- 0:00Most of us have probably had a room like
- 0:02this at some point. You own furniture
- 0:04you genuinely like and everything
- 0:06functions reasonably well. At the same
- 0:08time, you find yourself looking around
- 0:10wondering why the space doesn't feel as
- 0:12good as it should. That was the
- 0:14situation with Cliff. He had a
- 0:16generously sized primary bedroom in his
- 0:18condo, a beautiful arched window, a
- 0:20vaulted ceiling, and some substantial
- 0:23traditional furniture he wanted to keep,
- 0:25but he was tired of the same plainness
- 0:28that runs throughout the condo. You can
- 0:30see why. The pale walls, light carpet,
- 0:32typical ceiling fan, television resting
- 0:35on a dresser. These all have purpose,
- 0:37but they leave the desire for more
- 0:39because the room hasn't been developed
- 0:41as a complete interior. There was so
- 0:43much potential that already existed. The
- 0:46architecture had some character. The
- 0:48wooden sleigh bed and the matching
- 0:50nightstands gave us something to work
- 0:52with. There wasn't a need to pull the
- 0:54dumpster out back and begin tossing
- 0:56everything. The stage was set. Now,
- 0:59before we get into the design, there's
- 1:01something particularly satisfying about
- 1:03this project. Cliff was kind enough to
- 1:05send us photographs of his bedroom after
- 1:08bringing our design direction to life.
- 1:11He was excited to share the results and
- 1:12told us he'd already received several
- 1:15compliments on the transformation.
- 1:16Looking at how well he put the direction
- 1:19together, I can certainly understand
- 1:20why. It's rewarding to see concepts
- 1:23brought to life in a physical space, and
- 1:25Cliff did a wonderful job. My name is
- 1:27Chaudry, and today we're walking through
- 1:29the transformation
- 1:29of a bedroom whose potential was waiting
- 1:32to be unveiled. If you're a returning
- 1:34subscriber, hit the thumbs up. If you're
- 1:36new here, hopefully by the end of this
- 1:38video, you'll be a subscriber. Remember
- 1:40that if you would like our help in

- 1:45description below.
- 1:47Before choosing paint or furnishings, we
- 1:50needed to decide what sort of atmosphere
- 1:53the bedroom should have. A masculine
- 1:55bedroom can go in several directions.
- 1:57You can keep everything contemporary and
- 1:59restrained or draw from more traditional
- 2:01interiors with substantial woodwork,
- 2:03layered textiles, and a sense of
- 2:05history. For Cliff, the idea was to
- 2:08combine some of those qualities. The
- 2:10room should feel established and
- 2:12sophisticated, but still comfortable
- 2:14enough that you'd enjoy spending a quiet
- 2:16evening there. We settled on a direction
- 2:19that lives in the realm of masculine
- 2:20modern with influences from English
- 2:23country interiors and modern rustic
- 2:25design. That gave us room to work with
- 2:27classic molding, deep color, natural
- 2:30timber, leather, and a few more
- 2:32contemporary details. And it meant
- 2:34Cliff's existing furniture could become
- 2:36part of the design rather than an
- 2:38obstacle to it. Cliff's sleigh bed is a
- 2:40large and weighty piece. It has a tall,
- 2:43curved wooden headboard, decorative
- 2:45paneling, and a warm finish. The
- 2:47matching nightstands are equally
- 2:49traditional. Homeowners sometimes
- 2:51underestimate how much the setting
- 2:53affects their opinion of their own
- 2:55furniture. They'll decide a room looks
- 2:57dated and immediately start shopping for
- 2:58a new bed or dresser. When the real
- 3:01difficulty is everything surrounding
- 3:03those pieces. Cliff's bed was nice and
- 3:05very in line with what he wanted the
- 3:07room to become. It had good proportions
- 3:09and considerably more personality than
- 3:11many of the simpler beds you see made
- 3:14today. Against the original pale gray
- 3:16wall though, it looked like a
- 3:18traditional bed that had simply been
- 3:19placed in a plain room. The surroundings
- 3:22were handicapping strong qualities of
- 3:25this bed frame. We needed those
- 3:26qualities to be more apparent. That led
- 3:29us to the architecture. The original
- 3:31walls were almost completely
- 3:32uninterrupted. There was thin base
- 3:34molding and some encasement around the
- 3:37door frames, but primarily it was a sea
- 3:39of drywall. No decorative millwork, no
- 3:41paneling, and very little depth. The
- 3:44furniture was being asked to provide
- 3:45nearly all of the visual interest in the
- 3:47room. We introduced picture frame
- 3:50molding behind the bed proportioned
- 3:52around the headboard. It gives the wall
- 3:53a more deliberate composition and
- 3:56because the bed is sizable, the
- 3:57architectural treatment should feel
- 3:59appropriate to its scale. We continued
- 4:01that language with paneled rectangular
- 4:04shaped wainscoting and complementary
- 4:05trim throughout the room. Then we moved
- 4:07away from the pale gray and introduced a
- 4:10deep charcoal across the walls and
- 4:12molding. That is a dramatic change and
- 4:15it does make an extraordinary difference
- 4:17in how the furniture is perceived. The
- 4:19wood looks warmer, the curve of the
- 4:21headboard becomes more pronounced and
- 4:23the room begins to feel more enclosed.
- 4:26You can see what happens to the molding
- 4:27in low light. The raised profiles catch
- 4:30illumination from the lamps while the
- 4:32recessed areas fall into shadow. Even
- 4:34though the wall and trim share the same
- 4:37paint color, you can see the depth of
- 4:39the detailing. The architecture now
- 4:41contributes to the atmosphere instead of
- 4:42merely containing the furniture.
- 4:45Behind the bed within the center
- 4:46molding, we introduced a muted plaid
- 4:49pattern. It has a tailored heritage
- 4:51inspired quality that brings a little
- 4:53English country character into the room,
- 4:55which you will see communicated to the
- 4:57other side as well. The artwork was a
- 4:59personal part of the project. Cliff
- 5:01selected a piece created and sold by
- 5:03House of 1804, a gentleman dressed
- 5:06sharply as if for an occasion of proper
- 5:08attire, yet his posture is relaxed and
- 5:11there's a sense of calm surroundings.
- 5:13He's present and respectable. At the
- 5:15same time his mind is consumed with
- 5:18flourishing creativity. This is my
- 5:20interpretation at least. Cliff explained
- 5:21that the piece was culturally meaningful
- 5:23to him and represented life, beauty, and
- 5:26style. It's enjoyable to see artwork
- 5:28with that kind of personal connection.
- 5:30And notice the contrast. You have a
- 5:32formal architectural setting containing
- 5:35something imaginative and unexpected.
- 5:37It's a great addition to prevent the
- 5:39room from becoming predictable. The wall
- 5:41opposite the bed needed just as much
- 5:43consideration. Originally, the
- 5:45television sat on a dresser beside a
- 5:47small desk. From a utility standpoint,
- 5:49it makes sense, but there wasn't much to
- 5:51look at beyond the television itself.
- 5:54For the redesign, we developed a central
- 5:56section of vertical wood slats,
- 5:58implementing that plaid wallpaper from
- 6:01behind the bed on both sides, then
- 6:03placing dark paneled wainscoting below.
- 6:05The slatted area becomes a platform for
- 6:08the TV to be displayed with the dresser
- 6:10remaining below it. There's quite a bit
- 6:12happening here, but each material
- 6:14occupies a defined portion of the wall.
- 6:17The slats bring a more contemporary
- 6:19influence and emphasize the room's
- 6:20height. The plaid recalls the pattern
- 6:23behind the bed, and the wainscoting ties
- 6:25the composition back to the rest of the
- 6:27architecture. That repetition is
- 6:29important. When you're combining details
- 6:32from different styles, they need some
- 6:33common ground. Here, the repeated plaid,
- 6:36related wood tones, and consistent dark
- 6:38trim help two very different walls feel
- 6:41like parts of the same room. Dark rooms
- 6:44will always need some care. It's
- 6:46important that we're aware of that. If
- 6:48every large object occupies the same
- 6:50deep tonal range, the individual pieces
- 6:53start disappearing into one another, and
- 6:55the result can feel heavy. Cliff's warm
- 6:58wooden furniture helped us avoid that.
- 7:00We built on its color with brown
- 7:01leather, terracotta textiles,
- 7:03copper-colored ceramic lamps, and a
- 7:06faded traditional rug with clay
- 7:08undertones. What I like about these
- 7:10elements are their differences and how
- 7:12they're able to come together, like how
- 7:13leather reflects light differently from
- 7:16timber, and ceramics have a surface
- 7:18character unique compared to everything
- 7:20else. The woven fabrics bring a softness
- 7:22into the equation. The colors are
- 7:24related, but nothing feels like a
- 7:26matching set. For the bedding, ivory and
- 7:29cream were used as a lighter foundation,
- 7:31then muted terracotta pillows and a warm
- 7:34gray throw were introduced. Beyond that,
- 7:36you have complementary patterns living
- 7:38within the pillows. The lighter bedding
- 7:40is useful when paired with a significant
- 7:43frame like a sleigh bed. It provides
- 7:45relief from the darker surroundings and
- 7:47makes the center of the room feel
- 7:48inviting. The faded rug introduces a
- 7:51less regular pattern beneath the bed,
- 7:53balancing the more structured plaid on
- 7:55the walls. You might have noticed that
- 7:57the flooring has also been replaced in
- 7:59this room. If you're curious to know
- 8:01what it is, this is a 7-in plank LVP
- 8:04flooring made by Highbank Collection.
- 8:07Specifically, it's part of their channel
- 8:09product line and the finished is called
- 8:11pumice. Cliff told us that he wanted to
- 8:14install this flooring and it was an
- 8:15excellent decision. The weathered muted
- 8:17brown tones complement the darker
- 8:19architecture while providing a more
- 8:21natural transition between the wooden
- 8:23furniture and the pattern rug. It also
- 8:25gives the entire room a more fixed
- 8:27appearance. You always want to know what
- 8:29a bedroom is going to look like after
- 8:31sunset. A room can feel marvelously
- 8:34assembled in daylight and become
- 8:36curiously flat in the evening when
- 8:38everything depends on one overhead
- 8:40fixture. We've talked about handling
- 8:42this many times and that's of course
- 8:44what we're doing here, incorporating
- 8:46several different sources of light.
- 8:48Copper glass lamps sit on the
- 8:50nightstands casting a warm wash across
- 8:52the paneling behind the bed. The black
- 8:54metal fluted sconces add smaller points
- 8:57of warm light on the adjacent side. A
- 8:59drum chandelier gives the vaulted
- 9:01ceiling a more intentional focal point
- 9:03while a traditional bronze lamp serves
- 9:05the seating area by the window. This
- 9:07arrangement gives Cliff a lot of freedom
- 9:09in how he chooses to make the room
- 9:11appear and feel. Think about the
- 9:13combinations. He could turn on the floor
- 9:15lamp and sconce lights leaving
- 9:16everything else off. He could turn on
- 9:18the bedside lamps and light a candle on
- 9:20the opposite side of the room. He could
- 9:22use the overhead light only with warmer
- 9:24bulbs. The areas being illuminated are
- 9:27going to stand out against the charcoal
- 9:29while other areas will recede into
- 9:30shadow. That variation does a great deal
- 9:33to establish the room's evening
- 9:35character.
- 9:36Between the bathroom and entry doorway,
- 9:38Cliff originally had an upholstered
- 9:40chair. Though I'm sure it was very
- 9:42useful to sit on while putting on or
- 9:44taking off shoes, its placement and
- 9:46style felt a bit disconnected from the
- 9:48room. Its replacement became a brown
- 9:51wingback chair with a vintage finish. It
- 9:53was placed on the window side of the
- 9:55room, paired with a round pedestal side
- 9:57table, and a standing lamp. It's a
- 10:00simple arrangement, but it gives that
- 10:01corner a clear purpose, somewhere to
- 10:04read, enjoy a morning coffee, or spend
- 10:06time in the bedroom without having to
- 10:08sit on the bed. The chair's high back
- 10:10traditional silhouette also relates
- 10:11nicely to the sleigh bed. For the
- 10:13window, we chose mink color drapery
- 10:15panels with a soft woven texture. The
- 10:1811-ft length emphasizes the height of
- 10:20that distinctive arch opening while
- 10:22allowing it to remain a feature. If
- 10:24you're wondering, mink is not a commonly
- 10:26known color. It's a neutral that sits
- 10:28between its more well-known brethren,
- 10:31taupe, gray, and beige.
- 10:33When you describe the individual
- 10:35ingredients of this bedroom, it sounds
- 10:37like an unusual combination. You have a
- 10:39traditional sleigh bed, classical
- 10:41molding, English-inspired plaid,
- 10:43contemporary wood slats, rustic
- 10:46upholstery, and expressive artwork. But
- 10:48look at the connections between them.
- 10:50The timber slats relate to the wooden
- 10:52furniture. The plaid repeats across
- 10:54opposite walls. The vintage finish chair
- 10:56picks up the warmth in the bedding and
- 10:58the rug, and the charcoal gives
- 11:00everything a consistent background.
- 11:02Sometimes people can become too
- 11:04concerned with finding one precise label
- 11:07for their taste, traditional,
- 11:09transitional, modern, rustic,
- 11:11contemporary. Those categories are
- 11:13useful references, but they shouldn't
- 11:14prevent you from combining the things
- 11:16that you genuinely appreciate. What
- 11:18matters is whether the elements
- 11:20establish a relationship with one
- 11:22another. Cliff's bed and nightstands
- 11:24haven't changed. Their shape, finish,
- 11:26and decorative details are exactly the
- 11:28same as they were before. Yet their
- 11:30presence and contribution to the room is
- 11:32on a different level completely. The
- 11:34difference is the setting. Against plain
- 11:37faded grey walls, they appeared
- 11:39ordinary. Surrounded by charcoal
- 11:41paneling, warm materials, and defined
- 11:43lighting, their traditional qualities
- 11:45have become assets. Underneath all of
- 11:47this is a rather simple principle, one
- 11:49that applies to many homes and all sorts
- 11:52of rooms. Before deciding that a
- 11:54familiar piece of furniture has outlived
- 11:56its usefulness, it's worth asking
- 11:58whether the room around it has ever
- 12:00given it a chance to step forward. Like
- 12:02comic book superheroes, exceptional
- 12:04furniture has a way of masking its
- 12:06potential, hidden until called into
- 12:08action. It's only when the setting
- 12:10becomes right that those pieces show the
- 12:13power of what they can contribute. If
- 12:15you like the video, hit the thumbs up.
- 12:17If you feel like sticking around a
- 12:18while, feel free to subscribe. See you
- 12:20in the next one.
