- 0:00you have said numerous times that uh
- 0:04these documents point to Facebook not
- 0:06doing anything about its platforms
- 0:09promoting um misinformation and hate
- 0:12could you give us some examples of how
- 0:14this work and what Facebook isn't doing
- 0:16I want to be clear it's not that
- 0:18Facebook isn't doing anything Facebook
- 0:20has pointed out they've invested
- 0:22something like $16 billion I think it's
- 0:24$13 billion since two since 2016 on
- 0:28issues around safety and integrity but
- 0:30the question is how much should they be
- 0:32spending is that is the amount of
- 0:34spending that they have today enough and
- 0:36Facebook's documents are point to over
- 0:37and over again that there are many many
- 0:40solutions many of them not even content
- 0:42based that would make the platform safer
- 0:44for everyone one of the core things that
- 0:47I'm I'm trying to draw attention to is
- 0:48the underinvestment in languages that
- 0:50aren't English they know that they face
- 0:53most regulatory scrutiny in the United
- 0:55States and so they try the hardest to
- 0:57keep the platform nice in the US
- 1:00unfortunately the most fragile places in
- 1:02the world are also the most diverse when
- 1:04it comes to
- 1:05languages Facebook's current strategy
- 1:07for safety is that Mark has said Mark
- 1:10Zuckerberg has said engagement based
- 1:13ranking is dangerous because people are
- 1:15drawn to extreme content but don't worry
- 1:18AI will save us the problem is that
- 1:21strategy requires us to build those AI
- 1:23systems over and over and over again in
- 1:25each language for the platform to be
- 1:27safe and right now Facebook is not doing
- 1:29that not is it just a question of
- 1:32investment or what should Facebook do to
- 1:35address the issues should it change the
- 1:37algorithm what Solutions do you
- 1:39have I'm a big proponent that you know
- 1:42if we rolled back the clock and looked
- 1:44at what Facebook was like in 2008 2009
- 1:46like before we had an AI telling us what
- 1:49to focus on we had a Facebook that was
- 1:51about our family and friends Facebook
- 1:54has said we can't do time based ranking
- 1:57you won't like it yeah if you took the
- 1:59current Facebook today and switched it
- 2:01over to a world where the AI wasn't
- 2:03focusing our attention it's true you
- 2:04wouldn't like it but if we redesign the
- 2:06platforms with the idea that they should
- 2:08be human scale not Mega scale with an AI
- 2:12focusing us around those would be
- 2:14platforms that were about our family and
- 2:16friends we could enjoy them and they
- 2:17would be a lot safer and um you're now
- 2:20in Europe you're speaking to politicians
- 2:22governments you're going to be speaking
- 2:24at the European Parliament um when it
- 2:26comes to raining in Facebook meta um and
- 2:29being
- 2:30um what do you expect from Europe I'm
- 2:33hoping that Europe will stand up for
- 2:35consumers because right now consumers
- 2:38don't know if what's in the can is
- 2:40what's on the label and what we see from
- 2:42the the disclosures that I've made is
- 2:44that Facebook is misconstruing what
- 2:46their product is the European Union has
- 2:49an opportunity to enforce transparency
- 2:52on the Platforms in a privacy sensitive
- 2:54way and they have the ability to have
- 2:57regulatory muscle to make Facebook
- 2:59disclose what are challenges it believes
- 3:02exist with the platforms right now
- 3:04people can't make informed choices on
- 3:06whether or not to use these things and I
- 3:08feel like that is um that degrades our
- 3:10autonomy because we don't have the
- 3:12information to make good choices and
- 3:13that violates our dignity how much
- 3:16responsibility does Facebook CEO Mark
- 3:18Zuckerberg have when we look at um the
- 3:20revelations that you made and the issues
- 3:23that uh Facebook is dealing with I
- 3:26really don't like to criticize
- 3:27individuals because I really think that
- 3:29this is a syst iic problem this is about
- 3:30incentives and about structure uh
- 3:32structures leading to bad consequences
- 3:35but in the end face Mark Zuckerberg has
- 3:3854% of all the voting shares for
- 3:40Facebook he is probably one of the most
- 3:42powerful unilateral leaders in the
- 3:45world at the end of the day he is
- 3:47responsible for the system he built and
- 3:50he has the ability to change that system
- 3:52and so given that he would rather shift
- 3:54the conversation to video games when
- 3:56people are dying as the result of the
- 3:58actions of Facebook I think that means
- 4:00that Mark Mark needs to um either say no
- 4:04I need a reset we need to change or he
- 4:07needs to let someone else do that why
- 4:09was it important for you to come forward
- 4:11with this I saw a pattern of behavior
- 4:14where I believed uh there was no chance
- 4:17the Facebook would be able to solve
- 4:19these problems in isolation that there
- 4:20were too many organizational pressures
- 4:22the incentives were were
- 4:24misaligned and I knew that if I didn't
- 4:27do something and I saw what I feared was
- 4:30going to happen continue to unfurl and
- 4:33like Ethiopia announced a state of
- 4:35Crisis yesterday because the situation
- 4:36there has decayed so much um I knew I
- 4:40could never live with myself if I
- 4:41watched you know 10 million 20 million
- 4:43people over the next 20 years die
- 4:45because of violence that was facilitated
- 4:47by social media and so people often ask
- 4:50me am I stressed right now like you
- 4:51you're talking to all these people like
- 4:53it's such a whirlwind and compared to
- 4:55living with that secret like everything
- 4:58feels very calm right now because I know
- 5:00this is not my problem anymore it's a
- 5:03thing that we together can solve
