play Big first baseman running out there
38:56back to towards the catcher never the
39:00pitcher rarely is happy when your first
39:02baseman is running like that to catch a
39:06ball but he is appreciative you got to
39:09get those kind of outs you can't let
39:11soft fly balls fall
39:14in now both these veteran first Bas been
39:16making impacts in this game although
39:18hobble Freddy Freeman on the bad ankle
39:20had a triple in the first inning one of
39:23the best hitters of this generation
39:24model of consistency 300 hitter for his
39:28career and a model of dependability too
39:31he misses games you know the injury
39:33serious he had missed two games total
39:36his first two years in
39:38La well the one thing about sports we'll
39:40never know about everybody cuz no one's
39:42going to tell you what they feeling like
39:44and explain and make it sound like an
39:46excuse but when your teammates know that
39:47a player is going through what he's
39:49going through not only do you gain
39:51respect you have no more
39:54excuses breaks his b and and bagos
39:58flying out there by Rizzo ball dbas
40:01along
40:03first destroyed this thing yeah right
40:06off the end that's what happens when it
40:08hits off the
40:11end almost cut in half delayed that bad
40:15boy Freeman's been going through like a
40:174-Hour pregame routine with physical
40:20therapist Bernard Lee just to get the
40:21swelling out of that ankle just to get
40:23the pain down to the point where it's
40:25bearable and at first it was just
40:27running that was bothering him but it
40:28started to bleed into his swing as
40:32well another
40:3402 another broken bat this time it's a
40:37fair ball and Rizzo takes it to the bag
40:39Freddy Freeman will go months at a time
40:41without breaking a bat cole breaks two
40:43backto back pitches cuz the barrel of
40:45the bats coming out towards him so he
40:47couldn't cover first base but you talk
40:50about satisfaction to takeing the bat
40:51out of someone's hand like Freddy that
40:53is
40:55satisfaction G Cole's just giving up one
40:57base runner three and 2/3 he struck out
41:01three not walked
41:02anybody Bas is empty two out here taser
41:05Hernandez lined out his first
41:07time well Al also what he's doing is
41:10he's commanding the first pitch strikes
41:1210 out of 13 first pitch strikes you've
41:15got to set the tone as a pitcher against
41:17a great lineup we talked about it in the
41:18beginning both pitchers have done that
41:21both hitters both offenses look like
41:24they're at the mercy of the pitcher
41:26right now
41:3012 seasons in the bid leagues for Garett
41:33Cole Pirates to the Asos and then to the
41:36Yankees on that record deal Five Seasons
41:39with the Yankees as good as advertised
41:41second in wins fourth in strikeouts w a
41:44sa young last
41:45year and Out Try to pitch him to a world
41:48title two balls and two strikes on
41:50Hernandez and you know both teams had
41:51the first round by right that's been an
41:53issue that's rare that we get it's the
41:56first time since a new playoff format we
41:57get two of the best records in the World
41:59Series but they both had layoffs after
42:01their wins again so maybe navigating
42:04that helped each
42:05team deal with the offense that really
42:08is sitting at Bay without live
42:11action here's a
42:132-2 Hernandez lays off cuz these are two
42:15lineups coming in clicking on all
42:17cylinders that these pitchers are
42:18slowing down yeah you can never predict
42:20how you're going to win but if you knew
42:23how you were going to win you'd like the
42:24series to go long and not have as many
42:26days off and just keep
42:29clicking Hernandez 33 home runs during
42:32the regular season included a couple
42:34against the Yankees back in
42:36June pops this one in the shadow of
42:38center field actually won't even make it
42:40that far both it short will end the
42:43fourth bottom of the Yankees order Jack
42:46flare strike one to Anthony
42:49vulpi Flare's in his eighth season in
42:51the big leagues debuted when he was 21
42:53with the St Louis Cardinals he had a few
42:55years there he was one of the most
42:56dominant Young pitchers in
42:59baseball the Rookie of the Year votes he
43:02was top five in sa young voting his
43:04second year but then years of dealing
43:05with injuries and that had a low point
43:08last year he had a five erra Cardinal
43:10shipped him off to the Orioles barely
43:12factored in for the Orioles down the
43:15stretch Strikes Out Anthony vulpia on
43:17three pitches and that is a testament
43:19John to how different he is right now
43:21cuz vulpi has not been able to be
43:22retired like that this postseason

44:05get into a spot that he didn't have to
44:06have too many tough decisions in during
44:08the championship series look he managed
44:10that beautifully but a lot of times the
44:12game was lopsided one way or the other
44:15and it was totally clear which way to go
44:17now here you're going to have the top of
44:19the Yankees order coming up very soon

44:25looking good but Dave s always
44:27aggressive with that
44:32Bullpen both starters in game one up to
44:35the challenge up to the honor game one

45:04signed a one-year contract with the

45:39get length out of your starters well

49:05to was as a fan in the World Series in
49:072001 in Arizona he's sitting there as a

49:22pitchers are in a Zone like this it's
49:24fun to pitch cuz you're not waiting in
49:26between too long but you know what the
49:28downside is you're not getting any runs
49:30either to work with SO pitching in a
49:33game locked up 0 in the perfect world
49:36you'd love to get through six and then
49:37your team gets that bonus run and a jolt
49:39of energy goes through your body he
49:41looks so calm too like he's hardly
49:45sweating that's a good sign Dodges have
49:48not put much stress on him just the
49:50triple from Freeman back in the
49:52first Shu out Hernandez with a high fast
49:55ball the first time High fast balls
49:57punch towards the right field Corner
49:59sorta on the Move won't get there extra
50:02bases for KiKi Hernandez headed for
50:04third with a second Dodger triple to
50:06this ball
50:13game well he might have gone up there
50:15with an idea to hit a high fast ball
50:17because that's exactly what he did and
50:19he didn't try to pull it now if stto
50:22maybe could do this over again he would
50:24have played this for a double but
50:26there's the high fast ball away he goes
50:28with it perfect head down Barrel to the
50:31bat but then once this ball gets by stto
50:34he can't slow down and he can't get back
50:37to the ball in time to prevent it from
50:39being a triple so now the infield comes
50:41in behind Garrett Cole runner at third
50:43one away Will Smith at the

50:48pl Will Smith has more sacrific flies
50:51than any player in baseball The Last 5
50:55Years how you pitching him in this
50:57situation well they got the first pitch
50:59by him and that was the one that you you
51:01got to establish and then you got to
51:03start breaking the pitches away if you
51:05don't go in with a fast ball because
51:07Will Smith's looking for something up to
51:10[Applause]
51:15lift and that's the perfect pitch the
51:18fact that he didn't swing at it you can
51:20be frustrated if you're cold but you
51:21just know that that's the pressure you
51:23put on a hitter that looks like a fast
51:25ball and it just was such a good pitch
51:27it freezes

51:43and the Dodgers have broken through in

51:54fifth Will Smith so reliable Through The
51:57Years gets the job done scoring Kea
52:00Hernandez Dodgers have the game's first
52:02run well a good pitch and a great piece
52:05of hitting he may not have a lot of hits
52:08in the postseason he's got walks and you
52:10talk about his timely sack flies putting
52:13the ball in play that's what these teams
52:15do so
52:18well and that's the part of it that we
52:21haven't touched on as much yeah there's
52:23the power and there's the walks but they
52:25marry that with the ability to put put
52:26the ball in play lock with away takes
52:29the ball cuz a lot of times you see
52:30teams that are going to sell out for
52:32that power they'll take their walks but
52:33it comes with a strikeouts you don't win
52:35championships if the strikeouts are part
52:37of the equation no you don't you don't
52:39at all Anthony Rizzo over there for what
52:42looks like little pep talk which he's
52:44been known to deliver through the years
52:46Anthony Rizzo's got a World Series ring
52:49and famous for his motivational talks
52:51during that World Series with the Cubs
52:53where they were on the brink of
52:54elimination and he put on the Rocky
52:56music in the clubhouse stripped down
52:58naked climbed on a table and gave this
53:00half motivational half comedy sketch
53:02routine they won that game did it again
53:04for game six and game seven and he was
53:06in gar Kier right there fully clothed
53:09though 1 to Gavin

53:16strike well these teams are so evenly
53:19matched I look for so many different
53:21disparaging uh statistics and you can't
53:24find them they're they're one and two
53:25one and three top five and when they
53:27score first they're two of the best
53:29teams in baseball the Dodgers this
53:31postseason 5- one when they score first
53:34so getting that point on the board very
53:36important to both

53:43teams and then so many similar
53:46characters too you you got the two
53:47biggest stars and we've touched on the
53:49parallels of SoDo and Bets his veteran
53:52first baseman fighting through injuries
53:54the struggling offensive catchers
53:57even the managers former postseason
53:59Heroes now shouldering the pressure of
54:01leading these great
54:03franchises both managing spectacularly
54:06to get their teams

54:11here the one two to Gavin L lifted to
54:15center field for
54:19judge and Flare's left out there to face
54:22the heart of the lineup strike
54:23one-on-one stto Flare's done an
54:25unbelievable job with that pitch right
54:27there fast ball strikes are way up 21
54:30out of 30 it sets up his breaking ball
54:33it's why he's given up no runs against
54:34the

54:39Yankees you know this is the first time
54:41that we've been covering following
54:43obviously the Dodgers where Dave Roberts
54:45is really going to be given some tough
54:47decisions it's one- nothing and you
54:48think well what tough decision could it
54:50be to leave flarity in the game when
54:52he's
54:53rolling well he's got a bullpen that's
54:56out standing and what Dave has shown
54:58he's not afraid to go to his leverage
54:59arms at any time he sees a crack or a
55:03moment to let the bullpen do the rest
55:05we've got a run of four left-handers out
55:07of five hitters at the bottom of the
55:09order that's what Anthony Bond would be
55:10for two and two on one SoDo this is the
55:14one guy that he crosses his fingers that
55:15he can get through cuz then he've got
55:17righty righty against judge and Stanton
55:19well right now he is on point and not
55:21shown anything worthy of taking him out
55:24of the game
55:27SoDo with a base hit to center field
55:29they open the six on a two- strike pitch
55:32Waits on it to land and bangs it through
55:34the middle the lead off this inning the
55:36reason the followup I say these are
55:38tough decisions because when Dave
55:40Roberts goes to his Bullpen and his
55:42assets you got to win that game if
55:44you're the Dodgers because if you use
55:46all those assets and lose as you see one
55:48of the greatest hitters in the game with
55:49two strikes you know those guys are
55:52going to have to pitch a bullpen game
55:53that's why it's tough It's not in a
55:55regular season game you would never even
55:57consider taking Jack flare out of this
55:59game judge at the plate ball one so lead
56:03off single from SoDo and judge hitting
56:06with a man at first he struck out both
56:07times in this game and in 15 of his 33
56:10at bats in this
56:13[Applause]
56:16postseason two
56:21and0 got a chance to talk with Reggie
56:24Jackson today and he's synonymous for
56:26one of the greatest postseason hitters
56:27of all time and he talked about his will

1:15:01that but he looks like he's in a rocking
1:15:03chair out there pitching in the World
1:15:05Series well he pitches like he's in a
1:15:07rocking chair and if he drops this ball
1:15:09right here you're not going to get too
1:15:11many Praises coming from your manager so
1:15:13good thing he caught it ni and threw it
1:15:16the first with no issues missed a lot of
1:15:18this season with a shoulder issue he
1:15:19comes back and in his first game injures
1:15:21his hamstring they said that his year
1:15:23was done he makes his crazy recover from
1:15:25that but then gets Hur again this is
1:15:27first game since September
1:15:2924th and it's not just in the World
1:15:32Series but it's to as stto and judge at
1:15:34the top of the Yankees order ultimate

1:20:23point is 02 to Hernandez the breaking
1:20:27pitch taken for a
1:20:28ball that's we seeing a little bit of
1:20:31everything here at B this postseason as
1:20:33you see Klay Holmes getting ready couple

1:20:37clinching game of the division series he

2:16:34Dad uh yeah he's been there since I was
2:16:38a little boy throwing batting practice
2:16:40to me every day so this isn't my moment
2:16:43that's my dad's moment it's been such a
2:16:45tough year for you physically off the
2:16:47field with your son Freddy how
2:16:49gratifying is it just to get this done
2:16:51for your team yeah pretty gratifying um
