- 0:00you've all been told two lies growing up
- 0:03the first you never amount to anything
- 0:07maybe you heard it from a parent a
- 0:09teacher someone you hoped would believe
- 0:11in you and the second lie is you can be
- 0:14anything you want maybe you heard it
- 0:17from a speaker or from someone in your
- 0:19life but the truth is you can't be
- 0:22anything you want but you can be
- 0:24everything you are many of us get
- 0:26paralyzed by the pursuit of passion and
- 0:29purpose but by the end of this video
- 0:31you'll know how to find yours one of the
- 0:34main reasons you struggle to find your
- 0:37passion and purpose is because you
- 0:39believe you have to have found it by a
- 0:41certain age I meet so many people who
- 0:43say Jay I'm 20 years old should I know
- 0:46my purpose J I'm 30 years old how is it
- 0:48that I don't know my passion I'm 40 I'm
- 0:51still figuring it out the truth is it's
- 0:54something that we're constantly
- 0:55collecting and connecting we're
- 0:58collecting new experiences we're
- 1:00connecting them with old ones and that's
- 1:03what starts to build our passion and
- 1:05purpose many of us feel pressure to find
- 1:07our purpose in our 20s but many
- 1:10successful people find their stride
- 1:13later in his biography Andre Agy dropped
- 1:16a bombshell on the world the former
- 1:19world's number one tennis player
- 1:20eight-time grand slam champion and Gold
- 1:23Medal winner didn't like tennis Agassi
- 1:27was pushed into playing by his father
- 1:29and those though he was incredible at
- 1:31the game he hated playing it the fact
- 1:34that he was tremendously successful and
- 1:36made loads of money didn't matter it
- 1:39wasn't his purpose but Agassi
- 1:41transitioned his uncaught success into
- 1:44his true passion instead of serving Aces
- 1:47he's now serving others the Andre agasse
- 1:50Foundation runs a k through2 College
- 1:53Prep School for atrisk
- 1:56youth we often think that there's one
- 1:59clear party to purpose we often think
- 2:01that someone must have figured it out
- 2:03can I not just use that same formula in
- 2:06my life and the truth is there's no one
- 2:08clear way but there are four paths that
- 2:11you can consider here's what they
- 2:13are the first is pain so many people who
- 2:18now live purposeful lives found their
- 2:21purpose through pain what do I mean by
- 2:23this they experienced a pain early on in
- 2:26life and they so badly wanted no one to
- 2:29never experienced that pain again that
- 2:32they started helping others get through
- 2:34it maybe you've gone through a
- 2:36particular life event and you'd never
- 2:38wish it on your worst enemy maybe you
- 2:41experienced something at a young age and
- 2:43you hope no one ever has to go through
- 2:46that maybe you overcame a pain a lot of
- 2:49you may be survivors maybe you beat a
- 2:51disease and now you want to give other
- 2:53people the strength the Courage the
- 2:55motivation to do the same that's when
- 2:58you're turning your pain into to purpose
- 3:01this is the second path to
- 3:03purpose number two
- 3:06potential a lot of us have skills we
- 3:10have mindsets we have abilities that
- 3:13we're not even sure about that we're not
- 3:15even aware of you have got hidden
- 3:18potential inside of you maybe you have a
- 3:21particular way your mind works around
- 3:22problem solving maybe you've got a
- 3:24really cool skill that you never knew
- 3:27until later on in life when you actually
- 3:29experiment mented and explored so many
- 3:31of us don't sample until later on in
- 3:34life the process of sampling is saying
- 3:37I'm going to try a new skill every
- 3:40weekend for a whole year you're now
- 3:42going to test yourself for 52 skills I
- 3:45promise you you're going to see yourself
- 3:48have an innate ability in one or two of
- 3:50them a lot of us may test one a year for
- 3:53the next 10 years a lot of us may test
- 3:55one over the next 10 years the point is
- 3:59it's all the game of odds the more
- 4:01chances you take at testing your
- 4:03experiences testing your skills the more
- 4:06likely you're quickly going to discover
- 4:08what you naturally have a talent
- 4:10potential and skill for I remember when
- 4:13I was 18 and I was doing so many
- 4:16different things I was doing everything
- 4:17from managing leading speaking
- 4:20organizing and that's when I discovered
- 4:22that I loved learning teaching and
- 4:25sharing it became a part of my life ever
- 4:27since 18 and all I did then I had to do
- 4:30was hone that skill develop it build it
- 4:33find new ways of challenging myself and
- 4:35it continues to be something I pursue
- 4:37today it's as simple as that find out
- 4:39what your hidden potention is by
- 4:41allowing yourself to fail allowing
- 4:44yourself to make mistakes allowing
- 4:45yourself to try as many things as you
- 4:47possibly can over the next 12 months or
- 4:51better than that over the next 30
- 4:54days number three is a problem you see
- 5:01in the planet maybe there's something
- 5:04around you something you see it may not
- 5:06even be something you've experienced but
- 5:09it's a challenge you feel pull to solve
- 5:12a cause that you feel called to help I
- 5:15know many people who say I'm struggling
- 5:18to see what's happening to our
- 5:19environment I have to help I know other
- 5:22people who say I'm really struggling to
- 5:23see how animals are treated I have to
- 5:25help there are so many things that we
- 5:27feel called to now this this is often
- 5:30what we think of as purpose and a lot of
- 5:31us keep waiting for that calling we keep
- 5:34wishing for that calling until we do
- 5:36something and that's why often find that
- 5:38the other parts are so useful it could
- 5:40come from your own pain it could come
- 5:42from your own potential and now it can
- 5:45come from an outside problem or an
- 5:47outside pain that like I said you may
- 5:50not have experienced personally but you
- 5:52feel like you want to help and the
- 5:54fourth PA to purpose is platform as we
- 5:58just discussed in the case of Andre
- 6:00Agassi he was able to use the platform
- 6:03that he'd built in order to have a
- 6:05positive impact I meet and speak to so
- 6:09many people who feel like they've wasted
- 6:11the last 10 to 20 years of their life
- 6:14chasing a career chasing a title chasing
- 6:17a promotion and now they feel like it's
- 6:19been worthless and the truth is it isn't
- 6:23any experience you have anything that
- 6:25you've achieved up until now can be used
- 6:27it's a platform that you stand on that
- 6:30can be used to have a positive impact in
- 6:32the world don't downplay your experience
- 6:34don't downplay the skills don't downplay
- 6:36all the work you've done no matter what
- 6:39age you are no matter where you are in
- 6:41your life you can use everything you've
- 6:43built everything you've learned in order
- 6:45to serve and help other people now one
- 6:48of the biggest questions I get is Jay
- 6:50how do I actually discover my potential
- 6:53how do I actually discover my skill how
- 6:55do I actually discover my passion in
- 6:58order to help others with it sometimes
- 7:00you're just struggling to find that
- 7:02direction I want to give you an exercise
- 7:04that I want you to do with me right now
- 7:06that will help you discover it in the
- 7:08next few moments what I want you to do
- 7:11is create four lists the first list is
- 7:15what you have a skill in but no passion
- 7:18there may be something that you're
- 7:19pretty good at maybe you're naturally
- 7:21good at numbers maybe you're a great
- 7:22editor maybe you're really good at
- 7:25understanding people's behavior but
- 7:27maybe it's something you're not
- 7:28passionate about this is likely what you
- 7:31actually do for work a lot of our jobs
- 7:33and a lot of our work is based on things
- 7:35that we're actually good at but we may
- 7:37not actually enjoy and I want you to
- 7:39make a list of the three things that
- 7:42exist in that category the second list I
- 7:45want you to make is things that you have
- 7:48no skill in but you do have a passion
- 7:50for maybe there's something that you're
- 7:52like oh I love photography but I'm a
- 7:55terrible photographer right I absolutely
- 7:58love art but I know nothing about buying
- 8:01and selling art what is something that
- 8:03you're curious about something that
- 8:04you're passionate about but you don't
- 8:06already have a skill in this is
- 8:08something that becomes something you can
- 8:10learn and build upon now the third list
- 8:13I want you to make is something that you
- 8:15have no skill and no passion in
- 8:18whatsoever this is a list of things
- 8:21where you're like I'm not good at it and
- 8:22I don't like it I don't enjoy it I want
- 8:25nothing to do with it hopefully this is
- 8:27something in the future that you'll be
- 8:28able to Outsource
- 8:30sometimes in the beginning it's
- 8:31something you have to just get on with
- 8:34just make happen and you get it this is
- 8:36not something you want to do forever but
- 8:38it may be something that you need to
- 8:39learn in the short term now what we want
- 8:41to do with these three lists is that we
- 8:44want to use them to populate the purpose
- 8:46box which is skill and passion your
- 8:49purpose is not just something that
- 8:51you're passionate about it's not just
- 8:52something that you're excited about it's
- 8:54something that you're actually really
- 8:56good at I think this is something that's
- 8:58often missed in the the conversation
- 9:00around finding passion and finding
- 9:02purpose we think oh as long as I love it
- 9:05and as long as I like it and as long as
- 9:06it's meaningful then that's a purpose
- 9:09well the truth is that unless we get
- 9:11really strategic really diligent really
- 9:13focused about it it will always remain a
- 9:15hobby it will remain a nice thing that
- 9:17we do there's an incredible quote that I
- 9:20love from Martin Luther King that says
- 9:23that people who love peace need to learn
- 9:26to organize themselves as well as those
- 9:28who love War this is one of my most
- 9:31important and deep beliefs that
- 9:34sometimes those of us that love goodness
- 9:36and love positive frequencies can be
- 9:38quite unorganized we can be kind of
- 9:40wishy-washy and woo woo but actually
- 9:42being strategic and focused allows us to
- 9:45build something that is genuine impact
- 9:48so with your first list which is skill
- 9:50but no passion ask yourself how could
- 9:53you become passionate about that skill
- 9:55what is something that you could do to
- 9:57make it more meaningful how could you
- 10:00allow yourself to get excited about it
- 10:02even if it's something you're not
- 10:03currently excited about all of a sudden
- 10:06you're pushing that into the main box
- 10:09that we want to be in now I want you to
- 10:10look at the next list no skill but
- 10:12passionate about again like I said it
- 10:15could be Photography book that
- 10:16photography course get a friend who's a
- 10:18wedding photographer or an events
- 10:20photographer to show you around go and
- 10:22Shadow someone for the day who's someone
- 10:24in your life that could help you learn
- 10:26that skill introduce you to a new trade
- 10:28all of a sudden you're now pushing that
- 10:30skill into this box as well you're
- 10:33moving into the purpose space and
- 10:35finally look at this list something you
- 10:38have no skill and no passion for but
- 10:40maybe you need it right now maybe you
- 10:42just start your own business maybe you
- 10:43got a little side hustle going on how
- 10:45are you going to do the things you may
- 10:47not even enjoy or love or be good at in
- 10:50order to help you push in that direction
- 10:54these three lists are a great place to
- 10:56start when trying to discover your
- 10:58hidden potential
- 10:59I think one of our biggest challenges
- 11:01around our conversations of purpose and
- 11:03passion is that they're all about what
- 11:05we do and not how we think about what we
- 11:07do they're about what we're doing rather
- 11:10than who we're being they're about how
- 11:12we act rather than how we think and feel
- 11:16about how we choose to act I want to
- 11:18share a case study with you to explain
- 11:19that Amy vusi and her team at the Yale
- 11:23School of Management went out in search
- 11:26for what they believed was the most
- 11:28difficult job in in the world now the
- 11:31most difficult job in the world that
- 11:33they found in around 2019 was to be a
- 11:36hospital cleaner they believe that was
- 11:38the most difficult job the job included
- 11:40cleaning floors toilets plates bathrooms
- 11:44bed sheets everything else they had to
- 11:47clean up after people used those things
- 11:49and clean up after people even passed
- 11:51away it was an extremely difficult job
- 11:54so they went and interviewed these
- 11:55cleaners now these cleaners in their own
- 11:58words describe Des themselves as low
- 12:00skilled labor they said we clean floors
- 12:03toilets plates etc etc they then
- 12:06continued to interview these cleaners
- 12:08and they found a whole new group of
- 12:10cleaners who described themselves as
- 12:13healers and as carers these healers
- 12:17worked the same hours as the cleaners
- 12:19they worked in the same hospitals as the
- 12:21cleaners they had the same shifts the
- 12:23same pay the same bosses but some saw
- 12:27themselves as cleaners and some saw
- 12:29themselves as healers so they asked them
- 12:31why the healers replied because we
- 12:34believe cleaning is integral to the
- 12:37healing journey of the patient if the
- 12:39hospital room is cleaner people feel
- 12:42better about what they're going through
- 12:45if their space is cleaner their family
- 12:47spends more time with them it is
- 12:50integral and critical to how they
- 12:53feel am Newan and her team coined the
- 12:57term job crafting where job wasn't about
- 12:59what you did every day but how you felt
- 13:02about what you did every day there's an
- 13:04incredible statement from one of my
- 13:06favorite authors Wayne Dyer where he
- 13:09said when we change the way we look at
- 13:11things the things we look at change I
- 13:15challenge you today to look at your work
- 13:18differently to look up from your phone
- 13:21to look up from your laptops your iPads
- 13:23to look beyond your screen to look
- 13:25beyond your spreadsheets your PowerPoint
- 13:27presentations whatever it may maybe your
- 13:29Keynotes and ask you who does your work
- 13:33positively impact we get so caught up in
- 13:37the dayto day that we forget that what
- 13:38we create improves the life of someone
- 13:41out there and when we reconnect with
- 13:44that feeling we're changing the way we
- 13:47look at things even if we can't change
- 13:49the thing itself right now or this
- 13:54year and remember your passion is for
- 13:57you your purpose is for for others when
- 14:00you use your passion in the service of
- 14:02others it becomes a purpose hey everyone
