Franz Kafka on Paperwork as a Form of Power — Transcript

- 0:00Kfka once wrote the chains that cuff
- 0:02humanity are made of office paper. It
- 0:05sounds exaggerated.
- 0:07Paper doesn't hurt. Paper doesn't
- 0:08threaten. Paper doesn't imprison. So why
- 0:11did Kfka call chains? Kfka wasn't
- 0:14talking about cruelty. He was talking
- 0:16about documents, forms, files,
- 0:19certificates, permits, papers that
- 0:22decide who you are, where you belong,
- 0:24and where the system even sees you. In
- 0:28modern life, paper often speaks louder
- 0:30than people. Without the right document,
- 0:32you may not exist for the system. You
- 0:35may not receive help. You may not cross
- 0:37a border. You may not prove who you are
- 0:40even when your life depends on it. This
- 0:43is why CFKA call them chains. Not
- 0:45because paper is violent, but because it
- 0:48quietly governs identity, access, and
- 0:51recognition. And it leads to a deeper
- 0:54question. If our existence must
- 0:56constantly be proven on paper, can human
- 0:59life still have meaning and [music]
- 1:01dignity beyond it? Do share your
- 1:04thoughts.
