- 23:28now
- 23:29moving
- 23:31well
- 23:32it's food for thought
- 23:36speaker 2.
- 23:39there was a time around here that you
- 23:42could leave your front door open morning
- 23:44noon and night
- 23:46kids just played in the street
- 23:48unsupervised and only came home when it
- 23:50got dark or their dinner was on the
- 23:52table
- 23:54everybody knew everybody else and their
- 23:57business so it wasn't all great
- 24:00ah but over the last few years it's got
- 24:03worse and worse and i've no idea why i
- 24:06really don't
- 24:08mrs peters at number 36 she was mugged
- 24:12just last thursday
- 24:1350 pounds and her mobile phone she lost
- 24:18speaker three
- 24:21when we saw it we just fell in love with
- 24:23it
- 24:24the old wooden floors the heavy oak
- 24:26doors the delightful bay windows and the
- 24:29garden the gardens going to be glorious
- 24:31in spring
- 24:32we'll have picnics maybe even barbecues
- 24:36of course there's lots of work to be
- 24:37done before it's perfect if it ever will
- 24:40be
- 24:40but we seem to be settling in
- 24:43most of the local shopkeepers seem to
- 24:44know our names now and most people say
- 24:47hello in the street
- 24:48it's such a change from living in the
- 24:50city
- 24:51and when the kids go back to school
- 24:53there's a really good one at the other
- 24:55end of the village i'll probably have to
- 24:57walk them there though the high street
- 24:59is very busy with cars and i don't want
- 25:01to risk them crossing a busy road on
- 25:03their own
- 25:06speaker 4
- 25:10well with the kids now there's just not
- 25:12enough room for all of us we had to do
- 25:15it really
- 25:16obviously i would have liked to have
- 25:18stayed here but it's for the best it was
- 25:21just impractical really
- 25:23and now we'll have a lovely place
- 25:25i've lived here since i left home i
- 25:28never imagined then how much my life
- 25:30would change
- 25:32look out of the window
- 25:34see that shop that's where i bought my
- 25:36first suit for my first day of work
- 25:39and there's the cafe where i met karen
- 25:41my wife
- 25:43the idea of moving was hard at first
- 25:46leaving all these memories behind
- 25:48still
- 25:49it's for the best and it's not like
- 25:51we're moving to the other side of the
- 25:53world
- 25:54it's only a 10-minute drive and i can
- 25:56pop back whenever i like
- 26:01speaker 5
- 26:04i realize now it wasn't the right thing
- 26:06to do
- 26:07we jumped in too quick we just took one
- 26:10look at the cottage and the village and
- 26:12we fell in love
- 26:13we didn't really think about the
- 26:15practicalities
- 26:16it all seemed so idyllic really country
- 26:20houses with beautiful gardens cricket on
- 26:22the village green the village fate the
- 26:25duck pond it seemed like we were going
- 26:28back in time
- 26:29but once you're used to all that spent a
- 26:32year or so here well that's when the
- 26:35realities kick in
- 26:37there's not really much to do
- 26:39if we want to go to the cinema it's a
- 26:42half hour drive to the multiplex on the
- 26:44ring road
- 26:45if we want to eat in a good restaurant
- 26:47or see an exhibition we have to go into
- 26:50town
- 26:51which with traffic can take over an hour
- 26:53and a half
- 26:55and while the kids don't mind it now i
- 26:58dread to think what they'll be like when
- 27:00they're a bit older
- 27:01there's literally nothing for teenagers
- 27:03to do here
- 27:06i guess we should have given it a bit
- 27:08more practical thought before we dived
- 27:10in and moved
- 27:14speaker one
- 27:17people tell me i should cash in on it
- 27:20sell up move out to the country
- 27:22prices have gone up so much around here
- 27:24that i could get a lovely place
- 27:26somewhere rural
- 27:28i don't know though it had never really
- 27:30occurred to me before
- 27:32i've lived half my life here and don't
- 27:34really see much reason for a change
- 27:37but
- 27:38while you might say the area has gone up
- 27:40market and improved with these new
- 27:42bistros and shops
- 27:44well it's lost something too
- 27:47a lot of the character it used to have
- 27:49i mean now i don't even know my
- 27:51neighbors names and they don't know mine
- 27:54so i'm not sure if i should stick around
- 27:56now
- 27:57moving
- 27:59well

- 31:36more practical thought before we dived
- 31:38in and moved
- 31:44that's the end of part three
- 31:46now turn to part four
- 31:51you will hear an interview with a travel
- 31:53writer called anna bryant who is talking
- 31:56about what to do when visiting other
- 31:57countries
- 31:59for questions 24 to 30
- 32:02choose the best answer
- 32:04a
- 32:05b
- 32:06or c
- 32:08you now have one minute to look at part
- 32:11four
- 33:15good morning anna and thank you for
- 33:17joining us on the travel program
- 33:19you're here to talk about traveling to
- 33:21other countries and how to deal with
- 33:23cultural differences
- 33:25how can you find out about a country's
- 33:27culture before you travel
- 33:30well it's often tempting to turn to
- 33:32guide books though many focus on things
- 33:35to do rather than how to behave if
- 33:38you're lucky enough to know someone from
- 33:39the country you're visiting i rarely
- 33:41have been you've got the perfect
- 33:44consultant
- 33:45my preference is to eat in a restaurant
- 33:47where the staff are from the place
- 33:49you're planning to visit
- 33:50you can observe things like greetings
- 33:52and table manners that isn't always
- 33:55possible either but it's worth a try
- 33:58how can you get over the language
- 34:00barrier it does no harm to try to use
- 34:02the local language especially if it's
- 34:04one you've studied at school
- 34:06even if you only remember a bit it helps
- 34:09though maybe not much
- 34:12often you might not know any of the
- 34:14language and you'll have to rely on hand
- 34:17gestures or even drawing i've been in
- 34:20situations where nobody understood a
- 34:22word anyone else was saying
- 34:24surprisingly the messages got across and
- 34:28now that's the least of my concerns when
- 34:30travelling though i tried to pick up as
- 34:33much language as i can
- 34:35one thing people worry about is how to
- 34:38behave when visiting someone in their
- 34:40home
- 34:41some people are concerned that telling
- 34:43their hosts they're nervous is rude
- 34:46personally i see little wrong with
- 34:48explaining why that's the case
- 34:50it provides the host with the
- 34:52opportunity to make you feel at home
- 34:55otherwise you could be trying to do what
- 34:57they're doing and get confused
- 35:00copying them means you could end up
- 35:02behaving like the host instead of the
- 35:04guest
- 35:05talking to other people before you go
- 35:07might help but every family has its own
- 35:10particular traditions so it may not
- 35:13have you ever made a cultural mistake
- 35:15yourself
- 35:17oh yes
- 35:18though thankfully i was fortunate enough
- 35:21to have an understanding host who put me
- 35:23at ease and because of that i'm able to
- 35:26laugh about it now
- 35:28i don't know why i made the mistake
- 35:30i took an unlucky number of flowers as a
- 35:32gift
- 35:33looking back it wasn't so serious really
- 35:36i just misunderstood what someone had
- 35:38told me before i went
- 35:40i'd never make the same mistake again
- 35:42though
- 35:43have you ever experienced culture shock
- 35:46when i've lived abroad yes
- 35:49at first
- 35:50everything's exciting but if you stay
- 35:52longer you notice differences in
- 35:55cultural values and beliefs and that can
- 35:57be confusing
- 35:59making good friends in a new place takes
- 36:01time and it's important to try to let
- 36:04things happen
- 36:05rather than desperately trying to do
- 36:07everything at once
- 36:09doing familiar things helps sleeping
- 36:11regular hours and eating food you like
- 36:14it really worked in helping me get used
- 36:16to my new environment
- 36:18what's the most interesting tradition
- 36:20you've experienced
- 36:22i remember being in china at new year
- 36:25and seeing the lantern festival
- 36:28there was this amazing parade of
- 36:30handmade lanterns
- 36:32seeing it taught me that no matter how
- 36:34much you think you know about something
- 36:36in advance it can still take you by
- 36:39surprise
- 36:40i was desperate to join in but didn't
- 36:43have my own lantern it was still
- 36:45enormous fun to watch
- 36:47the images of it are stuck in my memory
- 36:50i needn't worry about forgetting
- 36:52anything despite not taking any photos
- 36:55finally anna you're writing a book about
- 36:57culture that's right
- 37:00i'm still at the beginning of the
- 37:01process even though i've been working on
- 37:03it for a while
- 37:05people who know me keep asking isn't it
- 37:08finished yet but you've got to do the
- 37:11preparation
- 37:12i'm still undecided about whether people
- 37:14will want to read about my own travels
- 37:16or whether i should just focus on
- 37:18describing customs from around the world
- 37:21i won't show anyone what i've written
- 37:22till it's finished i'm hopeful that
- 37:24people will enjoy it
- 37:29now listen again
- 37:32good morning anna and thank you for
