- 0:00I am Celgrini and welcome to the Sunken
- 0:02Temple. The Temple of the Virgin of
- 0:15Sorrows, better known as the sunken
- 0:17temple, was built in a town with a
- 0:18great misfortune. People were starving,
- 0:21the fields were not growing, and the
- 0:23livestock were not living long enough.
- 0:25And why was that? Well, the town was
- 0:27running out of water.
- 0:28Hello, how's it going? I am Andrés
- 0:29from Aventura Hal, Guanajuato. Today we
- 0:31are at the temple, and well, we have
- 0:33been dedicated to giving this tour for
- 0:356 years, and we have obtained relevant
- 0:37information based on anecdotes told to
- 0:39us by all the townspeople, the
- 0:41fishermen, and others. It is
- 0:43colloquially known as the sunken temple
- 0:44, but that's wrong because if you look,
- 0:46right now it is not sunken. Its
- 0:47original name, its true name, is the
- 0:49Temple of the Virgin of Sorrows.
- 0:53Outfit for exploring a sunken temple
- 0:56and a city that was sacrificed to
- 0:58provide drinking water to another city,
- 1:00and the only thing that survived was a
- 1:02temple. I feel like I'm going to the
- 1:06Atlantis of Mexico.
- 1:08The houses, the lands, and the temple
- 1:10were intentionally flooded. The
- 1:12inhabitants were displaced and
- 1:14everything ended up underwater as a
- 1:16necessary sacrifice. And well, beneath
- 1:18this great dam, not only did the ruins
- 1:20of this town remain, but the story of a
- 1:22priest also stands out, who decided to
- 1:24stay and drown rather than leave this
- 1:26sacred place. Over the years, ancient
- 1:29coins, buried objects, and human
- 1:31remains began to appear within the
- 1:32temple walls. Since then, there has
- 1:35been a question: does the sunken temple
- 1:37really hide a treasure for which the
- 1:39priest lost his life so that no one
- 1:41would find it? Well, we are arriving at
- 1:43the temple now. This temple, from what
- 1:46I researched—correct me if I'm wrong
- 1:49—is a temple from the 1800s to the
- 1:52late 1700s; but it has been sunken for
- 1:55about 50 years, meaning it was due to
- 1:58this dam being built, and well, this
- 2:01whole town, as I told you, which is our
- 2:04Mexican Atlantis, ended up underwater.
- 2:08But we are about to be told the stories
- 2:11directly from the mouths of the people
- 2:13who once lived in this town and whose
- 2:15homes were, unfortunately, submerged.
- 2:18As we continued moving forward and
- 2:20gathering information, we realized that
- 2:22this temple does not actually hide any
- 2:24treasure, and the only thing people
- 2:25have caused is its deterioration.
- 2:27In this place where you currently see
- 2:29water, there used to be an entire town
- 2:31that lived mainly from agriculture, and
- 2:33only rivers flowed through here. The
- 2:34main river, the Macadoloso river, comes
- 2:36from Guanajuato. We see it there in the
- 2:37background. Here in the town,
- 2:38everything was love and peace. People
- 2:39used those waters to irrigate their
- 2:41crops. And well, what happened? That in
- 2:431973, in the neighboring city of
- 2:45Irapuato, its main dam broke and
- 2:47overflowed during a tropical storm.
- 2:49Part of the city of Irapuato was
- 2:50flooded for 4 days. There were deaths
- 2:52and a lot of material damage. And in
- 2:531980, the whole town was underwater,
- 2:55including this temple and all the
- 2:57little houses, right? Since the rain
- 2:59doesn't arrive in May, it becomes the
- 3:01driest month, it drops so much that you
- 3:02can appreciate it as it is now, where
- 3:04you can walk perfectly into the site.
- 3:06Well, this is the main entrance to what
- 3:08was the temple. In this part here, you
- 3:10can see how there was an arch that gave
- 3:12life to what was a double height where
- 3:14the organ and the choir were placed.
- 3:16For example, this was the stairwell, as
- 3:18you can see, this rectangular dimension
- 3:21. It went upwards, and passing the slab
- 3:23, the rooftop, it became what was the
- 3:24bell tower. And also from here you can
- 3:26access what was the double height I
- 3:28mentioned or where the choir was.
- 3:29Uh-huh, agreed. Had it not been for
- 3:31human beings, this place would still be
- 3:33standing completely. I forgot to
- 3:35mention that if we turn, for example,
- 3:37to the top part in the corner, you can
- 3:38see it very little, but well, there is
- 3:40that part there. And if not, this slab
- 3:43this slab above. Uh-huh. On the slab
- 3:45above the rooftop, we see some clay
- 3:47pots embedded,
- 3:48because in the end, this was also a
- 3:51tourist spot where its attraction or
- 3:53beauty was to enter by kayak and be
- 3:55able to see the domes and feel how the
- 3:57era enveloped you and transported you
- 4:00to something, well, mystical, right?
- 4:02It's very beautiful, it really has the
- 4:05art. Fortunately or unfortunately, we
- 4:08are in a time where we can walk inside.
- 4:11However, I have seen videos of this
- 4:13place where people would enter by kayak
- 4:15and it was very immersive and very
- 4:17beautiful. Uh, like it transported you
- 4:19to another era. However, this also
- 4:21harbors a very sad history. Here where
- 4:25all those stones are, it is supposed to
- 4:27be the main area where the priest stood
- 4:29to perform mass, right? That area is
- 4:32where the priest—I'm going to stand
- 4:34there so you know where. In fact, right
- 4:37where I am standing, it is said that
- 4:39the Virgin was left behind before the
- 4:40dam destroyed and swept away the entire
- 4:42town. There was a Virgin here that is
- 4:45said to have sadly sunk along with the
- 4:47temple and was never found. It was the
- 4:49Virgin of Sorrows. And it is said that
- 4:52this is exactly where the priest used
- 4:54to give mass. And, this being a very
- 4:56old temple, all around here is full of
- 4:59corpses. I mean, it was a cemetery. And
- 5:01in the main part, a priest is buried.
- 5:04It is not known exactly if the priest
- 5:06said, "I am not leaving my temple and I
- 5:08am staying here," because those are
- 5:09some of the things people say. Or if
- 5:11the priest genuinely passed away, had
- 5:13his little mass, and said, "Bury me
- 5:15here in my temple and I will stay here.
- 5:17" So, many people also believe that
- 5:19there is gold and treasure and things
- 5:21like that. Uh, the guides have
- 5:22confirmed to us that there is nothing
- 5:24here, that there is no gold. So, don't
- 5:26come digging, there is nothing of value
- 5:28, and if you dig you will surely just
- 5:31find corpses because we are around a
- 5:33cemetery, since in the past it was also
- 5:35common to bury loved ones around
- 5:37hospitals and town temples. But yes,
- 5:40basically if we go back to the history
- 5:43from a long time ago, here supposedly
- 5:45lie the remains of a priest whom we are
- 5:47going to try to contact today to see if
- 5:50it is true that he decided to stay and
- 5:52sink like a good captain of his cruise
- 5:54ship, just like in the Titanic. He said
- 5:57, "I'm staying in my temple," and
- 5:59besides, if you were near this temple,
- 6:01would you dare to go investigate to see
- 6:04if you could find any treasure? Or if
- 6:06you were to hear of a place that hides
- 6:08a treasure, would you be capable of
- 6:10destroying it just to keep it? This is
- 6:12the part where you go up to the bell.
- 6:15It is also very damaged now, but with
- 6:17great care, I think we can make it to
- 6:19the top. So the little spiders, poor
- 6:21little spiders, they build their little
- 6:24homes, but they don't know that in a
- 6:26few days or a few more rains they will
- 6:28drown. Ah, I hit my knee really hard.
- 6:34Leave a "rub it, Celeste" in the
- 6:35comments if you made it to this part of
- 6:36the video because it really hurt. We
- 6:39don't have enough time to go up further
- 6:41, but this here is what is known as the
- 6:43bell tower. This is where usually the
- 6:46priest, the monk, or the assistants
- 6:48would call for mass, but all those
- 6:51items were taken to the town's new
- 6:53temple. And well, I hope you really
- 6:56liked this story of the sunken temple.
- 6:58The truth is, I only feel nostalgia and
- 7:00pity for the conditions it's in today.
- 7:03But oh well, what can you do, it is
- 7:05what it is. I hope you liked the story.
- 7:08Subscribe, give it a thumbs up, and
- 7:10please, humans, don't destroy ancient
- 7:13places; after all, these things are
- 7:15stories, and they speak volumes about
- 7:17our education regarding history. And
- 7:20don't think everything ancient has
- 7:22treasure, and even if it did, well, it
- 7:24isn't yours. What's it to you? Don't go
- 7:26sticking your nose where you aren't
- 7:27wanted. Take care of and preserve
- 7:29history, monuments, and the buildings
- 7:31that hold it. God bless reggaeton. Amen
- 7:34. I want to remind you that Halloween
- 7:35and witch season is almost here. So
- 7:37please leave me in the comments the
- 7:39places, no matter where in the world
- 7:41they are, that you would most like us
- 7:43to visit and explore, because this year
- 7:45we will be going to the most mentioned
- 7:47places in the videos. Also, don't
- 7:49forget to give this video a thumbs up
- 7:50if you liked it so we can keep making
- 7:52them.
