  14. 0:43fantasy the fantasy a fantasy to ward
  15. 0:47off a special evil the term midlife
  16. 0:50crisis was coined in 1965 by the late
  17. 0:53Canadian psychoanalyst Elliot jocks and
  18. 0:56it started with fear they were afraid of
  19. 1:00Aging they felt that their life was over
  20. 1:02Margie lochman is a psychologist at
  21. 1:04brandise University in Massachusetts and
  22. 1:07a lead researcher in an ongoing study on
  23. 1:10midlife the most in-depth ever in the
  24. 1:13United States they realized they had not
  25. 1:16accomplished all their goals and had not
  26. 1:18been able to realize their dreams and
  27. 1:20they thought it was too late that there
  28. 1:21was really no more time to do this I'm
  29. 1:23here today to again
  30. 1:25apologize the concept is so widely
  31. 1:27accepted it's often blamed for Men
  32. 1:30Behaving Badly from weer to
  33. 1:33Schwarzenegger to Clinton actually my
  34. 1:36wife and I are separated oh well what I
  35. 1:40mean is separated in the sense that she
  36. 1:42went away for the summer and from the
  37. 1:43sevene rich to Moon struck it's one of
  38. 1:47Hollywood's go-to themes why do men
  39. 1:50chase
  40. 1:52women
  41. 1:55nerves I think it's because they fear
  42. 1:58death but as it turns out our
  43. 2:01assumptions are wrong surprisingly
  44. 2:04Margie lockman's research shows that
  45. 2:06very few men perhaps only 10 to 12% have
  46. 2:10anything approaching a crisis your
  47. 2:13numbers would suggest that the vast
  48. 2:15majority of people take this in stride I
  49. 2:17would say they do uh 85 90% yeah we find
  50. 2:22a lot of things going on in midlife that
  51. 2:25are very positive the top really the top
  52. 2:28of their game in a sense in the
  53. 2:30workforce in their family so in some
  54. 2:32ways I think midlife should be
  55. 2:34Associated more with competence and
  56. 2:36confidence um than a crisis those facts
  57. 2:40aside it's the men who are suffering who
  58. 2:42are driving the discussion Their Fear is
  59. 2:45real and that's driving a booming
  60. 2:48business promising to reverse midlife
  61. 2:51aging how does this 70-year-old doctor
  62. 2:54had the body of a 30-year-old people
  63. 2:56look at me and they
  64. 2:58say you you look amazing from the neck
  65. 3:01down and I tell them that no one is more
  66. 3:04amazed than I am Dr Jeffrey life runs a
  67. 3:08clinic in Las Vegas and he thinks he has
  68. 3:11the answer
  69. 3:13testosterone this is what the the
  70. 3:15patient would get this vial of
  71. 3:16testosterone and then you draw that out
  72. 3:18into a syringe and inject it into the
  73. 3:21muscle of your leg once a week once a
  74. 3:24week most men's testosterone level peaks
  75. 3:28in their late 20s and declines steadily
  76. 3:31about 1% a year after age 30 doctor life
  77. 3:35says stop the decline and you regain
  78. 3:38your youth well I mean I do things today
  79. 3:41at age 72 that I would never have even
  80. 3:44considered doing 10 years ago I'm
  81. 3:46working on my black belt in Taekwondo I
  82. 3:48lift weights five mornings a week with
  83. 3:50Rod my trainer I wrote a book I mean
  84. 3:53these are things that I could not have
  85. 3:55done 10 15 years ago his body is his
  86. 3:58proof what he was like in his 50s and
  87. 4:01where he is today after 8 years taking
  88. 4:05testosterone however we Define midlife
  89. 4:08let's just throw out there's are
  90. 4:1050ish um how many men at that age do you
  91. 4:14think need the kind of therapy that you
  92. 4:16offer which would include the correcting
  93. 4:19testosterone deficiencies exercise
  94. 4:21nutrition
  95. 4:23supplementation 100% everybody everybody
  96. 4:26and Dr life isn't alone testosterone has
  97. 4:29gone mainstream jumping from ads in the
  98. 4:32back of men's magazines to Slick
  99. 4:35commercials on network television could
  100. 4:37be an easily treatable condition called
  101. 4:39Low tea the result sales of testosterone
  102. 4:43products have shot up as if they're on
  103. 4:46steroids from 550 million in 2006 to 1.3
  104. 4:52billion in
  105. 4:532010 the TV ad says your golf swing will
  106. 4:56get better your sex life will get better
  107. 4:59what do you
  108. 5:00say this it wasn't testosterone even a
  109. 5:03few years ago it was melatonin then it
  110. 5:07was
  111. 5:07DHEA back in the 1800s it was ground up
  112. 5:10goat testicles and this is goes goes
  113. 5:13back hundreds of years with the whole
  114. 5:14notion of the Fountain of Youth Dr
  115. 5:17Thomas pearls is an expert on Aging at
  116. 5:19the Boston Medical Center he sees not
  117. 5:22the benefits of testosterone but a
  118. 5:24laundry list of dangerous side effects
  119. 5:28there was a very high-profile New
  120. 5:29England Journal of Medicine article that
  121. 5:31found a very high rate four times
  122. 5:34greater rate for cardiovascular events
  123. 5:36things like arhythmia atrial
  124. 5:38fibrillation heart attack his
  125. 5:40prescription to reverse a midlife
  126. 5:42slowdown do it the oldfashioned way go
  127. 5:46to the gym and just work on the weights
  128. 5:49look at all the people out there on the
  129. 5:51weights I would wager that the vast
  130. 5:52majority of them are not taking any
  131. 5:54drugs and they're feeling great I know
  132. 5:57so many people who don't call it a
  133. 6:00midlife crisis they call it an
  134. 6:02opportunity I have to keep
  135. 6:04moving or I catch up with myself if that
  136. 6:07makes any sense uh and I caught up with
  137. 6:11myself at that point yeah and and I
  138. 6:14didn't like me come on we're
  139. 6:18normal comparatively
  140. 6:21normal opportunity is exactly what
  141. 6:24comedian Ray Romano was looking for at
  142. 6:27age 47 when he found himself suddenly a
  143. 6:31drift you know Raymond was 9 years and
  144. 6:33before that I was stand up for 11 years
  145. 6:35it was 20 years of of of this
  146. 6:39creative uh outlet that I had and all of
  147. 6:41a sudden there was nothing and I found
  148. 6:45myself wondering what the hell am I
  149. 6:47going to do with the rest of my life
  150. 6:49what what have I done so Romano along
  151. 6:52with his friend and producer Mike Roy
  152. 6:54decided to explore their own changing
  153. 6:57lives on television okay right here
  154. 7:00right here it's not blurry anymore but
  155. 7:01now it's too far away that I can't read
  156. 7:03it I'm never going to know what it says
  157. 7:05on a ketchup bottle it's ketchup what
  158. 7:06are you going to know about it they call
  159. 7:08their current show co-starring Scott

  167. 7:30a way I I it's I kind of liken it to
  168. 7:33it's like your second teenagerhood
  169. 7:35uh your brain is go is processing a lot
  170. 7:39of information they say the show has
  171. 7:41helped all of them gain A New
  172. 7:44Perspective when I went to get my
  173. 7:47checkup at age 55 my doctor said well
  174. 7:50you're just getting welcome to the
  175. 7:52second half of your life and I'm I you
  176. 7:54know I'm thinking
  177. 7:55110 wow you know that's kind of maybe a
  178. 7:58real solid reality I'm thinking well
  179. 8:00that's a lot of time bacula is on to
  180. 8:02something say researchers who suggest
  181. 8:05contentment not crisis is the true
  182. 8:08reality of midlife for most men it it
  183. 8:11takes a while before you accept that
  184. 8:14you're not going to be able to do this
  185. 8:15anymore you're not as young as this you
  186. 8:17you know you're women aren't going to be
  187. 8:20as attracted to you anymore you know
  188. 8:22that's just the way life is and and
  189. 8:24there is you know contentment to be had
  190. 8:27at that age you just got to it takes
  191. 8:29adjustment and what's ahead can look
  192. 8:32pretty good says psychologist Margie
  193. 8:35lochman we don't have to assume that um
  194. 8:38you are stuck and that it's just all
  195. 8:40downhill from here and in many ways we
  196. 8:43can say that um those who are in the
  197. 8:45middle are really they're in the
  198. 8:46driver's seat um and I don't necessarily
  199. 8:49mean in a sports car just remember
