- 0:58Packard 288 cubic inch straight flathead

- 1:06couple pictures of this thing on the
- 1:07interwebs there and had to have it. It
- 1:09was even covered in snow. Couldn't
- 1:11really see everything. But nonetheless,
- 1:14we went and loaded her up on the
- 1:15trailer. Hid it in my tree row for quite
- 1:17a while. But listen, the snow is gone,
- 1:19fellas. Let's go hook a chain on this
- 1:22thing. drag her up here to the shed and
- 1:24see if we can get this thing running and
- 1:26driving.

- 4:28Only took me a couple minutes and I just
- 4:30I got all my fingers. Here's my favorite
- 4:33and the best part, fellas. Funds raised
- 4:35will support afterchool allstars and
- 4:37their work to provide free comprehensive

- 4:40low-income students and families across
- 4:43the US. All the donations go to a great
- 4:45cause. Plus, you have a chance to win
- 4:47some amazing things. I just had to bring
- 4:49this to you. It's completely
- 4:51mind-boggling. So again, go down there,
- 4:53link in the description,
- 4:54omaze.com/vyscript.
- 4:56Good luck to you. Now, let's get back to
- 4:58this old Packard. I'm excited to see if
- 5:00this thing will run or do something at
- 5:03least. Well, so far the old girl seems
- 5:06to roll really easy. And Jessica said it
- 5:09felt like there was even brakes or at
- 5:10least the pedal didn't go to the floor.
- 5:12So, that is really neat. Now, the
- 5:16old-timer I bought this from, really
- 5:18nice guy. He thought it had a 327 in it,
- 5:22but I'm pretty positive this is a
- 5:24Packard 200 model, so it would have the
- 5:26288, but we could take a closer look.
- 5:29There should be a casting on the head
- 5:31there, and then there should be a body
- 5:32number. Hopefully, that plate still on
- 5:34the car. And there's some other things
- 5:36like the grill doesn't have the teeth in
- 5:38it. It's got the single strip of chrome
- 5:41down the fenders there. Those are all
- 5:44reminiscent of the 200 model instead of
- 5:46the 300. It's definitely not the 250 or
- 5:50there was a few other ones, but it's a
- 5:52really neat car overall. And if you
- 5:55owned a Packard back in the 50s or even
- 5:57before, it was a prestigious thing. They
- 6:00were considered a very nice luxury car,
- 6:03but still affordable. So, they were
- 6:05right up there with Cadillac. I mean,
- 6:08all the luxuries and things. You could
- 6:10get a ton of options with this car, too.
- 6:13In fact, I could probably read you off
- 6:15some that were pretty neat. Found some
- 6:17of this in the Auto History Preservation
- 6:20Society. You should Google Webbit if you
- 6:22got an old rig. Genuine leather
- 6:24upholstery. You can upgrade that for 153
- 6:27bucks. Heater and defroster. Signal
- 6:29seeking radio with a rear speaker.
- 6:32Fellers way in the back. Windshield
- 6:35washer. Eommatic power brakes here
- 6:38fellas and fells. 39 bucks. Spotlights.
- 6:42Fog lamps, wood grain tissue dispenser.
- 6:44I mean, come on. They don't even have
- 6:45that today. Vanity mirrors, road lamps,
- 6:48vent shades, chrome exhaust deflector,
- 6:51curb feelers right from the factory,
- 6:53filler. Gas door guard, locking gas
- 6:56door, door edges, spare tire valve
- 6:58extension, fuse kit, trouble lights,
- 7:00under hood lamps, wheel blocks, white
- 7:02wall tires. There's so much stuff here.
- 7:05Packard was, like I say, a pretty darn
- 7:08luxurious rig. Now, they only made
- 7:126,987
- 7:16if this is a Packer 200, which we'll
- 7:18find out here in a minute. Original
- 7:20sticker price, $2,494.
- 7:24Isn't that something? As far as
- 7:26production goes, it's looking like it
- 7:30was probably one of the most produced
- 7:32vehicles because it was kind of the
- 7:34entry level from the Packard because
- 7:36then you had the deluxe, the 250, the
- 7:38300, and then the 400, the big dog. You
- 7:41know what I mean? But anyh who, and how
- 7:44way, let's hook our peepers into this
- 7:46thing. Walk around a little bit. See
- 7:48what we got going on. I think I got this
- 7:50missing piece of chrome here. You know,
- 7:53at first glance, and I'll get you guys
- 7:55in closer here, we've got some pretty
- 7:58severe foamage. That's approved. Peeking
- 8:01in, I can see some license plates.
- 8:03Didn't see that before. Interior is
- 8:08well,
- 8:09it's there. I mean, the bottom of the
- 8:11seat looks nice,
- 8:14but it is pretty rusted out. Let's go
- 8:17straight for the model. Get that out of
- 8:19the way here. Ooh, need some WD on that
- 8:22door. So, we got a plate here. Look at
- 8:25this. Packard Motorcar Company, Detroit,
- 8:28Michigan. So, 255. I'm positive that's a
- 8:33200 body. So, for sure, we've got a 200.
- 8:35Trim code 44. Paint scheme M.
- 8:40There's a little glance at the Boy, that
- 8:42is a thick smell. We'll shut that for
- 8:44now. Get around the exterior. Isn't this
- 8:47neat how the handle follows the trim
- 8:50here instead of the traditional handle
- 8:52here? And it works really well. But this
- 8:55is a foam inch I was talking about. I
- 8:58mean, I approve. They even angled it,
- 9:01cut it, everything.
- 9:04Fender skirts are missing. Could have
- 9:06been an option, but it looks like
- 9:10Well, maybe not. I don't Maybe this one
- 9:12didn't have it. More foamage.
- 9:16I wonder if the gas tank's still in it.
- 9:17Oh, yeah. Look at that. Not the locking
- 9:20option. See, we're learning stuff here,
- 9:22fellas. Stainless looks to be in really
- 9:26good condition. Normally, this is just
- 9:28gets the hail damages and stuff like
- 9:30that. You can see they got some pitting
- 9:32here, but that's no big deal. But the
- 9:34rest of this is just beautiful. Look at
- 9:36that. All the way around.
- 9:40Front windshield.
- 9:42It's all there. Again, no dents,
- 9:45nothing. All this stuff here, I had a
- 9:49devil of a time getting this up in the
- 9:51tree row. That's actually from mud spray
- 9:55from my pickup. It was on a trailer and
- 9:57we were getting stuck and we just had to
- 10:00four high it and put the hammer down to
- 10:02get back there. And then the 200C,
- 10:06they have this grill and I think the
- 10:08other ones have like they call them
- 10:09teeth or tooth grills. Toothacuses. They
- 10:12got more teeth. It doesn't have the
- 10:14denture look. That's what I'm saying.
- 10:16There's some other stuff in here. And
- 10:18then they had some different hood
- 10:19ornaments. They had the single and the
- 10:21pelican stuff like that. No dents on the
- 10:25hood.
- 10:27Bumper needs recchromeed. This is what
- 10:30that piece looks like on the other side.
- 10:32We need poverty caps are missing. Go
- 10:34figure. Maybe they're in the trunk. We
- 10:36got to go look there yet. And we got
- 10:38some truck tires. Conquerors
- 10:42A forward slasht
- 10:45Nankang.
- 10:48So those seem good. More advanced
- 10:50foamage over here. You can see
- 10:55a little bit back there as well.
- 10:58But I mean otherwise,
- 11:01you know, it's pretty good. Do have a
- 11:03little dent over here. Darn it. We got
- 11:05an exhaust tip later in there. Oh, she
- 11:08got crunched up. rear speaker option
- 11:10maybe. Not sure. We'll have to wait and
- 11:13see. Nice little tail lights. Look at
- 11:15that.
- 11:1740s and 50s cars. I tell you what,
- 11:20fellas, my favorite eras. They just ooze
- 11:24style and character. And look at all the
- 11:26curves and the shapes. And you could
- 11:28just tell that every car went through
- 11:30just strenuous design. And it just they
- 11:34look so much better. Plus, you know,
- 11:38we're talking real steel bumper to
- 11:40bumper. This is a 3700lb
- 11:43car, and it's a twodoor coupe. So, think
- 11:46about that for a minute.
- 11:50Roof's not caved in. I'm just really
- 11:53jazzed up about the glass here, fellas.
- 11:55No bullet holes. Nothing's kicked out.
- 11:58Of course, this is from age, but this
- 12:00really ain't that bad. Quarter glasses
- 12:02are perfect.
- 12:04Back one looks to be perfect condition
- 12:07as well. That's a huge score right
- 12:10there. Well, let's get in the trunk
- 12:11here. See what we got going on.
- 12:13Hopefully there's not head gaskets or
- 12:16body parts.
- 12:18Talking cars here, fellers. Settle down.
- 12:21What do we got here? Toothpaste? No.
- 12:23Paper towel edge. That's a good digital
- 12:27connection right there. Front pocket
- 12:28find. Listen, the reason I started the
- 12:30trunk, fellas, and I've been doing this,
- 12:35I've been doing this a long time. No,
- 12:37that's hurting the back. Okay. It'll
- 12:40tell you everything you need to know
- 12:42about this rig. Usually, there's
- 12:45recepts. Some call them receipts. I
- 12:47think it's French. Something about money
- 12:49spent. Anyway, history. Okay. Also, any
- 12:53parts changed, missing, conglomerations,
- 12:57whatever, they're all back here. People
- 12:59sell rigs, eh, throw it in the trunk. Or
- 13:02if it's a pickup, of course, the box.
- 13:04So, let's get in here. Let's get Let's
- 13:06get inside of this thing. Okay, open.
- 13:11Clap on.
- 13:13Oh, need a key. One second. Tell you
- 13:17what, I definitely could have drank a
- 13:19beer with this guy. Plus, I think his
- 13:21name was Bubba. We're basically best
- 13:23friends.
- 13:26Oh, we got a lot of stuff. Does this
- 13:28stay? Nope. Got to get a proper later.
- 13:32Oh, man. Woo.
- 13:35All right.
- 13:37Okay. Well, let me get a properator and
- 13:40then I'll get you I'll get you guys in
- 13:43there. What we got here, fellas, is
- 13:46classic junk trunk, but this is only
- 13:48stage two of 14. It's not that bad,
- 13:51actually. We got some blanket ditch. Oh,
- 13:54goodness gracious. What do we got here?
- 13:58Oh, I know exactly what that is. This is
- 14:02the knife used to expertly cut the
- 14:05foamage. And I can use that as a steak
- 14:08knife. Actually, we'll just run that
- 14:09through the cheap poker, clean it up a
- 14:12little bit, and we'll run that right
- 14:13back into the house. Got some blankets.
- 14:16Looks like maybe.
- 14:18Okay. Sure. Guy could always use
- 14:21blankets.
- 14:23What else we got? We got a body panel.
- 14:261999. I wonder if this is when it was
- 14:29off the road.
- 14:31Tennessee. I bet that's that's got to be
- 14:34it. All right. Well, there's our answer
- 14:36there. 22 years. Sparklators. Brand new.
- 14:41Okay. Get them out. What else is this?
- 14:45What do we got? Is that a distributor
- 14:47gasket? I think it is.
- 14:49Okay, this is going good so far. Bunch
- 14:52of newspaper. I'm not going to read the
- 14:55news cuz it's probably a little old, you
- 14:58know. Got some aluminum foil.
- 15:02Got to keep that. That's good stuff.
- 15:05Okay, what else we got? Putty knife.
- 15:08This is This was a good investment. I
- 15:10ain't kidding you. No way. Jigsaw
- 15:14blades. Brand new. I can't believe it.
- 15:19Well, I got two. I'm looking at them. I
- 15:22think that's trash.
- 15:25What do we got in here? I'm kind of
- 15:27excited now. Dakota Digital. No, can't
- 15:30be.
- 15:32No. Okay, they're gone. I was going to
- 15:34say I would have got all my money back.
- 15:37All of it. Oo, got a socket. 3/ quarter.
- 15:42Boy, this is some good finds back here.
- 15:44I ain't kidding you. I think the fella
- 15:46was making a trash run. See here, he
- 15:49just never made her to the trash. Oh,
- 15:51this has been expertly patched.
- 15:55This guy knows what's going on. So, you
- 15:57lay screen first. Did you guys watch the
- 15:59Al Camino video? Screen first, then
- 16:03foamage, cuz this will hold your foam
- 16:05and shape it up for you. So, he must
- 16:08have just ran out of foam. See, these
- 16:10are the what he cut off. So, we got some
- 16:14good finds.
- 16:17But I think for now, we'll just, you
- 16:20know, let's bring that down
- 16:24like that. Pretend it's not in there. I
- 16:27just can't believe we got new spark
- 16:30lighters. This is $25 right here. Oh,
- 16:33yeah. Brand ant. Oh, wait. Don't. These
- 16:38been pulled out, fellas. Well, maybe
- 16:40there's some new ones.
- 16:42There's some new ones in it maybe. But
- 16:45these didn't look I mean she's running
- 16:47richer than Bill Gates, but little bit
- 16:50of sandpaper and on the cheek poker.
- 16:53Just jam them back in. I guess let's
- 16:55open the hood. See what we got going on
- 16:58under there. And we can also see if it's
- 17:00a 288 or a 327. Should be a 288 unless
- 17:04it was swapped on, which, you know, that
- 17:07does and could happen. So, we just don't
- 17:10know. Been
- 17:19a while since I popped a packard open. I
- 17:21think there's a lever. It's like a stick
- 17:23hanging out. Here it is. You pull
- 17:27push. There we go. You know, I always
- 17:29used to see these in the junkyard
- 17:32when I was roaming around with my
- 17:34grandpa and my dad. They just the
- 17:37straight eights. They went with them for
- 17:39so long. And it was actually one of the
- 17:41reasons they kind of petered out and
- 17:43eventually died. Everybody else like
- 17:45Chevy was producing the V8s and they
- 17:47just got behind and parts and people to
- 17:50work on them and stuff like that just
- 17:52became expensive and you started seeing
- 17:53them in the junkyards a lot. I remember
- 17:56seeing these all the time in old yards
- 17:58and farm houses and homesteads and
- 18:00junkyards when I was a kid. Oh yeah,
- 18:03boy. That thing is massive.
- 18:06It is definitely a 288, but that's still
- 18:09really cool. We got a battery in here.
- 18:11Oh, be dipped. Guys, been sitting here
- 18:14staring this thing down, and I got to
- 18:16tell you, not only does it look 103%
- 18:20complete, but there's some new partage
- 18:23in here. Fuel make it happener,
- 18:26generator,
- 18:28lightning, wher cap. There's some work
- 18:31that's been had. This thing might just
- 18:33fire right off. I don't know what what
- 18:36the issue is. Probably a bad clutch or
- 18:39rear end's out of it or something. No,
- 18:42it coasted. So, yeah, we're back to
- 18:44clutch. Definitely. Oh, that's great.
- 18:48There's so much going on in here. I just
- 18:52I don't know. I'm getting dizzy. I don't
- 18:54know where to start, I guess. Let's
- 18:56start here. We got a battery. That's I
- 18:59mean, that's really good. 6vt system.
- 19:03You could tell because of the way that
- 19:04it is and also because of the way that
- 19:08it is there. So that's pretty neat. Has
- 19:11not been converted to 12 volts, which is
- 19:14in my opinion great because what usually
- 19:17happens, see this old cloth wiring, this
- 19:19original wiring in here, it's throughout
- 19:22the entire car. And the resistance and
- 19:25impedance and amperage and voltages is
- 19:28made for 6 volts. But a lot of times
- 19:30what happens is fellers convert these to
- 19:3312 volts. They don't upgrade the wiring.
- 19:36Well, you're driving a smoking missile
- 19:39there, feller. I mean, all that wiring
- 19:41is just turning into licorice and
- 19:44glowing red. You're going to burn the
- 19:46rig down is what I'm is what I'm saying
- 19:49to you right now. Now, you could jump
- 19:51start these with 12 volts really quick.
- 19:53I wouldn't crank on it forever. You burn
- 19:54the starter out. But if you're going to
- 19:56go to 12 volts, make sure you put a
- 19:59whole wiring kit in it, like Painless
- 20:00Wiring or American Wire or whoever has
- 20:03the cheapest, you know, kit available at
- 20:06the time. Just something to consider.
- 20:08Plus, you blow it out all your bulbs and
- 20:11stuff like that. You got to change all
- 20:12your lights. Let's get right into this.
- 20:14This is really cool. See Packard and
- 20:17then Thunderbolt. Look at this big
- 20:20thing. It's so cool. It's literally like
- 20:23it looks like a Lego block sitting in
- 20:26here. Now, I do see some auto light
- 20:30sparks. So, those AC Delos were taken
- 20:33out. Someone put some auto lights in. We
- 20:35got a different lightning hose. We got a
- 20:38blue streak. That's an O'Reilly Auto
- 20:40Parts lightning can in here. We got a
- 20:44new generator sitting down here. Maybe
- 20:47even a new belt. Someone's been into the
- 20:50thermostat. We got some room temperature
- 20:52vulcanization cream in there. Oh,
- 20:55another new lightning hose. Look at
- 20:58this. There's a fuel make it happener in
- 21:00here. And that looks I mean
- 21:05looks pretty newish. This is Well,
- 21:09that's going to make a fire. So, maybe
- 21:11we'll leave that. Whoa. Okay, that
- 21:14fitting down there is loose. I'll have
- 21:17the fuel pump make it happen here. But
- 21:19boy, they jammed this thing in there.
- 21:21But anyway, getting back to this. I got
- 21:24sidetracked. 288. So, this is in fact a
- 21:27288 straight eight. Look at that. Way
- 21:32back there. We got a piston just doing
- 21:34the thing. Got the windshield washer jar
- 21:37still in here. Got the wiper motor.
- 21:41I mean, everything is basically in this
- 21:43rig. I think this is the original rad.
- 21:46It's just got a new capillator. These
- 21:49look like they've been hammered on.
- 21:51That's approved.
- 21:54Hopefully the starter is still hanging
- 21:56in there. That's been
- 22:00Craigslist rebuilt. Old oil bath
- 22:03breather. Maybe we can Oh, yeah. She's
- 22:05loose, too, even. Yeah, look at that.
- 22:08That's a Mopar
- 22:11fuel making happener. In fact, we just
- 22:13put one of those on a Dodge fellas. So,
- 22:16that is the same I could tell you right
- 22:18now because of this cheesy little thing.
- 22:20That is the same exact fuel make it
- 22:23happener I got off of Evil Bay. Those
- 22:26are about 50 bucks shipped. It actually
- 22:28worked. So, we might have a shot of that
- 22:31working.
- 22:33That's all plugged in.
- 22:36Pretty darn neat. The guy back there,
- 22:39no, not you. said, "This guy back in the
- 22:42recliner said, "Derek, tell us a little
- 22:44bit more about this engine looks pretty
- 22:46neat, so I will." They only had a 2 and
- 22:491/2 in bore fellers, which is that's a
- 22:52really small piston if you think about
- 22:53it. And that's how they jammed so many
- 22:55in that straight line there, but they
- 22:57did have a 3 and 3/4 in stroke. So, they
- 23:00ended up making about 135 horsepower,
- 23:02which was quite a bit for this era. And
- 23:05get this, 230 foot-p pounds of torque at
- 23:09only 2,000 RPM. So, this thing was a
- 23:13torque monster back in the day. Now, the
- 23:15Ajamagic, this is the Manuel, of course,
- 23:19they had slightly higher compression at
- 23:207.5 to1. This is going to be a 7 flat to
- 23:24one compression ratio. So, it'll burn
- 23:27anything you throw on that pretty much.
- 23:30And again, they used these straight
- 23:32eights for years and years and years and
- 23:34years, and they were proven to be
- 23:36extremely reliable. And when you think
- 23:39about it, they were fast. In fact, they
- 23:41did a lot of racing with these straight
- 23:43eights. I listen, believe you me. No.
- 23:47Yeah.
- 23:49Kind of just been,
- 23:52you know, trying to pump myself up to
- 23:53get in here. When I cracked this thing
- 23:55open to get to that plate in there, it
- 23:58hit me. I couldn't even I can't even
- 24:02explain the smell that I had then. And I
- 24:04think what happened was there was a lot
- 24:06of moisture in here from when it got
- 24:08full of snow and then it's just been
- 24:10baking back there in the trees. Not the
- 24:13good bacon. Settle down there, Fred.
- 24:16Okay. Anyway, let's open this up and
- 24:20we'll get a tour in here.
- 24:23I got to be honest, I haven't been this
- 24:25nervous in a while.
- 24:29Oh yeah, I know exactly what that is.
- 24:34Yep. It's like a wet shop vac filter and
- 24:38old furniture. They do not mix well is
- 24:42what I'm saying. This seat is a going to
- 24:45town. Look at this door panel. What is
- 24:47happening right now? The back seat. No.
- 24:51Come on. Ooh, screwdriver. Flatb blade.
- 24:54Nice. No. Allen key. This thing is a
- 24:57gold mine. I got to get to the toolbox.
- 25:00Shop Lion's in here already checking it
- 25:02out.
- 25:04One of the reasons I call him motor, you
- 25:06always got to sit in the driver's seat
- 25:07or the hood and he's always got his
- 25:09little motor running. Anyway, look at
- 25:12this interior, guys. This might be I was
- 25:15told. Now, listen. I was told this is a
- 25:1775,000 mi car. This is water damage,
- 25:22not age. So clearly the weather
- 25:25stripping has an issue, but what a
- 25:28beautiful interior. And the seats really
- 25:31aren't that bad. I mean, little bit. I
- 25:33mean, it needs work there, but
- 25:37look at this.
- 25:40You would think this would just be
- 25:41completely shot if it was super high
- 25:43miles. This is from sun clearly,
- 25:47but that's too bad. The other side
- 25:49didn't get it, so it must have been
- 25:51parked this way. You find any mice? Huh?
- 25:55He's working on it. We got license
- 25:57plate. That is completely approved. Look
- 26:01at this. Oh, and some duct tape in
- 26:04there. We got to seal it off,
- 26:07man.
- 26:09Got some ankle ventage for the rear
- 26:12passengers. Also over there, we can fix
- 26:15that with a few more plates. But look
- 26:17how nice this interior is.
- 26:21Nice looking gauges.
- 26:24Got that radio.
- 26:27Just simple but elegant. Got a heater in
- 26:29here.
- 26:31And there we got the 75,451.5
- 26:35miles.
- 26:37Nice looking clock
- 26:39thingy. Must not work. Someone got her
- 26:41up at high noon there. Rearview mirror
- 26:45looks to be in really good shape.
- 26:47headliner. Unfortunately, she's got some
- 26:49sag in her. You know what I mean?
- 26:52There's a few things that don't lie,
- 26:54fellas. Kids, yoga pants, and
- 26:58headliners. This one's a little bit
- 27:01saggy. You know what I mean? Got some
- 27:04openings back there in the trunk. I'm
- 27:05not sure if that was the rear speaker
- 27:07option or not. There's nothing there
- 27:08currently. I'm going to say probably
- 27:10not. Armrest missing there. We got
- 27:14armrestage.
- 27:16Both sides back here. No. Do you think
- 27:19this actually rolls down? Nope. Well, we
- 27:23got some rollage upage. Maybe the other
- 27:26side works.
- 27:28Oh, look at that. Just like butter.
- 27:32It's always risky. You just don't know
- 27:34if they're going to go back up. That
- 27:36does. We got keyage.
- 27:40Nope. Not even close to the right keys.
- 27:46Great.
- 27:47Whoops. Wrong set. That looks like
- 27:51almost looks like a Mopar key. Not quite
- 27:54sure what's going on there.
- 27:56Blinker sticks seem like they want to
- 27:58blink. What would this be? Not sure.
- 28:02Headlights.
- 28:05Pedals don't look super worn. Got
- 28:08somewhere. But you know what? all be
- 28:12dipped if I couldn't agree that this is
- 28:15probably a 75,000 mi car. Got some more
- 28:19platedage over there on the floor. I
- 28:22mean, basically someone already fixed it
- 28:24for me. That or I already worked on this
- 28:27car and I just forgot. The wheel color
- 28:30is horrendous though. That's got to go
- 28:32or we got to get some poverty caps on
- 28:34this thing. Stat. Guy almost just jumped
- 28:37into twisting on the ignition stick in
- 28:39there, but well, I ain't got that to
- 28:41turn yet. So, meanwhilst, let's get this
- 28:45thing way up in our teeth. Might as well
- 28:48take a look underneath of it. Normally,
- 28:50when I do these, they're laying up in
- 28:51the grass and a guy can't quite see
- 28:53what's going on, but we got an
- 28:55opportunity right now to get this thing
- 28:57up on the lift. And I'm just curious. Is
- 29:00the frame rotten? I don't know, I guess.
- 29:04Does it have a drive shaft? Never
- 29:06looked. Never looked. Foamage. I think
- 29:09what we're going to do, fellas, we'll
- 29:11just start in the rear and work our way
- 29:13all the way forward. I wish there was
- 29:15smell vision. You know what I mean?
- 29:17Really get you in here with the guy. But
- 29:20I can tell you this right now. This is
- 29:22the heaviest
- 29:24like industrial gear oil
- 29:29like just grease smell I've had in a
- 29:33while. I mean, it's up in the sniffer.
- 29:35I'm going to tell you that. And I think
- 29:37a big part of that reason is we've got
- 29:39some leakage
- 29:41basically bumper to bumper, but we'll
- 29:43cover that. Let's start back here and
- 29:45work our way forward. Pretty neat design
- 29:47right here. I wanted to point out, you
- 29:49know, ignore this. That's fine. But this
- 29:51here, this shackle design, you got to
- 29:54think that Chevy and Ford pretty much
- 29:57had everything sewn up. So, you got to
- 29:59get pretty creative with how you build
- 30:01stuff.
- 30:02That's really neat how they did that
- 30:04there. The fuel tank. Look at this
- 30:06fellas. We got some new rubber line in
- 30:10here. Hose clampers. So, I'm wondering
- 30:13if Well, that's empty. But I'm wondering
- 30:17if this was drained and flushed. If in
- 30:20not we got a little drainage there. So,
- 30:24that's pretty cool. Shocks. This
- 30:26spiralbound stuff here, that's kind of
- 30:2970s, which would make sense. If this is
- 30:31a 52, you drive it 20 years, you throw
- 30:34shocks on it, and there it sits. So,
- 30:36these definitely aren't original, but I
- 30:39mean, they're shot, I'm sure, completely
- 30:42at this point. Rear end is leaking
- 30:46significantly. That's going to be a
- 30:48pinion seal up here. Are we going to
- 30:50find one? Nope. Probably not. We'll just
- 30:54completely ignore this and just let it
- 30:57drip on the floor or wherever we park
- 31:00the unit. Now, one big thing that I want
- 31:03to show you guys really quick. It's
- 31:05pretty neat. Look at this frame.
- 31:08Okay, are you looking at it?
- 31:11Look at the shape of this frame. Packard
- 31:14borrowed this design from what
- 31:17manufacturer?
- 31:19Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep. I
- 31:22don't know if that's the way that that
- 31:24song goes, but look at this X-frame
- 31:26here. Drive shaft going through the
- 31:29frame. Exhaust going through the frame.
- 31:33Make your guess cuz I'm going to show
- 31:35you. If you said Buick fellers or fells,
- 31:39you were right. And I'll show you. Kind
- 31:41of hard to see cuz we got these planks
- 31:43in here, but you could see the X back
- 31:45there. That's a Buick frame design and
- 31:48the drive shaft. And this is a tube.
- 31:52There's actually not a drive shaft.
- 31:54There's a shaft inside of a tube that
- 31:55goes from the output all the way to the
- 31:58housing. But anyway, the frame has that
- 32:01same X pattern where the exhaust and the
- 32:03drive shaft goes through the actual
- 32:05frame. They're almost identical. She's
- 32:07been up on a jack one two three four
- 32:12five times minimum. Just that side. Six
- 32:167 eight over there. It's going to sound
- 32:18really horrible with an exhaust leak
- 32:21there. 79 ft long muffler. Maybe she'll
- 32:25kind of be quiet. This is really neat.
- 32:27Look at this fellas. We've got a cable
- 32:30operated overdrive unit on here. Now,
- 32:33this little beep boop box with a severed
- 32:36off wiring. I don't know. What am I
- 32:41looking at here? You Packard fellas put
- 32:44her down there in the bleep bloop box.
- 32:47What that is? So, we've got a Manuel
- 32:50with a overdrive. There's that big old
- 32:54straight eight. Thing is massive. Must
- 32:57have oil in it cuz she's leaking
- 32:59everywhere. So, that's good. Radiator's
- 33:02got a little leak. This is neat up front
- 33:06here instead of on the backard side on a
- 33:10corner or something like that. Oh,
- 33:14the suspension is just dialed right in.
- 33:19We'll ignore that. This one's about
- 33:22ready to do the same thing. Oh, that's
- 33:25okay.
- 33:27These tires, man. I don't know if
- 33:29they're going to hang in there or not,
- 33:32but we're going to find out.
- 33:34expert brake line running. See that?
- 33:39Yeah, that's that's a factory option.
- 33:42Holds more fluid that way. So, that's
- 33:45pretty much it underneath. It's just as
- 33:47worerer as on topper. So, that's good.
- 33:53What do we got for U-Jintage? Although
- 33:55seem pretty solid. Plenty of slap
- 33:57elsewhere though, so that's fine.
- 34:00Well, let's get this thing back on the
- 34:02ground. See if we can get it fired up.
- 34:06Throw on the digital meter here quick.
- 34:10What do we got? What's it saying?
- 34:1320. That can't be right.
- 34:18173.
- 34:20What in the devil is going on?
- 34:27Well, for Pete sake.
- 34:328.3
- 34:34volts.
- 34:36Wonder if that's an 8 volt battery. It
- 34:38must be.
- 34:40Well, I don't know. Says it's got juice,
- 34:43I guess. So, let's jump in this and
- 34:46twist on it and see what happens.
- 34:50Oh, yeah.
- 34:53First time I've sat in this thing. She's
- 34:55definitely a going to town rig. All
- 34:57right. Let's see if I can figure out
- 35:00this key. I don't know. Jiggle, jiggle,
- 35:02shake, twist, shake, shake, jiggle,
- 35:04twist, in, out, jiggle, shake, punch,
- 35:07twist, shake. That wasn't it. Well, help
- 35:09me understand this situation. Got a free
- 35:13rag up here. Well, I just don't know.
- 35:16Okay,
- 35:18it turned. I had battery lights and oil
- 35:22lights.
- 35:26Nothing.
- 35:27You know, it's pretty common. Oh, here
- 35:29we go.
- 35:33Okay, we got a push button. We got push
- 35:35buttonage right under here on the dash.
- 35:38I'm thinking that's
- 35:41Didn't we just have voltages? Oh, the
- 35:44key is out and the ignition is on. So,
- 35:46that's
- 35:47that's good. I'm thinking Oh, that's
- 35:51snigorrettes. Well, where is the Oh,
- 35:53this must be the overdrive. No, that's E
- 35:57breakage. I don't know. There's too many
- 35:59levers in here. But I don't think we got
- 36:01enough battery. So, here's the plan. If
- 36:03we had one, let's throw the battery
- 36:06charger up on the unit here. While
- 36:08that's boiling this thing out, let's go
- 36:10ahead and disco the fuel line and hook
- 36:14up a temporary rig so we can get some
- 36:16fresh fuel. I don't know what's in this
- 36:18tank. I don't know the last time it ran.
- 36:20I know nothing about it. So, let's make
- 36:22sure we shoot some fresh juice into the
- 36:25fuel make it happener if in or when a
- 36:27guy gets her cranking. Well, this rig is
- 36:30supposed to automagically detect what
- 36:33kind of battery we got in here. Oh, I
- 36:37think she's plum dead here. Oh, there we
- 36:40go. Engine start engaged. Okay, let's
- 36:45get this fuel stuff off the thing and
- 36:47the stuff. I wonder if Alabama's ever
- 36:50going to, you know, do anything again.
- 36:53That'd be that'd be something to see. I
- 36:57ain't kidding.
- 37:00Well, get off of here. I just never seen
- 37:05the likes. Well, that broke off now.
- 37:07That's great. Why is that?
- 37:14Oh, Lucy. I'll teach you how to do
- 37:17something. Like get off of there.
- 37:20Goodness gracious.
- 37:23This thing's loose now, I suppose. Why
- 37:25is it got an up swoop on it?
- 37:29No one knows. Wonder if we can side
- 37:32swoop it. Side swoop. Yeah, maybe
- 37:35that'll a better swoopage this way. I
- 37:37don't know. I don't design them. I just
- 37:40work on them, you know. Well, this rig's
- 37:42a whole lot better than the other one.
- 37:45Plus, this kind of snapped and I don't
- 37:47know, wasn't doing much. I got the wicks
- 37:503303
- 37:52on here. Of course, that's 38 line now,
- 37:55fellas. So, that's going to get about 17
- 37:56more horsepowers in here. Now, that does
- 38:01absolutely nothing. Disconnected the
- 38:05fuel line from the tank down at the pump
- 38:07and gas started just spurting out. So,
- 38:11it's got fuel in it and it didn't look
- 38:14that bad. There wasn't any chunks or
- 38:15anything like that, so I just hooked it
- 38:17back up. We're just going to have to try
- 38:19to bring her back around. Might have to
- 38:21dump just a little bit of sauce down the
- 38:23yap here. Get this thing spinning fast
- 38:26enough to pumpate some fuel in.
- 38:29But I'm kind of hoping based on
- 38:32everything else she might just take
- 38:33right off. So, this is what I was
- 38:35talking about earlier. There's the unit
- 38:37off that 318 rig.
- 38:40There's the chicken lain unit that I put
- 38:43on it. And it's absolutely identical
- 38:47other than this. You know, we got a bend
- 38:50here, not there. But same rig. Pretty
- 38:54interesting. You can throw a Mopar stuff
- 38:55on your Packard. I guess this thing's
- 38:57just been ripping away. I don't know
- 38:59that it realizes it's a 8 volt. It's
- 39:02probably confused, but it seems to be
- 39:04holding around 10. And I can hear a
- 39:06little bit of boiling. And I got that
- 39:08acid up in the nostrils. So, let's jump
- 39:11inside and see if that button works, I
- 39:14guess.
- 39:17Oh, yeah. Look at this. We got bat and
- 39:19oil lights.
- 39:22Okay.
- 39:24Right here. Oh, yeah. Oh, no. That was
- 39:29it.
- 39:33Okay, we got a bad battery. I think I
- 39:36dialed up O'Reilly's and they actually
- 39:38have a 6volt battery in stock, believe
- 39:40it or not. And I got like a whole pile
- 39:41of cords back here. So, I'm going to go
- 39:44trade one of these in. Grab one of those
- 39:46and we'll throw that in. No go handle on
- 39:48this unit, but
- 39:50then I got to thinking about her. I
- 39:52don't remember seeing a 6V with a go
- 39:55handle on her. I could be wrong though.
- 39:57Could be wrong. What in the world?
- 40:02Okay, this ought to give us a fighting
- 40:05chance. Get this thing spinning over
- 40:14hat.
- 40:18About the worst thing you can do is bang
- 40:21on the battery post. So, just bang on
- 40:24them to install them, basically. There
- 40:27we go.
- 40:28And then let's just see what this
- 40:30machine says to us. What do we got? What
- 40:34is it? How's it doing?
- 40:376.3 Vssep.
- 40:41I'm a computer boost mode. Why?
- 40:45It's doesn't need the boost. Think I'm
- 40:48just going to turn that off.
- 40:51All right, let's rec see if this button
- 40:54is the thing for the starter.
- 40:59Yep.
- 41:03All right.
- 41:05Now, we got to we got to relax a little
- 41:07bit here.
- 41:09We better check on the Earl. Make sure
- 41:12the bearings are floating in some sort
- 41:15of juice. I think I just saw a fuel
- 41:17spurt up. So, the fuel pump make it
- 41:19happener is happening. And maybe we
- 41:21should put a couple gallons of fresh
- 41:23fuel in this. Again, I don't know how
- 41:25long this has been sitting. For some
- 41:27reason, the rear window has rolled
- 41:29itself down.
- 41:31That's neat. And then we'll dump just a
- 41:34little bit of something down. Fuel make
- 41:35it happener. See if this thing will bark
- 41:37off and make some smoke or something.
- 41:41You know, I sure I'm glad this old giant
- 41:43ain't locked up like Alcatraz. That
- 41:45could have been a nightmare on Maple
- 41:47Street. See? Oh my goodness.
- 41:51That's some thin oil.
- 41:55Lots of gas in it. Lots and lots of gas
- 41:58in that. We probably should change on
- 42:01that. I definitely don't have a fill
- 42:02tray for this unit. Doubt anybody local
- 42:05is going to. But we could at least drain
- 42:08what's in there. Put some fresh juice in
- 42:11if we can get this thing to fire off
- 42:12first. I'm going to go mix up a
- 42:14concoction or find something. Put down
- 42:17the carburetor. Found a splash of this
- 42:1940 to1. Run my chainsaw on it, but also
- 42:23good for starting rigs.
- 42:25Whoa. Way too much. Perfect. Well,
- 42:30there's a little bit of fuel in the fuel
- 42:31field tray. So, if this fires off, it
- 42:34could stand a chance. Sit there and idle
- 42:36for us.
- 42:51I don't think it's getting any sparkles,
- 42:53gentlemen.
- 43:03Wonder if it's this
- 43:06ignition. It's not quite taunt. You know
- 43:08what I mean?
- 43:15[Music]
- 43:17Well, we're going to have to test on the
- 43:19sparkles. All right. I got my little
- 43:22light bulb thing hooked up in here. If
- 43:26it flashes, we got sparkle. What is that
- 43:28heat coming from?
- 43:31Ouch. Hot. That coil is on fire. We must
- 43:37not have a
- 43:40resistor in line here. That thing is
- 43:42legitimately
- 43:44oven hot. Burn is what I'm saying.
- 43:47Anyway, we'll ignore that. Got this wire
- 43:51hooked up to the starter. Should be able
- 43:53to just tap this on the battery and spin
- 43:56this thing over. Let me make sure the
- 43:57key is on still.
- 44:01Yep.
- 44:02Let's see if she's got spark out here.
- 44:06Yep. Oh,
- 44:08okay. Well, I guess it's got spark all
- 44:13of a sudden.
- 44:17Is it not even smoking?
- 44:21It's sitting here idling.
- 44:26I can't believe this. I guess I got to
- 44:29though. I'm looking right at it. This
- 44:32thing sounds good.
- 44:37I can't believe how quiet this thing is.
- 44:40Are you listening to it?
- 44:43Listen. Shh.
- 44:48Old flathead.
- 44:50Oh, we got a fuel leak. We got some fuel
- 44:52leakage.
- 44:54Okay, snug that up.
- 44:59Oh, it's going right on the exhaust.
- 45:01That's where you want fuel to land.
- 45:06How about now? What's it say?
- 45:11That gas doesn't look that bad from the
- 45:13tank.
- 45:18I think that might have right sized
- 45:20that.
- 45:23I can't believe this thing's sitting
- 45:25here just idling. I got to get some ice
- 45:27cube juice for this.
- 45:31Oh, check oil pressure.
- 45:47Well, you know, the light ain't on and I
- 45:50ain't hearing banging. So,
- 45:53oil pressure go down a cylinder.
- 45:57Ouch. That's a strong coil.
- 46:02I was going to switch it, but
- 46:08there we go. Ouch. That's a strong coil.
- 46:17Okay. Well,
- 46:19I guess I guess it's a runner.
- 46:24This thing's sitting here running like a
- 46:25solar machine.
- 46:40Can barely hear it running.
- 46:43What a neat old car.
- 46:46Fired right up.
- 46:50Yeah. Look at this fuel.
- 46:52It looks great.
- 46:57That might be a little close. Maybe we
- 46:59banned air over here a little bit.
- 47:06Huh.
- 47:09Scary part. Let's see if we've got a
- 47:11clutch.
- 47:17Well, it went into gear.
- 47:22I think we do.
- 47:25Wow. By golly.
- 47:28No.
- 47:31And all the gears.
- 47:38Horn don't work. Uh-oh. Going to have to
- 47:40sell it. Nope. Ain't for sale.
- 47:44Okay. I was just was just joking. Wow.
- 47:50This thing runs really good.
- 47:56That's incredible.
- 47:59Let's see if it restarts.
- 48:03Oh,
- 48:05this is a going to town rig if I've ever
- 48:07seen one.
- 48:18It runs. Little man, what do you think
- 48:20about this one?
- 48:22It looks cool. You know what? I agree
- 48:25with you. 106%.
- 48:27Wow. Clearly, we got to go just jam this
- 48:30thing on the road. Haven't pressed the
- 48:32brake pedal yet. We'll wait till, you
- 48:34know, we get on the highway down there.
- 48:37Here's what I'm thinking. I drove by
- 48:40this 76. Maybe it's a 77. I don't know.
- 48:44It's a late '7s Chrysler
- 48:47couple dozen times way down in Palaski.
- 48:50I don't know. I think it's 50 or 60 mi
- 48:52from me or something. But anyway, worth
- 48:55a shot. They're never home, it seems
- 48:57like. But it's getting to be after 5.
- 48:59Maybe we can catch them around supper or
- 49:01something. Let's toodel on by and maybe
- 49:04we can make a deal on this old thing. If
- 49:06I remember right, she's yeller,
- 49:08butterscotch flavored. Not sure. Going
- 49:10to load up some Hobo freight tools,
- 49:12couple odds and ends just in case, maybe
- 49:15even a fuel can. Slam the hood. Let's
- 49:19go. Well, I've already put down quite a
- 49:21few miles.
- 49:23Forgot my SGS. Can't see nothing. The
- 49:27dying animal sound is the speedometer.
- 49:30It's doing this on 110. Boy, she puts on
- 49:34some miles. Clock is stuck. Fuel gauge
- 49:37doesn't work. Temperature gauge doesn't
- 49:39work. Nothing works. Radio doesn't work.
- 49:44We don't need any of that. Also top
- 49:47speed is 42 by my chip system here.
- 49:52That's because the fuel making happener
- 49:54ain't happening. I got something
- 49:57something is a ride. You give her
- 49:59throttle
- 50:00falls on its face. So you have like one
- 50:0450 throttle
- 50:06and that's it. I got to try to stay
- 50:08above 40. I never thought I'd get a
- 50:11ticket for going too slow.
- 50:17The other thing is I got no lights. I
- 50:20only got about an hour of daylight. So,
- 50:23I don't think my return trip is going to
- 50:25go well is what I'm saying. But we're
- 50:30too far in it now, I guess. So, we're
- 50:32just going to keep on going.
- 50:35Captain's log 52 factor. I do have to
- 50:39say for three shocks,
- 50:41it does handle surprisingly well.
- 50:44does float. Not going to make it up this
- 50:47hill, am I?
- 50:49Good thing I kept the for sale sign on
- 50:51the back window. Who knows? Maybe I'll
- 50:54make a deal to get back home.
- 50:57Sme truck just passed me. We're doing uh
- 51:0126 m an hour. I've also ate about 17 lbs
- 51:05of miscellaneous debris. That is a nice
- 51:08looking valley down there, though.
- 51:11He's got a shed and
- 51:14jeez. Slow down. It can start over me a
- 51:19little bit. Oh, here we go. Here we go.
- 51:22We got a little bit of downhill.
- 51:26[Music]
- 51:33[Applause]
- 51:35[Music]
- 51:35[Applause]
- 51:37Yeah.
- 51:42Yeah.
- 51:44[Music]
- 52:12Oh
- 52:15[Music]
- 52:20yeah.
- 52:27Hey,
- 52:28[Music]
- 52:30[Applause]
- 52:35hey,
- 52:38hey.
- 52:43[Music]
- 52:56Where are you?
- 52:59[Music]
- 53:14Hey.
- 53:16[Music]
- 53:55This thing shifts so smooth. Stops
- 53:58really nice.
- 54:01It's a pretty darn solid car. I just got
- 54:03to figure out this carbon rider issue. I
- 54:06don't know if I'm ever going to find an
- 54:08original one. kind of been having this
- 54:10crazy thought about what if a guy were
- 54:13to put like a Holly Sniper on it or
- 54:15something. I know some of you just fell
- 54:17out of your chair. Listen, I get it.
- 54:19Okay, I get it. But nice easy starts,
- 54:22great fuel economy, a little bit more
- 54:24HPS out of her. I don't know. Kicking it
- 54:27around. You could bleep bloop it down
- 54:29below what you think about that. One of
- 54:31the things I really like about 40s and
- 54:3350s cars is you just feel so much more
- 54:36connected to the road. Like
- 54:39you feel the steering all the way down
- 54:41to the tires, the brakes, the way it
- 54:44handles. It kind of sways.
- 54:47I don't know. It's just
- 54:50It's just way better to me than new
- 54:52cars. It's hard to explain. I just like
- 54:55the feeling of 40s, 50s, even 30s cars.
- 55:02We're one mile to the road we need to
- 55:04turn on. The old Packard actually made
- 55:08it
- 55:10pretty impressive. I got to be honest.
- 55:12This old flathead runs really good minus
- 55:16the fuel making half issue.
- 55:19Doesn't get hot. The temp gauge actually
- 55:21did start coming off. It was just
- 55:23staying so cool.
- 55:27Neat old car.
- 55:29Pretty sure I just found this place.
- 55:33Trail is a little rough. Good thing we
- 55:36got truck tires on this thing from the
- 55:3780s. You know what I mean?
- 55:40Going to quick see if
- 55:43anyone's home. I messaged them and they
- 55:45said someone should might be here maybe
- 55:49is.
- 55:50So that would be nice. I've been trying
- 55:52to get together with this fell for quite
- 55:56some time over this. Oh my goodness.
- 55:58This thing is
- 56:00they need a little bit of gravel. You
- 56:02know what I mean? We're kind of just mud
- 56:05bogging right now. Hope we don't get
- 56:07stuck.
- 56:22See some old Chevys.
- 56:26Ooh,
- 56:29we got a ramp truck, fellas.
- 56:33F tree
- 56:47Cordoba. Well, there she is.
- 56:51What a rig.
- 56:54Look at this door.
- 57:00Might need some
- 57:02tires and wheels. Got to put that on the
- 57:05list, you know.
- 57:11Pretty solid, actually.
- 57:14Doesn't look like a ton of rust. This
- 57:16feels really weird looking at it first,
- 57:19to be honest.
- 57:21It's just different. Oof.
- 57:25Oof. Duh.
- 57:28That's too bad.
- 57:31Wonder what's
- 57:33under here.
- 57:39Oh, look at that. 400. Come on.
- 57:48Needs a radiator apparently.
- 57:52That ain't looking right.
- 58:01That's not a good sign.
- 58:05Oft, look at them seats.
- 58:08Got some boom booms in the back. 38
- 58:10thermostats. Lots of mold. Gage
- 58:15boy. I don't know. She's pretty rough.
- 58:17Guy's asking 1,500 for it. I don't know
- 58:20what I can get it for. shaggage.
- 58:23Well, I don't know, fellers. That one
- 58:25would be pretty tough revival. I mean,
- 58:28she's in rough shape, but you guys let
- 58:32me know what you think. Bleep bloop down
- 58:35there in the comments if I should try to
- 58:36pick that thing up. We toss some numbers
- 58:38around. It does have a title and keys,
- 58:41which is nice, but still a little bit
- 58:44more than I'd like to pay for it, but
- 58:45we'll see. You guys let me know. I got
- 58:47to hight tail it. I ain't got any lights
- 58:50on this rig, so I got to try to get back
- 58:53as quick as possible.
- 58:58Normally I ask you fellas what to do
- 59:00with these rigs, but I think I got this
- 59:02one under control. She's way too solid
- 59:04of a rig to just let sit in the trees. I
- 59:06wouldn't mind motoring this into town or
- 59:09bingo or tavern every now and then or
- 59:11something like that. But we got to
- 59:13figure out some shockators. Definitely
- 59:14some better tires. And then obviously
- 59:17that fuel system, the whole thing needs
- 59:19to be gone through or changed or
- 59:21something like that. If you've got some
- 59:22ideas, I guess you could throw those
- 59:23down below as well. Guys, don't forget
- 59:26to check out that incredible opportunity
- 59:28from Omaze. There's a link down there in
- 59:30the description for that. Thanks guys
- 59:32for watching. Appreciate it very much.
- 59:34We'll see you next time. Heat.
