- 0:00You've heard that resonance is important
- 0:02for singing, but you're not sure what it
- 0:05is, how to find it, or how to develop
- 0:08it. Well, don't worry because in this
- 0:10video, I'm going to show you exactly how
- 0:13to do that.
- 0:20All right, before we jump in, want to
- 0:22let you know you can click the link
- 0:24below and get a free download of my
- 0:28best-selling book, Beginning Singing.
- 0:31So, if you want to delve further into
- 0:32this singing stuff, there it is. All
- 0:35right.
- 0:36Resonance is what makes us sound like
- 0:41us. Resonance takes the sound waves that
- 0:46are created by your vocal cords and it
- 0:49enhances them. It changes them. It makes
- 0:53them brighter or darker. It even makes
- 0:56them sound like vowels. It's analogous
- 1:00to a trumpet.
- 1:02A trumpet player has to buzz their lips
- 1:05to create the sound wave.
- 1:07That's what our vocal cords do. But, you
- 1:10need the trumpet to really bring out the
- 1:13sound, or else it just sounds like that
- 1:15weird buzzing sound. Same with our vocal
- 1:17cords. Our trumpet is our vocal tract,
- 1:21our throat and mouth. And within this
- 1:24space, this tube, there are acoustic
- 1:28properties. And what this tube does is
- 1:32it takes certain parts of the sound wave
- 1:34and enhances them. And it's very
- 1:38important to dial into this resonance
- 1:40because we need to control the
- 1:43interaction of our sound waves and the
- 1:47resonance, especially as we sing higher.
- 1:51So, how do we do this? Well, singers
- 1:53primarily do it through listening, but
- 1:57also sensation.
- 2:00So, what I want to do is get you feeling
- 2:05resonance. And here is the super singer
- 2:10tip.
- 2:11Resonance changes as you go higher and
- 2:14the sensations of resonance change.
- 2:17You've heard chest voice and head voice.
- 2:20Well, these terms are terms of
- 2:23sensation. We feel the vibrations,
- 2:27the energy, the resonance of the voice
- 2:30in different places depending on if
- 2:32we're singing lower or higher. You can
- 2:34feel this right now yourself. Put your
- 2:36hand on your chest, say, "Ah." There's
- 2:39your chest voice, so named because of
- 2:42the sympathetic vibrations in the chest.
- 2:45Now, give me a whoop, holler.
- 2:49That feels different. We don't really
- 2:51feel it here.
- 2:52Actually, we feel it more in the head.
- 2:57Head voice.
- 2:58So, now, let's dial in to sensations of
- 3:02resonance in your voice so you can
- 3:04negotiate going from your lower to upper
- 3:08register with less problems. So, what I
- 3:11want you to do is give me the ng of
- 3:14sung.
- 3:17Good. And we're going to make this nice
- 3:18and buzzy. So, go like you're
- 3:21disagreeing with me.
- 3:24You feel that nice and buzzy?
- 3:27Now, as you do that, pay attention where
- 3:31you feel the predominant sensation. And
- 3:35I'll guide you a little bit. It's
- 3:37different for everybody. It's a little
- 3:39different, but I'm going to give you the
- 3:42general consensus, what most people
- 3:45feel. See if you don't feel this.
- 3:47Pay attention to where your tongue is
- 3:51touching your soft palate.
- 3:55Do you feel it buzz right there?
- 4:00Kind of dial into that.
- 4:03Now, I want you to just glide up to a
- 4:07higher note, as high as is comfortable,
- 4:09and glide back down.
- 4:15Does it go somewhere different on the
- 4:16high note?
- 4:19See if it doesn't do this.
- 4:23It goes up towards the head.
- 4:28That's the pathway to higher notes. It
- 4:32can help if you take your fingers and do
- 4:33this.
- 4:37Good. Now, we're just going to take some
- 4:40vowel sounds and we're going to put a Y
- 4:43in front of them. So, just say,
- 4:49Again, only as high as is comfortable.
- 4:52If you can only go
- 4:54that's all right. You'll feel a shift.
- 4:57And
- 4:59as you find that pathway, allow your
- 5:01voice to go there.
- 5:05If it flips,
- 5:07that's okay. That's all right. But, see
- 5:10if you can just cut a mostly little cry
- 5:13in there.
- 5:17That'll help hold it together so it
- 5:19doesn't fall apart. Now, let's do ye.
- 5:25Good. Now, let's start AT THE TOP.
- 5:36THERE'S YOUR PATHWAY. RESONANCE gives us
- 5:39sensations. These sensations become
- 5:42guideposts for the singer. Singers, when
- 5:45they go to sing high notes, anticipate
- 5:47this shift in the sensations of
- 5:51resonance. This occurs because the sound
- 5:55waves interact with the resonances of
- 5:57the vocal tract, but these interactions
- 6:00change as we go higher and the
- 6:02sensations change.
- 6:05The trap we fall into when trying to
- 6:07sing higher is we try and keep
- 6:09everything feeling the same. My voice is
- 6:12here. Ah. Ah. So, as I go higher, I
- 6:16think, "Well, I don't want the quality
- 6:17of my voice to change, so I'm going to
- 6:19keep it feeling the same.
- 6:21Ah." I hit a wall. But, if I allow the
- 6:24sensations to change,
- 6:29I can go higher. And changing the vowel
- 6:32as you move up is a great way to change
- 6:36the resonances. So, as you go higher,
- 6:39let yourself go to an E.
- 6:42Or go towards the U.
- 6:46Those will guide you in. Those vowels
- 6:50are easier to sing higher. Now, they can
- 6:54sometimes cause us to flip.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:58Yeah. But, just stay on that glide. Keep
- 7:01a little cry on the glide.
- 7:09And you'll start moving between your
- 7:12chest and your head voice without a
- 7:15break because you're controlling the
- 7:18resonance. You're changing the
- 7:21interaction of the resonance and the
- 7:24sound wave, and that's the secret. Hey,
