1. 0:01Marty Tankleff now a 46 year old
2. 0:04attorney teaches a Georgetown University
3. 0:07about a side of the justice system he
4. 0:09says he knows about all too well in
5. 0:11justice and for that Suffolk County will
6. 0:14now pay this settlement says essentially
7. 0:18the same thing that a jury verdict would
8. 0:20have said and I'm innocent a 10 million
9. 0:23dollar settlement with the county that
10. 0:25sent him to prison for more than 17
11. 0:27years after he was convicted of
12. 0:29murdering his parents there's no amount
13. 0:32of money that Suffolk County or the
14. 0:34state of New York
15. 0:35anybody could ever give me that could
16. 0:37ever fully compensate me for everything
17. 0:39that I've lost in life the extraordinary
18. 0:41Odyssey began in 1988 with a shocking
19. 0:44murder of a couple an upscale Belle
20. 0:47Terre pinned on their teenage son who
21. 0:49admitted to petty gripes at the time I
22. 0:52was a reporter called to the crime scene
23. 0:53and later covered every day of the trial
24. 0:56while family members wore these buttons
25. 0:59insisting that Tankleff confession was
26. 1:02coerced by police who jumped to the
27. 1:04wrong conclusions nine days of
28. 1:07deliberations then this verdict and a
29. 1:1150-year life sentence the conviction
30. 1:14overturned because the defense argued
31. 1:16the confession didn't match evidence and
32. 1:18someone else overheard taking credit for
33. 1:21a hit on the tank lifts over money owed
34. 1:23the settlement isn't the end it doesn't
35. 1:26bring back to 17 years that he lost it
36. 1:28doesn't bring back his parents and the
37. 1:30people who are responsible for killing
38. 1:31his parents were never prosecuted one
39. 1:34prosecutor and detective who worked the
40. 1:37case plan to argue against the
41. 1:38settlement before it's approved they
42. 1:40believe the jury got it right but a
43. 1:43juror I spoke with said he has deep
44. 1:45regrets I'm happy he's being compensated
45. 1:48for Suffolk County's inept handling of
46. 1:50the case as for taxpayers footing the
47. 1:52bill a lot of money but you know I think
48. 1:55he's entitled to it unfortunately I kind
49. 1:57of have to because they really messed
50. 1:58that whole case up it's a hefty thing
51. 2:01that we all gonna have to absorb into
52. 2:02Tankleff says it won't make up for lost
53. 2:04time but enables him to work on his
54. 2:06mission
55. 2:07when you don't investigate and you're
56. 2:09closed-minded it destroys lives the case
57. 2:12could be reopened there is no statute of
58. 2:15limitations for murder Carolyn gusoff
59. 2:18CBS 2 News the ten million dollars must
60. 2:21still be approved by the full Suffolk
61. 2:23County Legislature
