10. 0:20this whistleblower says facebook can
11. 0:22change but says it cannot do it on its
12. 0:25own
13. 0:27i'm here today because i believe
14. 0:28facebook's products harm children
15. 0:30stoke division and weaken our democracy
16. 0:33during opening remarks francis haugen
17. 0:36sounding the alarm saying facebook knew
18. 0:38about the harm it was causing but placed
19. 0:41profits over safety she pointed to
20. 0:43facebook's own research that reveals its
21. 0:46products misinformation led to the
22. 0:48january 6th capital riots and covet
23. 0:51vaccine distrust she even claimed
24. 0:54facebook makes young girls and women
25. 0:56feel bad about their bodies the dangers
26. 0:59of engagement-based ranking are that
27. 1:01facebook knows
28. 1:03that content that elicits an extreme
29. 1:06reaction from you is more likely to get
30. 1:07a click a comment or re-share haugen
31. 1:10worked as a product manager on
32. 1:11facebook's civic information team
33. 1:14claiming the social media giant has been
34. 1:16abusing privacy some on the senate
35. 1:18subcommittee said yesterday facebook had
36. 1:21a platform outage but the company has
37. 1:23been having a principal outage for far
38. 1:25too long if they won't act
39. 1:29and if big tech won't act
40. 1:31congress has to intervene
41. 1:34i've been arguing for some time that it
42. 1:36is time for congress to act facebook's
43. 1:39global head of safety says the company
44. 1:41wants congress to give more regulation
45. 1:44and is working to tackle the spread of
46. 1:46harmful content we do think that
47. 1:48regulation is important so there is
48. 1:50somebody outside of us
49. 1:52validating validating our work
50. 1:56haugan says facebook's actions have been
51. 1:58disastrous and she decided to come forth
52. 2:01because she believes the public deserves
53. 2:03nothing short of the truth
