- 0:03what's the likelihood Alberto contador
- 0:05used illegal drugs in winning his tour
- 0:08to France titles I I can't give you
- 0:11statistical likelihood but I know for
- 0:13sure that his coach is my pre previous
- 0:15drug
- 0:16dealer what does that tell
- 0:19you well I don't know maybe he found
- 0:23Jesus yeah you can figure it
- 0:26out what about Greg Lemont who won three
- 0:30tour to France titles most accomplished
- 0:33American cyclist other than Lance he's
- 0:35well I know he's really outspoken
- 0:37about uh about Lance and about drugs and
- 0:40things like that I don't until very
- 0:42recently I've not really gotten to know
- 0:44him well and even now I don't know him
- 0:46real well but I I've gotten to know him
- 0:48um I know he's opinionated I I wasn't
- 0:51there um but I know the drug culture and
- 0:53cycling predates him by some time and so
- 0:57if he's this is what I was trying to say
- 0:58if he's the one guy that had that
- 1:00ability then more power to him I mean he
- 1:03certainly he certainly must have been
- 1:05exposed to it when he was there and if
- 1:07he didn't do it and he still won
- 1:09then yeah it's impressive uh what's the
- 1:12likelihood the cyclist could win the
- 1:13Tour to France now without using illegal
- 1:18drugs or then I I don't well I don't
- 1:22know what the likelihood of anyone ever
- 1:24be a being able to do it is even then
- 1:27but I do know no one did it I mean I was
- 1:29there I know how many people have been
- 1:32caught and admitted to it in the last 25
- 1:34years so it hasn't
- 1:35happened um but that's not to say there
- 1:37aren't there aren't prodigies and and
- 1:40people have that have strange you know
- 1:42abilities in life they come from
- 1:43everywhere right they
- 1:45can play the piano when they're two or
- 1:48some crazy thing somebody somebody might
- 1:50be able to do it all I know for sure is
- 1:51no one has in a long time
- 1:57and I I just I foresee it when you were
- 2:02racing what percentage of the pelaton
- 2:04was using illegal performance-enhancing
- 2:07drugs oh I can't know for sure um I
- 2:11probably shouldn't guess
- 2:13but enough that if you weren't doing it
- 2:16and you didn't know about it I don't
- 2:17know where you came from because you
- 2:19must not be paying attention what about
- 2:21among the elite cyclists and the
- 2:24pelaton enough that it I'd never feel
- 2:27like I cheated Somebody by winning by
- 2:29doing it
- 2:30how do you change it how do you make it
- 2:33right how do you make it fair how do you
- 2:36make it you know genuine so you know
- 2:40it's not finding out from somebody who
- 2:44finally decides to speak it's people
- 2:46know when they're watching it what
- 2:49they're seeing is really what they're
- 2:50seeing in the playing fields what they
- 2:53expect the playing field to be life's
- 2:56not fair man I mean there's that like
- 2:59not fair telling a kid there's no Santa
- 3:01Claus no look fair is when everybody
- 3:04finishes together and gets a big hug
- 3:05right right but I mean somebody wins
- 3:07here right but I mean you're you know
- 3:10you're talking about you know what's
- 3:13wrong with the system the testing system
- 3:17what changes can be made to correct the
- 3:20problem I'll tell you where I would
- 3:21start I I don't know how you I don't
- 3:24know how you stop athletes from using
- 3:26performance enhancing drugs or breaking
- 3:28any other rule but I tell you what can
- 3:30do you can have the body that the the
- 3:32agency that enforces the rules apply the
- 3:35rules to everybody exactly the same way
- 3:36and until you do that nobody's going to
- 3:39respect the rules because if you start
- 3:41giving free passes to some people and
- 3:42not others and they find out about it
- 3:44you don't have any authority to enforce
- 3:46rules at all and then there aren't any
- 3:47rules so since you made the rules you
- 3:49got to enforce them across the board and
- 3:51it's it can never be perfect right there
- 3:53can be all sorts of unforeseen
- 3:56circumstances but if you clearly
- 3:59prejudice some people and give other
- 4:01people the benefit of the doubt then
- 4:04then there are no rules and until that
- 4:07happens never going to get fixed the
- 4:10likelihood any of this happens in your
- 4:12opinion it's not getting fixed
- 4:14never and it's nothing an
- 4:17investigation whether one going on now
- 4:20or future investigation could
- 4:23potentially change what that can change
- 4:25and the purpose it does serve is that
- 4:26people can now know what they're seeing
- 4:28they'll know they can still like cycling
- 4:30they can still watch it for the
- 4:31beautiful scenery and the places they
- 4:32race and and the drama that goes along
- 4:34with it but what they need to understand
- 4:37that it's not limited to what they're
- 4:40just seeing the things that determine
- 4:41who wins are are so many and so vast
- 4:46that do you really want to think about
- 4:48all that or do you just want to watch it
- 4:49for what it is what you're seeing
- 4:51because that's good enough isn't it I
- 4:52mean people watch sports not to
- 4:53complicate their lives not to make
- 4:55them not to cause them even more reason
- 4:58to wonder why the world isn't fair they
- 5:02watch it because of the drama and and
- 5:05who cares why the guy won but it seems
- 5:07like you know whether you're a
- 5:08professional athlete or somebody in any
- 5:11profession if you get to a point where
- 5:14you've worked your whole life to get to
- 5:17this point and it's clear that either
- 5:20you can find a new profession because
- 5:24you're going to be unable
- 5:26to have success unless you take a pill
- 5:31or you can take a pill and continue the
- 5:34pursuit of your dream and make money for
- 5:37your family and doing what you
- 5:39love you know that's quite the dilemma
- 5:42and I can certainly see me being in that
- 5:45situation saying well crap you know I've
- 5:48worked 20 years of my life to get to
- 5:50this point I'm going to take the pill
- 5:52right but there's one I would add one
- 5:54thing to that that you didn't mention
- 5:56I'm sure you meant it is that you know
- 5:58that the other guys are doing it I I
- 5:59think that if you put that scenario out
- 6:01there and say Here's a pill but no one
- 6:04else has it some people would probably
- 6:06feel guilty about it and not want to do
- 6:07it right but if you know everyone else
- 6:09is doing it some people will come back
- 6:11with the stupid if you know everyone
- 6:13jumped off a bridge then would you do it
- 6:14that's just the dumbest thing that
- 6:16doesn't make any sense this is not that
- 6:18this is here are the rules that we all
- 6:20know they're not the written rules but
- 6:22there's a set of rules In Our Little
- 6:24World these are the rules we play by
- 6:26right and the goal would be to not have
- 6:29have to
- 6:30put people in that position so they have
- 6:33to choose between morality and
- 6:35continuing the pursuit of their dreams
- 6:36it would be nice there could be a Level
- 6:39Playing Field absent the drugs or people
- 6:42doing things that could potentially harm
- 6:44themselves but it that's the governing
- 6:47body of cycling that that's up to well
- 6:51yeah we certainly have to start with
- 6:52them I mean when they're in on it then
- 6:55then there's no hope
