  1. 0:00Flight attendant, what's the wildest
  2. 0:01thing you've ever done that wasn't even
  3. 0:02close to your job description? There's
  4. 0:03an unspoken rule on every crew I've ever
  5. 0:05flown with. If Renata flags a passenger,
  6. 0:07you act. She's been doing this job for
  7. 0:0822 years, speaks five languages, and has
  8. 0:10this uncanny way of reading a person the
  9. 0:12second they board. We used to joke she
  10. 0:13could spot a wedding ring tan line from
  11. 0:14across the cabin. She once flagged a man
  12. 0:16as a federal marshal three rows in
  13. 0:17without ever looking at his shoes. So,
  14. 0:19when she pulled the four of us into the
  15. 0:20galley during boarding on flight 247
  16. 0:22from Houston to Atlanta and whispered,
  17. 0:24"Row 18, the man and the girl, something
  18. 0:26is very wrong." We knew to take her
  19. 0:27seriously. The man was in his late 40s,
  20. 0:29clean polo, polite to the gate agent, no
  21. 0:31obvious red flags. The girl looked about
  22. 0:3214, long dark hair, oversized hoodie
  23. 0:35pulled tight even though it was August.
  24. 0:36She hadn't said a single word during
  25. 0:38boarding. Renata had asked her in
  26. 0:39English then in Spanish if she wanted
  27. 0:40the window or the aisle. The girl just
  28. 0:42stared at her shoes. The man answered
  29. 0:43for her both times. "She's just shy,
  30. 0:45long day." He said it smiling. Renata
  31. 0:47smiled back then she came straight to
  32. 0:48us. Marisol, our newest attendant, was
  33. 0:50assigned that section. Renata told her
  34. 0:51to do a normal drink service with one
  35. 0:53small change. Ask the girl directly what
  36. 0:54she wanted, look her in the eye, and
  37. 0:56watch what happened. Marisol did it
  38. 0:57perfectly. "Sweetheart, what can I get
  39. 0:59you?" The girl flinched. Her eyes shot
  40. 1:00straight to the man. He answered, "Just
  41. 1:02water for both of us, thank you."
  42. 1:03Marisol nodded, smiled, and as she
  43. 1:05handed the cup over she slipped a folded
  44. 1:06napkin under the rim with one line
  45. 1:08written on the inside. "If you need
  46. 1:09help, tear this napkin in half." Then
  47. 1:10she walked away. We watched from the
  48. 1:12galley. The girl took her water, set it
  49. 1:13on her tray, didn't move. Renata's face
  50. 1:15didn't change but her jaw locked. Then
  51. 1:17about 20 minutes into the flight the man
  52. 1:18stood up to use the lavatory. The second
  53. 1:20the door closed behind him, the girl
  54. 1:21ripped that napkin clean in half and
  55. 1:22dropped both pieces into her cup. Renata
  56. 1:24moved immediately. She walked down the
  57. 1:26aisle like she was just collecting
  58. 1:27trash, picked up the cup, and said
  59. 1:28softly to the girl, "Honey, I need you
  60. 1:30to come with me to the back. We need to
  61. 1:31check your seatbelt assembly. It's
  62. 1:32flagging on our system. Just stand up
  63. 1:34and follow me." The girl stood. Renata
  64. 1:35walked her to the rear galley, sat her
  65. 1:37down on the jump seat, pulled the
  66. 1:38curtain, and signaled the cockpit
  67. 1:39through her handset. By the time the man
  68. 1:41came out of the lavatory, his seat
  69. 1:42partner was gone. He noticed within 30
  70. 1:44seconds. He started walking down the
  71. 1:45aisle fast. That's when Diego, our
  72. 1:47biggest crew member, stepped into his
  73. 1:48path with a calm smile and a hand on his
  74. 1:50shoulder. "Sir, we're going to need you
  75. 1:51to take your seat. We've moved the young
  76. 1:53lady because she said she was feeling
  77. 1:54unwell and we wanted to give her some
  78. 1:55space." The man's face changed. "She's
  79. 1:57my niece. I need to be with her. Diego
  80. 1:58smiled wider. Sir, please return to your
  81. 2:00seat or I'll have to involve the
  82. 2:01captain. He's already been notified that
  83. 2:03we have a passenger requiring
  84. 2:04assistance. What the man didn't know was
  85. 2:05that the captain had already been told
  86. 2:07everything. Atlanta ground had already
  87. 2:08been told everything. Two federal
  88. 2:09officers were already being routed to
  89. 2:11gate B14. The man sat back down because
  90. 2:13the alternative was being restrained
  91. 2:14mid-flight. In the rear galley, Renata
  92. 2:16had the girl tell her in Spanish what
  93. 2:18was actually happening. The girl was 15,
  94. 2:19not his niece. She'd been told her
  95. 2:21mother had been paid for her. She'd been
  96. 2:22told the police in this country would
  97. 2:23put her in jail if she ever spoke. She
  98. 2:25had no documents. She'd been driven
  99. 2:26across two state lines that week. Flight
  100. 2:28247 was supposed to be her second to
  101. 2:29last leg. When we landed, the captain
  102. 2:31came over the speaker and asked all
  103. 2:32passengers to remain seated for an
  104. 2:34unspecified ground crew matter. Two
  105. 2:36officers boarded. The man tried to stand
  106. 2:37up. Diego was already there. They walked
  107. 2:39him off the plane in handcuffs in front
  108. 2:40of the entire cabin. The girl is safe
  109. 2:42now. Her mother, who's alive, who was
  110. 2:43never paid, who had been searching for
  111. 2:45her for 9 months, was flown out to meet
  112. 2:46her 3 days later. Renata got a
  113. 2:48commendation she has never once
  114. 2:49mentioned to anyone. That napkin is in
  115. 2:51an FBI file.
