FSD Is BACK! 14.3.8 First Drive — Transcript

1. 0:00All right, I got it. I got the summer
2. 0:01update. I got 14.3.8
3. 0:04of full self-driving along with all the
4. 0:06other summer update features which I'll
5. 0:08cover in a separate video. This one This
6. 0:11one is about how does FSD actually
7. 0:13perform and we're going to put it
8. 0:15through our normal paces, through our
9. 0:16normal drive, and we're going to just
10. 0:18see how it does. With that, let's just
11. 0:20go ahead and get started.
12. 0:24I'm really hopeful that we see some
13. 0:27improvements in backing up and parking
14. 0:30because that's really been the pain
15. 0:31point here. And so far
16. 0:34fingers crossed, we'll time it on the
17. 0:35screen. We've been averaging around 29
18. 0:38seconds from when I hit the button and
19. 0:41start moving to when actually I start
20. 0:43moving forward and this might be kind of
21. 0:45in that ballpark, but it seems a little
22. 0:48more confident.
23. 0:50So, with that, we're just going to go
24. 0:52ahead and get started on this journey.
25. 0:55Now, with the summer update, we have a
26. 0:56few features that we can take advantage
27. 1:00of right away and the first one has to
28. 1:02do with the zoom on the screen. Yes, you
29. 1:06heard me right. We have a zoom.
30. 1:09Now, when you're driving, I can go ahead
31. 1:10and I can pinch and zoom out and zoom
32. 1:13in. And on the bottom left-hand corner
33. 1:15here, I've also got a slider here for
34. 1:171x, which is normal, or 2x.
35. 1:22We'll stick with 2x and it seems to
36. 1:24stick.
37. 1:25Um we have We're driving now in standard
38. 1:27mode.
39. 1:28Had a little bit of hesitation there
40. 1:30because there was a bird on the road.
41. 1:32I'm pretty sure that that's why it got
42. 1:34the little bit of a hesitation, but for
43. 1:35the most part everything is really good.
44. 1:38Speed is really good. We're approaching
45. 1:39a right-hand turn. Normally, traffic
46. 1:42goes crossways 55 mph. It is a Sunday
47. 1:46afternoon. I had to delay this drive a
48. 1:48little bit because it's been raining all
49. 1:51day. And yes, I'm pretty certain that
50. 1:53FSD D would have done great in the rain,
51. 1:56but I didn't want to throw off the
52. 1:59standard drive in case something weird
53. 2:01happened. I really wanted to wait till
54. 2:02the weather got a little bit better. And
55. 2:04for now,
56. 2:05the rain has stopped even though we're
57. 2:07we're overcast. So, here we go. We're
58. 2:09going. That was a nice right-hand turn.
59. 2:11We got over into the left lane real nice
60. 2:13and easy. So far, this drive has been
61. 2:17picture perfect. So, it sounds like the
62. 2:19summer update is finally rolling out to
63. 2:22the general masses, and I happen to be
64. 2:24one of those general mass people. And
65. 2:28I've gone through the features, and and
66. 2:30things are looking pretty cool, pretty
67. 2:31nice. Uh some of the things are a little
68. 2:33unexpected. Some of the things are kind
69. 2:35of meh.
70. 2:37But, uh there are a few things in there
71. 2:38that I I really like. And the first one
72. 2:40is the ability to talk to Grok and have
73. 2:43Grok do more for you than it used to be
74. 2:46able to do. Before, it was just
75. 2:47basically navigation
76. 2:50and answering questions. But, as far as
77. 2:53tying it to the car, that's pretty much
78. 2:55all you were able to do. Um from
79. 2:57experimentation side of things, it
80. 2:59appears that you can do a heck of a lot
81. 3:01more inside the cabin as far as like
82. 3:04opening the glove box or changing the
83. 3:06temperature or changing your seat
84. 3:08heaters or seat cooling.
85. 3:11And
86. 3:12which I'll turn off cuz it's starting to
87. 3:14get a little warm. Uh but, it won't
88. 3:16actually do anything that makes the car
89. 3:20move. The exception of one thing that I
90. 3:22found, you can't open the frunk, you
91. 3:23can't open the trunk. You can't have it
92. 3:26roll down the windows. You can't have it
93. 3:28lock the doors. Um but, it will fold
94. 3:31your mirrors. So,
95. 3:33other than that, it it you can do quite
96. 3:35a bit of things. And you can chain some
97. 3:37events together by telling Grok to do a
98. 3:39number of things in sequence by turning
99. 3:41on your windshield wipers to setting the
100. 3:43temperature all in one sentence, and it
101. 3:45will do all of those. Um even putting in
102. 3:48different modes like camp mode. Let's
103. 3:50say you're in the back camping and you
104. 3:52forgot to enable camp mode. Sure, you
105. 3:55can do it from your phone, but you can
106. 3:56just say, "Hey Grok, enable camp mode."
107. 3:59Overall, things are
108. 4:01are progressing in the right direction
109. 4:03because I think we're to the point
110. 4:05we're getting close to the point where I
111. 4:07can start telling Grok what to do while
112. 4:09we're actively driving. I want to be
113. 4:11able to say, "Hey Grok, take the
114. 4:14next right-hand turn instead of going
115. 4:17straight as planned." And then it would
116. 4:18take the next right-hand turn and then
117. 4:20recalculate. And then another feature is
118. 4:23this preferred routes, which I haven't
119. 4:26had a chance to use it much because I
120. 4:27think it's got to have some ability to
121. 4:29kind of figure out what you do, but the
122. 4:31preferred route is that if it if you go
123. 4:33to work or you go to your favorite
124. 4:35coffee shop and it you often take a
125. 4:37different route than what the navigation
126. 4:39thinks you should take, then it will
127. 4:42supposedly pick up on that and remember
128. 4:45that and then make that your default
129. 4:47setting the next time. That again, one
130. 4:48of those nods toward actually
131. 4:52doing the things that we want it to do
132. 4:54when we want to do it.
133. 4:56Nice solid four-way stop here.
134. 4:58No traffic for the most part. We're good
135. 5:01to go.
136. 5:02I've been doing a lot of rambling here,
137. 5:04and that's fine because we're we're
138. 5:07having this conversation and the car is
139. 5:09talking. Yes, I'm looking forward. I'm
140. 5:11looking for anything that's happening,
141. 5:13but I haven't had to realistically drive
142. 5:15this car um in any meaningful way in a
143. 5:19long time. And that that says a lot to
144. 5:21where we are with FSD. So far, speed has
145. 5:24been good. I haven't felt any
146. 5:26jitteriness. I haven't felt any
147. 5:30any issues whatsoever. I think we're
148. 5:32getting back to the point where I think
149. 5:3514.2
150. 5:37was really good. And then 14.3 came out
151. 5:40and I think we had some regression. Um
152. 5:42and so far, from a smoothness point of
153. 5:45view, I think this is, by far, the best
154. 5:48one.
155. 5:49So far, at least, in my situation, in my
156. 5:52town, with this traffic.
157. 5:54The weak point up to this point has been
158. 5:56parking.
159. 5:58Parking, parking, parking. And
160. 6:01we'll see if this does a better job.
161. 6:05We are going in the front way this time.
162. 6:07I didn't go ahead and see if I could
163. 6:09change it. I just let it do its thing
164. 6:11because this is technically the fastest
165. 6:13way in.
166. 6:17Make a right-hand turn here into the
167. 6:18parking lot
168. 6:20to our Pump & Pantry.
169. 6:22They got recently purchased, so we got a
170. 6:24new name. Same building that we always
171. 6:26used to go to
172. 6:27at least for a long time.
173. 6:31Signal. Looks like we're going to pull
174. 6:32in straight.
175. 6:35Look at that.
176. 6:37Nice. Beautiful.
177. 6:40Pull in. Nice to stop. Our wheel is
178. 6:43almost exactly straight. We're going to
179. 6:45stop here. We're going to get a
180. 6:46beverage, and we'll head on to my place
181. 6:48of work. Be back in a sec.
182. 6:50All right, we're back with the beverage.
183. 6:51Let's go ahead and get started. We'll
184. 6:53just tap the
185. 6:54start self-driving button here, which is
186. 6:57pretty much my only job anymore when
187. 6:59driving.
188. 7:00And it is choosing to go out the front.
189. 7:02It's been doing that more lately, and
190. 7:03this is good because this is the direct
191. 7:05route to go out. And forever in version
192. 7:0714.3, it would go out the backside,
193. 7:10which is the long way to go.
194. 7:12This time, we're going to go ahead and
195. 7:13pull up. It does stop right at the stop
196. 7:15sign, and then it's going to inch
197. 7:16forward.
198. 7:18But, uh, traffic is very light because
199. 7:20it's a Sunday afternoon.
200. 7:22And it should just go ahead and go here.
201. 7:25And it does.
202. 7:31Pulled into the nearest lane. Sometimes
203. 7:33it will pull into the far lane, I've
204. 7:35seen, with with hardware 4. I've yet to
205. 7:36see it hardware 3 do that. Now,
206. 7:39I've gotten comments before that that
207. 7:41crossing into the the far lane in a turn
208. 7:43is illegal. Might be.
209. 7:45Um but uh
210. 7:47it's what people do and it seems to be
211. 7:49what people expect and often time what
212. 7:51people expect
213. 7:53is probably the safest way to go about
214. 7:55doing it. So, I don't have a problem
215. 7:56with it at all.
216. 7:59All right, it's deciding to get over now
217. 8:01probably because of slower traffic here.
218. 8:04And we do have a little bit of
219. 8:05construction we have to deal with but uh
220. 8:08not so much on this particular route.
221. 8:11See if we get lucky with the traffic
222. 8:14lights here. So far this has been a
223. 8:16picture-perfect drive and if I had to
224. 8:20think about what would I have it do
225. 8:23better
226. 8:24uh as far as driving
227. 8:27that it isn't already doing
228. 8:30I I'm struggling. I'm struggling to come
229. 8:32up with something right now.
230. 8:34This thing is basically better
231. 8:37confidently better than 75% of the
232. 8:41drivers on the road at least where I
233. 8:43live.
234. 8:44And that says quite a bit. It may be
235. 8:46higher than that. It's 45 here but we
236. 8:49got some traffic that is slowing. We got
237. 8:51a
238. 8:52red right-hand turn up here so it isn't
239. 8:55deciding to be aggressive or try and get
240. 8:57around. It's doing the right thing.
241. 8:59Or pick parking lot. We're going to
242. 9:01leave it on parking lot.
243. 9:03Slide this over so we can see what's
244. 9:04going on again. Play around with the
245. 9:06zoom.
246. 9:07This does seem to stick as I said.
247. 9:10Kind of like the full zoomed in portion.
248. 9:13We'll just keep it there for now.
249. 9:16And for now we sit here and we wait
250. 9:18until
251. 9:19we get the light. People are looking at
252. 9:22the camera that I have on top of the car
253. 9:25giving me some strange looks. I'm sure
254. 9:27it looks pretty ridiculous.
255. 9:29Um
256. 9:30but uh it's just what you got to do in
257. 9:31order to get these kinds of videos.
258. 9:33Right-hand turn again, perfect.
259. 9:36We're going to be coming into my
260. 9:37workplace parking lot. Again, it's a
261. 9:39Sunday, so no one's there. So, it's got
262. 9:41the full wide open parking lot. And when
263. 9:43that has that option, it really
264. 9:45struggles sometimes. It's done a lot of
265. 9:47crazy things. Let's see if this version
266. 9:51does any better.

269. 10:02Are we going to do it? Got a right-hand
270. 10:04signal. That's good. That's a good sign.
271. 10:06This is my spot right here in the
272. 10:08corner. Look at this, people.
273. 10:10We are pulling in
274. 10:14to my parking spot in an empty
275. 10:17parking lot. Something that it hasn't
276. 10:19done in a very long time.
277. 10:23Wow. There you go.
278. 10:25What a drive.
279. 10:26Frankly, a perfect drive. Um all the
280. 10:29parking was spotless, which has been the
281. 10:31being massive pain point up to this
282. 10:33point in time. So,
283. 10:35first drive 14.3.8
284. 10:37in the books, and I have to admit, I
285. 10:38think FSD has its mojo back.
286. 10:42Um because this one This one is really
287. 10:44good. And I know some people have had
288. 10:45different experiences based on where
289. 10:47they're at. But for me, on that
290. 10:48particular drive,
291. 10:50it was awesome. So, hopefully you
