  13. 0:32what's the difference between another
  14. 0:34and other what's the difference between
  15. 0:36other and others what's the difference
  16. 0:39between another and the other so stop
  17. 0:43worrying in this video i'm going to
  18. 0:45explain it all
  19. 0:50so let's start with when to use another
  20. 0:53or the other and
  21. 0:55to help explain this i think it's useful
  22. 0:58if we just delete the word other
  23. 1:02for a minute and just focus on when we
  24. 1:04use
  25. 1:11this morning i was making orange juice
  26. 1:14when an orange fell on the floor we used
  27. 1:17an orange and not
  28. 1:19the
  29. 1:20orange because it's not important which
  30. 1:25orange fell on the floor i have five
  31. 1:28oranges on the table and
  32. 1:31an orange fell on the floor we're not
  33. 1:33interested it's not important and it's
  34. 1:35not relevant
  35. 1:37which orange fell on the floor
  36. 1:40and if it's not relevant which one and
  37. 1:43we're not being specific
  38. 1:45we use uh
  39. 1:47or an if i want to be specific and
  40. 1:51specify that the orange that fell on the
  41. 1:54floor was the bad one
  42. 1:56then i could say i was making orange
  43. 1:59juice and the bad orange fell on the
  44. 2:03floor you see i'm being specific i'm
  45. 2:06specifying which orange it was it was
  46. 2:09the green one
  47. 2:11and if we're being specific then we use
  48. 2:15the
  49. 2:16now let's add the word other and we have
  50. 2:19another one word another
  51. 2:22or the other
  52. 2:24and the same rule applies if we're not
  53. 2:27being specific we use another
  54. 2:31but if we're being specific we use the
  55. 2:35other
  56. 2:38now we use both another and other to
  57. 2:42talk about
  58. 2:43non-specific things and this is probably
  59. 2:46the biggest mistake that students make
  60. 2:49with all these words and you can find
  61. 2:52more of these very very common mistakes
  62. 2:55in my free book english quick fix which
  63. 2:59you can download by clicking up there or
  64. 3:02in the description
  65. 3:04so to explain this have a look at these
  66. 3:06examples
  67. 3:08can you pass me another orange please
  68. 3:11can you pass me two other oranges please
  69. 3:14have you got any other advice
  70. 3:17so in the first example can you pass me
  71. 3:19another orange
  72. 3:21orange is singular and we use another so
  73. 3:25the rule is that we use another when
  74. 3:27it's followed by a singular countable
  75. 3:30noun
  76. 3:31the second example we said can you pass
  77. 3:33me two other oranges so we use other
  78. 3:37when we're talking about a plural like
  79. 3:40oranges
  80. 3:42and in the third example have you got
  81. 3:44any other advice advice is an
  82. 3:47uncountable noun it's not possible to
  83. 3:49say one advice to advices
  84. 3:53it's uncountable
  85. 3:54and with uncountable nouns we use
  86. 3:58other
  87. 3:59okay quick summary so far
  88. 4:02another we use it for a singular thing
  89. 4:06and a non-specific thing
  90. 4:08i need another phone
  91. 4:10the other we use it for a singular thing
  92. 4:13and a specific thing oh somebody's in
  93. 4:16that bathroom you have to use the other
  94. 4:18one
  95. 4:19and other we use for a non-specific
  96. 4:23plural or uncountable noun some people
  97. 4:27drink tea
  98. 4:28other people drink coffee
  99. 4:30if you have any other information that'd
  100. 4:33be great
  101. 4:37the word others
  102. 4:39is basically a short version of other
  103. 4:43plus a plural noun
  104. 4:46for example
  105. 4:47my best friends live all over the world
  106. 4:51some live in europe others live in
  107. 4:54america one lives in australia here
  108. 4:58others means other friends i've got a
  109. 5:01big bag of oranges
  110. 5:03some are good others are bad here others
  111. 5:06means other oranges
  112. 5:11now before i explain the t-shirt when do
  113. 5:14we use anothers in english can you write
  114. 5:17one sentence using another's
  115. 5:20the answer is
  116. 5:21no you can't because another's is not a
  117. 5:26word
  118. 5:26it doesn't exist
  119. 5:28if you use the word another's in english
  120. 5:31it's always always going to be wrong
  121. 5:35okay
  122. 5:36let's have a look at the t-shirt
  123. 5:40so when i talked about my friends i said
  124. 5:42that some live in europe others live in
  125. 5:45america and one lives in australia i
  126. 5:49could also say that the ones that live
  127. 5:52in america are mostly americans
  128. 5:55i see the ones that live in europe more
  129. 5:59frequently than the ones that live in
  130. 6:02america that's okay
  131. 6:04but here i'm using the ones
  132. 6:07it's not possible to say
  133. 6:10ones
  134. 6:11to refer to a group of things the plural
  135. 6:15of one is some
  136. 6:17so ones are spicy
  137. 6:20some are spicy as we've just seen the
  138. 6:24word anothers does not exist in english
  139. 6:27and as we saw earlier when we're talking
  140. 6:29about other plural noun things
  141. 6:32we use others
  142. 6:35some are spicy
  143. 6:37others
  144. 6:38don't
  145. 6:40it's still bad
  146. 6:42i mean we could say some burn your mouth
  147. 6:45others don't some taste great
  148. 6:48others don't because there we're using
  149. 6:51normal verbs like burn and taste but if
  150. 6:55we're using a verb like to be or can
  151. 6:59then it needs to match in both parts of
  152. 7:02the sentence
  153. 7:03so
  154. 7:04it has to be
  155. 7:06some are spicy
  156. 7:09others
  157. 7:10aren't
  158. 7:11now do you remember in my earlier
  159. 7:13example when i said i was making orange
  160. 7:16juice and an orange fell on the floor
  161. 7:20well now would be a great moment to
  162. 7:22watch that video because there i explain
  163. 7:26why we use the past continuous for i was
  164. 7:30making
  165. 7:31and why we used the past simple for
  166. 7:34an orange fell
  167. 7:36thanks for watching this video like and
  168. 7:38subscribe and bloody bloody blah and
  169. 7:40i'll see you in that video next
  170. 7:43bye for now
  171. 7:44[Music]
