- 0:00Filipinos do not realize that Filipino
- 0:02culture is one of the greatest really
- 0:04this is really I'm very serious about it
- 0:07one of the greatest in the
- 0:08[Music]
- 0:14world I am Philipp Delan Jr I have been
- 0:17studying Philippine culture since the
- 0:2060s I've been to many parts of the
- 0:22Philippines trying to understand who we
- 0:24are and understand how Filipinos can be
- 0:27their better
- 0:28selves at the very core Filipinos are
- 0:32very highly relational people wanting to
- 0:35connect all kinds of people in all
- 0:37levels young and old whether you are
- 0:40educated or not from the poorest to the
- 0:42richest Filipinos would like to bring
- 0:44people together that's the very core of
- 0:46Filipino culture a high degree of
- 0:48relationality connectivity this has to
- 0:51do with the philosophy of Kapa Kapa
- 0:53means the other person is also yourself
- 0:55Filipinos believe that they have no
- 0:57separate existence they're all one
- 0:59that's the meaning of Kapa every
- 1:01person's responsibility is not only to
- 1:03himself but to
- 1:06others that's why according to CL tayag
- 1:08a culinary expert our culture has no
- 1:11recipe for a single person it's always a
- 1:13recipe for 6 to 10 people because we
- 1:15expect food to be shared that's why any
- 1:18chance upon family is having dinner you
- 1:20will always be invited to share the
- 1:21dinner with them in a Festa even if you
- 1:24are not invited you enter any house
- 1:26where there is food is the basis of this
- 1:29because in an individualistic culture a
- 1:31person feels separated from others and
- 1:33therefore there's no natural
- 1:35responsibility for everyone to serve in
- 1:37a materialistic culture where people are
- 1:39confined to their physical selves you
- 1:41don't see yourself connected to others
- 1:43because connectedness has to do with a
- 1:45spiritual belief no that the spirit of
- 1:47God connects us all to one another so
- 1:49this is the very essence of Filipino
- 1:51culture a culture of sharing a culture
- 1:53that would like to bring people together
- 1:56[Music]
- 2:02our language has been with us since
- 2:04around 2,500 years ago we were already
- 2:06Filipinos even though we were not called
- 2:08philippinos at that time we were
- 2:10aans all our languages came from one
- 2:13Island in Taiwan and it's not Chinese
- 2:15it's a Southeast Asian archipelago a
- 2:17Southeast Asian place with at least nine
- 2:19ethnic groups and one ethnic group there
- 2:21was our ancestors this ethnic group went
- 2:24down from Taiwan to batanes the of down
- 2:27to the visayas men and Indonesia
- 2:31Malaysia so the languages of Indonesia
- 2:33and Malaysia came from us we even
- 2:35brought this languages to the Pacific
- 2:38Micronesia Melania poia as far as
- 2:40eastern island and Hawaii and he brought
- 2:43this languages even to the West in
- 2:44Madagascar Africa that's why if you go
- 2:47to madas Africa they speak a language
- 2:48similar too Tagalog Kang it's called
- 2:50malagi and that time alone no you're
- 2:54already highly relational because our
- 2:56language shape us we shape our language
- 2:59and the language in turn shapes
- 3:02us filipin languages are the most highly
- 3:05relational of all the aonian languages
- 3:08we have the highest number of
- 3:10conjugations how many conjugations are
- 3:12possible in English the word to eat eat
- 3:15eating ate eaten what else are suppose
- 3:20you can have at most 12 conjugations of
- 3:22one word or one verb in English but not
- 3:24more than 12 what about Kain the Tagalog
- 3:27word for it in less than an hour you can
- 3:29come up with 100 conations
- 3:32[Music]
- 3:37of so many no so what does that mean
- 3:40that means we are highly relational from
- 3:42the very beginning we're already highly
- 3:44relational because every conjugation is
- 3:47a kind of
- 3:49relationship all of us let's go together
- 3:51and
- 3:52eat do the eating for me that's another
- 3:55kind of
- 3:56relation well I was compelled to eat
- 3:58because others were eating oh that's
- 4:00another kind of relation not every
- 4:02conjugation is a relationship also
- 4:04another thing look at our languages it
- 4:06has very fine no one say for
- 4:08relationships I don't know of any single
- 4:10word in English that refers to a group
- 4:12action a verb like Maus Maus all of you
- 4:16go
- 4:17out together let's eat I don't know
- 4:19anybody in English any verb in English
- 4:21that refers to a collective action it's
- 4:23Collective that means This is highly
- 4:25relational again and that's in the
- 4:26language so much in the language
- 4:33you're equally beautiful equally ugly
- 4:36there's no translation in English these
- 4:38are verbs adjectives that are mutually
- 4:40reciprocal connecting people to one
- 4:42another there's none of that in English
- 4:45as far as I
- 4:46know so we can see our relationality in
- 4:49our language but we can also see it in
- 4:52our
- 4:53geography people say that we're a
- 4:56divided country because we're an
- 4:57archipelago but the truth is really
- 4:59different
- 5:00people who live in a land mass rather
- 5:04than archipelago will even be more
- 5:06divided if this land mass is so
- 5:08mountainous a mountainous area that is
- 5:10just one landm is where people will be
- 5:12so extremely divided because it's
- 5:15mountains that divide how can you easily
- 5:17go from one side of the mountain to the
- 5:18other side of the mountain it might take
- 5:19you days before you can go to the other
- 5:21side but people in a short time learn to
- 5:24cross from one Island to the other
- 5:26through water especially because our
- 5:28origin from Taiwan we really cross
- 5:30islands and our ancient prowess in
- 5:33Maritime navigation really made us very
- 5:35very skilled in water the Filipinos all
- 5:37over the world we Master Navigators on
- 5:40the sea so if you go to the Philippines
- 5:43you will find that any two Island
- 5:45separated by water we speak the same
- 5:47language because we are connected by
- 5:50water and divided by mountains look at
- 5:53Negros Negros is divided by Mount Canon
- 5:56decided faces ILO speaks elongo decided
- 5:59faces speaks seano masb the one that
- 6:02faes latest summer speaks warai the one
- 6:04that faces Bol is speaks Bolano and so
- 6:06on this is true anywhere in the country
- 6:09if two islands are separated they water
- 6:10they are more unified so it's not true
- 6:13that we are divided because we an an
- 6:14archipelago in fact we are more united
- 6:16because of being an
- 6:19[Music]
- 6:21archipelago and so because of our highly
- 6:23relational culture our creative genius
- 6:26was able to flourish within the
- 6:28traditional Filipino cultures and that's
- 6:30because in traditional cultures the
- 6:32sense of community is very very strong
- 6:34this is the norm in all of our
- 6:36traditional societies if there is a very
- 6:38strong sense of community you feel more
- 6:40relaxed you don't feel any tension no
- 6:42now the more relaxed you are the more
- 6:44open you are the more you are you the
- 6:46more you can bring out who you really
- 6:48are you become more expressive you
- 6:51become more artistic you become a
- 6:53natural artist that's why in our
- 6:55traditional cultures everybody is an
- 6:58artist almost no reception no matter
- 7:00what the work is of a person you can be
- 7:02sure that he is doing some kind of art
- 7:04why because the more close you are to
- 7:07one another the more you would like to
- 7:09understand and do what others can do if
- 7:11you're are very close to the farmer you
- 7:13will learn farming if you're very close
- 7:15to the carpenter you will learn
- 7:16carpentry you are very close to the
- 7:18arario you will learn traditional
- 7:20medicine if you are close to your mother
- 7:22you will learn how she cooks so closest
- 7:24to one another makes you learn so many
- 7:25things as you grow up this is the reason
- 7:27why the Filipinos are so very
- 7:30multi-talented simply because when you
- 7:32are one with the community and you like
- 7:35to relate to everybody you have to know
- 7:37what others are doing how can you be so
- 7:39close if you are only a very narrow
- 7:41specialist for example I can cite the
- 7:43example of s Salan who was one of the
- 7:46awarders for the national Living
- 7:47Treasures award in the Philippines
- 7:49called manik Bayan well just like any
- 7:51male in Mendo Society or even female
- 7:54almost anybody can play the K but
- 7:56someone happen to be the best but you
- 7:59know that he is not only the best in
- 8:00that instrument he's also the favorite
- 8:02barber in his town and also a Muslim
- 8:06Imam or priest but he was also a very
- 8:09good farmer because he grew up in such
- 8:11an environment where everybody is
- 8:12multi-skilled and if you are really so
- 8:15relaxed you can easily learn other
- 8:17skills because you will have no
- 8:19difficulty learning anything if you are
- 8:21doing it in a spirit of play in a spirit
- 8:23of play everything becomes so easy
- 8:25that's the reason no our sense of
- 8:28community which makes us very
- 8:32[Music]
- 8:34multi-talented my Filipino dream is for
- 8:38Filipinos to be educated in their
- 8:40culture Filipinos do not realize that
- 8:43Filipino culture is one of the greatest
- 8:45in the world because of the philosophy
- 8:48of kwat if we are one we have a shared
- 8:51responsibility for one another this is a
- 8:54very profound philosophy a shared
- 8:56responsibility it's not Dog Eat Dog
- 8:59attitude ude it's not survival of the
- 9:00fitness it's not ruthless competition
- 9:03it's cooperation collaboration Harmony
- 9:06you know how the world has survive how
- 9:08Humanity has survived according to an
- 9:09Poli we have survived because of
- 9:11cooperation rather than competition
- 9:13that's the wave of life there's no
- 9:15Harmony on Earth no species would have
- 9:18survived we have to emphasize that that
- 9:21our culture is based on cooperation
- 9:23Harmony by any hand doing things
- 9:27together for the common good this is who
- 9:28Filipinos are but philippinos don't
- 9:30realize this the more we realize it the
- 9:32better for not only us but the better
- 9:34for the world because we can promote our
- 9:36culture everywhere and we can be very
- 9:38proud of being Filipino now the
- 9:40Filipinos are not very proud of who they
- 9:41are simply because they don't know who
- 9:43they
- 9:43are secondly I'd like Filipinos to
- 9:47discover how different we are from one
- 9:49another the first one is how we are one
- 9:51no but the second is our diversity we
- 9:54have at least 131 languages in this
- 9:56country because the older Society is the
- 9:58more language it has a young Society
- 10:01will not have its own languages
- 10:02Singapore Australia Canada they still
- 10:05use English or French because they are
- 10:07new societies that means if we have 131
- 10:10languages that means we are a very old
- 10:11culture we have at least 50,000 years
- 10:14old we are a new nation but we are a
- 10:17very old people if we have 131 languages
- 10:20that means we have so many different
- 10:22cultures the basic subject that I wish
- 10:25Filipinos to learn aside from the
- 10:27concept of Kapa How We Are One is how
- 10:30rich we are in terms of cultural
- 10:32diversity knowing all kinds of Filipinos
- 10:35and their cultural genius this is the
- 10:38best way to make the philippinos proud
- 10:40of themselves because the more
- 10:41philippinos know about Kapa and the more
- 10:43they know about this diversity how rich
- 10:45they are the more they will love the
- 10:46country and they no longer fight against
- 10:48one another they will have a strong
- 10:50sense of identity they will know that
- 10:53all Filipinos are
- 10:58one all
