- 0:15Dear viewers, peace, mercy, and
- 0:17blessings of God be upon you. In this
- 0:20episode, we will talk about the
- 0:21Almighty's saying, "None touch it
- 0:23except the purified." We will not
- 0:25repeat what the ancients said. No, but
- 0:27we will bring new evidence from within
- 0:30the Quran that...Our forefathers did
- 0:33not notice at the time. And this is
- 0:36natural. Because they did not know the
- 0:39rules that the Almighty set. And the
- 0:41method by which God perfected the Book.
- 0:44But the flaw is that we still argue
- 0:46about these things to this day in the
- 0:4821st century AD. That is where the flaw
- 0:51lies. Therefore, we will bring new
- 0:53evidence according to the method by
- 0:55which God perfected the Book,
- 0:57especially the Arabic tongue. In order
- 1:01to avoid the Arabic [grammar] that led
- 1:03our fathers to say things that cannot
- 1:05be applied to the Book of God. Because
- 1:09the Quran has its own rules. And these
- 1:12rules are what prevail over the rules
- 1:14that humans set for the Arabic language
- 1:17. This is what we will demonstrate in
- 1:19this episode. To determine whether God
- 1:22Almighty is speaking about this Mushaf
- 1:24(copy of the Quran) in our hands? Or is
- 1:28He speaking about the Preserved Book
- 1:30that none touch except the purified?
- 1:33This is what we will demonstrate in
- 1:35this episode, God willing. As I said,
- 1:48the first thing we will start with is
- 1:50the Arabic tongue, not the tongue of
- 1:53the Arabs. And the rules that God
- 1:56Almighty set in the Quran cannot be
- 1:59subjected to the rules set by the Arabs
- 2:02. Why? Because there are Imams who
- 2:06relied on the rules set by the Arabs in
- 2:08the Arabic tongue, which made them
- 2:10disagree with the rest of the Imams,
- 2:13even though they were correct. We
- 2:17cannot rely on the rule he relied upon.
- 2:21To prove that God is speaking about the
- 2:24Preserved Book, not the Quran. And for
- 2:26this. I will bring what Imam Malik, may
- 2:30God have mercy on him, and Imam Ibn
- 2:33Hazm, may God have mercy on him, said.
- 2:37Imam Malik said that "None touch it
- 2:39except the purified" means the Quran,
- 2:42meaning no one who is not pure has the
- 2:45right to touch this Mushaf. But Imam
- 2:51Ibn Hazm brought a linguistic rule in
- 2:53the tongue of the Arabs, and it is
- 2:55correct. He said regarding "None touch
- 2:59it"(la yamassuhu). The pronoun "hu"(it)
- 3:02refers to the nearest noun. And what is
- 3:05the nearest noun? It is the Preserved
- 3:08Book. Because God said. Almighty, "
- 3:11Indeed, it is a noble Quran in a
- 3:13Preserved Book, none touch it." So the
- 3:17pronoun "hu" refers to the Preserved
- 3:20Book, not the Quran, because the Book
- 3:23is the closest noun to the verb "touch.
- 3:25" And Ibn Hazm is linguistically
- 3:29correct. Meaning the pronoun refers to
- 3:33the nearest noun, not the distant noun.
- 3:36And as I said, the nearest noun is the
- 3:38Book. "Hidden." If we wanted to
- 3:40attribute the pronoun "it" to the Noble
- 3:43Quran, God would have had to say: "It
- 3:46is a Noble Quran, in a Book hidden,
- 3:48none touch it except the purified." The
- 3:52"wa"(and) suggests that the Quran—
- 3:54which is in a hidden book—is not
- 3:56touched except by the purified. Let me
- 4:00give an example: "I entered a school
- 4:02with a library that has seven doors."
- 4:05Here, the pronoun would refer to the
- 4:08nearest antecedent. What is the nearest
- 4:11? The library. "I entered a school with
- 4:14a library in it that has seven doors."
- 4:17If I wanted to attribute the doors to
- 4:20the school, I would have to say: "I
- 4:22entered a school with a library in it,
- 4:24and it has seven doors." Meaning, in
- 4:28addition to the library, the school has
- 4:30seven doors. However, if we rely on
- 4:34this linguistic rule—even if it is
- 4:36correct—we cannot apply it to the
- 4:38Book of God, or we will fall into error
- 4:41. Among the examples that prove what I
- 4:45say, and how this rule leads to error,
- 4:48is the example from many in Surah
- 4:50Al-A'raf: "It is He who created you
- 4:52from one soul and created from it its
- 4:55mate that he might dwell in security
- 4:57with her. And when he covers her, she
- 5:01carries a light burden and continues
- 5:03therein. And when it becomes heavy,
- 5:07they both supplicate to Allah, their
- 5:09Lord, 'If You should give us a good [
- 5:11child], we will surely be among the
- 5:13grateful.' But when He gives them a
- 5:17good [child], they ascribe partners to
- 5:20Him." The pronoun here is for the child
- 5:23because it is the nearest antecedent,
- 5:26implying that they made partners for
- 5:28this good child. But this is impossible
- 5:31. Because God is speaking about Himself
- 5:33, Exalted is He. That is why this rule
- 5:35cannot be relied upon. Why? Because we
- 5:38must read what follows it. God says: "
- 5:41But when He gives them a good [child],
- 5:43they ascribe partners to Him in what He
- 5:45has given them." Who gave them? God.
- 5:48Exalted is God above what they
- 5:50associate with Him. Thus, it becomes
- 5:52clear that the rule brought by Ibn Hazm
- 5:55is linguistically correct, but it
- 5:57cannot be applied to the Book of God,
- 6:00the Almighty. Because the Book of God
- 6:02has its own rules and a precise method
- 6:04of discourse. We have another example;
- 6:07for instance, the Almighty said in
- 6:09Surah Al-Fath: "That you [people] may
- 6:12believe in Allah and His Messenger and
- 6:14honor him and respect him and exalt Him
- 6:17morning and afternoon." How? Is God the
- 6:21one we will honor and respect? His
- 6:24Messenger. But will we exalt His
- 6:27Messenger? No, but why? Because in the
- 6:30tongue of the Arabs, when we say: "If
- 6:33you see Zayd and Amr, follow their
- 6:36words." This is the language of the
- 6:38Arabs. But God, the Almighty, made His
- 6:40verses precise. When He says "Allah and
- 6:43His Messenger," it does not mean the
- 6:45two of them together. It means God and
- 6:48what Muhammad conveyed, hence, His
- 6:50Messenger. That is why God, the
- 6:52Almighty, said: "And whoever disobeys
- 6:54Allah and His Messenger transgresses
- 6:56His limits." And not "their limits."
- 6:59And I explained this in my episode. So
- 7:02here, you honor and respect the
- 7:04Messenger. But this Messenger, who
- 7:08commanded them? To honor and respect
- 7:10him? God, the Almighty, because he is
- 7:12the Messenger, not the Prophet. That is
- 7:14why He said: "and exalt Him morning and
- 7:15afternoon," which has nothing to do
- 7:17with the rules humans have set. We will
- 7:20bring an example to prove what we have
- 7:22said about this verse, for God said in
- 7:23Surah Al-A'raf: "Those who follow the
- 7:25Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom
- 7:27they find written in what they have of
- 7:28the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins
- 7:30upon them what is right and forbids
- 7:31them what is wrong and makes lawful for
- 7:33them the good things and prohibits for
- 7:35them the evil and relieves them of
- 7:36their burden and the shackles which
- 7:38were upon them. So they who have
- 7:41believed in him, honored him, and
- 7:42supported him...""...and followed the
- 7:44light which was sent down with him.""
- 7:47The light which was sent down" means
- 7:48they followed what God said. Not what
- 7:51the Prophet says. And likewise, when
- 7:54God says "the Messenger," He means the
- 7:57official spokesperson on behalf of God,
- 7:59the Almighty. That is why we cannot
- 8:02rely on the rule of Ibn Hazm, may God
- 8:04have mercy on him, even though it is
- 8:06correct in the Arabic language, because
- 8:08God perfected the verses of the Quran,
- 8:10and we must study the Quran to learn
- 8:12the method by which God perfected the
- 8:14Book, using the rules set by the
- 8:16Almighty. Now we will return to the
- 8:18things our forefathers paid attention
- 8:20to. Those whose words many of us
- 8:22sanctify and bear witness to their
- 8:24knowledge. They declare as disbelievers
- 8:27everyone who disagrees with them, yet
- 8:29they do not possess this knowledge for
- 8:31which they are vouched. So, we will
- 8:34clarify the first thing that must be
- 8:36explained, which is something important
- 8:38, as I showed in the episodes of the
- 8:40Book and the Quran: when God uses the
- 8:42word "quran" in the indefinite, He does
- 8:44not mean the Mus'haf (the physical book
- 8:46), not when He speaks about this
- 8:48Mus'haf. He says "the Quran" as a
- 8:50definite noun. Meaning, one with no
- 8:53equal. But when He says "quran"(
- 8:55indefinite), He is speaking about a
- 8:57reading, not the Mus'haf. That is why
- 8:59this Mus'haf was called the Quran.
- 9:02Because the method by which the
- 9:03Messenger was taught the content of the
- 9:05message is reading. So, the Quran is
- 9:08the reading. But there is "a reading,"
- 9:11some reading. That is why the Almighty
- 9:14said: "If a Quran were used to move the
- 9:16mountains," and not "If the Quran." God
- 9:19here said it is "a noble Quran." First
- 9:22of all, God is not talking about the
- 9:24Mus'haf. He is talking about the method
- 9:27by which the Messenger was taught this
- 9:30message. Which is a reading. Through
- 9:33reading, meaning this message is a
- 9:35reading from the Preserved Book. Then
- 9:39it descended and was written on earth.
- 9:42So, the reading is what descended. And
- 9:45it was the Messenger's miracle. It is
- 9:48that he learned how to read that. He
- 9:53was the only one who could read this.
- 9:56And we will clarify this in his episode
- 9:59, God willing. So here God said: "It is
- 10:01a noble Quran in a Preserved Book."
- 10:04Meaning this reading came out of that
- 10:07Preserved Book. And God is not talking
- 10:09about the Mus'haf. He is talking about
- 10:11the reading. "None touch it except the
- 10:13purified." Naturally, He is talking
- 10:16about the Preserved Book, not the quran
- 10:18or the reading. The reading is not
- 10:21material. Even if "quran" meant the
- 10:24Mus'haf, they should have paid
- 10:25attention to the difference between "
- 10:27mass"(touching/contact) and "lams"(
- 10:29surface touching). "Mass" has nothing
- 10:33to do with "lams." And there is a huge
- 10:35difference between them. Just as God
- 10:36differentiated between the Messenger,
- 10:38the Prophet, the God, the Lord, the
- 10:39spouse, the husband, and many other
- 10:40things. But they were not paying
- 10:42attention to these things. And we must
- 10:44pay attention to these things. So, they
- 10:47did not distinguish between "mass" and
- 10:49"lams." That is why, to forbid a man
- 10:53from shaking hands with a woman, they
- 10:55relied on a Prophetic hadith that says:
- 10:58"It is better for one of you to be
- 11:00struck in the head with an iron needle
- 11:02than to touch (yamussa) a woman who is
- 11:05not lawful for him." With this hadith,
- 11:09they forbade a man from shaking hands
- 11:10with a woman. Why? Because when the
- 11:14Prophet said these things, he
- 11:15understood the Quran and distinguished
- 11:18between "lams" and "mass." If the
- 11:21Prophet were talking about shaking
- 11:23hands, he would have said, "It is
- 11:25better for him to touch (yalmusa) a
- 11:28woman," not "touch (yamussa) a woman."
- 11:31What is the difference? "Lams" is
- 11:34superficial. Superficial, material with
- 11:38material. So I here touched (lamastu)
- 11:41the Mus'haf. I touched it. And for many
- 11:45people to know, perhaps the person who
- 11:47printed this Mus'haf did not believe in
- 11:50God or the Last Day. And not only that.
- 11:52He was not pure when he printed it. And
- 11:55we took it. So what about the one who "
- 11:57lamasa"(touches superficially)? As I
- 12:01said, "lams" is superficial. It is
- 12:05material with material. That is why
- 12:08when God spoke about ablution (Wudu),
- 12:10He said in Surah Al-Ma'idah, "Or if..."
- 12:13You were ill or on a journey. Or one of
- 12:16you comes from the place of relieving
- 12:18himself. Or you have had contact with
- 12:20women. And not "mass"(intercourse). If
- 12:22He had said "massaytum," this would
- 12:24imply major ritual impurity requiring
- 12:26Ghusl. But here, He speaks about "
- 12:28mulamasah"(physical contact). The verb
- 12:30is "lamasa"(to touch). But it implies
- 12:32continuity. As we say "muqatala"(
- 12:34fighting/combat). It is not simply "
- 12:35qatl"(killing). Meaning the action is
- 12:37between two parties and lasts for some
- 12:40time. That is why He said, "Or you have
- 12:42had contact with women." Why? As I
- 12:44clarified regarding ablution. This may
- 12:46result from the discharge. Of
- 12:48pre-seminal fluid (madhy), not semen (
- 12:50maniy). Because pre-seminal fluid does
- 12:52not contain sperm. So it does not
- 12:54require a full bath for prayer. That is
- 12:56why God Almighty placed it among the
- 12:58nullifiers of ablution. Which is when
- 13:00He said, "Or one of you comes from the
- 13:01place of relieving himself, or you have
- 13:03had contact with women.""And you find
- 13:05no water, then seek clean earth." Thus,
- 13:08"lams" is superficial, and "mulamasah"
- 13:11is superficial but enduring. As for "
- 13:15mass," it is fusion, the entering of
- 13:19things into one another. Whether it is
- 13:23material with material, or non-material
- 13:26with material. Or non-material with
- 13:30non-material. Meaning always
- 13:34penetration, fusion, and the entry of
- 13:36one into the other. Examples are found
- 13:40in the Book of God Almighty. Because
- 13:42God said, "And We have certainly varied
- 13:44in this Qur'an for the people from
- 13:45every [kind of] example.""And man has
- 13:48ever been, most of anything, [prone to]
- 13:49dispute.""And We have set forth for the
- 13:51people in this Qur'an every [kind of]
- 13:53example." And we will take the examples
- 13:56that God set forth in order to. Know
- 13:58the meaning of "mass" and distinguish
- 14:01it from "lams." God Almighty said in
- 14:03Surah Al-An'am: "And those who denied
- 14:05Our signs-the punishment will touch (
- 14:07yamassuhum) them for what they used to
- 14:09disobey." Punishment is what pains us
- 14:11inside. It might be superficial, but we
- 14:15feel the pain within. It is not just a
- 14:18touch that passes by; no. It may enter
- 14:20into the human body. Likewise, God
- 14:23Almighty said in Surah Al-A'raf: "
- 14:24Indeed, those who fear God-when an
- 14:26impulse (ta'if) from Satan touches (
- 14:27massahum) them..." Satan is not...
- 14:29material. And here He speaks about an
- 14:31impulse (ta'if). A provocation. A
- 14:32whisper. These things are not material.
- 14:35They are thoughts. And thoughts are not
- 14:37material. God Almighty said in Surah
- 14:39Fussilat: "Man is not weary of
- 14:41supplication for good.""But if evil
- 14:43touches (massahu) him, he is despairing
- 14:45and hopeless." And God Almighty said in
- 14:47Surah Al-Baqarah: "There is no blame
- 14:49upon you if you divorce women while you
- 14:51have not yet touched (tamassuhunna)
- 14:52them." And not "talamasuhunna"(touched
- 14:54them superficially). Because He is
- 14:56talking about sexual intercourse. And
- 14:58intercourse involves fusion between the
- 15:01man. And the woman, the entry of the
- 15:03man's organ into the woman's organ. And
- 15:05there may be a mixing between the man's
- 15:07fluid and the woman's fluid. That is
- 15:09why God used "mass." And made the
- 15:11waiting period (Iddah) depend on it,
- 15:13not on mere touching. Therefore, when
- 15:16we understand some of the evidences,
- 15:18first, that it is the Qur'an. Meaning
- 15:21this reading which descended from the
- 15:24Preserved Tablet to Earth and was
- 15:26written on pages that are noble. Then
- 15:29He said, "In a Preserved Book; none
- 15:31touch (yamassuhu) it..." Indeed, as Ibn
- 15:33Hazm al-Zahiri said, the pronoun (hu)
- 15:35refers to the closest antecedent. But
- 15:37we have shown that this rule cannot be
- 15:39applied to the Qur'an. Because the
- 15:41Qur'an has its own rules and God's
- 15:42judgments in a specific way. That is
- 15:44why we cannot rely on this rule. Rather
- 15:47, we rely on the meaning of the word "
- 15:50mass," not "lams." It is what clarifies
- 15:53things for us. Another piece of
- 15:55information is that God Almighty could
- 15:58not have meant just touching the Quran
- 16:00like that. Why? Because He permitted
- 16:03more than just touching; He permitted
- 16:05more than just touching for those in a
- 16:07state of janaba (impurity), or for a
- 16:09menstruating woman. It is not just the
- 16:12menstruating woman, but everyone in a
- 16:14state of janaba. A menstruating woman
- 16:17is in a state of janaba, just as a man
- 16:19is when he discharges semen. God
- 16:21Almighty said in Surah An-Nisa: "O you
- 16:24who have believed, do not approach
- 16:26prayer while you are intoxicated." Here
- 16:29, God is not talking about...
- 16:30Establishing prayer, O servants of God.
- 16:32He is talking about the prayer that is
- 16:33not "established"(performed with
- 16:34movements). Remembering the verses of
- 16:36God. Remembering God. Glorifying Him (
- 16:37Tasbih). Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar
- 16:38). All these things. Everything by
- 16:40which we reach God Almighty. But we do
- 16:42not. "Establish" it, meaning we do not
- 16:45perform those movements directly. No.
- 16:48That is why He said, "O you who have
- 16:49believed, do not approach prayer while
- 16:51you are intoxicated until you know what
- 16:52you are saying." He did not say "what
- 16:54you are doing." Because in the formal
- 16:55prayer, we bow and prostrate. So we are
- 16:58indeed doing that. Then He said, "nor
- 17:00in a state of janaba, except those
- 17:02passing through, until you have washed.
- 17:04" Here He made an exception; when a
- 17:06person is in a state of janaba, He made
- 17:08an exception for them: to perform this
- 17:10(non-formal) prayer. But "passing
- 17:12through" means passing by briefly. Not,
- 17:16for example, entering a place, staying
- 17:17in seclusion, and making it a routine.
- 17:19No, passing by briefly. Meaning,
- 17:21reading some verses, seeking God’s
- 17:23forgiveness a few times, glorifying God
- 17:25a few times, while in a state of janaba
- 17:27. That is why He said, "nor in a state
- 17:30of janaba, except those passing through
- 17:33, until you have washed." Only then can
- 17:36you stay in seclusion and delve deeper
- 17:38into the prayer that is not established
- 17:40. And not the prayer that is
- 17:42established. Because the prayer that is
- 17:45established does not involve "passing
- 17:46through.""Until you have washed"—no,
- 17:49if a person is in a state of janaba,
- 17:51they cannot perform the (formal) prayer
- 17:54unless they are purified. Therefore,
- 17:57God permitted not only touching the
- 17:59Quran while in a state of janaba, but
- 18:01He also permitted reciting some verses,
- 18:03whether it is a menstruating woman or a
- 18:06man in a state of janaba, to recite
- 18:08some verses, to glorify God for a short
- 18:10time, or to seek God’s forgiveness.
- 18:13To declare God’s transcendence. All
- 18:15these things are for "those passing
- 18:17through." So, O servants of God, when
- 18:20...We rely on the way God perfected the
- 18:22verses of the Book. And we discern the
- 18:25meaning of every word. And we rely on
- 18:27the Arabic tongue in which God revealed
- 18:30the Quran. And we adhere to the method
- 18:32by which God perfected the Book. And by
- 18:34the rules He established. Almighty is
- 18:36He. We will most often be closer to the
- 18:38truth. And we will remove this argument
- 18:41, which has lasted for 14. Centuries
- 18:44past. Not because we are more
- 18:46knowledgeable than the people who lived
- 18:48for 14 centuries. But we are.
- 18:52Re-examining what the first people said
- 18:55in the first and second centuries AH,
- 18:58because after them, no one dared to
- 19:01re-examine their words, and that is why
- 19:05they relied on blind imitation, blind
- 19:08imitation, up to this day. That is why
- 19:13we will find that ignorant question
- 19:15which says: "You have come today, and
- 19:18you want to teach those who lived
- 19:20before you for 14 centuries?" We are
- 19:24not talking about those who lived after
- 19:26the second and third centuries. No, we
- 19:29are correcting the errors that were
- 19:31stated by the first person, as I said.
- 19:34As for those who came after, they only
- 19:35relayed (the information). That is why
- 19:38the jurist at the time was called a
- 19:40memorizer, not a researcher, not a
- 19:42thinker, and not a scholar. Because
- 19:46jurisprudence at that time relied on
- 19:48memorizing what the Sheikh said and
- 19:50conveying it to the people. But we do
- 19:52not just convey; we reason and
- 19:54understand. And we constrain our
- 19:56reasoning with the rules set by God
- 19:58Almighty, so that we may not be among
- 20:00the companions of the Blaze. If we had
- 20:02listened or reasoned, we would not be
- 20:04among the companions of the Blaze. And
- 20:06God is the All-Knowing, the Wise, the
- 20:07Acquainted, the Great. And may the
- 20:09peace, mercy, and blessings of God be
- 20:11upon you.
