- 0:03all right we are here in San Francisco
- 0:05with an enormous statue of Christopher
- 0:07Columbus who as we all know discovered
- 0:09San Francisco in 1492 or his ships the
- 0:13Nina the San Jose and the Palo Alto to
- 0:16set the stage for a few hundred years
- 0:18later when thousands of other foreign
- 0:20information workers would come to
- 0:22Silicon Valley and begin making millions
- 0:25of dollars
- 0:26he was the first we're actually gonna go
- 0:28down to Silicon Valley and not speak
- 0:30with the creator of Facebook today and
- 0:31so let's get on that because I'm still
- 0:38not actually I'm gonna mention to be
- 0:42hard at work I'm here in Palo Alto
- 0:46California chillin with Mark Zuckerberg
- 0:48of the facebook.com for the uninitiated
- 0:51or those without any computer so let's
- 0:54you know simply what Facebook is like
- 0:56that's so I think Facebook is an online
- 1:01directory for colleges and then it's
- 1:04kind of interactive so if I look you up
- 1:06or get information about you I just go
- 1:08to the Facebook and type in your name
- 1:10and it brings me up like hopefully all
- 1:12the information I'd care to know about
- 1:14you or like a good amount of the
- 1:16information I'd want to know about you
- 1:17what is it that you think attracted
- 1:20it's a lot of different individual
- 1:22communities so I mean when we originally
- 1:24got started at Harvard it was just me
- 1:26programming what was a Facebook really
- 1:30at that time for Harvard because didn't
- 1:32have anything like that
- 1:33so I realized that because I didn't have
- 1:36people's information like a school would
- 1:38and making a Facebook I needed to make
- 1:40it interesting enough so that people
- 1:41would want to use the site and want to
- 1:43like put their information out there
- 1:44else it wouldn't be useful for other
- 1:46people and therefore would grow so
- 1:48launched at Harvard and early February
- 1:50of 2004 and within a couple of weeks
- 1:53two-thirds of the school and signed up
- 1:54so at that point my roommates were kind
- 1:57of like you know this is pretty cool
- 1:58like I thought this would work at other
- 1:59schools but I'm we were all busy with
- 2:01classes and stuff so we kind of just
- 2:04wanted to make sure that it was gonna
- 2:06work before going and like any further
- 2:08with it so we launched it add three
- 2:10schools that also had some sort of
- 2:12online communities so those were
- 2:14Columbia Yale and Stanford so um
- 2:16launched at those three and within a
- 2:19couple of weeks each of those three
- 2:20schools also like had thousands of users
- 2:23who are like alright this is pretty
- 2:24sweet like let's just go all out and see
- 2:26how many schools we can lock the Stata
- 2:27script as possible so we closed out the
- 2:29year with I think 29 schools came out to
- 2:32Palo Alto for the summer which hung out
- 2:34because Palo Alto has come this mythical
- 2:35place where you know all the startups
- 2:37come from got ready to launch and
- 2:39another hundred and fifty schools when
- 2:41the year started and now it's like we'll
- 2:43go to parties on campus like we end up
- 2:45this one's room like there's a Facebook
- 2:46window open that's pretty cool you know
- 2:48I mean work like one of my roommates was
- 2:50traveling around Europe a couple of
- 2:51weeks ago and he went to internet cafes
- 2:53and like
- 2:54Ireland in Italy then like when he went
- 2:57to Facebook just to check out whether it
- 3:00was like whether we're still working the
- 3:02way it was supposed to he'd go to like
- 3:05the login page and it would have like
- 3:06someone else's login they're saved from
- 3:08like the last time someone had been on
- 3:09it and I think like in London he was
- 3:12like two of the people in the internet
- 3:13cafe were on the Facebook at the time I
- 3:15mean nothing we were talking like it's
- 3:16sort of inspires like people to actually
- 3:19meet public yeah like it's not just an
- 3:22online
- 3:22have you noticed stuff like that yeah I
- 3:24mean I think that the goal that we went
- 3:26into it with wasn't to make an online
- 3:30community but sort of like a mirror for
- 3:32the real community that existed in real
- 3:33life
- 3:34so like the Facebook for your school
- 3:37isn't somewhere where people actually go
- 3:39to meet but like where do you go to see
- 3:41like who knows each other you know it
- 3:42may be like sort of an a groundbreaker
- 3:45or like icebreaker you know so that way
- 3:46you can find out something about people
- 3:49and see where you want to be or maybe
- 3:51like message them and it's just like a
- 3:54really informal way to like start a
- 3:56dialogue and where do you take a fist
- 3:58but at this point you can expand to
- 3:59those other schools that you're not
- 4:01I mean there doesn't necessarily have to
- 4:06be more you know I mean like a lot of
- 4:09people are focused on taking over the
- 4:11world they're doing like the biggest
- 4:12thing getting the most users I mean I
- 4:14think like part of making a difference
- 4:16in doing something cool is focusing
- 4:19intensely there was a level of service
- 4:21that we can provide we were just at
- 4:23Harvard that we can provide for all of
- 4:25the colleges and there's a level of
- 4:26service them to provide one where a
- 4:27college network so we wouldn't be able
- 4:29to provide if we went to other types of
- 4:30things so I mean like I really just want
- 4:33to see everyone focus on college and
- 4:34create like a really cool College
- 4:36directory product that just like it's
- 4:39very relevant for students and like has
- 4:41a lot of like information that people
- 4:44care about when they're in college so I
- 4:45don't know what that is and it's not
- 4:47everything that's on the Facebook now
