From 2D to 3D: Extracting Isometric Views with Rayon’s SketchUp Plugin — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02Hi, I'm Meg and I'm an interior designer
- 0:04and visual media specialist based right
- 0:06here in the United States. And welcome
- 0:07to class 9 of module 2 of the interior
- 0:09design playbook. This session where we
- 0:11go from 2D to 3D extracting isometric
- 0:14views with Rayon's SketchUp plug-in is
- 0:16all about best practices for design
- 0:18documentation. In this class, you'll
- 0:20learn how to take your 2D drawings from
- 0:21Rayon and quickly generate 3D models in
- 0:24SketchUp, extruding walls, placing
- 0:25openings, and building your 3D model
- 0:27with just a few clicks. From there,
- 0:28we're going to create some more views
- 0:30like isometric views, elevations,
- 0:32sections, and more, and then bring them
- 0:34back into Rayon to enrich your
- 0:36presentations with styling and
- 0:37annotations. By the end of this lesson,
- 0:39you will see how this plug-in becomes a
- 0:41true bridge between 2D and 3D, helping
- 0:43you deliver a polished, professional
- 0:45documentation set that clients,
- 0:47stakeholders, and you can easily
- 0:49understand. If you'd like to follow
- 0:50along with me, you can download the free
- 0:52template that's linked right below. And
- 0:53if you'd like more personalized
- 0:55guidance, you can also book a demo call
- 0:56with the Rayon team using the link in
- 0:58the description. Finally, if you find
- 1:00this tutorial helpful, don't forget to
- 1:01like, comment, and subscribe for more
- 1:03lessons like this one. Let's dive in.
- 1:05So, we have been working on this ranch
- 1:07house, right? So, we've already created
- 1:08our floor plan, sections, elevations,
- 1:11created schedules, mood boards,
- 1:13everything right inside of Rayon Design.
- 1:15But now I would like to take this 2D
- 1:17floor plan and add a 3D isometric view
- 1:20to strengthen our client buyin and help
- 1:22stakeholders better understand our
- 1:24design. So in order to do this, we're
- 1:26going to jump into SketchUp and install
- 1:28the Rayon plugin. This is going to allow
- 1:31us to move seamlessly between 2D and 3D.
- 1:34And this way we can generate isometric
- 1:36views in SketchUp. And then we'll bring
- 1:37them back into our presentation set in
- 1:39Rayon to kind of spruce them up a little
- 1:41bit. So, I am in SketchUp right now in
- 1:44my little template file and I'm going to
- 1:46show you how to install the Rayon
- 1:48plugin. I already have it installed, but
- 1:50I will take you through the process of
- 1:52how to do it. So, all you're going to do
- 1:54is go to your extensions up here and
- 1:56we'll go to extension warehouse and this
- 1:58is where we're going to search for the
- 2:00Rayon plugin. So, I'll just type in
- 2:02Rayon and you can see right here that it
- 2:05comes up and if you just click free and
- 2:07then install, it will install that into
- 2:10your SketchUp. And then once you do
- 2:12that, you should be able to go up here
- 2:14to your extensions and see rayon right
- 2:17here. In the drop-own menu, you will
- 2:19also see a little extension block right
- 2:22here with the R on it. Once you either
- 2:24click here or in the drop-own menu, it
- 2:26is going to launch Rayon. So, this will
- 2:29prompt you to sign into your account and
- 2:31that way it can link it between your web
- 2:34account of Rayon and right here in your
- 2:36plug-in. And so you can see that we have
- 2:38all of my files that I have worked on in
- 2:40Rayon as well as some templates. And
- 2:42this is just going to allow you to start
- 2:44by importing any of these files into
- 2:47SketchUp. What it's going to do is it's
- 2:49going to basically extrude our walls and
- 2:51mark the openings instantly for us and
- 2:54it's going to give us a really nice,
- 2:56pretty basic 3D representation of our
- 2:58space. So let me just show you how to go
- 3:00ahead and import one of your floor plans
- 3:03and we can take a look at what kind of
- 3:043D view that makes. So, I have our floor
- 3:07plan right here, and I'm just going to
- 3:08click this little um down arrow, which
- 3:11is basically going to ask me to import
- 3:13it into SketchUp. Now, you'll see right
- 3:15here that it's going to list your
- 3:16canvases. I want to bring in my floor
- 3:19plan. And then these numbers right here,
- 3:21you might want to edit. So, what this is
- 3:24going to do is it's going to take every
- 3:25single wall that you have drawn as a
- 3:27wall in your rayon file, and it's going
- 3:30to put a height to it. It's going to
- 3:32give it a zdepth. So, this is telling it
- 3:34that I want to make my wall height 10 ft
- 3:37tall. Also, probably should mention that
- 3:39your units are right here. So, I am
- 3:40working in feet. So, I'm telling it that
- 3:42I want all of my walls to be 10 ft. I
- 3:45want all of my door heights to be 7t. I
- 3:47want all my window heights to be 3t.
- 3:49Window sill height 2T. Now, not all of
- 3:51your windows might be that height. Not
- 3:53all of your doors might be that height,
- 3:54but it's going to start by giving you a
- 3:57good representation of the space in 3D.
- 3:59And then you can edit from there. I also
- 4:00like to check this box right here that
- 4:02says only import wall zones and openings
- 4:04because that just kind of keeps it
- 4:06clean. We really don't need any other
- 4:07junk coming in here. So that's up to you
- 4:10if you want to check that on or off. And
- 4:11then you will just simply hit import and
- 4:13you will wait just a minute or two. And
- 4:15what it's going to do is it's going to
- 4:17create a 3D model from that floor plan
- 4:19that you just brought in. Once this says
- 4:21that the model canvas was imported
- 4:22successfully, you can just close right
- 4:24out of here. Cancel that. And you can
- 4:27see that it has created a basic 3D model
- 4:30representation of our floor plan. So
- 4:33like I said, all of my walls are 10 ft
- 4:36tall. All my door openings are 7t tall
- 4:38and so on and so forth. So now you can
- 4:41see how we can start to get um some good
- 4:43like isometric views set up of our
- 4:45space. So I'd like to show you how to
- 4:48create uh one or two isometric scenes.
- 4:51Um, and then I also want to show you how
- 4:52to extract some sections and elevations
- 4:54from SketchUp and then further refine
- 4:57them in Rayon if you choose to do so. In
- 4:59order to set up a scene in SketchUp, all
- 5:01you have to do is just kind of find
- 5:02whatever place you uh want to highlight.
- 5:05So maybe let's do like a nice axon right
- 5:08here. And once you find the right view
- 5:11that you want, you just have to hit this
- 5:13little plus sign over here under scenes.
- 5:14If your scenes are not up here, you can
- 5:16find them under window scenes. and we're
- 5:20just going to hit the plus sign. And
- 5:21that's going to basically just make this
- 5:23a view. Now, you can further refine this
- 5:26view. You can change the style of your
- 5:28view. Um, you can even make this if you
- 5:31don't want it to be, you know, so
- 5:33orthographic, you can make it a
- 5:34perspective view. Just make sure that
- 5:36anytime that you update your view in
- 5:38SketchUp that you do update the scene.
- 5:40So, if I wanted to make sure that this
- 5:42was going to be a perspective, I would
- 5:44want to rightclick and go to update
- 5:46scene. Now I actually want to keep this
- 5:48as a parallel projection because I want
- 5:50it to look like a nice kind of like
- 5:51exploded axon type of thing. So we'll
- 5:54just leave that as that. I am going to
- 5:56rename this scene just by right clicking
- 5:58and I'll just say axon and that way we
- 6:00can easily identify that later. Now you
- 6:03can continue to add more. You can add
- 6:05just like little smaller areas like
- 6:07maybe we just want to do something right
- 6:09here. So, if I like that view, I can hit
- 6:12my plus sign again and maybe we'll call
- 6:14that
- 6:16axon 2. Now, the cool thing is too that
- 6:19you can start kind of opening up these
- 6:21walls. So, if maybe I thought, you know,
- 6:23I can't really see into this room, but I
- 6:26want to, you can always just add in a
- 6:28section plane. So, if I go up here to my
- 6:30tools and I go to section plane, and I
- 6:33just linger on the wall that I want to
- 6:35basically cut through, you can see that
- 6:37it kind of like snaps to different
- 6:39walls. If I just linger on that wall and
- 6:42then I grab my section plane so it's
- 6:44blue, then I can kind of move it in and
- 6:47you can see that we're starting to see
- 6:48into the space more. Now, keep in mind
- 6:51that you can actually only have one
- 6:52section plane active at a time in
- 6:54SketchUp. So, if you did want to add any
- 6:56more, you would have to start doing some
- 6:58groups, and that's a whole other
- 7:00discussion. But, just know that this is
- 7:02a possibility. And actually, I'm going
- 7:04to show you too how we can use section
- 7:06planes to create those section cuts or
- 7:09elevations to bring back into Rayon as
- 7:11well. So, we've got our two scenes set
- 7:13up. We've got this larger axon and then
- 7:15we've got this kind of like smaller
- 7:17close-up axon. Lastly, I want to show
- 7:19you how you can use those section planes
- 7:21that I was just telling you about to
- 7:22actually generate some sections in
- 7:25SketchUp. So, if we go back and grab our
- 7:27section plane and choose a wall that we
- 7:31want to cut through. So, let's just say
- 7:33let's say that we want to basically
- 7:35slice through right here, right? So, if
- 7:39we want to slice through right there, I
- 7:40need to grab my tools and click on
- 7:42section plane. And then I need to
- 7:44basically hover on this wall,
- 7:48hit okay. And then I want to make sure
- 7:49that it's blue. I want to make sure it's
- 7:50selected so I can move it. And I'll just
- 7:52hit my move key. And that way you can
- 7:54kind of move it to where you want to cut
- 7:56through. Now, I think that that looks
- 7:59like a pretty good place to cut through.
- 8:01So now you can kind of see the start of
- 8:03our elevation here, interior elevation
- 8:05or section, however you want to call it.
- 8:07So uh now we just need to get a head-on
- 8:09shot. So the way that I like to do that
- 8:10is just by clicking through my views up
- 8:12here. By the way, if your SketchUp uh
- 8:15looks a little bit different than mine,
- 8:16you can always just uh rightclick up
- 8:18here and customize toolbar um and drag
- 8:20any of these up there. I like to always
- 8:22have my views and my styles up here. I'm
- 8:25just going to click around here until I
- 8:26find the right side that shows this uh
- 8:30section that I've just created. So, it
- 8:32looks like right here is correct. And
- 8:34so, I'm going to hit the plus sign
- 8:36again. Just say create scene. I'm going
- 8:39to rightclick and rename it. Um, I will
- 8:42call this my section.
- 8:46So now if I click between these, every
- 8:48time that I do that, SketchUp remembers
- 8:51my layers and my scene and my settings
- 8:53and my styles. And so like if I go to
- 8:55this section now, now it remembers,
- 8:57okay, I've got a section plane there.
- 8:59Typically, if I'm working in SketchUp, I
- 9:01will spend some time refining the styles
- 9:03and the materials and all that stuff.
- 9:04But since we are taking these back into
- 9:06Rayon, we don't have to worry about that
- 9:07right now. Make sure you go ahead and
- 9:09save your file. And then we're going to
- 9:10import this back into Rayon. So, we will
- 9:13go ahead and click on that little R
- 9:14button again to launch our plugin. So,
- 9:17we're just going to click on export
- 9:19right here. And it's going to prompt us
- 9:21to select which views, which scenes uh
- 9:23we want to bring back into Rayon. And
- 9:25I'm going to say that I want all three
- 9:27of them. Um, you can also choose to
- 9:29export textures, which might uh make the
- 9:32process a little bit longer, as well as
- 9:34your complex objects. I'm just going to
- 9:35keep it simple and export these three
- 9:37views. For now, we'll say export, and
- 9:39it's going to do a little bit of
- 9:40thinking. It's going to create a rayon
- 9:42model for us and then we can go into
- 9:43rayon and edit that. So I'm just going
- 9:45to hit open here and it's actually going
- 9:47to open up our web browser so we can go
- 9:49back in and make any more like stylistic
- 9:52adjustments. So as you can see here it
- 9:54has just already created a canvas for us
- 9:56with our three different views that
- 9:58we've already created. So we've got our
- 9:59two different isometric views and then
- 10:01we've got our section view. And you can
- 10:02actually just move these around. They
- 10:04are basically just like grouped views
- 10:06which is beautiful. But as you can see,
- 10:08these look um pretty basic, right? So
- 10:11that's where Rayon can really change the
- 10:13game for you. And now we can fine-tune
- 10:16things like stroke widths. We can apply
- 10:18some colors, textures, hatches, add our
- 10:20annotations, and upgrade the isometric
- 10:23views to really pretty representations
- 10:25of our project. So let's go ahead and
- 10:27get started with that. So if we go into
- 10:29one of these views, if I double click in
- 10:31here, you can see that this basically
- 10:33group is made up of a bunch of different
- 10:36shapes. So these shapes are no different
- 10:39than the shapes that we have previously
- 10:41styled in our other drawings. So once
- 10:44you select the shape, you can add a
- 10:46style. So if we want to add a style,
- 10:49let's say on this exterior wall, let's
- 10:53add a new style. We're going to detach
- 10:55the current style. And then right here
- 10:57under solid, we will just kind of figure
- 10:59out what we want to do here. We can
- 11:01either pick a hatch or maybe we could do
- 11:04something. Let's do like a
- 11:09brick or something. So we can add brick
- 11:12and that is going to basically apply to
- 11:14the outside of our wall. Now if we like
- 11:16that for other walls, we can always just
- 11:17grab our little picker and then we can
- 11:19ey drop it on there. So essentially all
- 11:22of these faces that came in are their
- 11:24own shape that you can modify. So same
- 11:27goes for like this top part. Like if you
- 11:30want this to look like it's a nice
- 11:31little like black cut through or
- 11:32something, I can just detach, go to
- 11:35solid, put a nice black on there. And
- 11:38now it kind of looks like it's like
- 11:39cutting through a floor plan a little
- 11:40bit, right? You can also always add a
- 11:43zone if there's something that doesn't
- 11:44come in. Like I can see that a floor
- 11:46didn't come in over here. So we could
- 11:48always just draw our zone. So down here,
- 11:50I'm just going to click on zone. And
- 11:51then I'm just going to basically trace
- 11:53our space. And it's just going to create
- 11:55another shape for us essentially. And
- 11:57then we will be able to edit that the
- 11:59same way that we can edit anything else.
- 12:01So I can click on that. And if you need
- 12:03to adjust it, you know, go adjust it,
- 12:05just double click and move. And yeah, if
- 12:09we want to apply,
- 12:12you know, a red floor or something
- 12:13there, we can. Or if we want to do a
- 12:15texture. That's kind of how you can add
- 12:17in a shape. If for some reason it
- 12:19doesn't translate from SketchUp to
- 12:21Rayon, you can also always import a
- 12:24custom texture. So if there is a
- 12:25specific flooring or something, you can
- 12:28always go over into your styles here and
- 12:30go to your image and then actually
- 12:31upload your own image, adjust the
- 12:34rotation. Essentially, you know,
- 12:36everything that we've learned thus far
- 12:38in this course applies right here as
- 12:40well. Even though we're working kind of
- 12:42in 3D, it's really all the same
- 12:44fundamentals that we've learned so far
- 12:45in our 2D work. um we're just kind of
- 12:48bringing it into a different dimension.
- 12:50And honestly, the Rayon SketchUp plugin
- 12:52did the hard work for us. So now it's
- 12:54just kind of up to us to stylize it. As
- 12:57with any of our other drawings, you can
- 12:58also add in your leaders, text, all that
- 13:01kind of fun stuff. So if there's
- 13:02anything that you want to call out, you
- 13:04can just click on your leaders and add
- 13:06your text. Um same thing as before with
- 13:09our um different styles. If you need to
- 13:12change the size or uh the color or the
- 13:15font, you can always do that over here.
- 13:18So, let's maybe make this a little bit
- 13:20bigger. Additionally, if you'd like to
- 13:22add in maybe a photo to call something
- 13:24out, you can do that by copying and
- 13:26pasting a photo direct right directly
- 13:28here onto your canvas if you want,
- 13:29similar to our mood board lesson. So, if
- 13:32I maybe find a really nice wood floor
- 13:34that I like in Pinterest, I can just
- 13:35copy that image, go back into my file,
- 13:39paste it right here, and now you got the
- 13:41image directly here that you can just
- 13:43kind of reference and say, "Okay, this
- 13:45is actually going to be this exact
- 13:47flooring." And just kind of call it out
- 13:49that way. I always am a huge fan of
- 13:51adding in, you know, your inspiration
- 13:54and uh different actual materials and
- 13:57furniture selections to your technical
- 14:00drawings. cuz I think it's just such a
- 14:01fun juxosition. Now, all of these
- 14:03techniques also apply down here to our
- 14:05section. This is basically exactly the
- 14:07same. Like all of these uh shapes here
- 14:09are editable and you can detach their
- 14:12style and add a new style. You can also
- 14:14add in your dimensions, add in, you
- 14:16know, any of your uh annotations. That
- 14:19can all happen right here. So, if you
- 14:21want to, you know, spruce it up a little
- 14:22bit more here in Rayon, um this is where
- 14:25you would do that with a little bit of
- 14:27time and effort. This is what your
- 14:30isometric view could look like. So,
- 14:32again, we've got all of our um different
- 14:35shapes kind of colored in. We've got
- 14:37some zones called out. We've got um our
- 14:39little mini mood boards pointing to
- 14:41different rooms and spaces. And you can
- 14:45essentially tell that this isometric
- 14:48drawing goes with our floor plan from
- 14:50before because you can start to pick out
- 14:52certain elements like, oh, there's the
- 14:54pool, oh, there's this room, etc., etc.
- 14:56It really just helps kind of paint the
- 14:58entire picture. Now, lastly, in your
- 15:01paper canvas, you can create a page and
- 15:03basically place this drawing on the
- 15:05page. So, we are on our paper canvas and
- 15:08I will hit the plus sign by layers and
- 15:09I'm just going to say page and it's just
- 15:11going to drop a page here. Now, if you
- 15:13want to change the size of whatever size
- 15:14it brings in, you can just do that right
- 15:16over here and make sure that you know,
- 15:18especially if you're working to scale
- 15:19that you get that correct. Um, and once
- 15:22you have your page set up, then you can
- 15:24go back to that plus sign again, hit
- 15:26view, model canvas, and it's just going
- 15:28to drop your view from your model
- 15:30canvas. Now, if you need to adjust the
- 15:33frame at all, you just hold down your
- 15:34command key and make sure it looks
- 15:37however you want it to. Now, on this
- 15:40page, you can also create like a nice
- 15:42legend just by using your uh different
- 15:45shapes and text and anything else that
- 15:48you um might need to kind of point some
- 15:51things out. And that's pretty much it.
- 15:53Our documentation set is now complete
- 15:55and offers the best of both worlds. We
- 15:56have our 2D documentation and our 3D
- 15:58visualization. So, all the stakeholders
- 16:01can now have a comprehensive
- 16:03understanding of the project and space.
- 16:05And one thing to note just before
- 16:06exporting your presentation is that you
- 16:08can also share your model online with
- 16:10others. Add comments, annotations, and
- 16:12collect feedback directly on the canvas.
- 16:14You can just do this by clicking the
- 16:16share button over here in the top right
- 16:17corner. And you can invite people with
- 16:20their email, select them as an editor or
- 16:22just as a viewer. You can also make the
- 16:25link public and then just copy and paste
