  1. 0:00um ever since the um shock and um
  2. 0:06perhaps Elation of the
  3. 0:10election it has become very obvious
  4. 0:13that we're living in a in a new
  5. 0:16political
  6. 0:19environment um the response of the
  7. 0:22Democrats and the left to the
  8. 0:24election is so unusual unprecedented I
  9. 0:29think in my my adult
  10. 0:31lifetime I think one would have to go
  11. 0:33back to
  12. 0:351860 to see such a obstinate
  13. 0:40refusal to accept however grudgingly the
  14. 0:44result of a free
  15. 0:47election and clearly the political
  16. 0:50climate is
  17. 0:51different now what's actually going
  18. 0:55on for for a generation I think the left
  19. 0:58had a an
  20. 1:00incendiary
  21. 1:02accusation that it would almost
  22. 1:05habitually toss out pretty much every
  23. 1:08election
  24. 1:09season against us and that is that we
  25. 1:13the conservatives the Libertarians were
  26. 1:16the party of racism of
  27. 1:20racism and um this was a charge that our
  28. 1:24side was found almost unanswerable we
  29. 1:26typically go into a very defensive mode
  30. 1:29trying desperately to change the
  31. 1:32topic well in the last movie Hillary's
  32. 1:35America I tried to attack that charge
  33. 1:39head-on not not
  34. 1:43[Applause]
  35. 1:48defensively but but
  36. 1:50offensively uh really Shifting the onus
  37. 1:53and and saying listen you're actually
  38. 1:55blaming us for the stuff that you did
  39. 2:00uh and moreover you've never admitted it
  40. 2:03you've never apologized for it you've
  41. 2:05never paid one penny of restitution for
  42. 2:08it so you're kind of like the guys who
  43. 2:11poisoned the wells and are now
  44. 2:13pretending to show up as the water
  45. 2:16commissioner
  46. 2:18now this charge of racism today if you
  47. 2:22follow social media has lost a lot of
  48. 2:25its sting now when the left puts up its
  49. 2:28memes about the Republicans being the
  50. 2:29party of racism 20 other memes show up
  51. 2:33with Robert bird in the KKK outfit so
  52. 2:36there's there's powerful media counter
  53. 2:39punches uh and so the the race card
  54. 2:43doesn't quite have the power that it has
  55. 2:48had for so long and so what we've now
  56. 2:51seen is a pivot a pivot away from the
  57. 2:54race card to a card that is actually if
  58. 2:57anything even more incendiary and that
  59. 3:00is the fascism
  60. 3:02card and you know when we when we when
  61. 3:04we look at the media we see
  62. 3:07stories and we tend to look for lies and
  63. 3:12and there are there are often small lies
  64. 3:14that we are we catch so Hillary says oh
  65. 3:18the business in Benghazi was due to a
  66. 3:20video lie Obama says if you want to keep
  67. 3:24your doctor you can
  68. 3:25lie but these are these are sort of
  69. 3:28retail lies
  70. 3:30uh what interests me is the wholesale
  71. 3:33lies behind them in other words not just
  72. 3:35the story but what can be called a meta
  73. 3:37story the story behind the story and The
  74. 3:40Meta story of our time is that Trump the
  75. 3:44Republicans the conservatives the
  76. 3:46Libertarians we are the party of
  77. 3:49fascism we are the we are the neo-nazis
  78. 3:52of the 21st
  79. 3:54century now normally this is a sort of
  80. 3:58boilerplate rhetoric I have to say that
  81. 4:00to a lesser degree even Reagan even
  82. 4:02Bush the Nazi accusation was tossed out
  83. 4:06against them as
  84. 4:08well but now it's not just an accusation
  85. 4:12it is actually the
  86. 4:14justification for a lot of the crazy
  87. 4:18business that we see going on not just
  88. 4:20in politics but also in the
  89. 4:23culture and so when you see people
  90. 4:25blocking speakers on campus you say what
  91. 4:28are you doing how can you block speakers
  92. 4:29speakers from speaking on
  93. 4:31campus We Are The antifa Movement we're
  94. 4:35anti-fascists fascists have no right to
  95. 4:37free speech that's why we're doing what
  96. 4:39we're doing and we're fully morally
  97. 4:41warranted in doing
  98. 4:42so you disrupt the
  99. 4:45inauguration now you know I wasn't very
  100. 4:48happy about Obama's re-election but I
  101. 4:50wouldn't have dreamed of going down to
  102. 4:51Washington DC and throwing rocks at
  103. 4:54Starbucks and overturning cars what
  104. 4:56could be the justification for
  105. 4:58boycotting the inauguration
  106. 5:00disrupting it blocking it what could be
  107. 5:03the justification for what is clearly
  108. 5:05underway now which is a kind of effort
  109. 5:08at a disguised coup by a disguised coup
  110. 5:13what I mean is an effort to uproot Trump
  111. 5:16throw him out of there whether or not he
  112. 5:19did anything
  113. 5:22culpable the justification for it again
  114. 5:24is that Trump is a
  115. 5:26fascist was he elected sure wasn't
  116. 5:30Hitler elected in
  117. 5:311933 to a degree yes Hitler and musolini
  118. 5:35came to power I wouldn't say fully
  119. 5:36lawfully but with the quazi legal
  120. 5:39trappings of Law and so the the
  121. 5:42motivation of anti-fascism is that this
  122. 5:44is sort of Germany Circa
  123. 5:481930s and whatever we do I think in the
  124. 5:52name of one of these anti-fascist groups
  125. 5:53is by any means
  126. 5:57necessary to get rid of of this fascism
  127. 6:01that has evidently now come to
  128. 6:03America so now in this book I
  129. 6:07essentially take this accusation and dig
  130. 6:11into it now this is actually largely
  131. 6:14unplowed
  132. 6:15territory um admittedly uh hyek this is
  133. 6:19going back almost 75 years in the road
  134. 6:22to surum made the very tantalizing
  135. 6:24suggestion that socialism and fascism
  136. 6:27were cousins that their fight was kind
  137. 6:31of like the fight between the Shia and
  138. 6:32the Sunni or between the Catholics and
  139. 6:34the Protestants a fight on the left
  140. 6:38among two ideologies that actually had a
  141. 6:40lot of lot in common with each other
  142. 6:44Jonah Goldberg uh more recently did
  143. 6:47liberal
  144. 6:48fascism but even Jonah didn't really go
  145. 6:50to Nazism
  146. 6:54Nazism um ironically if you look at the
  147. 6:57history of the democratic party it far
  148. 7:00more resembles Nazism than fascism in
  149. 7:03this sense there's actually nothing
  150. 7:05inherently racist about fascism musolini
  151. 7:09was not a racist in fact musolini
  152. 7:11rescued Jews during World War II and
  153. 7:13blocked Hitler's efforts at trying to
  154. 7:16impose the final solution in
  155. 7:18Italy uh but what distinguishes fascism
  156. 7:23musolini from national socialism Hitler
  157. 7:27is that national socialism was inherent
  158. 7:29ly racist national socialism encompassed
  159. 7:33a kind of inherent
  160. 7:35anti-Semitism that distinguished it from
  161. 7:37melini's fascism now if you look at the
  162. 7:40history of the democratic party which is
  163. 7:42an almost uninterrupted history of
  164. 7:44racism going back 150
  165. 7:47years this racism far more closely
  166. 7:50resembles Nazi
  167. 7:53anti-Semitism than it does melini's
  168. 7:58Fascism what is fascism at its core the
  169. 8:02the ironic thing is that I I I'll listen
  170. 8:03to historians talking about Trump and
  171. 8:07fascism and they say well Trump's a
  172. 8:09fascist because he's a
  173. 8:11nationalist Trump wants to make America
  174. 8:13great again didn't Hitler want to make
  175. 8:15Germany great again Trump is a fascist
  176. 8:18because he's an authoritarian or because
  177. 8:21he's a militarist or because he's a
  178. 8:23xenophobe now what's really interesting
  179. 8:25is that all of these although features
  180. 8:27of fascism are are not essential
  181. 8:31features of fascism it's kind of like
  182. 8:33saying that because the American
  183. 8:35Founders were farmers that somehow
  184. 8:37farming was an essential element of the
  185. 8:40American founding no they happened to be
  186. 8:42Farmers but the American founding wasn't
  187. 8:45about
  188. 8:46farming nationalism is very common on
  189. 8:49the left and on the
  190. 8:51right Castro was a
  191. 8:53nationalist Gandhi was a nationalist
  192. 8:56chavara was a nationalist sty was a
  193. 9:00nationalist Mother Russia in other words
  194. 9:03nationalism is hardly an identifying or
  195. 9:06distinguishing characteristic of
  196. 9:09fascism now what fascism really is about
  197. 9:13in order to understand fascism we have
  198. 9:15to ask a simple question who is the
  199. 9:18leading thinker of
  200. 9:21fascism
  201. 9:23now with other ideologies you can say
  202. 9:26right away who's the leading thinker of
  203. 9:27Marxism well Marx
  204. 9:29who's the leading thinker of capitalism
  205. 9:31well Adam
  206. 9:32Smith who's the leading thinker of
  207. 9:35fascism Dead Silence why because
  208. 9:40something has been going on and that
  209. 9:42something that's been going on is that
  210. 9:44ever since World War II Progressive
  211. 9:47historians and Scholars who came to
  212. 9:49dominate Academia and have dominated it
  213. 9:51for the last 75
  214. 9:54years decided that it was rather
  215. 9:56inconvenient for us to know the
  216. 9:59ideological content of
  217. 10:02fascism that's why even today if you
  218. 10:04approach intelligent people on the
  219. 10:05street they can't tell you what fascism
  220. 10:07stands for by the way the leading
  221. 10:10thinker of fascism was a guy named
  222. 10:11Giovani jantile very well-known
  223. 10:14philosopher in the early 20th century
  224. 10:17close adviser to musolini became his
  225. 10:19education Minister wrote voluminously on
  226. 10:22fascism none of his works are even known
  227. 10:25why because when you start to read them
  228. 10:28they actually sound eerily similar
  229. 10:31eerily familiar and what I'm trying to
  230. 10:34say is that the reason we don't know
  231. 10:35gentia is not because his work is
  232. 10:38irrelevant and obscure it couldn't be
  233. 10:40more relevant so the first thing that
  234. 10:42Janti says is that the core meaning of
  235. 10:45fascism is to increase the power of the
  236. 10:48centralized
  237. 10:50State fascism is ultimately about state
  238. 10:54power and fascism is about
  239. 10:57ultimately extend ending State control
  240. 11:00over the life of the individual and
  241. 11:04producing later the Nazis would have the
  242. 11:06term for it the Nazis called it g
  243. 11:08shalang g shalang means making everybody
  244. 11:11March in loog step with the ideology of
  245. 11:15the state even in their private life so
  246. 11:18it's not just State control of
  247. 11:20Corporations State capitalism but it's
  248. 11:23State control of your life
  249. 11:29the other point that jti makes is that
  250. 11:31in order to achieve this fascism has to
  251. 11:33come out of the universities and go into
  252. 11:35the street he says we need Street
  253. 11:38fascism in which the ordinary citizen
  254. 11:41feels uncomfortable or intimidated into
  255. 11:46marching you may say in tune with the
  256. 11:48fascist ideology everyone is brought
  257. 11:51into
  258. 11:52line this is gentil so to read him today
  259. 11:56you almost feel like he is speaking
  260. 11:58directly to the antifa protesters on the
  261. 12:01street he's he's spouting an ideology
  262. 12:04that is familiar to us as
  263. 12:08progressivism except he calls it
  264. 12:11fascism so the remarkable feature of our
  265. 12:14time is that we seem to have an
  266. 12:15ideological
  267. 12:17fascism marching under the banner of
  268. 12:19anti-fascism
  269. 12:21and moreover the
  270. 12:24anti-fascists look like fascists
  271. 12:27costumed in black uniforms there
  272. 12:29resemble the brown shirts or the black
  273. 12:30shirts in melin's Italy they wear masks
  274. 12:33to hide their identity um they carry
  275. 12:36weapons uh and they use overt
  276. 12:40intimidation so the difference appears
  277. 12:43to be that the old fascists professed
  278. 12:45their label the new fascists purport to
  279. 12:49be fighting
  280. 12:51fascism
  281. 12:53now as I began to think about all this I
  282. 12:55started digging into the fascist ER and
  283. 13:00what turns out to be the very close
  284. 13:04kinship between the left and the
  285. 13:07Democrats in the United States and the
  286. 13:10Nazis and I just want to give a a
  287. 13:12glimpse of this I contend in the book
  288. 13:15that three of Hitler's most Central
  289. 13:19principles and and and um three of his
  290. 13:23most destructive and homicidal
  291. 13:26ideas he got Direct ly from the United
  292. 13:32States from the left and from the
  293. 13:34Democratic
  294. 13:37party now I'm going to talk about just
  295. 13:40one of those ideas here Hitler was
  296. 13:43sitting in lansburg
  297. 13:45prison and uh he was had not a whole lot
  298. 13:48to do so he'd read voraciously he
  299. 13:50developed an obsessive interest in
  300. 13:52America and he began to actually read
  301. 13:54about America in the 19th century he was
  302. 13:56especially interested in the American
  303. 13:58Indian
  304. 14:00and Hitler was at that time wrestling
  305. 14:02with a big problem and the problem was a
  306. 14:04German problem which is that Germany had
  307. 14:07this appetite for expansion laan's Ram
  308. 14:10living
  309. 14:11space and the normal outlet for that was
  310. 14:14colonialism because the British had gone
  311. 14:17abroad and conquered India large parts
  312. 14:19of Africa the French had established
  313. 14:21colonies in the Far East and the problem
  314. 14:23for Germany was there didn't seem to be
  315. 14:25a whole lot of other countries left to
  316. 14:28colonize
  317. 14:30and then Hitler got a big idea he goes
  318. 14:33we don't need to colonize in Asia or
  319. 14:36Africa or South America in fact who the
  320. 14:39heck wants to be ruling over a bunch of
  321. 14:40brown or black people he goes why don't
  322. 14:44we colonized right here in
  323. 14:46Europe he goes there's a model for this
  324. 14:49I've been reading
  325. 14:50about it's the Jackson Democrats and the
  326. 14:53way that they handled the American
  327. 14:55Indians what do they do they basically
  328. 14:58threw the Indians off their land and
  329. 15:00force them to relocate further west they
  330. 15:02displace them and dispossess them and if
  331. 15:06people remained they enslaved them he
  332. 15:10goes this is a fantastic model he goes
  333. 15:14here right around Germany we have Poland
  334. 15:18we have Western Russia we have the
  335. 15:21Slavic countries Eastern Europe he goes
  336. 15:24Germany's policy should be to throw
  337. 15:26those people off their land dispos them
  338. 15:29drive them further away resettle that
  339. 15:32land with by with German families and if
  340. 15:35any of them stay we'll make them
  341. 15:37slaves Hitler then lays this policy out
  342. 15:40in a formal document that I cite in the
  343. 15:43book now here's the point the point
  344. 15:44isn't that Hitler got his idea of
  345. 15:48Conquest from the Democratic party but
  346. 15:49he figured out how to do it how to do it
  347. 15:53just give you a glimp glimpse of a
  348. 15:54second
  349. 15:55example the Nazis
  350. 15:57meeting to discuss what would be then
  351. 16:00what would later be called the nurburg
  352. 16:03laws they aren't sure how to do it they
  353. 16:06aren't sure how to do it because first
  354. 16:07of all it's really difficult to identify
  355. 16:09who is a
  356. 16:10Jew intermarriage mixed marriages and so
  357. 16:14on and the second thing is they wanted
  358. 16:16to found the first racial state in the
  359. 16:18world a state formed in a sense on
  360. 16:20racial Supremacy but they couldn't find
  361. 16:23any example of a racial State anywhere
  362. 16:25else in the world so all the legal
  363. 16:27Scholars of the nurmberg
  364. 16:28uh laws couldn't figure out what model
  365. 16:32they could use what precedent they could
  366. 16:34use in order to establish this racist
  367. 16:37State and then one of the Nazis who had
  368. 16:40actually studied in the United States at
  369. 16:41the University of Arkansas submitted a
  370. 16:44report to Hitler basically saying I
  371. 16:46figured it out the Democrats in the
  372. 16:49American South actually have created a
  373. 16:52racial State they have not only
  374. 16:55segregation laws but State sponsor
  375. 16:57discrimination against blacks they've
  376. 16:59figured out how to decide who's black
  377. 17:02and moreover they have laws forbidding
  378. 17:04intermarriage between whites and blacks
  379. 17:07he goes we don't need to think this
  380. 17:08through it's already been thought
  381. 17:10through for us we just need to cross out
  382. 17:12the word black right in the word Jew and
  383. 17:15we're
  384. 17:16done now at this point one of the Nazis
  385. 17:20and by the way I'm I'm describing now
  386. 17:22the transcripts of an actual meeting of
  387. 17:24senior Nazi leaders who wrote the
  388. 17:27nurenberg legislation one of them says
  389. 17:30wait a
  390. 17:31minute uh in America H H how do the
  391. 17:34Americans how do the Democrats resolve
  392. 17:36the question of who is Black considering
  393. 17:39that there's been a lot of intermarriage
  394. 17:41even in
  395. 17:42America and the Nazi who studied in
  396. 17:45America goes it's very simple they have
  397. 17:47the one drop rule in the Democratic
  398. 17:49South if you have one drop of black
  399. 17:51blood you're black and all the Nazis
  400. 17:55without exception go that's too much
  401. 17:58that's that's that's excessive we can't
  402. 18:00go that far uh and ironically the
  403. 18:03nurenberg laws which were then adopted
  404. 18:05shortly
  405. 18:06thereafter essentially take a much more
  406. 18:09moderate position on on on who is a Jew
  407. 18:11you have to have three Jewish
  408. 18:13grandparents in order to qualify as a
  409. 18:15Jew so we have a little kind of irony
  410. 18:18which is that in examining the American
  411. 18:20race laws the most radical of the Nazis
  412. 18:23found them to be too much the Democrats
  413. 18:27have gone too far we can't really go all
  414. 18:29that
  415. 18:30way
  416. 18:32now I want to fast forward from all from
  417. 18:35this history and I mention it only
  418. 18:37because you would think that a history
  419. 18:41that is so rich with information uh FDR
  420. 18:45is dispatching members of his brain
  421. 18:46trust to melini's Italy for example to
  422. 18:49study the Italian model and bring it to
  423. 18:51the United States because he felt that
  424. 18:53fascism was more Progressive than the
  425. 18:55New Deal all of this stuff has vanished
  426. 18:58from our history books it hasn't
  427. 19:00vanished from history if it did I
  428. 19:02wouldn't know I wouldn't be able to find
  429. 19:03it it's there it's indisputable but it's
  430. 19:06been sort of you may say wided
  431. 19:08out and this shows us really the core of
  432. 19:12our big lie hit Hitler used the term the
  433. 19:14big lie but our big lie is the massive
  434. 19:18Pro Progressive project that's been
  435. 19:20going on for 75 years remember that
  436. 19:24early Fascism and Nazism had nothing to
  437. 19:27do with the Holocaust
  438. 19:29um today when we think of Nazism we see
  439. 19:31it through the lens of awit daa and so
  440. 19:35on so today it's very difficult to take
  441. 19:37Nazism and fascism even seriously as a
  442. 19:40system of thought but to try to
  443. 19:42understand those things really you have
  444. 19:44to recover the original fascism the
  445. 19:48original Nazism to understand why would
  446. 19:50anybody even go for this why would they
  447. 19:53be attracted to it but the point I'm
  448. 19:55making is that after World War II the
  449. 19:57progressives
  450. 19:59looked at the record and they said this
  451. 20:02is terrible if people knew about this
  452. 20:06nobody would ever vote for the
  453. 20:07Democratic party if people ever found
  454. 20:09out about this progressivism would be so
  455. 20:12irremediably stained that it would never
  456. 20:15recover and so a massive intellectual
  457. 20:18project then begins not a conspiracy but
  458. 20:20a kind of Harmony of Minds to retell the
  459. 20:24story and this is the key to cunningly
  460. 20:28move fascism from the left whereas it
  461. 20:31where it had always belonged where it
  462. 20:32was recognized to be by the fascists and
  463. 20:35the anti-fascists alike to move it
  464. 20:38cleverly into the right-wing column
  465. 20:41where here to for fascism could now be
  466. 20:44used against
  467. 20:47anti-fascists in other words the very
  468. 20:49party of limited government small
  469. 20:51government individual rights all the
  470. 20:53things the fascists hated those are the
  471. 20:56very people who could be called fascists
  472. 20:59it's an absolutely I think diabolical
  473. 21:03scheme imported to America largely by
  474. 21:08one man or I should say two men this is
  475. 21:11the Frankfurt School adorno a guy named
  476. 21:14Herbert maruza these are refugees from
  477. 21:17fascism but they were also
  478. 21:19marxists they knew the kinship between
  479. 21:22Marxism and fascism by the way if you
  480. 21:25want to know the origins of fascism
  481. 21:26fascism came out of Marxism molini was
  482. 21:29the Marxist the most famous Marxist in
  483. 21:31Italy and in fact musolini was a kind of
  484. 21:34you may say pen pal of Lenin when
  485. 21:36musolini came to power Lenin sent him a
  486. 21:38congratulatory telegram because Lenin
  487. 21:41recognized musolini as a fellow
  488. 21:44socialist revolutionary on the left on
  489. 21:47the left but when maruza came to America
  490. 21:50he had the mantle of being
  491. 21:54anti-fascist Jewish background German
  492. 21:57fleeing from fascism and so what maruza
  493. 22:01did was he helped reinvent fascism to
  494. 22:04equal
  495. 22:05capitalism fascism means capitalism and
  496. 22:08he also invented a slogan that could
  497. 22:10actually be the operating slogan of the
  498. 22:12left on the street
  499. 22:13today no free speech for
  500. 22:17fascists in any event all of this is
  501. 22:19discussed in the book it's a very rich
  502. 22:21book it actually took me places I had
  503. 22:23never been before I felt like this was
  504. 22:25territory I I I I knew from hyek and
  505. 22:28others
  506. 22:29but the book for me was a revelation all
  507. 22:31kinds of new stuff very damning very
  508. 22:34Timely
