- 0:00When I put a helmet on,
- 0:03I want to destroy Lando and I want
- 0:06to beat him and I want to
- 0:08beat Alex, beat
- 0:09Charles, beat all of them.
- 0:13I see things at 200 miles an hour at
- 0:15quite slow. I know in an F1 car I could
- 0:17text and drive.
- 0:19Hi, I'm Carlos Sainz and this is my life
- 0:21in pictures.
- 0:24Well, this is
- 0:25probably one of my first
- 0:27ever times in a in a go-kart. I'm
- 0:30probably 3 4 years old maximum and I
- 0:32remember probably being the highlight of
- 0:34the every week. We would go on Sunday to
- 0:36drive and
- 0:38it would just make me so happy.
- 0:40And yeah, just great memories from it. I
- 0:42don't think I knew how to drive. I do
- 0:44believe in talent and I believe in
- 0:47genes.
- 0:48>> Carlos Sainz's WRC career spanned 18
- 0:51years and in those 18 years, there is no
- 0:54doubt that he deserved his nickname King
- 0:56Carlos.
- 0:57>> For whatever reason I learned how to do
- 0:58donuts and I learned how to do drifts.
- 1:02And I was 2 years old. It's impossible
- 1:04my dad taught me because he was never at
- 1:06home.
- 1:07Um and I remember there's a video at
- 1:09home my dad coming back from a rally and
- 1:11suddenly seeing me do that by myself and
- 1:13him going like, "Who Who's taught him
- 1:16this?" I think that must be a cool cool
- 1:17thing as a dad.
- 1:20That's actually my first podium in um
- 1:23McLaren. This was uh 2019. It came the
- 1:26day that I expected it the least because
- 1:30I was starting last this race. The The
- 1:31day before I couldn't even contest in
- 1:33qualifying. I just thought I'm I'm
- 1:35starting last. If I can get into the top
- 1:3710, that would be a great comeback.
- 1:40But I would never expect it to to go all
- 1:42the way from last to third.
- 1:45My best race of my career, a lot of over
- 1:47good overtaking.
- 1:49I had the mindset of nothing to lose.
- 1:51This race taught me that I should often
- 1:54apply that mindset more often. I think
- 1:56that's one of the best feeling when know
- 1:57you're doing a good race and have the
- 1:59confidence to do overtaking at 200 mile
- 2:02an hour and I think that's the kind of
- 2:04flow state that every driver or every
- 2:05every athlete you want to go into.
- 2:08And you're chasing that flow state
- 2:11as often as possible.
- 2:15The speed for me is is not that
- 2:17interesting because
- 2:18I see things at 200 miles an hour
- 2:20actually going on quite slow. We have
- 2:22time to do things on our steering wheel.
- 2:25Time to think about our racing, our
- 2:27strategies. I know in an F1 car I could
- 2:30text and drive. I know
- 2:32like how much in control I am of the
- 2:34situation. But uh
- 2:36on the road, never text and drive and be
- 2:39respectful to everyone around you.
- 2:42Smooth Operator is something I started
- 2:44singing on the radio once after a good
- 2:47race in McLaren.
- 2:48>> Do you think that was a
- 2:50smooth operator?
- 2:53>> [laughter]
- 2:54>> Smooth
- 2:56operator operator.
- 2:58>> It's a song that for whatever reason had
- 3:00been stuck on my head for that whole
- 3:02weekend of that race.
- 3:04And I was whistling it or and people
- 3:06around me were like, "You're singing
- 3:07Smooth Operator?" Yeah, I'm singing
- 3:08smooth I don't know why. I had a really
- 3:10good race, a good comeback again and I
- 3:12sang Smooth Operator on the radio as a
- 3:13joke to my engineers that have heard me
- 3:15sing it all weekend. Fans loved it and I
- 3:17just sing it only
- 3:20when I've done something very special.
- 3:21Whenever I have a really really really
- 3:23good race, not a good race, it has to be
- 3:25really really good, I will sing a Smooth
- 3:27Operator on the radio.
- 3:29Another good friend, Lando.
- 3:31We had a lot of fun together when I was
- 3:33driving in McLaren.
- 3:35We again
- 3:36formed our relationship of respect and
- 3:39and also friendship. We we tend to have
- 3:42a lot of fun like our sense of humor
- 3:44match.
- 3:50It's just scary.
- 3:52EVER since we remain good friends and
- 3:55we play a lot of golf together. We
- 3:58we play paddles together. We do a lot of
- 4:00plans together.
- 4:01And I guess some is a guy that I really
- 4:04respect. A guy that I enjoy spending my
- 4:07time with and yeah, even if we are
- 4:09rivals on track, we know we
- 4:11we can also be good friends out of it.
- 4:13>> He's got the bare golf score right now.
- 4:14>> He's still catching up.
- 4:15>> Lando Norris is the new world champion
- 4:18and he's
- 4:19>> I was happy for him to win that
- 4:20championship. I think he's deserved it.
- 4:23We are extremely competitive and when I
- 4:24put a helmet on, I want to destroy Lando
- 4:27and I want to
- 4:29beat him and I want to
- 4:31beat Alex, beat
- 4:32Charles, beat all of them and
- 4:35when I'm driving, I I
- 4:37I don't see Lando in front of me or I
- 4:38don't see I just see a Ferrari or
- 4:41McLaren and I just know I need to
- 4:43overtake him.
- 4:44But it is true that when you take off
- 4:46the helmet, you can see things really in
- 4:47relative, you know, not maybe with
- 4:50the pressure of having the helmet on and
- 4:52and racing for
- 4:54racing to death like we we do.
- 4:58In this picture, you see obviously me
- 5:00just being
- 5:02had surgery from appendicitis. I think
- 5:04it was not so much the appendicitis
- 5:06itself and having to miss a race.
- 5:09I think it's more the moment that it
- 5:10came in. I think it had just been
- 5:13announced that
- 5:15Lewis Hamilton would replace me in in
- 5:16Ferrari. I had just done probably one of
- 5:18my best season starts, finishing third
- 5:22in Bahrain and
- 5:24and driving really well all the
- 5:25beginning of the year and suddenly, if
- 5:27it wasn't enough during the winter with
- 5:28those bad news, on top of that,
- 5:31this appendicitis had to come and
- 5:34and that made me miss a race, the
- 5:36effects that that has in a championship
- 5:37battle, I mean like
- 5:40the world has been a bit against me the
- 5:42last few months. The good thing is 10
- 5:45days later,
- 5:46this probably gives me the greed and
- 5:48passion and the will to to come back
- 5:50from this and
- 5:52yeah, I came back with a win.
- 5:53>> What a comeback. A Ferrari 1-2 headed by
- 5:57Carlos Sainz.
- 5:59>> That's the most proud I felt as an
- 6:01athlete and as a human probably in my
- 6:03life.
- 6:05My dog's name is Piñón and he
- 6:08he's a very very
- 6:11active hyperactive dog. He He lives in
- 6:14the countryside. So I he loves running
- 6:17around hunting little birds, little
- 6:19rabbits, or whatever he has in front of
- 6:21him. He reminds me a bit of me because
- 6:23I'm always running around.
- 6:26I always need to be doing something. I
- 6:28always need to be playing paddle, golf,
- 6:29cycling.
- 6:30And I think we have matching
- 6:32personalities which in the end they say
- 6:33you know that the dog in me and then
- 6:35ends up always matching the
- 6:37the owner and good hair, good beard.
- 6:40Um
- 6:42yeah, I'm very hyperactive. That's the
- 6:43way I would summarize Piñón.
- 6:45Is the real side of me probably the most
- 6:47real is
- 6:48in the end we all have our loved ones
- 6:50and part of my loved ones is my dog for
- 6:52sure.
- 6:54This guy is Charles Leclerc, my
- 6:58ex-teammate in Ferrari.
- 7:00>> One and two, three.
- 7:02>> Carlos Sainz leads home his teammate.
- 7:04>> He definitely deserves that victory.
- 7:06>> Four amazing years together in Ferrari
- 7:08where we
- 7:10had some great racing, some great
- 7:11battles, but most importantly a lot of
- 7:14good quality time together getting to
- 7:16know each other. We were flying back
- 7:18together from a race back into Monaco
- 7:20and our plane had to had to be diverted.
- 7:22Kind of okay to land,
- 7:25but he said no way. Like if there's any
- 7:27kind of 1% risk of the storm and and I
- 7:30said to him, "If you say to the pilot we
- 7:32divert, I drive the car home." He said,
- 7:34"Okay, deal."
- 7:36Little did I know when we landed that
- 7:37the only car available was this van that
- 7:39wouldn't go above 70 mile an hour.
- 7:42>> I thought
- 7:44he couldn't get anywhere else.
- 7:46But
- 7:52>> Look at you.
- 7:53>> I don't think [laughter] anyone would
- 7:54have expected two Ferrari Formula 1
- 7:57drivers
- 7:58driving this van.
- 8:00With all our luggage in the back, it was
- 8:03Honestly, you see the van from the
- 8:05outside it was quite a funny funny
- 8:06scenes.
- 8:08It's just celebrating with my team, the
- 8:10team that supported me along the way
- 8:12through our Yeah, that
- 8:14tricky start to the year. We were all
- 8:16like, "Why is this all of these things
- 8:17happening to us?" Like
- 8:19we're doing things well. The car is
- 8:20quick. I'm quick. I'm super fast with
- 8:22this car. Since the result is
- 8:25sometimes it's strategy, sometimes it's
- 8:26bad luck, sometimes it's reliability,
- 8:28sometimes was maybe my mistake, but it
- 8:30was not clicking. And we were all like,
- 8:33"But it will come."
- 8:351 2 3 4 5 6 7 races and it still doesn't
- 8:38come.
- 8:39You start to feel the pressure, but
- 8:40suddenly it came and when it came, it
- 8:42came
- 8:43in a more spectacular manner than than I
- 8:46ever thought it would be. As long as you
- 8:48believe in the fact that you're doing
- 8:52everything in your power to make things
- 8:54work, and you need to stay put. My
- 8:55experience tells me that it eventually
- 8:57ends up happening. Fortune in the end
- 8:59favors the ones that work hard.
- 9:04It's the second year in a row that I
- 9:05attend
- 9:07the premiere of the film festival. It's
- 9:09a very
- 9:10Yeah, honestly good moment.
- 9:12I never knew how I was going to feel in
- 9:14those environments, but
- 9:16Pharrell always made me feel
- 9:18super comfortable and
- 9:20they just Yeah, received me with open
- 9:22arms and with the rest of the
- 9:24ambassadors, we just have a great time.
- 9:27Different kind of suit, but a suit that
- 9:28I like wearing, to be honest. A
- 9:30combination between classic and modern
- 9:32gentleman, but always gentleman, and I
- 9:33think a suit
- 9:35always fits well on a man. It's a bit of
- 9:37a stigma
- 9:38on on men that
- 9:40maybe they don't talk too much about
- 9:42skin care or her routine. You don't hear
- 9:45many men talking about it. And I think
- 9:47telling them with my close friends who's
- 9:50doing it and you're like,
- 9:52you've been hydrating your face or
- 9:53you've been doing this and
- 9:55and they look at you like, how do you
- 9:57know? It's like, cuz you can tell. You
- 9:59can tell who who takes a bit more care
- 10:00of of of themselves, no? And
- 10:03you do I think also. And I think
- 10:06there is absolutely no no issue, no
- 10:08problem with with that.
