- 0:11bad but
- 0:12why let's have a look fast fashion can
- 0:15be described as cheap trendy clothes
- 0:17in fact it's most fashion brands you
- 0:20probably know
- 0:20such as zara h m new look or brands
- 0:24available from asos or boohoo
- 0:27they all work on the same system of
- 0:28fast-paced production
- 0:30the traditional model of fashion
- 0:32production consists of different stages
- 0:34such as planning design development
- 0:38this would usually take months but not
- 0:40in the case of fast fashion
- 0:42as it works on the see now buy now
- 0:44concept
- 0:45fast fashion is well known for selling
- 0:48pieces of clothes mimicking high-end
- 0:50fashion clothes
- 0:51known as knockoffs that's why fast
- 0:53fashion brands can come up with new
- 0:55pieces so quickly
- 0:56by simply copying them fast fashion
- 1:00brands usually relocate production
- 1:02processes to countries
- 1:03such as vietnam cambodia or bangladesh
- 1:07allowing them to reduce production costs
- 1:09to a minimum
- 1:10in other words fashion retailers can buy
- 1:13more clothing for less money
- 1:15but this mass production has a
- 1:16significant impact on people's lives
- 1:19underpaid or child labor is not unusual
- 1:23more than 90 percent of fashion brands
- 1:25aren't paying their garment workers
- 1:26a living wage which means it is
- 1:28impossible for them to cover basic costs
- 1:30of living
- 1:31like food accommodation health care or
- 1:34education
- 1:35what's more garment workers in these
- 1:37factories
- 1:38so-called sweatshops are usually forced
- 1:41to work long hours
- 1:4216 hours or more 5 6 or sometimes even 7
- 1:47days a week
- 1:51fast fashion brings another problem into
- 1:53play and that's its environmental
- 1:55impact textile production contributes
- 1:58more to climate change
- 1:59than international aviation and shipping
- 2:01combined
- 2:02it is responsible for more than nine
- 2:04percent of carbon emissions globally
- 2:07using the open-loop production cycles
- 2:09results in water and land pollution
- 2:12washing solvents and dyes used in
- 2:14manufacturing
- 2:15are responsible for one-fifth of
- 2:17industrial water pollution
- 2:18in total the textile industry is
- 2:21responsible for 20 to 35
- 2:23of microplastic flows into the ocean
- 2:26just a single polyester garment can shed
- 2:28millions of microplastics which take
- 2:31over 200 years to decompose
- 2:34another problem when it comes to water
- 2:36is its usage
- 2:37let's have a look at cotton to cultivate
- 2:40just one kilogram of raw cotton
- 2:42takes around 10 000 liters of water and
- 2:44to produce one cotton t-shirt
- 2:46takes around 2 700 liters of water
- 2:50that sounds like a lot of water right
- 2:53yes 2 700 liters of water
- 2:56equal the amount of what one person
- 2:58drinks in two and a half years
- 3:00if the average person drinks around 2.5
- 3:02liters a day
- 3:04now just try to imagine how many
- 3:07t-shirts an average person has
- 3:09and more importantly how many times do
- 3:11they wear it
- 3:13in the past years eco-friendliness and
- 3:16green lifestyles
- 3:17have become a trend more and more people
- 3:21are becoming concerned about the
- 3:22environment
- 3:23and fast fashion brands are aware of
- 3:24that and that is exactly why these
- 3:27brands are coming up with more
- 3:28sustainable looking lines
- 3:30you may have heard of zara and their
- 3:32join life collection or h
- 3:33m with their conscious line but that's
- 3:36when greenwashing comes into play
- 3:38greenwashing practices simply try to
- 3:40make the brand look more environmentally
- 3:42friendly than it is
- 3:43however there are a few ways to spot
- 3:46greenwashing marketing
- 3:47first pay attention to the choice of
- 3:49words you will hear and see buzzwords
- 3:51such as green eco-friendly sustainable
- 3:54or conscious
- 3:56but what do these words even mean right
- 3:59how do we know if the brand is or is not
- 4:01sustainable
- 4:02well there are some tips to help you
- 4:06one materials natural materials are a
- 4:10good starting point
- 4:12in general materials like organic cotton
- 4:14linen
- 4:15hemp tencel and bamboo are better than
- 4:18polyester
- 4:19or acrylic two transparency
- 4:23truly sustainable brands will most
- 4:25likely be transparent about their
- 4:26materials and how they are sourced
- 4:29three green icons is it too much green
- 4:33might be a good idea to double check

- 4:45are some of the most prevalent ones in
