- 0:02hello all and welcome to
- 0:04today's webinar uh finishing the attack
- 0:06under the microscope
- 0:08my name is warren hackett i'm a national
- 0:09coach developer and i'd like to welcome
- 0:11my colleague today senior coach
- 0:13developer paul mcginnis hey doing paul
- 0:14you okay hi
- 0:15good to see you good
- 0:21okay so session aims today utilizing
- 0:23observational skills
- 0:25uh further interrogation using the
- 0:27quadrant tool recap on key factors
- 0:30observing connections between players on
- 0:33around and away from the ball so here's
- 0:36our
- 0:37england dna finishing the attack just
- 0:40the typical things you'd look for on
- 0:41here would be
- 0:42inbox crosses triangle wide crosses
- 0:45penetrative passes but also
- 0:47having the mind of the organization and
- 0:48security behind the ball
- 0:51so paul i'm just going to lead you into
- 0:53this diagram here now where you're going
- 0:54to obviously go into some real depth and
- 0:56detail around finishing the attack
- 0:58in the final third so over to you
- 1:01yeah i mean just in first look you think
- 1:04wow look how much stuff there is here
- 1:06um but that is you know there's so much
- 1:08going on in the final third so many
- 1:10different solutions to the problem of
- 1:12beating that block the defense and so
- 1:15we're going to have a look at it
- 1:16um bit by bit really we'll break it down
- 1:19make it less
- 1:20fussy um but i think you'll recognize a
- 1:23lot of the patterns and the movements
- 1:24that are in there
- 1:30and so yeah that's made a little bit
- 1:32clearer so if we just look at the two
- 1:34sort of
- 1:35rings around the bottom the blue rings
- 1:37i've put those in because
- 1:39a lot of the time you're playing around
- 1:41it might be the deepest one furthest
- 1:43towards the back with the defenders and
- 1:45then the midfield players might be
- 1:47um playing around in that ring around
- 1:50the box
- 1:50looking for the right pass looking for
- 1:52the penetrative pass um
- 1:54to set the move going that also doubles
- 1:56up as a security ring so you'll see
- 1:59now a lot of teams say man city have
- 2:01recently been putting their full backs
- 2:03into that ring as well
- 2:04to make sure that not only have they got
- 2:07a base from
- 2:08which to make the play and make the pass
- 2:10but if it breaks down they've got
- 2:11security behind the ball to win it back
- 2:13quickly
- 2:14and to stop any counter attacks and so
- 2:17that's the reason for those rings being
- 2:18in there
- 2:19and it might be they've changed play and
- 2:21got the ball wide
- 2:23and these these don't just happen wide
- 2:25but they will happen
- 2:26and predominantly in a wide position so
- 2:28you've got the normal underlap
- 2:30um where say a fullback might underlap
- 2:33a wide man that's there and you see
- 2:35within the quadrant
- 2:37um where the space is for the for the
- 2:39defender to make that run for the
- 2:41the attacking player uh another sort of
- 2:44common one here
- 2:45on the right there is the horizontal run
- 2:47so it might be a wide man who is just
- 2:49making a run a blind side run
- 2:51inside uh horizontal um
- 2:54behind the defender or of course the
- 2:56normal sort of traditional overlap where
- 2:58you
- 2:58you'd make a run commit the full back
- 3:00and then slide someone in
- 3:02to get the space on the outside and so
- 3:04those might be three
- 3:06types of runs that are going on yeah um
- 3:09and then sort of more in and around the
- 3:11box but these could also happen inside
- 3:13the box we've mainly concentrated on
- 3:15runs outside the box here
- 3:16um but again you see um where the
- 3:19quadrant is
- 3:20that's how we sort of um observing the
- 3:22defender's position
- 3:24and the um the forward in this case and
- 3:26then the pass
- 3:28would then go say for on the right hand
- 3:30side of the box there's a blind side run
- 3:32so you might get say someone like
- 3:33sterling playing for england or man city
- 3:35making that little blind side run as the
- 3:37defenders may be caught
- 3:39looking at the ball uh would be a common
- 3:41one and i think it does help when you
- 3:42see the
- 3:43the sort of shaded area that shows you
- 3:46where the pass
- 3:47um the receiver um sort of creates that
- 3:50that that space and creates a picture
- 3:53really for where the passer might play
- 3:54the pace uh
- 3:55play the pass um the next one along is
- 3:59just opening up whether the striker may
- 4:01open up their
- 4:02their position and open the space off to
- 4:04the right in this case
- 4:06and that gives a clear picture for the
- 4:08pass for the passer to make that
- 4:10uh pass away from the defender yeah
- 4:13essentially it might be dropping off
- 4:15into a space if the defender doesn't
- 4:17come it would be then maybe
- 4:19turning out to maybe open up so we're
- 4:20gonna get a shot or slide a pass in
- 4:23or if the defender does come it might
- 4:24create space for someone else to come
- 4:27and then you'll see on on the right
- 4:29maybe another common one is running
- 4:30across the face of the offender
- 4:32or actually pinning the defender and
- 4:34maybe getting the ball down the side and
- 4:36a moving screen so all different options
- 4:39that you know we all need to know about
- 4:41as coaches different pictures
- 4:43that might occur and in that sense on
- 4:46the on the left
- 4:47sort of deeper are the type of passage
- 4:49you might need
- 4:50so you'll need clever passes maybe um
- 4:53which might be disguise passes
- 4:55um where it looks like one type of pass
- 4:57and then maybe reversed
- 4:59a reverse pass a scoop pass a chipped
- 5:01creative pass
- 5:02over or through the defense and you
- 5:05might get on the right those sort of
- 5:06runs from deep not just runs on the edge
- 5:08of the box so
- 5:09maybe a a wide player making a running
- 5:11behind or or um
- 5:13or a deeper player midfield player or
- 5:15defender making a run into the box
- 5:18okay um and then of course if you you
- 5:21know
- 5:22the quickest way is a pass for a run to
- 5:23get through um but that might not be on
- 5:25with good defending blocking it then you
- 5:27might need combinations
- 5:29where you can't get directly through but
- 5:31you might need to combine so that
- 5:33you've got the one two which might get
- 5:35you through and that could be not just
- 5:37in this position but anywhere around the
- 5:38box you're looking for a one-two to get
- 5:40in behind the defense
- 5:41or to get a space available it might be
- 5:44even a third man run
- 5:45where you play off say um a point here
- 5:48or play between
- 5:49two players and get a third pass and so
- 5:52that's a case of whether
- 5:55the receiver is really looking for the
- 5:57second pass he's not looking for the
- 5:58first pass but he's looking for the pass
- 6:00that goes in off someone else and then
- 6:02they make that third man run
- 6:04so that's another another one that's on
- 6:06that that first
- 6:07slide you showed of combinations in
- 6:09around the box
- 6:10another way to get through and of course
- 6:13there's dribbles
- 6:14that could be anywhere around the edge
- 6:15of the box um
- 6:17looking to get wide and get a crossing
- 6:19to get inside the box get those cut
- 6:21backs
- 6:21or it might be to get a shot off around
- 6:23the box or it might be a dribble that
- 6:25leads to a combination maybe or
- 6:27or a little pass through for someone
- 6:29else
- 6:31um next one we've sort of covered
- 6:33through is a variety of crosses
- 6:35so on the right you've got a cross sort
- 6:37of inside the box
- 6:39what they call it the inside box cross
- 6:43across the six yard box uh alternatively
- 6:45it might be a cut back
- 6:46you might be having a near post cross or
- 6:49across to the far post
- 6:51if the if that's blocked the the area
- 6:53with someone in the near post space then
- 6:55quite often a pass behind that space in
- 6:58it it's a sort of the second six yard
- 7:00box can be a dangerous area
- 7:02um particularly liverpool really good at
- 7:04these alexander arnold
- 7:05you know if someone's filling that near
- 7:07post space he'll cut it back across
- 7:09the second six yard box um
- 7:12might be an early cross behind the
- 7:13defense or in swinging crosses or
- 7:15crosses from deep
- 7:16so you've got a variety of ways to
- 7:18penetrate around the box
- 7:20and we just thought that would be good
- 7:21to sort of break down and
- 7:23and give um an idea of those pictures
- 7:27uh and the runs that people might want
- 7:29to make
- 7:31okay and then you know the last bit
- 7:33obviously a lot of those
- 7:34would be within the box so that would be
- 7:36i'm calling it a predator movement with
- 7:38inside the box
- 7:39and and basically a library of finishes
- 7:42you think of something like harry kane
- 7:43he's got a finish for
- 7:44every situation and a lot of those
- 7:46movements would be there
- 7:47blind side runs um little cut backs all
- 7:50those little
- 7:51um movements um you run across the front
- 7:55of the defender
- 7:56opinion the defender all those would
- 7:58also be happening inside the box
- 8:00and and the last one there is power
- 8:02shooting from the edge it might be
- 8:03cleared
- 8:04or a little uh a little dribble and a
- 8:06shot to get a power shot
- 8:09um and they it all comes back in
- 8:11together there's obviously a lot
- 8:12but we'd be working at them in sessions
- 8:15um to get a variety
- 8:17of options that you know that you're
- 8:19trying to get so without this
- 8:21a picture of these in your head it's
- 8:23very hard to design your sessions
- 8:25if you've got these pictures in your
- 8:26head then you you're more likely to be
- 8:27able to design realistic sessions where
- 8:29they might come up
- 8:30i mean obviously a lot of this pulled um
- 8:32determined on the defenders as well
- 8:34i mean yeah we're looking at you know
- 8:36all the different attributes and
- 8:37different skills
- 8:38uh that you need in around the box to to
- 8:40finish and and to be able to create
- 8:42space
- 8:43but ultimately with the defense in place
- 8:45determines where you move how you should
- 8:47move
- 8:47and that type of stuff yeah exactly and
- 8:49of course then you're looking also
- 8:51what we talked about in that model we've
- 8:53used before is the context you know
- 8:55what's the defender's strengths um as
- 8:57opposed to the forward is it a quick
- 8:58forward he gets across the near post
- 9:00or is a tall forward he comes to the
- 9:01back post and maybe gets a header in
- 9:03what's the strengths of weaknesses is it
- 9:05someone who drops off and
- 9:07and creates you know little pockets
- 9:08behind them and can play passage through
- 9:11so uh yeah it's all strengths and
- 9:13weaknesses against her opponent yeah
- 9:15okay so when i look at what are the
- 9:19solutions
- 9:20to the game challenges we've been
- 9:21finishing the attack phase obviously
- 9:22we've gone through some
- 9:24so if you just want to talk around the
- 9:26observational skills paul did before
- 9:27during our yeah this is something now
- 9:29that
- 9:30you know the guys on the course guys and
- 9:31girls on the course will will know
- 9:33a lot about hopefully by now they've
- 9:35been taking the 11 aside game and
- 9:37zooming in putting it under the
- 9:38microscope looking before during after
- 9:41receiving
- 9:42and in that sense looking at you know
- 9:43where does the where's the space
- 9:45for the defender what do they need to
- 9:47control what's the
- 9:49attacker try to exploit and we're trying
- 9:51to get those clear pictures the pictures
- 9:52we've just seen you know is it a blind
- 9:54side run is it a run across is it
- 9:56someone dropping off
- 9:57and we're trying to you know look for
- 9:59the spaces that they're trying to
- 10:00exploit
- 10:02okay we're just queueing a video for us
- 10:04please sorry
- 10:23so paul do you want to just talk us
- 10:24through um through what you see really
- 10:26yeah well first of all it's it's really
- 10:29clever play defensive play by
- 10:31by sterling to read the read the action
- 10:33and intercept
- 10:34and then you're looking at what's the
- 10:35relationship between the pass and
- 10:37receiver can he get the ball here kane
- 10:39he can't get it because the defender is
- 10:41blocking it
- 10:41but he's blind side of the defender
- 10:43which means he can make a deceptive move
- 10:46to check out and get the cut back and
- 10:48that's the signal then to the passer
- 10:51and now that he gets a quality finish to
- 10:53really arrange his feet quickly in his
- 10:55body
- 10:56and watch here his body position his
- 10:58foot works great and then he arranges
- 11:00his body quickly
- 11:02and makes sure that he stays on the ball
- 11:04gets the body in the right position
- 11:05there to keep over the ball
- 11:07look how he stays on the ball and holds
- 11:10his position in his contact there
- 11:12rather than leaning back and getting
- 11:13underneath the ball he's really
- 11:15uh making sure again the footwork here
- 11:18and then making sure that he adjusts and
- 11:20in the deal with the goalkeeper he's so
- 11:22close that the goalkeeper got no chance
- 11:24if he keeps it down
- 11:25um so yeah terrific play really
- 11:29yeah i mean huge i mean the connection
- 11:30between the two is brilliant now as i
- 11:32said the defender's kind of stood in the
- 11:33space where you kind of think that
- 11:35sterling may receive it
- 11:36play it uh to the left-hand side of the
- 11:38defender and then between the two of
- 11:40them you know it's like telepathy isn't
- 11:41it they've seen it there's no space
- 11:42there
- 11:43keynes then obviously identified the
- 11:44space on the outside and like you said
- 11:46the finish was sublime
- 11:48yeah so if we just go on to
- 11:52go on to the detail pool that we've just
- 11:53spoke about just looking from a
- 11:55from a different lens so to pass through
- 11:57you know on the on the quadrant here if
- 11:59we look at it
- 11:59what paul was just mentioned as pastor
- 12:01receiver relationship
- 12:03sterling where he's driving into where
- 12:05the yellow obviously equals their
- 12:06defender
- 12:07then you're looking at the way harry
- 12:09kane shifts from one part of the trident
- 12:11into the red part of trident now
- 12:12because that's the space that's where
- 12:14the space has been created for him on
- 12:15the blind side of the defender
- 12:17and obviously you know the technical
- 12:18execution for the finish and the keepers
- 12:21right across the front post obviously
- 12:22anticipating across from sterling
- 12:24mccain's finish has just sort of been
- 12:26able to play into an empty goal but
- 12:28under duress and the duress pressure
- 12:30really from the way the ball is played
- 12:32to him the balls are sort of behind him
- 12:34um you know knee over the ball um
- 12:36shoulder head down to keep the ball down
- 12:39so uh you know it was a brilliant finish
- 12:41paul yeah and i think this is um
- 12:43a good slide for us to sort of say the
- 12:45process that we're going to go through
- 12:48throughout the whole um session here um
- 12:51is the fact that we're gonna look and
- 12:52highlight step by step
- 12:54um the password and receive a
- 12:56relationship you know maybe put that
- 12:57under the quadrant and
- 12:58look at all the key factors involved in
- 13:00that at the same time
- 13:02will be happening at the same time a lot
- 13:04of the time that what's the duel with
- 13:06the defender
- 13:06by getting away from the defender you're
- 13:09sending the passer
- 13:10um you know certain signals to where you
- 13:12want the ball
- 13:13um but in that case he was really
- 13:15deceptive by being blindside
- 13:17quickly moving his feet and then the
- 13:19next part of it it will break it down
- 13:21into
- 13:22what's the duel with the goalkeeper
- 13:24we've had that the deal with the
- 13:25opponent
- 13:26now the duel with the goalkeeper what's
- 13:27he looking for and then the real
- 13:30technical execution once he's made his
- 13:32decision on on the finish and so that's
- 13:34how we'll break down each of these clips
- 13:36that we go through eventually yeah
- 13:40so what skills and attributes do players
- 13:41require in order to overcome the
- 13:43challenges that present
- 13:44that again presents themselves so again
- 13:47paul just going through your
- 13:48your key factors in your diagram here
- 13:51yeah just to repeat what we've done on
- 13:52the other
- 13:53courses um context is is basically the
- 13:56strengths and weaknesses maybe of
- 13:58of the the the players the opponent
- 14:02um and the attacking player what's their
- 14:04strengths how do they
- 14:05um use them against their opponent
- 14:08position
- 14:08yeah here obviously he's blind side um
- 14:11that what he's looking for but we look
- 14:13at the position the scanning
- 14:15how does he scan for the for the the
- 14:17password and receiver relationship he's
- 14:19scanning where the goalkeeper is he's
- 14:20scanning the position of defenders
- 14:22and then the footwork the movement and
- 14:24then deception here in this case it's
- 14:26blind side so the defender can't see him
- 14:28it's deceptive movement the timing at
- 14:31which he he makes the move
- 14:32and then of course the technique what's
- 14:34the actual finish in the end
- 14:35um what's the pass like as well because
- 14:37the pass was vital
- 14:39and to be left playable first time and
- 14:41then the technique
- 14:42to get over the ball and finish and
- 14:44we'll sort of go through that
- 14:46on each of our you know each of the ones
- 14:48we're looking at we're
- 14:49observing
- 14:54and yeah just to add in you know now we
- 14:56got to this stage in the course really
- 14:58all those things the position scanning
- 15:00movement deception time all those things
- 15:02they add up to anticipation and
- 15:04communication you know
- 15:06the communication of the body language
- 15:08of kane to say this is where i want the
- 15:10ball
- 15:11and the whole movement um but also the
- 15:14anticipation
- 15:15and to read where the defender is going
- 15:17to read where the goalkeeper will be
- 15:19all those type of things i think are
- 15:20inherent within that model yeah
- 15:25yeah and again as we're doing it we you
- 15:27know it's a systematic process
- 15:29you know to to look at from from head
- 15:31down
- 15:32and so we're looking from the head down
- 15:34because it's vital without without
- 15:35scanning and getting the information
- 15:37then we're not going to see you know to
- 15:39see the next part
- 15:40so we'd start with that systematically
- 15:43you know observe the the range frequency
- 15:45timing of
- 15:46the scanning skills that's absolutely
- 15:48vital the top players are looking all
- 15:49the time checking the goalkeeper's
- 15:50position
- 15:51checking the defender's head the
- 15:53position checking for
- 15:54the little signals from harry kane to to
- 15:57um
- 15:58to sterling and so on and and then you
- 16:01we're looking at the body position
- 16:02shoulders arms hips
- 16:04and the way that he dipped down his body
- 16:06to keep over the ball
- 16:07kane in that situation and the footwork
- 16:09to get him into into place and the
- 16:11stride pattern
- 16:12and the connection on the ball you know
- 16:14so we're looking at all those things
- 16:15very closely
- 16:17and um yeah just to recap again warren
- 16:20yeah
- 16:20so again just another way of looking at
- 16:22it so we just break it down for your
- 16:23process by process so
- 16:25obviously here here's the same um
- 16:27snapshot
- 16:28sterling about to to go in and win the
- 16:30ball
- 16:32so again his anticipation the keeper's
- 16:34played it he's read it really really
- 16:35well
- 16:36um and he's able to win it once he's won
- 16:39it's
- 16:40again the way we spoke about the past
- 16:41the relationship the pastor received a
- 16:43relationship
- 16:44so you know he's drove inside he's in
- 16:46the by line
- 16:47sometimes you know why players might
- 16:49want to cross early to finish at a near
- 16:50post
- 16:51but he's kind of kept his composure um
- 16:54and he's linked him with sterling
- 16:55obviously he's looked up to see sorry
- 16:56he's linked in
- 16:57to look up where kane is and because
- 16:59kane hasn't made that move and the
- 17:01defenders blocking the passing lane
- 17:02he's then anticipating as to where he
- 17:05may go to
- 17:06so obviously kane goes into that blind
- 17:08space in behind the defender
- 17:10so the jewelry defender it's made it
- 17:12easier for kane because
- 17:13not any point does the defender look
- 17:15around to see where kane is
- 17:17he's totally fixed fixated on where the
- 17:19ball and where sterling is
- 17:20so obviously he's able to run on the
- 17:22blind side of him so he beats his
- 17:23opponent
- 17:24the next one for me is the dual with a
- 17:26goalkeeper so again the keepers probably
- 17:28anticipating sterling to cross
- 17:30so he's probably over committed at the
- 17:31near post and once that ball's cut back
- 17:34kane's pretty much got a big gap in
- 17:36between the middle of the goal
- 17:37to score so his duel with a goalkeeper
- 17:39is he's easier because his technique's
- 17:41good
- 17:42and then finally we spoke about the
- 17:44technique and the technical execution of
- 17:45the finish
- 17:46so what always in a good position needs
- 17:49to be composed
- 17:50still needs to get he's as i said his
- 17:51knee and his head over the top of the
- 17:53ball to be able to finish calmly into
- 17:55the goal so
- 17:56there's the process that you're looking
- 17:57at so a great a great way of pressing
- 18:00higher
- 18:00winning the ball relationship between um
- 18:03parcel receiver
- 18:05draw your opponent uh dual with a
- 18:07goalkeeper and obviously
- 18:08executing the finish
- 18:12so what does the game look like within
- 18:14the game so again we're just gonna we're
- 18:16gonna watch a video so sorry if you
- 18:17could play the video for us please
- 18:51so again paul you just want to break it
- 18:53down and sort of talk through this clip
- 18:54for us please
- 18:55yeah well i think you've got three blind
- 18:57side runs first the winger runs blind
- 18:58side
- 18:59uh to get to get through here so that's
- 19:02a blind side run now
- 19:04um the striker here has run away and now
- 19:07just about to
- 19:07play the ball through and she's really
- 19:10she's created that picture she's
- 19:11revealed the picture she wants for the
- 19:13pass
- 19:14and of course you've got the the wide
- 19:15player here he's going to score he's
- 19:17also blind side
- 19:18of her marker and slides in and get a
- 19:20really good contact
- 19:22so i think it's worth just going back on
- 19:25that a second if i can get hold of it
- 19:28and i'll just drag it back slightly
- 19:31so if we look here as it comes in here
- 19:35we've already looked here at the uh
- 19:37striker but if we look at the fullback
- 19:39here she's also blind hat
- 19:41blindside here so that's highlighting
- 19:42the striker but the goal scorer here
- 19:45is blindside just a little bit offside
- 19:47here but just means look there she just
- 19:49sees now the defenders cena for the
- 19:51first time
- 19:52so again that blind side position that
- 19:54cunning you know being deceptive being a
- 19:56position to see the passer
- 19:58and to get that relationship with the
- 19:59passer but also to
- 20:01you know lose the defender and then she
- 20:03comes in and i think the finish is
- 20:05really good
- 20:06because she doesn't swing at it she gets
- 20:07a really good contact
- 20:09this cuts out the goalkeeper completely
- 20:12and it's a great position at the far
- 20:14post and yeah no swinging just bang
- 20:16really good contact with the foot
- 20:18to to make sure she stays on the ball
- 20:20yeah yeah
- 20:21very good play let me just load the next
- 20:24video for us please sir
- 21:00um
- 21:12so if we just look at this and we just
- 21:13look at eddie nikita who's just
- 21:16off the ball here so again you've got
- 21:18movement going forward he comes deep
- 21:20he looks there if you look at the
- 21:22quadrant now he's kind of getting first
- 21:23thing he's doing he's getting in between
- 21:24defenders
- 21:25and he's created space in behind by
- 21:27coming deep the way he spins on the bald
- 21:29air and takes it all in one motion is
- 21:31fantastic
- 21:32and just calmly gets across the defender
- 21:35and calmly finishes
- 21:37but if we go again and we look at
- 21:38another angle here and you can really
- 21:40see the way he sort of
- 21:42he takes the ball and kind of spins in a
- 21:43180 movement
- 21:45and doesn't lose any momentum but for me
- 21:48it's the first touch here in that
- 21:49quadrant
- 21:50when to come across the defender that
- 21:52opens up the goal scoring opportunity
- 21:53for me
- 21:55so this touch here that he takes now
- 21:58he's in control
- 21:59now the defender can't touch him and
- 22:01then now you're thinking about his jaw
- 22:03with a goalkeeper he sort of stays
- 22:04upright
- 22:05and he's able to slide in calmly
- 22:08so again here across the defender
- 22:12but here he looks up he knows exactly
- 22:14where the keeper is he knows his
- 22:16pressure from behind
- 22:17doesn't panic and just calmly just lifts
- 22:19it into that corner
- 22:21great great composure
- 22:29pull anything on there yeah it's a
- 22:31lovely goal isn't it i mean again
- 22:33taking it step by step those four parts
- 22:35the relationship with the passer
- 22:37you know he gets into space shows
- 22:39clearly whether
- 22:40where the pass can go he beats the first
- 22:43defender
- 22:43i think it's the four by being blind
- 22:45side and then the second defender the
- 22:48duel there
- 22:49he uses his body as a barrier by cutting
- 22:51right across him at that point this is
- 22:53brilliant play
- 22:54there's footwork there the technique and
- 22:56then i love this
- 22:57is you can't tell it's coming he's all
- 22:59in his stride so the the duel with the
- 23:01goalkeeper has great deception
- 23:03and he takes it close enough here but
- 23:04he's scanning the goalkeeper's position
- 23:06he looks up
- 23:07but you just don't know when he's going
- 23:09to play it just looks like another step
- 23:10this
- 23:11so the deception just looks like another
- 23:13step
- 23:14you know you don't know he's not really
- 23:16any extra back lift
- 23:17and he's got a position where the
- 23:19goalkeeper's no chance he's look how
- 23:21close he is
- 23:22the speed it beats him so you know the
- 23:25execution
- 23:26was superb to you know not break his
- 23:29stride not give any clues
- 23:31this um you know every section of that
- 23:34goal was
- 23:34was brilliant really yeah yeah top class
- 23:37slide you've got another clip for us
- 23:39please
- 23:45yeah and here's the password and
- 23:46receiver relationship he just
- 23:48peels out to give a little bit of space
- 23:50then he beats the defender with a
- 23:52little change of speed and direction
- 23:55and um and then beats the goalkeeper
- 23:58with pace but with
- 23:59brilliant accuracy so we see it here
- 24:01look now he's starting to
- 24:03give a picture to the to the passer
- 24:05reveal what he wants
- 24:06now drags it just that yard
- 24:10we'll see it again
- 24:14yeah opens up the space makes it clear
- 24:16where he wants it
- 24:17now he's got the defender just a little
- 24:19touch and it's the speed also the speed
- 24:21from
- 24:22he's dragged across with his right to
- 24:23that how quickly hits it with his left
- 24:25there's no leg it's touching hit as it
- 24:28comes across and that
- 24:29the speed of the of the hit and very
- 24:32little back lift really he's just
- 24:34bump hits it quick and i think he knows
- 24:37exactly what he's doing
- 24:38to try and aim it hard and fast and low
- 24:41and between the keepers legs
- 24:43you know the goalkeeper just can't react
- 24:44fast enough and i would say
- 24:46hurry kane you see him get him arrange
- 24:48his body into that position
- 24:51so many times the foot works right then
- 24:53he arranges his body
- 24:54so that that shot there is just a
- 24:57constant
- 24:58he can probably do that ten times out of
- 25:00ten ten times out of ten because
- 25:02you know if it was the far corner he was
- 25:04after he'd be hitting that
- 25:06um and that's what you need that sort of
- 25:09consistency of
- 25:10getting your body in the right position
- 25:12and you know staying on the ball
- 25:14in the right way to make sure it goes
- 25:16there so it's that little dragon then
- 25:18hit
- 25:18very very short back lift here it's not
- 25:20a big back lift
- 25:21you know it happens very quick i think
- 25:24also pulling when you look at when you
- 25:26talk about modern day goalkeepers you
- 25:28know
- 25:28strikers are sometimes now told you know
- 25:30to strike at the keepers because they'll
- 25:32spread themselves
- 25:33um and you know harry kane is totally
- 25:34aware that the keepers he's going down
- 25:36he's going to make himself big in his
- 25:38goal and ultimately gets a great
- 25:39connection he's able to put it for his
- 25:41legs
- 25:42yeah so it's a weak spot for the goalie
- 25:44because he's got a spread to push off
- 25:46and um you know he can't they can't move
- 25:48quick enough the speed at which he hits
- 25:50it so
- 25:51but also the queues for the goalkeeper
- 25:53because he touches and hits fast
- 25:55you know that one hitting there it's not
- 25:57like he gets to see a lot of cues as
- 25:59it's coming
- 25:59yeah um and harry kane will just know
- 26:02that's a stock finish from
- 26:03that position time after time after time
- 26:05after time so that
- 26:07also means you've got to you've got to
- 26:09get your session design
- 26:10to allow your strikers to get into that
- 26:12sort of position regularly yeah
- 26:15okay so what does this look like
- 26:19within the games obviously what we've
- 26:20just gone through
- 26:22so yeah
- 26:25i think when we're observing what they
- 26:27do these these top players
- 26:29then it is very useful to have this sort
- 26:31of quadrant idea it's it's not just on
- 26:33the floor but in the air
- 26:34because how do they arrange you got to
- 26:36look at how they arrange the body so
- 26:38um you know he just changes speed very
- 26:41slightly to drag it to his
- 26:43to his uh left and then the way he
- 26:45arranges his body bang or in the other
- 26:47clip
- 26:48where he he's taken the he's got the cut
- 26:50back from sterling the way he arranges
- 26:52his body
- 26:53within that quadrant you've got to
- 26:54really look at it because he leans
- 26:56forward in that clip to make sure that
- 26:58he gets the contact and he keeps his
- 27:00body position
- 27:01you know he keeps it stable he stays
- 27:04locked in in that body position so he
- 27:05doesn't hit the ball and then fall away
- 27:08he's locked in with his body position to
- 27:10make sure that
- 27:11you know it's not just where the ball
- 27:13will go will depend on the backswing
- 27:15but then the follow through so you don't
- 27:18want to follow through going underneath
- 27:19the ball in high
- 27:20so he he's brilliant harry kane keep him
- 27:23locked in
- 27:24and he's very consistent if you see him
- 27:26hit that type of shot
- 27:28right in the corner the far corner and
- 27:30he does it with both feet so that's
- 27:32again another lesson for our session
- 27:34design
- 27:34can we make sure that our forwards are
- 27:37getting opportunities to practice that
- 27:39against the defender and the goalkeeper
- 27:42from those sort of angles on a regular
- 27:43basis
- 27:44yeah i mean i think the key thing is you
- 27:45mentioned working off of both sides paul
- 27:47you know
- 27:48like has been able to have the balance
- 27:49to be able to strike comfortably off of
- 27:51both sides
- 27:52so creating that opportunity and
- 27:53training is essential isn't it
- 27:55yeah and i've read somewhere that harry
- 27:57kane from the age of about 16
- 27:59he had a period where he would only use
- 28:00his left foot in training
- 28:02or after training he was doing it so he
- 28:04was honing what he could do with his
- 28:06right
- 28:06make sure he can do with his left and
- 28:08that's the difference the top strikers
- 28:10can do it both sides
- 28:11you can get some really good strikers
- 28:13who are great on one side but can they
- 28:15do it on both
- 28:16he does it on both and he's got this
- 28:18secret of keeping the ball really low i
- 28:20think
- 28:24and yeah and this is just a revision
- 28:26really of the process that we've been
- 28:28through
- 28:28so what we've looked at is can we break
- 28:31down the assessment of what we're doing
- 28:33well okay we're using the quadrant as a
- 28:34guide sometimes in the cylinder
- 28:36we're using you know the key factors of
- 28:38context usually against what type of
- 28:40striker are they
- 28:42we're looking at position we're looking
- 28:43at scanning movement deception and so on
- 28:46um but we've broken it down also the
- 28:48process into
- 28:50right how does he get the pass in the
- 28:52first place from the passer
- 28:53so this was the one with sterling from
- 28:55the halfway line
- 28:56you see harry kane's inside his man but
- 28:59now once sterling gets space and breaks
- 29:01free
- 29:02he starts to run across so that was on
- 29:05the on the first diagram we had one of
- 29:06the runs across the face of the defender
- 29:09and on as he starts to do that you know
- 29:12on number three comes across the face of
- 29:14him four he's coming across
- 29:15five he's opening the space up six seven
- 29:18it's opened up
- 29:19ready for that space and so that would
- 29:22be the first part we're looking at
- 29:23of course while we're doing that the
- 29:25next part is you know that duel with the
- 29:27defender
- 29:28so in this this other example you know
- 29:31what is he doing
- 29:32or in the same example yeah once he gets
- 29:33into that he's already the jewel to
- 29:36create the space
- 29:37for the past but now can he create the
- 29:38space for the shot against the defender
- 29:41so he slows down he lets the defender
- 29:43come in up to number five
- 29:45and then at six and seven he starts to
- 29:47just drag
- 29:48and hit dragon hit quickly and then i
- 29:51think
- 29:51nine and ten show you like that how he
- 29:54stays locked in on that body shape
- 29:56um it really helps you with the duel
- 29:58with the defender so paul
- 30:00just just going back on to one and i
- 30:02spoke about you know
- 30:03and once you start putting defenders in
- 30:05there determines when strikers can go
- 30:07so yeah you've got one and the defender
- 30:09obviously isn't looking at kane because
- 30:10obviously he's looking at sterling
- 30:12driving forward
- 30:13yeah body position is obviously close to
- 30:16kane
- 30:16so kane's in control here he knows if he
- 30:18pulls the back of that defender
- 30:20because the defender is just watching
- 30:21the ball yeah potentially now be able to
- 30:23take a touch into the box to be able to
- 30:25finish
- 30:25which are yeah what happens exactly and
- 30:28that's why it is sort of you know
- 30:29it's vital he's looking at the defender
- 30:31constantly throughout because if the
- 30:33defender were to rush across
- 30:35he might cut back inside and go across
- 30:37the floor with the defender so you've
- 30:38got to be looking at the defenders
- 30:40movement all the time
- 30:41it might be it cuts back inside if the
- 30:43defenders sort of over covering or
- 30:45coming in too quick so yeah all of that
- 30:47comes into it
- 30:48um but yeah i think there's a great set
- 30:50of
- 30:51of clips to show you that duel with the
- 30:53defender yeah then we've gone on to the
- 30:55duel with the goalkeeper and
- 30:56again you know at this point number one
- 30:59he's just
- 31:00dragging it to the side away from the
- 31:02from the um
- 31:05from the defender but he knows straight
- 31:07away that look
- 31:08number two number three the goalkeeper
- 31:10is now about to get set
- 31:11jumping to get set so he knows
- 31:14that that strike that's he's about eight
- 31:17yards out his knee
- 31:18from uh from the defender from the for
- 31:20the goalkeeper so if he hits it quick so
- 31:22if the time between his touch with his
- 31:24right foot to drag it
- 31:26and and then he hits it left if that's
- 31:28quick it gives
- 31:29the um goalkeeper last time to get set
- 31:32he might still be moving
- 31:33he ca if he catches him while he's
- 31:35moving he can't push off as quick and
- 31:37adapt
- 31:38and then it's like the speed of it so
- 31:40the contact
- 31:41the way arranges his body you know his
- 31:43footwork first the way he arranges his
- 31:45body
- 31:46nope no doubt he's had a scan to see the
- 31:48keepers position
- 31:50uh i think one the you know this weekend
- 31:52the keeper
- 31:53left a space maybe high over his
- 31:54shoulder so that's another option
- 31:56high over your shoulder from an angle
- 31:58because it's difficult for the
- 31:59goalkeeper
- 32:00for from getting his hands down to up um
- 32:03can be a problem but in this case you
- 32:05know he stayed on the ball with that
- 32:06jewel the goalkeeper just gone hot
- 32:08hard and uh you know through his legs
- 32:11and i might hit the goalkeeper's leg and
- 32:12go in or
- 32:13go whiz past the outside of his foot um
- 32:16but i'm pretty sure he's aiming and he
- 32:19can hit it most times how he came
- 32:21right through the keeper's legs yeah
- 32:22yeah so i mean that's something that i
- 32:24mean
- 32:24there's no fluke here is there i mean
- 32:25this is something obviously harry kane
- 32:27had practiced constantly
- 32:28got to keep her in the box driving
- 32:30towards him keeper's going to make
- 32:31himself big
- 32:32uh where's the weak spot and you know
- 32:35and he finds it
- 32:36very well if you made that a really big
- 32:38sort of cylinder the duel between him
- 32:40and the goalkeeper
- 32:41then obviously the space is is from that
- 32:43distance
- 32:44with power the space is definitely
- 32:46through his legs or past his feet
- 32:48because he can't get his hands down
- 32:49quickly enough
- 32:50or it might well be over the shoulder so
- 32:52you're looking at what are the dangerous
- 32:53spaces to hit
- 32:55um definitely um and then we just look
- 32:58in the last one we're talking about this
- 33:00technical execution so those four steps
- 33:03we've broken it down
- 33:04so the drag to the right here um you
- 33:07know gets in the yard
- 33:08i think it's then the speed of the shot
- 33:11from dragging to hitting
- 33:12is important but then it's the you know
- 33:15how he keeps his body
- 33:16shape locked in and so it doesn't go
- 33:19over the bar he makes sure he keeps it
- 33:21low
- 33:21and he's a master at this obviously um
- 33:25the amount of goals he's scored like
- 33:26this is incredible and a great example
- 33:28for young players
- 33:29but also for our coaches to say you know
- 33:33he's got to make sure you hit it low and
- 33:35look at your body shape look how he
- 33:36stays locked in
- 33:37i think is a key thing yeah i mean just
- 33:40the way just the way he shifts the ball
- 33:41he's in control the whole time
- 33:42isn't it you know he shifts it to the
- 33:45side and when he gets his shot off
- 33:46there's not much time between
- 33:48him shifting out of his feet and him
- 33:49actually executing it yeah that speed's
- 33:51vital yeah
- 33:52yeah and then the speed of the shot it's
- 33:54fantastic
- 33:58so again just going through the going
