  1. 0:00now electric cars have been on our roads
  2. 0:02for some time but given the high costs
  3. 0:04and logistical challenges they've never
  4. 0:06really cracked the mainstream but that
  5. 0:08could all be about to
  6. 0:10change electric cars may be having their
  7. 0:13best year since 1979 when Gary Newman
  8. 0:16did this to our
  9. 0:20ears battery only EV sales are up more
  10. 0:23than 16% and hybrids are up a whopping
  11. 0:27115% the number of electric vehicle
  12. 0:29model has more than doubled since the
  13. 0:31start of last year and more are on their
  14. 0:33way as more Chinese Brands hit our
  15. 0:36Shores increasing competition there's at
  16. 0:38least 10 new brands now some of these
  17. 0:40are aimed at that sort of mid-luxury
  18. 0:42Market to compete with Brands like Lexus
  19. 0:44but there are some coming in at that
  20. 0:46value part of the market so we will see
  21. 0:48more cars priced below that $40,000 Mark
  22. 0:51which is terrific for urban EV buyers
  23. 0:54but not everyone's sold it's a bit
  24. 0:56difficult not everywhere has charging
  25. 0:58station so there's not enough point to
  26. 1:00load your um batteries up if there was
  27. 1:03more around definitely would lean
  28. 1:04towards it more I would want to make
  29. 1:05sure that there's enough charging
  30. 1:07station so that um I wouldn't have to
  31. 1:09worry about the car not working on the
  32. 1:11way a new network of more than 500
  33. 1:14charging stations in South Australia
  34. 1:15seems to have allayed concerns there
  35. 1:17with EV registrations in Regional sa
  36. 1:20jumping from 125 3 years ago to a
  37. 1:23whopping 2100 today but experts say it's
  38. 1:26still not enough well this is the key
  39. 1:29owning an electric car means you need to
  40. 1:30charge an electric car if you can park
  41. 1:32off Street and you can do it at home
  42. 1:34that's the easiest way but if you
  43. 1:36require public charging our
  44. 1:38infrastructure still isn't up to scratch
  45. 1:40and there are many other Hills yet to
  46. 1:42climb resale value is still low and
  47. 1:44insurance costs about 20% more than for
  48. 1:47other vehicles still the pr for EVS is
  49. 1:50improving certainly more so than its
  50. 1:51cousin the driverless car after San
  51. 1:54Francisco residents were woken up by a
  52. 1:56group of weo Robo taxis performing their
  53. 1:58mating call in the middle of the
  54. 2:00[Music]
  55. 2:02night incidents like that show we're not
  56. 2:05quite ready for Skynet to take over
  57. 2:06Sarah Conor can sleep uh sleep soundly
  58. 2:08at night the the the end of the world is
  59. 2:10not coming thanks to AI or or
  60. 2:12self-driven cars so with our electric
  61. 2:15vehicles still Driver full is the long
  62. 2:17promised EV era finally
  63. 2:22here this is so fascinating so I've got
  64. 2:24a friend who had solar panels put on
  65. 2:26their roof to to be better for the
  66. 2:28environment and then they thought to to
  67. 2:30go along with that they buy an electric
  68. 2:31car then they found out that you can't
  69. 2:33just their car you couldn't just charge
  70. 2:34it from an outlet you've got to get all
  71. 2:36these different wires and things put in
  72. 2:37are going to cost tens of thousands of
  73. 2:38dollars so now they've got to go to
  74. 2:39Westfield down the road twice a week to
  75. 2:42charge their car but they've recently
  76. 2:43also found out there's a strip mall
  77. 2:44nearby them uh when they with the
  78. 2:46hairdresser in it and they have a
  79. 2:47charger there so now they get their
  80. 2:49haircut once a month and they' changed
  81. 2:52hairdresses just so they can charge
  82. 2:53their car yeah but this is my fear I
  83. 2:55fear that the infrastructure just hasn't
  84. 2:57quite caught up yet because I would say
  85. 2:59where borderline like the majority of
  86. 3:01people in this country would at least be
  87. 3:03considering like buying an EV in the
  88. 3:05future but I just don't think that we
  89. 3:07have the things in place Australia there
  90. 3:102,000 Outlets being installed that seems
  91. 3:12like we're on the right track yeah yeah
  92. 3:14I still have a CD player in my car I
  93. 3:17before my current car I had a tape deck
  94. 3:21sock so I am what they call a later
  95. 3:24doter what were you what were you
  96. 3:25playing on the tape dick I had a I had a
  97. 3:27Tracy Chapman tape stuck in it
  98. 3:31fast car just playing Just fast car
  99. 3:34running fast car ever so I'll be getting
  100. 3:38my electric vehicle in 20150
