- 0:01hill from a facebook whistleblower she
- 0:03says the company puts profits above
- 0:05everything else including the safety of
- 0:07children cbs 2's dick brennan here now
- 0:09with more on today's testimony dick
- 0:11maurice and christine frances haugen was
- 0:13a facebook product manager who worked
- 0:15there for two years before leaving in
- 0:16may she leaked information to 60 minutes
- 0:18claiming facebook knows how detrimental
- 0:21their platforms forms are to young
- 0:23people and today she made her case to
- 0:25congress
- 0:26but i'm here today because i believe
- 0:27facebook's products harm children stoke
- 0:30division and weaken our democracy
- 0:32whistleblower francis haugen says
- 0:34facebook knows how to make its platform
- 0:36safe but it won't because it costs them
- 0:38big money and she says children suffer
- 0:41kids who are bullied on instagram the
- 0:43bullying follows them home it follows
- 0:45them into their bedrooms the last thing
- 0:48they see before they go to bed at night
- 0:49is someone being cruel to them or the
- 0:50first thing they see in the morning is
- 0:52someone being cruel to them haugen says
- 0:54the sites are most troublesome for
- 0:56teenagers and they examine what they
- 0:57call rates of problematic use by age
- 1:01that peaked with 14 year olds it's just
- 1:03like cigarettes teenagers don't have
- 1:05good self-regulation they say explicitly
- 1:09i feel bad when i use instagram and yet
- 1:11i can't stop
- 1:12and haugen claims facebook's algorithms
- 1:14can quickly lead teenagers from safe
- 1:16subjects onto much more harmful ones all
- 1:19the way from just something innocent
- 1:21like healthy recipes to anorexia
- 1:24promoting content in a statement
- 1:26facebook said in part we don't agree
- 1:28with her characterization on the many
- 1:30issues she testified about the majority
- 1:32of young people on instagram are having
- 1:35a good experience and that is borne out
- 1:37by the documents that were stolen
- 1:39including
- 1:40the instagram youth survey of about 40
- 1:43instagram users and facebook denies the
- 1:45site had any responsibility for the
- 1:47january 6th attack on the capitol
- 1:49because it allowed misinformation on the
- 1:51election to proliferate on the site
- 1:53responsibility for january 6 lies with
- 1:55those who broke the law and those in
- 1:57politics and elsewhere who incited them
- 2:00but lawmakers on both sides of the aisle
- 2:02were united in condemning facebook ceo
- 2:04mark zuckerberg and vowed to enact
- 2:06reforms
- 2:07here's my message for mark zuckerberg
- 2:10your time of invading our privacy
- 2:14promoting toxic content and preying on
- 2:16children and teens is over
- 2:20but facebook for its part threw things
- 2:22back onto congress saying that it's time
- 2:24for it to act they say they should not
- 2:27expect the industry to make societal
- 2:29decisions that belong to legislators to
- 2:31be continued christina marie yeah
