- 0:07Each of my design projects begins with a
- 0:09reference, an example project,
- 0:11materials, textures, and this is where
- 0:13[music] the ideas start to take shape. A
- 0:15mood board is really great for that, to
- 0:17compile inspiration, references, and a
- 0:19starting point for visualizing your
- 0:20[music] projects. In this video, I want
- 0:23to show you how I use mood boards to
- 0:24inform my drawings without the
- 0:26inspiration [music] getting diluted or
- 0:28lost along the way. Using Rayon, I'll
- 0:30walk through a [music] simple workflow
- 0:32that keeps inspiration and documentation
- 0:34connected. We'll start by building a
- 0:36material and color mood board for a
- 0:38[music] mock project and then translate
- 0:40that directly into a floor plan using
- 0:42the same space [music] throughout. The
- 0:44goal is simple to move seamlessly from
- 0:46visual ideas to clear expressive [music]
- 0:48drawings that communicate materiality,
- 0:50atmosphere, and design intent to our
- 0:52client and stakeholders from the very
- 0:54beginning. Before we get into it, if
- 0:56you'd like to follow along or try this
- 0:57workflow for yourself, there's a link in
- 0:59the description where you can create
- 1:00your free Rayon account. [music]
- 1:05And the way Rayon works is that they
- 1:07have model and paper canvases. [music]
- 1:08In this case, we're going to create a
- 1:10paper canvas for the mood board. Click
- 1:12the plus button, [music] create our
- 1:14paper canvas, and we're going to rename
- 1:15it to a material and mood board. This is
- 1:18where I collect references, materials,
- 1:20colors, textures, and [music]
- 1:21precedents. In my model canvas, I have a
- 1:23floor plan that I will apply my mood
- 1:25board inspiration to. So, make sure you
- 1:27stay to the end of the video to see the
- 1:29finished floor [music] plan. This mood
- 1:30board will aim to set the direction for
- 1:32a warm, expressive kitchen defined by
- 1:34natural materials and tactile detail.
- 1:36[music] I'd like to explore rich timber
- 1:38tones, light stone surfaces, and a
- 1:40balance between refined craftsmanship
- 1:43and relaxed livedin character
- 1:45establishing the visual and material
- 1:47language that will guide the design
- 1:48document. Images can come from anywhere.
- 1:50you can copy and paste them directly
- 1:52from a browser. So when I'm looking for
- 1:54references, I'm looking for certain
- 1:56types of material combinations. In this
- 1:58case, I'm looking for kind of a dark
- 2:00wood but with a marble stone finish.
- 2:03[music] So you have that kind of
- 2:04contrast between the wood and maybe a
- 2:07white marble. In this [music] case here,
- 2:08this is a strong image where you have
- 2:10that strong contrast between the two. So
- 2:12we can copy that into our mood board,
- 2:14which you can see here, I've already
- 2:15dropped a bit of a color palette on um
- 2:18to indicate those warm tones. And also
- 2:20[music] this image that I already have
- 2:21here that shows these kind of it's kind
- 2:23of wooden and rustic. [music] And then
- 2:25you can start playing with the mood
- 2:26board. You can start scaling them uh
- 2:28scaling these images, positioning them
- 2:29correctly to how you want to [music]
- 2:32construct your um your thinking and your
- 2:34design inspiration. You can rotate,
- 2:36shift, you can start editing those
- 2:37images, flipping them, etc. [music] to
- 2:40customize your presentation.
- 2:41Additionally, you can double click into
- 2:43the image. You can crop the image if
- 2:45there are certain elements that you want
- 2:46to crop [music] out. Now, I want to
- 2:47start looking for some furniture that I
- 2:49want to add to this mood board. And I'll
- 2:51show you a really clever tool that Rowan
- 2:53has. [music] So, if we go in here, we
- 2:54want to find a walnut wooden chair. I
- 2:56want to copy that image, paste it into
- 2:58our mood board, [music] and position it
- 3:00like so. Now, from this point, we can
- 3:02then start adjusting and editing this
- 3:05image [music] using the tools on the
- 3:07right hand side. So, we've got various
- 3:08options here. We've got upscale, we can
- 3:10generate products, we can remove
- 3:11background. We're going to click remove
- 3:13background, which [music] will cut out
- 3:15the background of this image and leave
- 3:17the furniture by itself. And on the
- 3:20right hand side here, you can make some
- 3:21small and minor changes to exposure,
- 3:23contrast, saturation to customize the
- 3:25image for your mood board. [music] Then
- 3:28the final piece to this image is to make
- 3:30sure it's on the correct layer and also
- 3:32[music] make sure that it's brought to
- 3:33the front of that layer so that we can
- 3:35then place it into our mood board. So,
- 3:37we head to the top right corner, change
- 3:39[music] it to our photos layer, which
- 3:40means that it sits in front of the
- 3:42images. Once the board starts to feel
- 3:44cohesive, I [music] will start to pull
- 3:46out materials and colors. And I'm now
- 3:48going to start doing this by building
- 3:49textures and material finishes [music]
- 3:51that we'd like to use as part of the
- 3:52mood board and to implement into the
- 3:54drawings. So, to start adding colors and
- 3:56material finishes to [music] our mood
- 3:59board, I'm just going to find a
- 4:00particular finish that I'd like to add.
- 4:02I'm going to draw a rectangle [music]
- 4:04and I'm going to create it as a style.
- 4:06So you can then pick a style. It will
- 4:08then essentially apply that image to
- 4:10that style. You can then add a stroke to
- 4:12[music] that particular rectangle. And
- 4:14this is essentially making a material
- 4:16swatch, [music] a material palette that
- 4:19will then be able to apply to your
- 4:20drawings. Alternatively, if you can't
- 4:23find the materials you're looking for,
- 4:24you can also look through the rayon
- 4:25[music] material and texture library
- 4:28where you'll see on the left hand side
- 4:29here, they've got many textures and
- 4:30hatches that you can also apply to your
- 4:32drawings. [music] And then you can
- 4:34compose them as you wish. In this case,
- 4:36I've composed them now into a one page
- 4:38where [music] I've added some kind of
- 4:40text and some annotations to my color
- 4:43palette. I've customized them slightly
- 4:44by dropping the opacity down and [music]
- 4:46adding something in the back layer to
- 4:48make it look and feel a little bit more
- 4:49dynamic. And then if I want to actually
- 4:51start exploring some alternative images
- 4:54of some of the references that I found,
- 4:56for example, this [music] center image
- 4:58here where I have a darker piece of
- 5:00wood, maybe I want to explore a lighter
- 5:02piece of wood or a different [music]
- 5:03finished tap, for example. You can use
- 5:06Rayon's built-in AI features. So head to
- 5:08the left hand side here and head to the
- 5:10AI chat. You can select your selected
- 5:12[music] image and then you can apply
- 5:15certain tools um AI tools to that image.
- 5:18In this case, we're [music] going to do
- 5:19generate image. And then you can prompt
- 5:21it. So, we're going to do make the wood
- 5:23lighter. And you'll see here that it
- 5:25will generate an image or a version of
- 5:27that [music] that image that we've
- 5:29imported with a lighter wood, which is
- 5:31really quick and powerful if you want to
- 5:32start visualizing [music] alternative
- 5:35colors or alternative finishes to your
- 5:37images. You can also then reuse that
- 5:40image and maybe prompt it to add a uh a
- 5:44gold tap, [music] for example. And so
- 5:46we'll make a tap make the tap gold. And
- 5:48you'll see here that it will generate an
- 5:50image of that tap [music] in gold. So
- 5:53this is really powerful if you are
- 5:55trying to build a mood board and you're
- 5:56[music] trying to test ideas using that
- 5:58mood board as well. So using your
- 6:00references to start visualize your
- 6:02project [music] and test different ideas
- 6:04to show to your clients. This is
- 6:05extremely powerful. This becomes the
- 6:07visual reference for the drawings,
- 6:08[music] a shared language for the
- 6:10project. At this stage AI is great for
- 6:13exploration and ideation. It's about
- 6:15testing ideas quickly, not locking
- 6:17anything in. [music]
- 6:21The important thing is this. The mood
- 6:23board doesn't sit off [music] the side.
- 6:25It actively informs how the drawings are
- 6:27styled. Now, I'll switch to the model
- 6:29canvas and I'll show how this transition
- 6:31[music] happens. Here's a simple floor
- 6:32plan for the same project I drew in the
- 6:34software. This is to scale and can be
- 6:36edited and adjusted as you please, as
- 6:39you change your design along the way.
- 6:41The beauty of Rayon is that everything
- 6:42[music] lives in one place. I can
- 6:44reference the mood board while working.
- 6:46No second screen required. And this is
- 6:48where the style panel becomes really
- 6:50powerful. Now, the way that the style
- 6:52panel works and that works really well
- 6:53[music] in this instance alongside this
- 6:55mood board is that you can start picking
- 6:57up on some of the elements and some of
- 6:59the materials that you want to apply to
- 7:00the drawing [music] and simply start
- 7:02picking those elements and copying them
- 7:03across. So, we have a drawing set up
- 7:05here. We've got the floor plan with some
- 7:07kind of zoom in callout elements [music]
- 7:09uh for the kitchens. And you can select
- 7:11certain elements. Head over to the right
- 7:13hand side here to the style panel and
- 7:14start picking and choosing some of the
- 7:16the finishes [music] you want to apply.
- 7:18So in this case, we're going to add a
- 7:20timber finish for this worktop here. We
- 7:22can then pick [music] a style and we can
- 7:25choose the style that we've created from
- 7:26our mood board. So that marble [music]
- 7:28finish. Once again, you can basically go
- 7:30across all of your elements and start
- 7:32picking [music] and choosing the styles
- 7:34that you want to apply. the block
- 7:36elements. You can double click into
- 7:37them, [music] pick your style, and it
- 7:39will apply across all of the blocks, all
- 7:42of the same block associated uh in the
- 7:45model. In this case, we're going to
- 7:47apply this kind of wood [music] uh this
- 7:49dark wood finish to these bar stools.
- 7:51So, we've got this kind of contrast that
- 7:53we've created from the mood board. We're
- 7:55going to apply some kind of metal
- 7:56[music] finishes to um the sink, for
- 7:59example, and to the cooker.
- 8:03And as you can see here, when you work
- 8:04into the floor plan, you can see that
- 8:06the mood board is directly informing
- 8:08[music] the materials applied to the
- 8:10floor plan. This helps clients and
- 8:12viewers immediately understand material
- 8:14intent, [music] even in a technical
- 8:15drawing. And you can pull a material
- 8:17swatch from your mood board. In this
- 8:19case, you can select those elements. You
- 8:21can then save [music] that style, which
- 8:23you can then apply to materials across
- 8:25your floor plan. So, I'm going to save
- 8:26this [music] as a timber finish and
- 8:27these various other elements as metal
- 8:29finish, marble finish. Then when you
- 8:31select a particular component, you can
- 8:33then [music] do replace all and select
- 8:35that saved style. And this will help you
- 8:38build your style library that you can
- 8:39implement across [music] your drawing.
- 8:41This keeps plans, sections, and
- 8:42elevations visually aligned without the
- 8:44extra effort. Once drawings and mood
- 8:46boards speak the same language, [music]
- 8:48the presentation becomes much easier.
- 8:51You can place drawings and mood boards
- 8:53together showing intent [music] and
- 8:54resolution side by side. To build the
- 8:57presentation, have those drawings and
- 8:58mood boards side by side. [music] We're
- 9:00going to create a page in our paper
- 9:01canvas. I'm going to create that as an
- 9:03A3 page. And you can see here that you
- 9:06can then add your title blocks and
- 9:07annotations to that [music] page. So,
- 9:09we're going to scroll down to title
- 9:11blocks and annotations. And we're going
- 9:13to drag in one of these options. [music]
- 9:15And you'll see that there are various
- 9:16options for title blocks that you can
- 9:18import. And of course, you can create
- 9:19your own. So, in this case here, I'm
- 9:21going to drop in a a kind of black and
- 9:23white one, which [music] you can then
- 9:24double click into and start making
- 9:26changes to that particular block. So for
- 9:28example, we can change the date. But
- 9:30alternatively, there are other blocks
- 9:32that have [music] various color
- 9:34assignments and various other designs
- 9:36and graphic communications. And this
- 9:38particular one I quite like because it
- 9:40has quite [music] a a subtle kind of
- 9:42pastely color uh that suits the
- 9:44presentation that we want to build. And
- 9:46so you can also edit that style. You can
- 9:47change the [music] color of that palette
- 9:49if you wish. And in order to create
- 9:52viewports into that mood board and
- 9:54drawing that we've [music] created,
- 9:55we're going to create a view into that
- 9:57model canvas where we have our floor
- 9:58plan. And you can see here it will drop
- 10:00onto our page. And you can then scale
- 10:03[music] and crop it as you wish. We're
- 10:05going to crop this down to focus on the
- 10:08kitchen area. [music]
- 10:11And you can adjust the scale to 1 to 50
- 10:14or zoom in further if you wish. Then I'm
- 10:16going to create another view into the
- 10:18material and mood board that we've
- 10:20created. I'm going to drag and drop this
- 10:21into place and start cropping and
- 10:23[music] placing it alongside the color
- 10:25palette alongside uh the mood board to
- 10:28then start getting a feel for the
- 10:30character of that space and its
- 10:31association with the floor plan. We can
- 10:33then add titles and text [music] to then
- 10:36start building a presentation that looks
- 10:37something like this where you have your
- 10:39material palettes, you have your mood
- 10:41boards, you have your color palettes all
- 10:44side by side as part of a presentation
- 10:45[music]
- 10:46in order to communicate that design
- 10:48intent, that design language of your
- 10:50floor plans [music] and how you envision
- 10:52those spaces to work. And from here, you
- 10:54can export a PDF or share a presentation
- 10:56[music] that always stays up to date.
- 10:58Material intent shouldn't disappear when
- 11:00drawings begin. When inspiration and
- 11:02documents live [music] together,
- 11:04drawings become much clearer, more
- 11:06expressive, and easier to understand for
- 11:09clients [music] and for teams. This is
- 11:11how I move from mood boards to drawings
- 11:13without losing the original idea. Try
- 11:15this workflow for your next project,
- 11:17[music] even a small one, and see how
- 11:19much clearer your drawings become. You
- 11:21can explore Rayon [music] for free along
- 11:23with access to the drawings used in this
- 11:24tutorial. And I'll see you in the next
- 11:26video.
