  1. 0:00in this video I'll be ranking highly
  2. 0:01debated training topics as either
  3. 0:03overrated or underrated I'm joined by
  4. 0:05Mark ripo a world-renowned author that
  5. 0:08wrote this seminal text starting
  6. 0:10strength basic barbell training this
  7. 0:12book alone has sold over 1 million
  8. 0:13copies it's the only of its kind and if
  9. 0:15there's one book that all Fitness
  10. 0:17professionals should read it's this one
  11. 0:19I warn you Mark has very strong opinions
  12. 0:21on training but he's undoubtedly one of
  13. 0:23the most experienced and influential
  14. 0:24coaches of the last 50 years he's left
  15. 0:26an indelible mark on the strength
  16. 0:28conditioning world and I'll just say
  17. 0:29this when he speaks I listen so for the
  18. 0:32video I'm giving us each 30 to 45
  19. 0:34seconds to give our explanation and
  20. 0:36opinion on each training topic let's
  21. 0:37start number one lifting heavy the the
  22. 0:40basis of strength training it's
  23. 0:42underrated lifting light is not getting
  24. 0:45strong lifting heavy is getting stronger
  25. 0:47simple as that I would say absolutely
  26. 0:50underrated and Mark ripto is basically
  27. 0:53defin that you know with basic barbell
  28. 0:55training and if you want to get bigger
  29. 0:58you got to get stronger and if you want
  30. 0:59to get stronger you have to lift heavy
  31. 1:01underrated all there is to it training
  32. 1:03to
  33. 1:04failure training to failure is uh poor
  34. 1:10planning if we are trying to go up five
  35. 1:13pounds of workout on three sets of five
  36. 1:15Squat and you fail then you planned
  37. 1:18wrong but there's nothing to be obtained
  38. 1:20by failing to lift a weight I'd say
  39. 1:22train to failure is going to be
  40. 1:24underrated so unlike what Mark said he
  41. 1:26brings up very valid points however just
  42. 1:28in the context if you're training at
  43. 1:30least close to failure in a general
  44. 1:31sense it probably means you're trying
  45. 1:33hard and you're going to be doing
  46. 1:35something to probably get yourself
  47. 1:36better barbell training barbell training
  48. 1:40highly underrated barbell training
  49. 1:42facilitates the use of normal human
  50. 1:46movement patterns with an incrementally
  51. 1:48increasing load it's the purest
  52. 1:51expression of strength training barbell
  53. 1:53training is extremely underrated and the
  54. 1:57barbell is king that's all I'm going to
  55. 1:59say if you want to get strong lift the
  56. 2:01barbell there's no other form of
  57. 2:03training that's going to offer you as
  58. 2:05much value for your time other than
  59. 2:07barbell training it's it's the king
  60. 2:09kettle
  61. 2:11bells Kettle Mills uh are highly
  62. 2:14overrated they make wonderful door stops
  63. 2:16and that's about all I mean it it's you
  64. 2:18know it's done for time it's done for
  65. 2:20high rips they're not strength trining
  66. 2:23say kettle bells very overrated I would
  67. 2:26agree with Mark ripo no one that's truly
  68. 2:28strong ever got strong training with
  69. 2:30kettle bells you know you need to keep
  70. 2:32your reps probably in the three to five
  71. 2:34rep range that's what's going to work
  72. 2:36and you can't you're not doing kettle
  73. 2:38bells High Reps doing a 75 rep max with
  74. 2:41kettle bell swings or kettle bell snatch
  75. 2:42is not going to get you strong no and I
  76. 2:45yeah overrated if you're already strong
  77. 2:47they're easier absolutely easy that's
  78. 2:50that's the fact CrossFit
  79. 2:53training CrossFit training is uh not
  80. 2:56training CrossFit training is is exerc
  81. 3:00exercise now it's high-intensity
  82. 3:02exercise but you cannot constantly vary
  83. 3:05a training
  84. 3:06modality and predictably make
  85. 3:11increases in the expression of that
  86. 3:14training
  87. 3:15modality I couldn't say that any better
  88. 3:18and that's coming from a crossfitter and
  89. 3:20I was an elite crossfitter I still do
  90. 3:22some CrossFit but CrossFit training in
  91. 3:24its purest sense is
  92. 3:27overrated it cannot be constantly VAR
  93. 3:29and you cannot expect to get stronger
  94. 3:33fitter or better at anything if you're
  95. 3:34constantly changing what you're doing if
  96. 3:36you're going to do anything just get
  97. 3:38stronger that's what you need to do
  98. 3:40CrossFit training overrated range of
  99. 3:43motion to say that's underrated or
  100. 3:45overrated range of motion is dictated by
  101. 3:47muscular skeletal Anatomy uh you should
  102. 3:50attempt to use the fullest
  103. 3:52effective range of motion for every
  104. 3:55barbell exercise that you do it's longer
  105. 3:58than an effective range of motion like a
  106. 4:01as to Grass squat just limits the amount
  107. 4:04of weight you can lift which limits the
  108. 4:07amount of force you can produce which
  109. 4:08limits the amount of strength you can
  110. 4:10develop I can't say that any better I
  111. 4:12would say range of motion is underrated
  112. 4:16as long as you're training the lift in
  113. 4:19the most effective range to get strong
  114. 4:21the most effective range that can be
  115. 4:23loaded
  116. 4:25periodization periodization as it is
  117. 4:27understood in uh uh the exercise
  118. 4:31literature is typically uh Matt veev
  119. 4:36undulating periodization that you know
  120. 4:39the programming looks like s and cosign
  121. 4:41waves and it's it's fancy and looks like
  122. 4:44trig and stuff going up in weight every
  123. 4:47week if you have finished your novice
  124. 4:50progression or then going up every month
  125. 4:54two months three months however Advanced
  126. 4:56you are if you're an advanced
  127. 4:58trainee that's the usefulness of
  128. 5:01periodization I would say periodization
  129. 5:03for most people is going to be overrated
  130. 5:06exactly what Mark said really people
  131. 5:09just need to use a novice linear
  132. 5:13progression all right to get strong as
  133. 5:15they can they don't really need to do
  134. 5:16anything different and then once you
  135. 5:18reach an advanced level which most
  136. 5:20people never actually even do then you
  137. 5:22can actually get more concerned about
  138. 5:25periodization undulating you can get as
  139. 5:28detailed as you may want but I don't
  140. 5:30even know if you really need to so I'm
  141. 5:32going to say for most people
  142. 5:34periodization overrated D Lo
  143. 5:38weeks D Lo weeks are what happens when
  144. 5:41you get
  145. 5:44hurt all right A lot of people program
  146. 5:48them into their training and I haven't
  147. 5:50ever understood why I I agree completely
  148. 5:55I'd say D Lo weeks are overrated highly
  149. 5:59overrated not needed for the vast
  150. 6:00majority of people I never actually take
  151. 6:03D Lo weeks if I'm feeling too tired
  152. 6:07under recovered I may take an additional
  153. 6:09day of rest here or there but I never
  154. 6:11dedicate a full week to just DLo just
  155. 6:14because you waight to
  156. 6:16do what's the point there is no point
  157. 6:20there is no point I don't see a point
  158. 6:23this is wisdom right here functional
  159. 6:25training balance and stability in that
  160. 6:28context here's my idea of balance
  161. 6:31training it's walking a PR set of five
  162. 6:35out of the squat rack squatting down
  163. 6:38standing back up without falling over
  164. 6:42and then putting it back in the rack
  165. 6:44without falling over that is the purest
  166. 6:48expression of balance training I can
  167. 6:50think of functional training extremely
  168. 6:53overrated exactly what Mark ripo just
  169. 6:55said if anytime stability or stability
  170. 7:00becomes a factor where you cannot
  171. 7:02produce maximal Force then you're doing
  172. 7:04something wrong all right so absolutely
  173. 7:08overrated if you just get strong really
  174. 7:11just Squat and deadlift and
  175. 7:13presses that is what yall you that's all
  176. 7:16the training you really need to do they
  177. 7:18all three involve balance absolutely
  178. 7:20they they improve balance as well yes
  179. 7:23cuz when you get stronger when you get
  180. 7:24stronger everything is better right
  181. 7:26stretching and flexibility stretching
  182. 7:30and flexibility are a complete waste of
  183. 7:32time all right if you are doing normal
  184. 7:36human movement
  185. 7:37patterns with a full range of
  186. 7:41motion then you are as flexible as you
  187. 7:43need to be if you squat below
  188. 7:47parallel if you lock your presses out
  189. 7:50all the way at the top with Shrugged
  190. 7:52shoulders if you stand fully erect on
  191. 7:56the deadlift after having pulled the bar
  192. 7:59off the floor with a lumbar spine and
  193. 8:02perfect anatomical extension then you
  194. 8:06are as flexible as you need to be
  195. 8:09excessive flexibility exposes your
  196. 8:12joints to ranges emotion that will
  197. 8:15injure them don't do
  198. 8:18that say flexibility extremely overrated
  199. 8:23and I can't say it any better than what
  200. 8:25Mark ripo just did so overrated training
  201. 8:28with dumbbells training
  202. 8:30dumbbells I I don't see the point if
  203. 8:32you're doing a barbell bench press
  204. 8:34nobody ever got stronger on their
  205. 8:35barbell bench press by doing dumbbell if
  206. 8:38you want to do some dumbbells do some
  207. 8:39dumbbells but let's not pretend that
  208. 8:42they make your bench press go up bench
  209. 8:44press goes up cuz your bench press had
  210. 8:46weight added to it and you did the Reps
  211. 8:49I'd say training with dumbbells
  212. 8:51overrated anytime you want to get strong
  213. 8:52it's all about lifting as heaviest
  214. 8:54weight as you possibly can you'll always
  215. 8:56be able to lift a heavier weight with a
  216. 8:58barbell than you ever will will be able
  217. 9:00to do with a dumbbell anyone doing heavy
  218. 9:02dumbbell goblet squats as a dumbass
  219. 9:06that's why that's that's why barbells
  220. 9:08were invented and that that's true for
  221. 9:10anything if you barbells were invented
  222. 9:12so you didn't have to do goblet squats
  223. 9:14Absolut bar that's that's it get a bar
  224. 9:17and that's that's true same thing with
  225. 9:19any kind of press or a deadlift the
  226. 9:21longer I train the less dumbbells I
  227. 9:23actually use and the more barbells that
  228. 9:26I've just naturally realized that's
  229. 9:27what's giv me the most value for my time
  230. 9:29trap bar
  231. 9:32deadlifts
  232. 9:33apologize this is a this is a
  233. 9:37setup this is a
  234. 9:39setup trap bar deadlifts are stupid trap
  235. 9:43bar deadlifts are so the guys that
  236. 9:46manufacture the trap bar can sell a trap
  237. 9:49bar and that's all they're for i' say
  238. 9:52trap bar deadlift very overrated I think
  239. 9:56in maybe certain contexts it can makes
  240. 10:00sense if it's the only kind of deadlift
  241. 10:01that you're willing to do then I'd say
  242. 10:04do it but straight bar conventional
  243. 10:06deadlift that is going to strengthen
  244. 10:08your back and your posterior chain
  245. 10:10better than any other exercise that
  246. 10:12there is say in general trap bar
  247. 10:14deadlift overrated Sumo
  248. 10:17deadlifts Sumo deadlifts are are are a
  249. 10:22way at a powerlifting meat to reduce the
  250. 10:26range of motion of the
  251. 10:28pull so you can lift heavier
  252. 10:31weights
  253. 10:34uh and that's that's all they're for
  254. 10:36that's why they were invented a long
  255. 10:38time ago it's important to keep in
  256. 10:42mind the heaviest deadlifts that have
  257. 10:45ever been pulled off of the floor were
  258. 10:48pulled with your hands outside your feet
  259. 10:53there must be a reason yep I'd say Sumo
  260. 10:56deadlifts again are overrated
  261. 10:59and just if you can answer this question
  262. 11:01you could say a conventional deadlift
  263. 11:03will get your Sumo deadlift better but
  264. 11:05would a Sumo deadlift bring up your
  265. 11:07conventional deadlift no there so no it
  266. 11:10doesn't that's because it doesn't work
  267. 11:12the same range of motion that's it and
  268. 11:13that's I feel like that's really all you
  269. 11:15need to say Sumo deadlift unless you're
  270. 11:17an elite level powerlifter trying to
  271. 11:19pull the world record it's for most
  272. 11:21people you need to stick with a
  273. 11:22conventional deadlift hands outside your
  274. 11:25feet and strengthen your back yes
  275. 11:27isolation exercises isolation exercises
  276. 11:30are not normal human movement patterns
  277. 11:33and I I don't even know anything about
  278. 11:37them isolation exercises are overrated
  279. 11:41and if you just heard what Mark ripo
  280. 11:44said is they're not normal human
  281. 11:47movement patterns that's that's all
  282. 11:49there is to it you don't you don't
  283. 11:51really need to do them if you want to do
  284. 11:53them because you enjoy it and it makes
  285. 11:55your training more interesting and
  286. 11:56you'll be more consistent then do them
  287. 11:59but don't be confused and think that you
  288. 12:01need to do them all right compound
  289. 12:04movements done with heavy weights over a
  290. 12:06large range of motion that's effective
  291. 12:09training that's all there really needs
  292. 12:10to be said yes bro
  293. 12:12splits I don't know what that means I'll
  294. 12:16I'll Define that it's like a
  295. 12:18bodybuilding split where you're doing
  296. 12:19shoulders one day arms the next day
  297. 12:22chest then you might do hamstrings and
  298. 12:24quads together it's it's body part
  299. 12:27thinking it's not strength training Ro
  300. 12:29splits bodybuilding training overrated I
  301. 12:33would never train like that I
  302. 12:36train the big lifts and that's how you
  303. 12:39get strong that's how you get strong
  304. 12:41bodybuilders that might work for them
  305. 12:42but generally they're you know taking a
  306. 12:44few other substances and compounds that
  307. 12:46works for little skinny bodybuilders
  308. 12:49yeah there you go but the big strong
  309. 12:51bodybuilders that look you know whose
  310. 12:53names you remember don't do that
  311. 12:56they never got strong doing bro splits
  312. 12:58that's a fact lifting belts and straps
  313. 13:01lifting belts and straps are very
  314. 13:02important tightens and helps you tighten
  315. 13:06the muscle mass around your
  316. 13:09spine and helps you maintain normal
  317. 13:11anatomical position during a pull in a
  318. 13:13squat you can Squat and pull more with a
  319. 13:16belt but the belt is not doing the
  320. 13:19lifting you are strap can enable you to
  321. 13:22do partial movements like rack pulls
  322. 13:26with overload weights that will make
  323. 13:29your deadlift stronger you know there
  324. 13:31are some people with short fingers that
  325. 13:33just cannot hold on to a regular
  326. 13:35deadlift and if they want to continue to
  327. 13:37train the pull they're going to have to
  328. 13:38use straps if that's the case use straps
  329. 13:42belts and straps are extremely
  330. 13:44underrated and they should be used in
  331. 13:47the right context and using a belt it's
  332. 13:51it's basically you're just able to brace
  333. 13:53more effectively recruit more motor
  334. 13:55units and more muscle into the lift and
  335. 13:57you're and anytime you're able to lift
  336. 13:59more weight you're going to get stronger
  337. 14:01there's a big confusion that say oh you
  338. 14:03shouldn't squat or deadlift you know
  339. 14:06with the belt you should just do it raw
  340. 14:08and that's how you're going to get
  341. 14:09stronger anyone that's ever been
  342. 14:11actually strong uses a
  343. 14:15belt lifting belt is one of the most
  344. 14:17valuable training tools you can use
  345. 14:19straps again the same way if grip ever
  346. 14:21becomes a limiting factor for a deadlift
  347. 14:24that should not be that should never be
  348. 14:25the case all right use belts and straps
  349. 14:29to get as strong as you can
  350. 14:31underrated bands and chains or
  351. 14:33accommodating
  352. 14:34resistance bands and chains make the
  353. 14:37weight
  354. 14:38heavier during the natural range of
  355. 14:41motion of the lift where your Leverage
  356. 14:43is the best at the top of the lift right
  357. 14:46they add resistance at the top of the
  358. 14:48lift where it gets easy anyway I'd say
  359. 14:50bands and chains are overrated I've
  360. 14:53personally never used them I'm not a
  361. 14:55power lifter but I'm respectably strong
  362. 14:59but in my opinion I feel like you're
  363. 15:00just taking something and making it way
  364. 15:03more complicated than it needs to be and
  365. 15:05I've seen yeah but again complexity
  366. 15:08that's why you see all these videos on
  367. 15:09YouTube of high school football coaches
  368. 15:11using bands and chains for a little kid
  369. 15:13squatting 225 yeah like what in the
  370. 15:16hell's going on it doesn't make sense
  371. 15:18there's there's I've seen guys in my gym
  372. 15:20using bands and chains and every single
  373. 15:23time they're not the strongest guy in
  374. 15:26the gym just barbells and plates
  375. 15:30is all you need band and chains are just
  376. 15:32for
  377. 15:33fun thank you that's that's a I'm going
  378. 15:37to look I look forward to sharing that
  379. 15:38posting that thank you very much for
  380. 15:40weighing in on that man this was I can't
  381. 15:44tell you how much I I really appreciate
  382. 15:46you sure
