- 0:00Let's bring in our correspondent Katie
- 0:02Barfield who's in Middlesborough for us.
- 0:04And Katie, we now know the identities of
- 0:06the five in the car, the Volkswagen Pat.
- 0:12We do indeed. that update just within
- 0:14the last half hour from Cleveland police
- 0:16confirming the names and the ages of all
- 0:18of the five people who were in the
- 0:20Volkswagen Patat um at the time who lost
- 0:23their lives in this deadly crash as
- 0:24their pass uh careered head on into a
- 0:27police car that was being driven uh by
- 0:29PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Kloff uh
- 0:32who also died. We now know that all of
- 0:34the occupants of the Volkswagen Pass
- 0:36were male. They were all either
- 0:38teenagers uh or in their early 20s. I'll
- 0:41just run through the names of them
- 0:43again. Michael Robert Cahill was 23,
- 0:45Theo Ray who was 17, Cole Robert Worthy
- 0:48who was 16 years old, Jacob Matusiaak
- 0:51who was 23, and Mai Saddington who was
- 0:5418. Now, an incredibly sad day for the
- 0:57community around here. This is a very
- 0:58tight-knit community in this part of the
- 1:00Northeast. All day we've watched people
- 1:02coming to lay flowers and tributes uh
- 1:05both for the police officers who lost
- 1:07their lives and also for the people who
- 1:09died h in the Volkswagen pass out. Some
- 1:11of the balloons uh behind me here have
- 1:13been left for Michael who of course uh
- 1:15is one of the people Michael Cahill who
- 1:17lost his life in the pass out. Several
- 1:19notes have been written uh in memory of
- 1:21the people who lost their lives. We've
- 1:23also seen a couple of police officers in
- 1:25uniform coming to lay flowers and pay
- 1:27tribute to their colleagues. Now, the
- 1:29investigation here is still ongoing as
- 1:31well. There is still a large section of
- 1:33the A66 that's closed behind me at the
- 1:35moment while police continue their
- 1:37investigations. We've been watching over
- 1:39the past 24 hours. Police forensics
- 1:41teams coming in combing through uh the
- 1:44debris from that crash. We saw a car
- 1:45being moved on uh by recovery team
- 1:48yesterday uh evening. So, they will be
- 1:50continuing their work uh to piece
- 1:52together their investigation. There also
- 1:54is an investigation simultaneously
- 1:56ongoing uh by the independent office for
- 1:58police conduct. That's standard in any
- 2:01case where there are deaths where the
- 2:02police are involved. They will be
- 2:04wanting to look not just at the crash
- 2:06itself, but in the moments leading up to
- 2:07that and the decisions that were made.
- 2:10We understand that PC Blades and PC
- 2:11Kluff were not invol involved directly
- 2:14in the pursuit of the Volkswagen pass as
- 2:16it hit them while it was driving the
- 2:18wrong way down the A66, but that other
- 2:20teams of officers had been pursuing that
- 2:23car. So, the IOPC will be wanting to
- 2:25look at the decisions that were made,
- 2:27often split-second decisions, of course,
- 2:29in a high-speed pursuit like this. uh
- 2:31they'll be wanting to look at the
- 2:32communication uh between officers and
- 2:35possibly whether there was any
- 2:36communication uh with PC Blades and PC
- 2:39cloth as well. So the investigations uh
- 2:41are continuing here. What we don't know
- 2:43at the moment is the circumstances of
- 2:45the crash. Although we have been told
- 2:47the names uh and the ages of the
- 2:48occupants. haven't been given any
- 2:50details about the circumstances that led
- 2:53uh to this impact other than Cleveland
- 2:55police saying uh that family liaison
- 2:57officers are continuing to support the
- 2:58families of everybody who lost their
- 3:00lives.
- 3:01>> Katie, we had that emotional uh
- 3:03statement from the chief constipal of
- 3:04Cleveland police, Victoria Fuller,
- 3:06yesterday. Just give us the depth, the
- 3:08sense of emotion as well even today
- 3:10within the local community.
- 3:15>> Yeah, you could just hear it, couldn't
- 3:16you? in the chief constable Victoria
- 3:18Fuller's voice as she named the two
- 3:20police officers who had lost their lives
- 3:21yesterday visibly and audibly uh
- 3:24emotional as she named them. Uh she
- 3:26spoke about having visited their
- 3:28families personally uh to break the news
- 3:30to them which we can imagine must have
- 3:32been very difficult particularly as
- 3:34Cleveland police is quite a small force
- 3:36and quite a tight-knit community around
- 3:38here. I spoke also to the local police
- 3:40and crime commissioner Matt's story
- 3:41earlier and he was talking about that
- 3:43about how it is a small area. is a
- 3:45close-knit area. It's likely that many
- 3:47of the officers and also many of the
- 3:49other emergency services uh who worked
- 3:51here may have known each other. So, this
- 3:54will be a loss really felt hard uh in
- 3:56the cle Cleveland police community, but
- 3:58also in the wider community here. Plenty
- 4:00of people who've come down uh to lay
- 4:02flowers said this is the kind of
- 4:03community where everybody knows each
- 4:05other, everybody talks to each other. Uh
- 4:07so it will be very deeply felt.
